The Sweet Taste of Summer
Now that the holiday excitement is over, retail ads this week are back to featuring all the typical summer specials, with watermelon, corn, salad, and
berries heavily showcased. Radishes, green onions, tomatoes, lettuces, celery, peppers, carrots, and sweet onions were also very popular this week.
Cantaloupes, cherries, peaches, nectarines, and plums were featured as well. Even though we're in the middle of summer vacation some chains have
already started featuring early back-to-school sales and supplies for dorm rooms, with low prices to draw shoppers in.
Total ad numbers this week are 416,235, a 4 percent increase from the last weeks 399,210 ads. The total number of ads broken out by commodity
groups: fruit 235,186 (which is 57% of all ads), onions and potatoes 21,978 (5%), vegetables 154,236 (37%), herbs 790, and ornamentals 4,045. The
number of ads for organic produce are 53,240, 13% of total ads.
The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus stores) this week compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in
price for fruit items include mangos at 10%. Fruit that decreased in price include cantaloupes at 14%, plums at 13%, and yellow flesh nectarines at
12%. Significant price changes in potatoes include a 16% increase in russet potatoes in a 10 lb bag and a 12% decrease in russet potatoes in a 5 lb
bag. Significant increases in vegetable prices this week include bagged salads 10-12 oz at 29% and 5-9 oz at 18%, asparagus at 24%, and tomatoes at
12%. Significant decreases in vegetable prices this week include red peppers (ea) at 30%, beans at 26%, and corn at 23%.
