NIGHT VISION BASICS

Night Vision Types
ATN makes two different types of night vision devices based
on two different kinds of technologies. The most common of
the two is image intensification technology, which is what most
people think of when they talk about night vision. This kind of
device uses whatever ambient light is available and amplifies it
into a visible image.
ATN also makes night vision devices based on thermal imaging
technology. This type of device can detect heat, or thermal energy.
Sometimes referred to as infrared viewing, thermal imaging devices
can be used in total darkness, and are effective in environments
where smoke, fog, and solid obstacles might obscure ones view.

Thermal Imaging
All objects, both natural and manmade, emit infrared energy
as heat. By detecting very subtle temperature differences of
everything in view, infrared (or thermal imaging) technology
reveals what otherwise would be invisible to the naked eye.
A thermal imaging device uses a special lens that focuses
infrared light into an array of infrared detector elements. The
detector elements create a detailed temperature pattern called
a thermogram, which is translated into electric impulses. The
impulses are sent to a signal-processing unit, a circuit board with
a dedicated chip that sends the information through an electronic
display component. The resulting image will appear in various
colors depending on the intensity of the infrared emission.

Image Intensification Night Vision

At the heart of this type of night vision device is the image
intensifier tube (IIT). The tube gathers existing ambient light
(including starlight, moonlight or infra-red light) through the
front lens. This light, which is made up of photons goes into a
photocathode tube that changes the photons to electrons.
The electrons are then amplified to a much greater number
through an electrical and chemical process. The electrons are then
hurled against a phosphorus screen that changes the amplified
electrons back into visible light that you see through the eyepiece.
The image will now be a clear green-hued amplified re-creation of
the scene you were observing.

How Far You Can See

There are a few variables that can affect the distance you can
see with a night vision device. The larger the object the easier it
is to see is one obvious factor. The degree of detail you can see
from a given distance will depend in part on the type of device you
are using.
Lighting conditions play a large part in determining distance
range. The more ambient light you have (starlight, moonlight, and
infrared light) the better and further you will be able to see. You
can always see further on a night when the moon and stars are
out, than when its cloudy or overcast. We typically state that you
can tell the difference between a male and a female or a dog and
a deer at about 75 to 100 yards. However, if you were looking
across an open field and there was a half moon out you could see
a barn or a house 500 yards away.

ATN TECHNOLOGY
Smart Technology
ATNs Smart Technology is designed to increase ease of use
and extend battery life. It consists of a proximity sensor that
automatically turns the unit on when put into viewing position,
and shuts off when no longer in that position. The user never has
to worry about turning the scope on or off. Our Smart Technology
system automatically senses when the unit is no longer in use
and shuts down into sleep mode, reducing the need to constantly
replace batteries.

Red on Green Reticle System

Youll never lose sight of your crosshairs due to darkness with
ATNs Red on Green Reticle System. Our illuminated reticle has a
10-position rheostat that adjusts brightness from a well-defined
black reticle for favorable light conditions, to a glowing red reticle
for low light conditions.

Total Darkness Technology

Our Total Darkness Technology gives your ATN device greater
night vision range and better viewing capability. Models with this
technology have an infrared illuminator that throws out a beam
of infra-red light thats near invisible to the naked eye, but can be
seen through a night vision device. This gives your ATN precision
optics device the capability to see in total darkness.

ATN has developed a proprietary lens coating thats designed

to allow for maximum light transmission and durability. The
Proshield coating is a compound mixture that makes our lenses
resistant to scratches, condensation, static, and glare.

ATN Image Intensifier Tubes

Weve developed a range of Custom Grade Tubes (CGT)
designed to meet the demands and expectations of our international
customers. Engineered for significantly enhanced performance
over current 2nd generation IITs, our CGT tubes deliver the best
performance-to-cost ratio in the marketplace. (State Department
export license may be required.)
Our High Performance Tubes (HPT) are engineered for
significantly enhanced performance over current 2nd generation
IITs. Our HPT (FOM 1400) tubes deliver 3rd Gen performance at a
2nd generation cost. (State Department export license required.)

Built-in Adjustable Beam Long Range Infrared Illuminator

Our FOM 1400 (3I) and FOM 1600 (3N) Tubes are designed to
support international sales of 3rd generation equipment to friendly
countries. These tubes are designed to give optimal performance
while being in compliance with the FOM requirement. (State

ATNs Tubes are fully compatible and interchangeable with ANVIS
and PVS7 models available from competing manufacturers.

Detachable Long Range Infrared Illuminator

Night Vision products are subject to one or more of the export control laws and regulations of the U.S. Government. Pending
the model these products are under the control jurisdiction of either the US Department of State or the US Bureau of Industry
and Security US Department of Commerce. Export without proper licensing or consent is strictly prohibited.

DEVICE CLASSIFICATIONS
Night Vision Device Generations
Night vision devices are categorized according to the technical
specifications of the image intensifier tube. The term generation
or Gen is the accepted standard for both military and commercial
grade night vision devices. They can be designated as either a 1st,
2nd or 3rd generation unit.

GENERATION 1

1st generation is currently the most popular type of night vision

in the world. Utilizing the basic principles described earlier, a 1st
generation unit will amplify the existing light several thousand
times letting you clearly see in the dark. These units provide a
bright visible image at a low cost, which makes them a popular
choice for boating, observing wildlife, or providing security for the
home.
2nd generation is primarily used by law enforcement, and has
a variety of other professional applications. Consequently, 2nd
Gen. units are more expensive than the comparable 1st Gen. units.
2nd generation devices have an additional micro-channel plate,
commonly referred to as an MCP. This added component allows
2nd generation devices to amplify the light many more times than
1st generation, producing a brighter and sharper image.

GENERATION 2

CGT/HPT: The CGT/HPT types of Image Intensifier tubes are

engineered for significantly enhanced performance over current
2nd generation IITs. They are Multi-Alkali compact 18mm format
MCP Image Intensifiers. They have increased sensitivity, resolution,
Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), and the Modulation Transfer Function
(MTF). These improvements produce an exceptional image clarity
and brightness.

GENERATION 3

3rd generation units contain a sensitive chemical, gallium

arsenide, within the photocathode. The result is an image thats
brighter and sharper than 2nd generation units. An ion barrier film
is also added to increase tube life. 3rd Gen. provides the user with
excellent low light performance.

Thermal Imaging and FRAME RATE

One of the most important specifications of any thermal imaging device is frame rate. This refers to the number of frames per
second that can be viewed by the device. The lower the frame rate, the choppier the motion. Conversely, the higher the frame rate,
the more precise the motion. This is especially critical in weapon scope applications that require precise and quick acquisition.
Standard professional thermal systems come in 30hz (Fast Imaging or FI) while many commercial viewers run at 9hz (Standard
Imaging or SI). In 2012, ATN is proud to offer 60hz (Enhanced Imaging or EI) options for most of its thermal systems. With
Enhanced Imaging you will never have to worry about hitting behind the moving target because your skill outpaces the technology
in your scope.

The entire system is built in the USA, utilizing Mil-Spec Lenses that make the ThOR battleworthy for most any mission, operation, or outdoor activity. Each system features a digital

The ATN NVM14 Multi-Purpose Night Vision Monocular is a high performance modular
night vision device. The NVM14s great flexibility makes it an ideal choice for use by elite
units, military personnel conducting Close Quarter Combat and Urban operations, tactical law
enforcement teams and security-conscious civilians.
The ATN NVM14 can be handheld, head-mounted, and can be attached to a helmet or
weapon. Compatible with most IR laser aiming/illuminating devices, this model defines multimission versatility. This high performance unit enables walking, driving, weapon firing, shortrange surveillance, map reading, vehicle maintenance, and administering first aid during
nighttime operations.
The ATN NVM14 is also equipped with ATNs Total Darkness Technology featuring a built-in
infrared light-emitting source that increases visual range when ambient light is minimal. The
NVM14 format can easily incorporate Gen 2+, CGT, HPT and 3 gen. image intensifier tubes,
allowing this unit to easily meet the budget requirements of police, military, search/rescue
teams, private security agencies and security conscious civilians. The ATN NVM14 ensures a
tactical advantage for any military, LE or civilian user operating at night.

NIGHT VISION WEAPON SIGHT

ATN MARS Series NV riflescopes represent the absolute latest in the world of night vision
equipment. Similar to all ATN scopes, the ATN MARS features only the purest grades of heavy
glass and precise optical design to create multi-element, multi-coated lenses that ensure
premium quality. All optical lenses on the MARS scopes are individually fitted and calibrated
to achieve optimum performance.
The ATN MARS uses the highest quality MX10160 type hand-selected image intensifier
tubes (IIT) based on the latest night vision technologies. A wide array of IIT configurations are
available to choose from to satisfy various requirements and specifications.
Compact, lightweight and rugged one-piece construction is CNC milled from solid
aerospace-quality aluminium billet and fitted with titanium inserts. The ATN MARS gives the
weapon operator 50% more (45mm!) of eye relief than Raptor (4X and 6X) and ITT F7001
(A) and offers superior performance over other manufacturers models in regard to step of
windage and elevation precision as well as in other characteristics and features.
The ATN MARS is the only night vision scope with the new ATN proprietary feature
Two-Color Manual Brightness control of the aiming reticle. This feature allows for a choice of
color (red or amber) of the projected reticle depending on operators preference and tactical
situation.
