LEROY -Each December, LeRoy celebrates the coming Christmas season with Santas House, cookie decorating, sleigh rides
and good food. After an afternoon of activities, evening brings
the light parade through town, singing of carols and the lighting of the town Christmas tree in the Village Park. Of course,
what Christmas event would be complete without Santa visiting and bringing cheer and good wishes to everyone. This is a

Circle the Lakes,

Cadillac and Mitchell - 20 miles
Take Business Route U.S. 131 to Granite Street
which curves into Sunnyside Drive. Take Sunnyside west to M-55. Take M-55 to South 31 Road/
which becomes, West, North and then East Lake
Mitchell Drives as you circle Lake Mitchell, and
then runs into M-115. Turn right on M-115 and go
a short distance to North Boulevard. Turn left at
the Canal and follow the shoreline of Lake Cadillac as it becomes Chestnut Street. Take Chestnut
Street to Lake Street to continue along the shoreline and into downtown Cadillac.

Mesick Loop - 63 miles

Head west from Cadillac on M-55 to 25 Road.
Take 25 Road north to Boon Road. Turn west on
Boon, drive through Boon and Harrietta to M-37.

Options to take before continuing the tour: Cross M-37,

heading west on North Coates Highway to view the colors
that blaze along the Manistee River. Or take 26 Road to
ORourke Drive and stroll to a waterfall.
On the designated tour, go north on M-37 to M-115 in
Mesick. Drive northwest on M-115 to 9 Road into Glengary and back onto M-42 to 15 Road through Meauwataka
and back to Cadillac.

Cadillac/Tustin/Bristol/Harrietta 64 miles
Drive south on U.S. 131 to Mackinaw Trail. Continue
until M-115 and then turn east on M-115 and then south
on Dighton Road. Either turn west on 20 Mile Road or
continue on Dighton Road to 18 Mile Road. Turn west on
18 Mile then north onto 140th Avenue. Take 140th Avenue
north to 20 Mile Road. Follow 20 Mile Road into Tustin
and then into the Bristol area.
Next, go north on State Road, across the Pine River to
48 Road, then to 7 Mile Road, heading north to M-55. Turn
right on M-55 to Caberfae Road, then left and drive north
to Boon Road at Harrietta. Turn right on Boon Road and
head back to Cadillac.

Manton and Lake City Loop - 37 miles

From downtown Cadillac, take Business Route U.S. 131
north to Boon Road. Head east on Boon Road, which turns
into Seeley Road. Follow Seeley north to Rosted east. Turn
north on LaChance Road, travel through Jennings and
then head west on Burns Road. Turn north on Seeley Road
and cross M-42/Mike & Tony Road. Seeley then turns into
47 Road. Take 47 Road north to Rhoby Road. Turn right on
Rhoby and then another right on Brown Road. Head south
on Brown to M-42/Walker Road. Head east on M-42 to M-66.
Head south on M-66 through lake City to M-55. Head west
on M-55 toward downtown Cadillac.

The change of the season invites a beautiful change in

leaves as vibrant displays of fall colors come to Northern
Michigan.
Fall is upon us and color tour hikes are a great way to
experience the sights, sounds and feelings of autumn.
I think overall that trees are going into the autumn in
good physiological condition, Dr. Marc Abrams, professor of ecosystem science and management at Penn State
University, said.
Through early October is the early color to peak color
time for most of the Upper Peninsula and Northern
Lower Michigan.
Joy VanDrie, Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau, executive
director, said the bureau hands out nearly 10,000 brochures to residents and tourists hoping to experience the
orange, crimson and gold of a fall color tour.
The National Forest is one of the few places where you
get vast hardwoods and Northern Michigan usually displays very bright natural colors, VanDrie said.
VanDrie said the Manistee River Trail is one of her favorite places to experience the scenic outdoors in the fall.
But there are several outdoor trails to view the explosion of colors. The 2.5 mile Heritage Nature Trail leading through the woodland and Heritage marsh and the

Mackenzie Cross-Country and Mountain Bike Trail are

two trails for hikers and bikers to experience fall. The
Mackenzie trail system is located just northwest of the
Caberfae ski area. The White Pine Trail is also a popular
trail to get out and see fall colors.
Kate Salm, public affairs specialist for the HuronManistee National Forests, said mid-October is the peak
time to see fall colors in the area. Salm said fall color tour
hikes are a statewide tradition that are fun and inexpensive for families.
Tourists will travel from the northwest portion of the
country to follow the changes in the fall colors from state
to state, Salm said.
As the leaves begin to change, Salm said weekly updates and a fall color photo gallery will be available on
the Huron-Manistee National Forests website.
VanDrie said autumn is a cozy season that gives tourists a plethora of outdoor leisure activities.
A lot of times, people view the fall color tour as an
activity they have to drive around to see, VanDrie said.
But they should ride a bike, hike or canoe and experience the fall foliage from a different perspective.

Geers Farm Pumpkin Patch

Once again, Missaukee County residents and visitors
will be able to enjoy picking out the perfect pumpkin at
Geers Farm near McBain.
Every weekend in October from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the
pumpkin patch at the farm will be open. People can pick
a pumpkin, get some cider and homemade doughnuts
and purchase straw bales and corn stalks for decorations. There are farm animals for children to pet, a hay
stack for kids to climb and a corn maze to explore.

Pahls Pumpkin Patch
Pahls Pumpkin Patch in Buckley also will again be
open for business offering all of your fall favorites. The
patch, located across from the Buckley Old Engine Show
grounds, has been open for more than 10 years and will
be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 1. The patch will be open through Halloween.
There are farm animals for children to see, corn mazes
to explore, a straw maze for children, pony rides, a goat
walk, and pumpkins, squash, straw, gourds, Indian corn
and corn stalk bundles for sale and more. On the weekends, there are hay rides and a concession stand. Entrance fee is $2 but children 4 and under are free.

In early September Norman Farms in Tustin was finishing up the summer growing season with sweet corn
and tomatoes, but now pumpkins are the biggest produce
harvested.
In addition to the pumpkins, Norman Farms also has
Indian Corn, gourds and dried corn stalks. The farm is
open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week. The farm is
located four miles west of U.S. 131 exit 168 at 22735 20 Mile

HOW DO YOU PICK A GOOD PUMPKIN?

You know where the pumpkin patches are but how do

you know which pumpkin will make the best jack-olantern?
Dont worry, there are things you can look for that will
help you pick the perfect pumpkin depending on what
type of carving you want to do. From simple faces, stencil
patterns to elaborate design there is a pumpkin that is
perfect for you and your family, according to tips from the
Farmers Almanac.
The first step to finding the right pumpkin is deciding
on the design you want to carve. Depending on the
size and shape of your design, you may need a tall narrow pumpkin or a short round one.
Smaller pumpkins are suitable for carving simple traditional jack-o-lantern faces.
Medium sized pumpkins are good selections for most
stencil patterns.
For more intricate and elaborate designs, you may
want to choose a larger pumpkin so it will be easier to
carve.
A pumpkin with a smooth surface will give you the
best working canvas.
The pumpkin should be flat on the bottom so it will
not roll.
Avoid pumpkins with scratches, nicks, cuts and dents
unless they will enhance your design.
Pass up pumpkins with bruises since these will decay
faster.
Lighter colored pumpkins are normally softer, making carving easier.
Look for a ripe pumpkin with a sturdy stem. Do not
carry the pumpkin by its stem to avoid breaking it. If
the stem does break off, it can be patched back using
toothpicks. If your perfect pumpkin is missing its
stem, instead of carving out a lid on top, simply carve
out the bottom. Place a candle on the carved out section, and then set the pumpkin over it.

A youthful movement
Sounds of laughing, rambunctious youth often
accompany the music played during Gopherwood
concerts. This is no accident.
Introducing youth to quality local music is one of
the goals of Gopherwood Concert Series organizer
Paul Brown, along with others involved in the series.
At some point, they may have to take over my
job, joked Brown.
Brown said its important to him that youth are
exposed to music other than what they hear on Top
40 radio.
That music isnt necessarily bad but we want to
get young people involved in the music we provide,
Brown said.
What makes Gopherwood special, Brown said, is
that unlike many bands you might hear around this
area, the musicians they book all play their own
original music.
Theres a lot of original music in Michigan,
Brown said. There is so much good music out
there.
For the 32nd year, local and nationally-renowned
musicians from a variety of genres will take center
stage at the Elks Lodge all winter long.
The first Gopherwood show will take place Oct. 3,
when the Muteflutes will be welcomed to the stage
for the first time.
As for the rest of the season, Brown said there are
a lot of the same faces in familiar acts, as well as in
different acts.

On March 21, there will be a Made in Michigan
Fundraiser with artists yet to be announced. In
April, a show is planned but the artist for this date
also has not yet been announced.
Most of the shows will be hosted at the Cadillac
Elks Lodge but the Blake Elliot concert will be a
house venue.

highlight Festival of Dreams
CADILLAC The American Dream is home
ownership. And the Festival of Dreams helps make
the dream of home ownership possible for Habitat
for Humanity families in Wexford County.
The dinner-dance is a joint project of Wexford
Habitat and the Cadillac Rotary. The evening includes live music, appetizers, food stations, and live

CADILLAC Just because improvements are happening to the Cadillac Rotary Performing Art Pavilion it
doesnt mean the annual Cadillac kickoff to the holiday
season will be canceled.
First Baptist Church of Cadillac Rev. Dave McMahon
said things will go on as planned with a few tweaks.
This years festivities are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
Nov. 27. As in past years, carols will be sung, vendors will
be selling hot chocolate and, of course, Santa Claus will

make an appearance. The event also will feature the lighting of the community Christmas tree. The City Park and
the Keith McKellop Walkway will also be illuminated.
With the ongoing construction to the pavilion, McMahon said the event will not be held there, but will be in the
area of the City Park.
We have applied to shut down Lake Street so we can
use the City Park. Right now we are trying to figure out
where to put Santas chair, he said.

Where Santa will be sitting hasnt been determined yet, but rest
assured, he will be in the Cadillac City Park ready to listen.
The event is free of charge and will take place rain,
shine or snow. This year, kids who visit with Santa will
receive a video entitled The Very First Noel and a
goody bag. The animated video is narrated by Andy
Griffiths and was released in 2006. The video will be available to the first 150 children who attend the event. McMahon said nearly 130 children came to the event last year.
In addition to Christmas in the Park, Cadillac will be a
great place for shopping and other events on Thanksgiving weekend.
The first event Saturday is the third annual Toy Town
Toy Trot. The last three years the event raised more than
$20,000 for Toys for Tots. The 5K run/walk will start on
Lake Street between the Rotary Pavilion and the City
Park and will head north around Lake Cadillac. Cost to
participate is $25.
Downtown merchants also will be open and participating in Small Business Saturday. Cadillac Area Visitors
Bureau Executive Director Joy VanDrie said many downtown Cadillac businesses will be offering an open house
type atmosphere that could include musicians playing in
some of the stores.

Carriage rides & cookie decorating

MARION Christmas traditions in Marion

have started early the last few years.
On Saturday, Nov. 28, two days after Thanksgiving, the sleepy village comes alive with
holiday festivities ranging from a visit from
Santa to horse-drawn carriage rides.
Event organizer Anndrea McCrimmon
said the kick-off will start at 5:30 p.m., with
childrens activities such as cookie decorating
and letters to Santa.
Horse-drawn sleigh rides also will begin at
5:30 p.m.
At 6:30 p.m., hot dogs, cookies and hot cocoa
will be served and carols will be sung.
At 7 p.m., trees will be lit and kids will be
able to visit with Santa, who will pass out
treats.
The event is free for anyone to attend.
McCrimmon said businesses decorate trees
along downtown for the event, making the
experience even more special for the kids and
their parents.
Anyone who attends the kickoff who would
like to donate cash toward next years event
will be able to do so at a drop-off box.

Plans are coming together for Reed Citys annual Evergreen Festival, the communitys kickoff to the holiday
season.
The city always holds the event the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving.
On Friday, this year, the community will focus on shopping. The emphasis is a nice way to highlight businesses, Chastity Eads, the director of the Reed City Chamber
of Commerce, said.
On Saturday, the city will celebrate with a parade and
other activities. Santa and Mrs. Claus will make an appearance in town. They will even pose for pictures with
community children. Reindeer will be around. Elves will
be there, too.
The depot will be transformed into a gingerbread
house. Inside, celebrants will be able to grab some hot
chocolate. Children will be able to decorate sugar and

gingerbread cookies.
In conjunction with the Evergreen Festival, the twoday Evergreen Festival Arts and Crafts Spectacular will
bring more than 130 vendors to town. The show will be
held at Reed City High School Friday and Saturday.
Festival organizers are making plans for bed races, too.
Those who plan to attend the parade might want to
consider being in the parade. Cash prizes are awarded to
winning entrants. There is a grand prize, too. Categories
include vehicles, walkers and marchers, a childrens animal category, an animal category for adults, a business
category, an organization category, and a category for
bands.

A carnival-themed Christmas

Plans are underway in Evart to celebrate the Christmas

season the way a small town should with a wide assortment of activities that will appeal to the kid in everyone.
Christmas in a Small Town is a name the community
embraces for the entire Yuletide season, the director of
Evarts Downtown Development Authority Al Weinberg
said. The celebration officially kicks off Dec. 5 with a
large carnival held at Evarts Depot and at the Crossroads Community Church across the street.
At the carnival, children will be able to work on a craft
activity. There will be face painting and, of course, Santa
will make an appearance.
The event also will feature some outdoor activities and
a Christmas show. Foodhotdogs and popcorn, most
years will be served as well.
Throughout the season, the Osceola League for Arts
and Humanities shop on Main Street will have for sale

handmade Christmas items and art of all kinds.

Other events will include a concert produced by Evart
Public Schools bands and a holiday bazaar that will attract vendors from across the state. Evart Elementary

Christmas Eve Mass.
What would Christmas be without giving? Once again,
the Evart Public Library will accept gifts for its Giving
Tree. Townsfolk may bring unwrapped gifts for families
in need to the library, and personnel from Love INC. will
distribute them.
Activities are still being planned and organized. The
towns website, www.evart.org, will list events and times
as the Christmas season approaches.

The annual event returns
to the Kettunen Center from 8
a.m. until noon Saturday, Dec.
5 for its 34th year of celebrating the holiday spirit.

Breakfast with Santa has become a seasonal tradition for
many families celebrating the
holidays. She said the event is
a great time for volunteers to
decorate the center and welcome hundreds of community members and volunteers.
A lot of our guests enjoyed Breakfast with Santa as
children and now are attending the event with their children, Jacobson said. The beautiful location and decorations make it feel like Christmas.
Jacobson said nearly 900 community members walk
through the doors of the center for the holiday event each
year. Cost for the holiday event is $1 per child and $3 per
adult.
Live music, face painting, a craft room with more than
a half-dozen different activities, a visit from Mr. and Mrs.
Claus and of course a pancake breakfast are a few of the
events activities.
Jacobson said guests can expect even more activities at
this years breakfast, including a game of I spy, a photo
booth, igloo golf and additional craft-making activities.
The photo booth will allow guests to pose for photos
dressed as their favorite Christmas characters, while
igloo golf is a form of mini golf where guests test their
skills on igloo-shaped holes.
She said volunteer elves also will knit mittens for chil-

dren attending this years event.

Breakfast with Santa began more than 30 years ago
with a small breakfast with Kris Kringle, Jacobson said.
Now, Jacobson said nearly 200 volunteers work to bring
additional attractions to the event each year.
My favorite memories are watching families return
year after year, Jacobson said. It is more than just
breakfast with Santa, its an experience you will talk
about for years to come. Families that come one year
make sure they come the next.
The Kettunen Center is a Michigan 4-H Foundationowned full-service conference and event facility. The
event is made possible through the donations of many
local businesses. The facility is located 5 miles east of Tustin on 20 Mile Road.
Reservations for the 34th annual Breakfast with Santa
begin Nov. 30.

new exterior boasts a new color scheme, cedar trim

snowmobile trails
CADILLAC More than 6,500 groomed snowmobile
trails are offered in Michigan for snowmobilers and
many are right here in Northern Michigan.

WEXFORD COUNTY
Caberfae Snowmobile trail head

The Caberfae Snowmobile Trail is located in Wexford,

Lake and Mason counties. Traveling west from Cadillac,
travel approximately 12 miles to Caberfae Road. Turn
right (north). The trail head is on the right-hand side of
the road. Trail from parking lot offers access to Trail 6
and connections to Trail 37,637 and 379.

South 23 Road trail head

Heading west on M-55 from Cadillac, turn north on 25

Mile Road, approximately 6 miles west of Cadillac West.
Travel two miles then turn west on No. 38 Road, after one
mile turn north on 23 Road and travel north about 2 1/2
miles to trail head on the left. The trail head connects to
Trail 37. From Trail 37 going south snowmobiler can access trail 6, 637 and 35. Heading north gives access to trail
379 to Mesick.

South 33 Road trail head

From the intersection of M-115 and M-55 in Cadillac

West, travel west approximately two miles to South 33
Road, travel south to the parking lot near the intersection
of South 33 Road and 48 1/2 Road.

MISSAUKEE COUNTY
Miss-Kal Trail

The Miss-Kal Trail is a 50-mile trail that runs through

Missaukee County and is maintained by the Missaukee
Trail Blazers. The main trunk is the 6 trail and runs
east and west. There are two trail heads located north
of Manton before U.S. 131 and in Lake City at the county
boat launch. The trail connects snowmobilers to Roscommon, Grand Traverse and Wexford County trails. The
Michigan Snowmobile Association has listings for area
trails in Wexford, Osceola Lake and Missaukee counties.
Trails are also listed for various locations in the Upper
and Lower Pennisula.Trail reports can be found at msasnow.org or www.michigansnowmobile.com .

OSCEOLA COUNTY
The Fred Meijer White Pine Trail

The Fred Meijer While Pine Trail is a 92-mile trail that

has an 88 mile section open from Cadillac to Grand Rapids. Riders can get onto the White Pine Trail and Pere
Marquette Trail near the Reed City Depot, located at the
crossroads of U.S. 131 and U.S. 10. The White Pine Trail is
the longest trail system in the state.

Its snow-much fun

The North American Snow Fest is again going to hit
Cadillac this winter and people should expect everything that was at last years event and more.
With momentum building over the past couple years,
NASF Committee Co-Chair Sharon Flewelling said it
will continue at this years event. The event is always
the first weekend of February.
This year the NASF will be from Feb. 4 through Feb.
7. Flewelling did not have all the details at press time,
but she did say there are tons of events happening that
people have come to expect, like the Miss NASF Pageant
and the chili cook-off. She added the snowmobile races
on Lake Cadillac also should be part of the event in 2016.
We expect to hold it at the Cherry Grove Events Center. We felt it was an excellent place to do what we want
to do and our numbers were up, she said. We are
currently in the process of bringing in a couple other
groups to partner with us or to sponsor other events.
With meteorologists anticipating El Nio to make the
winter a little more mild, Flewelling said the organizers of the event cant do anything to change that. Whatever Mother Nature throws their way, the NASF will
deal with and be a success.
We are planning as we normally do. We have had

instances where we had bad ice, but we are not totally

dependent on getting on the ice, she said.
Although things are still in the planning stages,
Flewelling said in addition to the events such as the
Miss NASF and chili cook-off, the NASF will also have
the fun run, as well as, the ice fishing tournament.
Hopefully it will be bigger and better than in the
past, she said.
Flewelling said as the event gets closer she should
be able to talk about various new events that are not
nailed down just yet. As the event nears check out

far to find classy ski trails
Northern Michigan is known for its cross country ski trails
and the Cadillac area does not disappoint in this regard.
A number of trails in the area are free to the public because they are maintained by groups of volunteers who
pack the snow and make sure the trails are clear of debris.
Others require payment of a small fee but both provide
a unique and top-notch cross country ski experience.
The following is a list of some well-known trails
throughout the area.

Cadillac Pathway
Over the years, an 11-mile stretch of trails and loops
groomed for cross country skiing has become a stopping
ground for thousands of travelers and locals.
Outdoors enthusiast Dave Foley said the Cadillac Pathway is perhaps the most popular cross country ski trail
in the area.
The trail features a wide range of skill-level variety,
from easy to advanced.
The Cadillac Pathway is located in the Pere Marquette
State Forest, three miles east of Cadillac with two access
points, one on 13th Street and the second on Seeley Road
just north of Boon Road.
It does not cost anything to use the trail.

Mackenzie Trail,
Caberfae Peaks

From the Caberfae Peaks downhill ski area, those looking to cut a cross country path can head out on this trail
system, which offers 10 miles of levels and loops.
Outdoors enthusiast Dave Foley said he has fond memories of skiing this trail while his son hit the downhill
trail at Caberfae.
Foley said this trail has something for everyone, from
advanced loops to those for beginners.

Mitchell State Park, Cadillac

Near that canal between lakes Cadillac and Mitchell,

the Heritage Nature Trail begins behind the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center on M-115.

The three-mile trail is groomed and skiers are asked to

stay on designated trails in order to preserve the wilderness near the trail.

Evergreen Resort, Cadillac

This popular resort has a strong reputation as a place
to begin a cross country ski adventure.
With five kilometers of groomed trails easily accessed
from the resort property, there is no cost for registered
guests and a small entrance fee for visitors by signing in
at the front desk.

Missaukee Mountain, Lake City

A few miles north of Lake City lies Missaukee Mountain, which is known for downhill skiing, but also is
home to Terrain Park and trails for snowboarding and
cross-country skiing.
Those interested in sledding and snowshoeing also
should check out Missaukee Mountain, which is open on
weekends and school holidays.

You try ice fishing for free

February 13 & 14

CADILLAC Looking for a free family outdoor activity this winter?

Get out on the ice and enjoy a weekend of free fishing.
Free fishing weekend is set to kick off Feb. 13 and 14.
During free fishing weekend, all fishing licenses are
waived for two days. Residents and out-of-state visitors
can enjoy fishing on both inland and Great Lakes waters
for all species of fish. All fishing regulations still apply.
Steve Knaisel, owner of Pilgrim Village Fishing Shop,
said experienced anglers will see many new faces on the
ice during free fishing weekend.
We see a lot of new and out-of-state fishermen during
free fishing weekend. There are also those past fishermen
who are picking up the sport again, Knaisel said.
Knaisel advises inexperience anglers heading out on
the ice to travel with an experienced fishermen, dress
warm, visit their local bait and tackle shop for tips and
have fun.
If weather conditions are good, you can expect a dynamite weekend, Knaisel said.
During free fishing weekend, a number of counties will
be hosting fishing events.

host an ice fishing seminar and youth contest Saturday

from noon to 4 p.m. The free fishing seminar is an opportunity for anglers to learn tight lining techniques, bait
selection and equipment usage. Guests will then head out
on the ice for the youth fishing tournament. Ice fishing
equipment will be provided.
Ed Shaw, interpreter for the Department of Natural
Resources, said the seminar is a free chance to learn from
the best anglers in the world.
Not only is a fishing license not required, we are providing the equipment as well, so this event is literally 100
percent free, Shaw said. Last year was one of the best
seminars weve ever had and were hoping for the same
success this year.
The DNR offers a free fishing weekend twice each year.
A free fishing weekend is also offered in the summer
June 11 and 12.
The weekends are an annual effort to encourage people
to get outside and enjoy fishing on both inland and Great
Lakes waters.
