Description:
This course examines mechanical design of functional, pragmatic products from
inception through implementation, including topics in computer-aided-design (CAD)
and finite element analysis (FEA). Lectures will discuss tolerancing, good drawing
practices, fasteners and threading, machine elements, etc. A final design project with
professional documentation including sketches, detailed and assembly CAD drawings,
a comprehensive design analysis including FEA, and cost breakdown will be included.
Student Learning Outcomes (ABET):
1) An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs
within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political,
ethical, health & safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.
Final project is a semester long effort of a product design.
2) An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.
Several re-design projects will be assigned throughout the semester.
3) An ability to communicate effectively.
Professional technical report due at the end of the semester.

4) An ability to use techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for
engineering practice.
Learn the use of Creo Parametric and Creo Simulate throughout the
duration of the course.
Software used: Creo Parametric 2.0 & Creo Simulate 2.0 (available 24/7 in 1019 Furnas
Hall)
NOTE:
A student version can be downloaded free of charge from the PTC website after
you create an account.
The student version of the software does not have the full capabilities of Creo
Simulate 2.0. There could also be compatibility issues with the student version
and the version in 1019 Furnas.
Texts Required:
Creo Parametric 2.0: Tutorial and MultiMedia DVD, Toogood & Zecher 2013.
Creo Simulate Tutorial Releases 1.0 & 2.0 (Structure and Thermal), Roger Toogood 2012.

Grading Policy:
All assignments and projects will be assigned a grade out of 100 points. 10 points will
be deducted for each day that an assignment or project is late. A valid excuse for
missing an exam or due date must be provided ahead of time in order to schedule a
makeup exam or establish an alternate due date.

The following grading scale will be used to determine final grades:

A: 93-100, A-:90-92, B+: 87-89, B: 83-86, B-: 80-82, C+: 77-79, C: 73-76, C-:70-72, D+: 67-69,
D: 65-66, F: below 65
Incomplete Grades
A grade of incomplete (I) indicates that additional course work is
required to fulfill the requirements of a given course. Students may only be given
an I grade if they have a passing average in coursework that has been
completed and have well-defined parameters to complete the course
requirements that could result in a grade better than the default grade.
Attendance:
Attendance for both the lecture and lab is mandatory. You will be responsible for
knowing all of the material covered in both lab and lecture.
Academic Integrity:
Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. For more information regarding UBs policy
