Taste of Medford Event on Sept. 19

The document is an article about the New Jersey Park Services implementing the Motorized Action Plan (MAP) in the Pinelands region to encourage responsible off-road vehicle use while protecting the environment. The MAP will clearly mark 225 miles of roads and trails open to vehicles. It aims to educate the public on preventing ecological damage from improper off-roading. While supporting environmental protection, some are concerned it may limit access for those with disabilities.

State MAP program to encourage

responsible use of off-road vehicles
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
A prize possession that has
been around for as long as the
Pinelands have existed will be undergoing restrictions when the
New Jersey Park Services Motorized Action Plan is implemented.
The goal of the organization is
to protect the environment and
encourage responsible use of offroad vehicles in Wharton State
Forest, which is by far the largest
unit in the state park system.
The plan consists of a map that
outlines nearly 225 miles of roads
and trails that are open to motorized vehicles, and a brochure that
explains the long-term damage
that can be caused by improper
off-roading.
The MAP program will ensure continued access to these
features while educating the public and making sure the regions
sensitive ecology is protected,
said Richard Boornazian, the Department of Environmental Protections assistant commissioner

for natural and historic resources.

The Pinelands Preservation Alliance fully supports this action
by the state Department of Environmental Protection.
We are pleased with DEPs
continued actions to address activities that result in negative impacts to Pinelands resources,
said Nancy Wittenberg, the executive director of the Pinelands
Commission.
Park Services will be more
clearly marking routes that are
not intended for vehicles but are
meant for the enjoyment of those
who are traveling on foot, bicycle
or horseback.
However, for those who have
limited mobility, this plan will essentially be negating them from
enjoying something they have relished for as long as they can remember, unless the DEP is able to
provide special permits to those
with disabilities.

Taste of Medford returns Sept. 19

By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
Medford residents looking for
good food, good music and, hopefully, good weather are in luck.
Medford will be putting a stamp
on a great summer by bringing
back its annual Taste of Medford on Sept. 19.
Each year, Medford brings the
township together to send summer off right with this familyfriendly event.
Adults will enjoy the tastes and

sounds of the town while the kids

enjoy a number of child-friendly
activities.
The Medford Business Association changes the kids events from
year to year.
This year, there will be a Jumpa-Lot Bounce, Marshal Steve's
Pony Rides and lawn tennis activities designed for the little ones
that the Arrowhead Tennis Club
hosts each year.
Another addition to this years
event for the adults to enjoy will
be a wine sampling from the 2014
gold and silver medal winner at
the NJ Wine Competition, Cream
Ridge Winery. The sampling will
be available at no extra charge
with an adult food sampling ticket purchase.
The Taste of Medford is put together by the members, trustees
and volunteers of the Medford
Business Association, working in
unison with The Medford Historical Society.
The Historical Society also
opens Kirbys Mill for the event,

holding tours and demonstrations.

Similar to the Art, Wine and
Music Festival in June, which is a
joint effort of the Medford Business Association and the Medford
Arts Center, Taste of Medford is a
great example of different organizations working together, executive director of the Medford Business Association, David Vaughn,
said.
This
years
participating
restaurants include Braddocks
Tavern, The Pop Shop, Femmina
Italian Grill, Tarantella Ristorante, Zinc Cafe, Illiano Cucina, Rosellis Italian Market,
Reilys Candy, PJ Whelihans and
the Taste of Medfords presenting
sponsor, ShopRite of Medford.
The participating restaurants
are always ready and eager to
treat new and existing customers
to their favorites, and to preview
the latest additions to the menu,
Vaughn said.

Fresh approach to betting needed

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

Its time for Congress to take the lead in legalizing sports betting
Dan McDonough Jr.

ew Jersey may never win its

battle in court to allow legalized sports betting in the
state. But new research shows that legalizing and regulating sports betting would be very beneficial to our
economy.
The American Gaming Association
last week estimated that Americans
will bet $95 billion on the National
Football League and college football
this season, and less than 4 percent of
that is expected to be wagered legally.
Illegal sports betting is reaching
new heights of popularity in America, said Geoff Freeman, the president and CEO of the Association. Its
clear that a federal ban on traditional
sports betting outside of Nevada is
failing.
GamblingCompliance, a global gaming research firm, estimated that a

like the one conducted in Nevada
would produce $12.4 billion in annual
revenue. To put that in perspective,
that would be more than the estimated
$12 billion in revenue the entire NFL
is expected to generate this year!
So whats the hold-up? For one, it
seems New Jerseys avenue of pursuing a lift of a federal ban on sports betting outside four states through court
isnt going to work. However, it has
brought to light a lot of pertinent issues, and benefits of changing the federal law. But that needs to happen at

the congressional level, not in court.

The heads of both the NBA and
MLB have said there needs to be a
fresh approach to sports betting.
Clearly, Americans are betting on
sports in widespread fashion, whether
the way they are doing it is legal.
Sports betting is not only commonplace, its no longer taboo.
Walk into your favorite chain bookstore or supermart, and youll find
sports betting guides in the magazine
aisle. Heck, ESPN the worldwide
leader in sports even started an entire section of its website dedicated to
covering the sports betting landscape
and providing bettors with advice.
The time is now to change the way
our country handles sports betting.
We are letting too much money fall
through our fingers at a time when we
need every cent we can get.

Township should help residents
determine safest streets
Recently, a young mother was killed riding her bicycle on Church Road. This reminded me of a young woman, somebodys
daughter/granddaughter, who was killed
on Branin Road about 10 years ago. Most of
Branin Road has no shoulder for a car to
pull off. Much of the road has a drainage

ditch on either side of the road. It appears

to be an old farm road. A few years ago, a
Medford Township fire truck plunged into
the drainage ditch on Branin Road.
There is a sharp curve on this road
where this young woman also lost her life.
The speed limit on the road is 50 miles per
hour. Why does Branin Road warrant a
speed limit of 50 miles per hour?
I recommend that Medford Township

publish yearly in the local newspapers a

list of each major street and roads in the
township with the number of accidents, fatalities, injuries and tickets issued for such
offenses as speeding, running red
lights/stop signs, careless driving, driving
while intoxicated, etc. The citizens of Medford Township can use this information to
decide which routes are the safest.

EVENT

The MBA likes to change the events
music style over the years, using bands
from different genres such as country, clas-

sic rock and jazz.

This year, it will be featuring the smooth
sounds of a local crowd favorite, M-Town
Jazz Jam.
There will be no selling of items or competition for the band or restaurants, as the
event is designed for people to sample food,
listen to music, relax and enjoy the day.

Taste of Medford was created more than

a decade ago as a way to focus attention on
the many restaurants throughout the township, allowing visitors to sample some of
their newest and best loved recipes. The
goal of the event is to promote the town

SEPT. 1622, 2015 THE MEDFORD SUN 11

Walk For Tourette syndrome is Sept. 20

For first time, New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome event in Medford Lakes
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
For the first time in its history,
the New Jersey Center for
Tourette Syndrome & Associated
Disorders will hold a walk in
Medford Lakes on Sept. 20.
Each year, the center assembles three walks, one in North
Jersey, Central Jersey and now
South Jersey.
As the nation's first center of
excellence for Tourette syndrome,
NJCTS is committed to the advocacy of individuals and families
living with TS and its associated
disorders.
Through programs such as NJ
Walks for TS, the organization is
making strides to spread awareness, acceptance and empowerment on behalf of kids living
with TS.
For some children, it's the
first chance they've had to see
other kids with TS. For parents
and siblings, to see hundreds of
other moms, dads, sisters and
brothers standing in support of
their loved one means a lot. It's extremely gratifying to watch hundreds of people gather as advocates for the TS community, said
Lisa Fortunato, communications
and public relations coordinator
for the New Jersey Center for
Tourette Syndrome & Associated
Disorders.
NJ Walks for TS was created by
kids, for kids, to help kids living
with TS by spreading awareness,
acceptance and empowerment.
It is a chance to stand up and
break the stigma around TS. We
want to show our support for our
friends, family and neighbors living with this misunderstood neurological disorder, Fortunato
said.
There is no cure for TS, but the
group is working to advocate for
collaborative research and better
treatments by raising funds with
these walks.
NJ Walks for TS was developed
in 2010 as a collaboration between
New Jersey Center for Tourette
Syndrome & Associated Disorders, and Mendham teenager
Emily Carrara to raise awareness
for Tourette syndrome.

TS is an inherited and often

misdiagnosed neurological disorder characterized by involuntary
sounds and movements known as
tics that affects one in 100 children.
Since the first walk in 2010, the
program has grown to be
statewide with a walk in Central
New Jersey at Princeton and, new
this year, the first walk in South
Jersey at Medford Lakes.
Jen Heicklen and Maureen
Faber have been instrumental in
bringing the walk to the Medford
area by making strides in promoting the event throughout the business community.
Like Heicklen, Faber also has a

daughter with TS and volunteers

her time to NJCTS.
(Jen) has worked tirelessly to
spread the word, recruit volunteers and gain the support of her
community.
She has two daughters with
TS, and she has been very brave
in not only sharing the challenges
they encounter, but also the emotions that come with raising children with special needs.
We are grateful for her spirit
and leadership in bringing NJ
Walks to South Jersey, Fortunato
said.
The walk is a 5k family fun

and hospitals across the state.
Our teams usually include
parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. It's wonderful to see these teams gather to

encourage the kids in their life,

Fortunato said. And watching
kids lead the way, literally carrying the banner for awareness and
acceptance of TS, speaks volumes.
If you would like to volunteer
on Sept. 20, contact NJCTS at

Participants will gather at
Beach 1 Upper Aetna Lake on
Tabernacle Road in Medford

on site registration and the walk
will kick off at 10 a.m.
The event will be rain or shine,
and the food and music will immediately follow the conclusion
of the walk.

using these unique qualities.

Medford is a great community,

and one of the ways we can showcase our town is by attracting visitors from miles around each year
with great festivals and events
that are fun for the whole family,

while providing exposure for our

fine restaurants, Vaughn said.
Also it provides an opportunity for local businesses to meet visitors in the Taste of Medford
Business Expo, which accompanies the festival.
The event will be held again
next year and may be experiencing a major change with the addition of Oktoberfest.
Oktoberfest has always been a
separate event in the past, but the
MBA is considering bringing the
festival back and merging the
two, perhaps as early as next
year, Vaughn said.
The MBA tries to keep costs
reasonable for folks to attend.
Tickets purchased prior to the
event are $12 for adults.
On the day of the event, tickets
are $15 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under, with children 3
years old and under free.
Anyone who is interested can
purchase tickets in advance at Columbia Bank on Route 70.
This is just a great event overall. If I were to try to single out
one part of the festival as my favorite, it would be taking a moment to pause in the middle of
the day to see families eating, enjoying themselves, relaxing and
listening to music, all while
knowing in the back of my mind
that we are helping our business
community, Vaughn said.

Pinelands Preservation Alliance

fully supports DEP plan
PINELANDS
Continued from page 1
Council meeting, Park Services
was in attendance to highlight the
reasons for implementing this
plan and to take questions and
comments.
There are five main objectives
that have been set out to be accomplished by enforcing the Motorized Action Plan.
Park Services will be looking to
identify routes that are open for
motorized access and keep motorized vehicles on these approved,
designated routes.
The group has walked every
road and every trail, and has each
point marked and put into a database using GPS technology.
Nothing is being closed, no access is in any way hampered for
hikers or equestrians, said
Thomas C. Keck Jr., superintendent of the State Park Service
southern region.
Another objective of the plan is
to coordinate emergency response for those called upon to
fight a forest fire or to tend to a 91-1 call.
Its impetrative for first responders to be able to get to the
victim or where the problem is
and take care of it without putting themselves in further jeopardy or their equipment in
harms way, Keck said.
Focusing maintenance efforts
on these designated routes is an
additional emphasis of the plan.
Weve invited people to utilize
a route, now theres a responsibility to keep those people safe,
Keck said.
Lastly, the plan was created to
help increase the education and
enforcement of Wharton State
Forest while protecting culturally
significant sites.
There are many historical
sites, natural resources and
threatened or endangered plant
and animal species in this forest.
Mayor Charles Watson said
this is all about enforcement, and
the fact that Park Services hasnt

enforced over the years has resulted in the Pinelands now being
in this position.
Its a position the council is not
happy to be in, specifically Councilman Chris Buoni.
The purpose of this MAP is to
establish access for motorized vehicles. I would say access has already been established in that forest since motorized vehicles have
existed. What were doing is we
are now denying access to roads
that access has already been established to, Buoni said.
While council commended
Park Services for its dedication
and efforts for taking what it

thinks are the best steps for preserving this habitat, it thought
the plan should be voted on by the
state.
Both the council and Park
Services agreed the forest belongs
to the taxpayers of the state, and
any township within the context
of the New Jersey Pinelands,
such as Medford, has a special
burden it carries when it comes
to ownership of the forest.
Buoni found it offensive how
little he felt the residents input
has meant to this process and had
trouble believing this plan has

any chance of not being implemented.
This plan is already in the
process of being implemented,
and the only reason that this is
now being presented to us, in my
opinion, is because you got
caught, Buoni said.
Many long-time residents of
the Pinelands have voiced their
displeasure with these changes
since they have been brought to
the public eye not long ago.
The plan is the first of its kind
in the state.
Representatives from Park
Services said this is a process that
will take time to iron out and will
not be settled overnight.
While the Motorized Access
Plan will promote responsible
recreation, many argued the
handful of examples of irresponsible ORV use that has damaged
the environment is a small fraction of how the majority of people use the forest and therefore
should not call for such drastic
measures.
Many also argued that a mere
sign would not dissuade these
folks who have been off-roading
recklessly for so long, so the plan

would not be effective.

No one condones illegal activity. Everybody wants to be part of
a public solution, but you cannot
be a part of a solution without an
open, healthy discussion in which
you arrive at that solution, Medford resident Pola Galie said.
Galie also said open stakeholder meetings are critical in reaching that solution because, although not everyone will be 100
percent satisfied, they will be able
to influence the direction in
which this is headed.
The map the residents have
been issued does not say draft on
it. In fact, Wharton State Forest
Superintendent Rob Auermuller
and a team of volunteers have already begun posting No Motorized Vehicles signs on many of
the forest sand roads that have
been open to traffic for decades.
Brochures and maps showing
what roads are available for
which means of transportation
will be accessible at the Batsto
Village Visitor Center, located off
Burlington County Route 542,
east of Hammonton, and at the
Atsion Recreation Area, located
off Route 206 in Shamong.
