SEPTEMBER 2015

Pastor Brian Sanderson

Ministry in Motion
Its hard to imagine that over a month of ministry has already gone
by. My family and I are falling in love with Ocala and the fine folks
of Druid Hills UMC. I have witnessed and experienced firsthand the
benefits of the Church operating as the body of Christ and sharing
their gifts in ministry to the glory of God.
As I began this role as Pastor I prayerfully set out to keep my ears
open more than my mouth to truly hear and discern the spiritual
pulse and potential of our Church. This will be an ongoing process
of course, but Good News! This Church has a good pulse and a
blessed future. There are plenty of ministries already in motion and
the potential exists to creatively step out in faith and make disciples
of Jesus Christ in new and exciting ways.
I have enjoyed getting to know everyone, from visits with charter
members, the homebound, those in hospitals and nursing homes,
those in and around the church office, and out in the community. I
am also encouraged by the faith stories Ive learned and by the love
you all have for you Lord and being a part of the Church. I have especially been impressed with the enthusiasm with which worship is
approached. There is no greater activity that we engage in together
than the worship of our Lord.
We are entering the fall season, our children are going back to
school, and several of our main ministries are starting back. I truly
believe that we will embrace this as an opportunity to Serve Christ
by Learning, Leading, and Loving.
In His Service,

Prayer serves as the backbone of the church. It is what

supports all our efforts of ministry. In that spirit, you
are invited to hold these persons in your prayers and
thoughts. Just as the Spirit needs healing, so does the
body. The two, it seems, go together in Gods plan.
Please remember these people in prayer:
Vivian Bathurst, Bob Brombacker, Rose Carroll, Linda Boddy, Jan
Bullock, Eunice Charles, John & Joyce Clayton, Tiffany Critchfield,
Amy Foster, Ron Gamble, Edith & Nick Caroleo, Richard Gordy,

THANK YOU..

A Little girl told her mom,

When I grow up, Im going to marry the boy next
door. Why is that?
asked her mom. Because
you told me I cant cross
the street.

With a grateful heart we thank you,

church family, for praying for our son,
Jake, during his Air Force training
schools. You have faithfully lifted him
in prayers since January as he attended 6 trainings and finished July 31. He
is now Mission Ready as a Flight
Nurse. You have also prayed for Jordan, our youngest son, with his various oral surgeries. To know you have
people who stand in the gap and pray
for your needs so faithfully is awesome. This is one of the reasons we
are glad to be a part of this body of
believers!

LEESBURG WOMENS RETREAT

The Ladies of Druid Hills will be going to the annual Womens Retreat. There will be a meeting on September 13th, after church, up
front in the Sanctuary, for all those interested. The theme for 2016
is COME HOLY SPIRIT! Dates to choose from are: January 29-31:
February 26-28 : and April 1-3. The retreat is held at the United
Methodist Life Enrichment Center in Fruitland Park (north of
Leesburg). For questions contact Terri Silvola-Finch 369-0614.

PUMPKIN PATCH - Its just around the corner!

News from Roy
We are well known as the Pumpkin Patch church. First delivery of our pumpkins is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7 at 4:30 pm. Our second load is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 4:30 pm. Students from Forest High School JFROTC have volunteered to assist in unloading. A good turnout for this event is encouraged
and additional help is always welcomed. There will be a sign-up sheet for storytellers and sellers. This is our
churchs fundraiser and we need everyones help. It is fun to meet the children and families who come to
the Patch. Many families take advantage of the photo op, posing their children among the big orange pumpkins. School children come to hear special stories and take a small pumpkin home. They also color harvest
pictures for a chance to win a prize. Our excitement is soon to begin, please plan to be a part of it. You wont
regret it. Set-up of the Pumpkin Patch will be MONDAY, Oct 5th At 9 AM. Helpers are needed, everyone is invited. Come join us. For any questions, please call Roy Baugher at 237-5629.

Storyteller News
The pumpkins are coming! The pumpkins are coming! And, so are the kids! We need storytellers! The pumpkins will arrive October 7th and the stories will start on October 13th. Every year, we host preschoolers
and kindergarteners from all over Marion County. Classes are scheduled between 9:30 and 11:30 am Monday
through Friday starting October 13th and ending on October 27th. We read stories to them and they play in
the Patch. This is one of the most rewarding events at the Pumpkin Patch. Many of these kids have never been
to a patch, theyve never sat on a hay bale and a lot of them have never seen a Little Red Wagon. We provide the books and you provide the voice. If this is a ministry you would enjoy, please contact Terri SilvolaFinch. Wrapped candy is given to the children who attend story time. Monetary or candy (no chocolate) donations for this ministry may be given to the office or Roy Baugher.

ADVENT CHALLENGE : WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Last year's challenge was incredibly successful and so many lives were touched by this act of generosity, the
leadership of the church wanted to do it again this year. Once again our goal between now and Christmas
Eve is to raise $5,250.00 to be split between Stop Hunger Now and Local Outreach Missions. Of our goal,
$2,900 will go to our global charity, Stop Hunger Now, as we strive to host another meal packaging event to
help those children around the world that are suffering from malnourishment. The other $2,350 will go to
local out reach missions; such as Church Has Left the Building and Open Arms Village at St. Marks
* Our Goal $ 5,250.00 *
Please prayerfully consider how you might give, above and beyond your normal giving, to support
this challenge so we may reach out and share the love of Christ with other people.
CHILDRENS DRAMA WORKSHOP will be held in the Education Building at 10:00am on the following
Saturdays: Sept 12, Oct 10, and Nov 14th. We need participation in these events to continue, please join us!

S.O.S. (Sisters of Soul)

Attention All Ladies: you are invited to join us the 3rd Sunday of each month, at 12:30
in Fellowship Hall after our lunch. The organizations our group supports are PACE Center for Girls, Kimberlys Cottage, Kids Central, Veterans Home in Ft. McCoy and Homeless Children & Youth Project (with the Marion County
Public Schools). UPCOMING PROJECTS: During the month of September we will be collecting Back to School
Supplies . In October, November and December items for a Kitchen Shower will be collected to support Kids Central
and those teenagers that are leaving the system and entering a home.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN: Our next meeting will be Tuesday, September 15th at 10:00 AM, in the
Library. These meetings are open to ALL Ladies of the Church! PLEASE JOIN US.
MOVING FORWARD will meet on Monday, September 7th at the Church; please bring a bag lunch. On September
11th will be be going to the Forest United Methodist Church for a Bean Soup Lunch. This is a nice way to foster relationships and open communications with other groups with the UM Community. We will meet at 11:15 to car pool.

FRIENDS OF THE FOREST MASONIC LODGE WOULD LIKE YOU ALL TO KNOW That on the first
Friday of each month, starting October 2nd they will be serving up their delicious spaghetti dinner. Dinner
will be served from 4:00pm - 6:30pm at a cost of $8.00 each and will include salad, beverage, and choice of
desserts. Lets help support them as they help support us with our fundraising dinners during the year.

Greetings, brothers and sisters,
Thanks for your support of the Florida United Methodist Childrens Home, including the Fifth Sunday Offerings on May 31st and
August 30th. They are much appreciated.
With the new school year, the Homes on-site Legacy Scholars (formerly Aldersgate) Academy in Enterprise is ready to help students improve academically and more. Last school year (2014-15), the academy helped 29 children; 86% of them saw an improvement in their GPAs. Thirty four students will be attending Legacy Scholars Academy this year, which is staffed by 10 certified
teachers and assisted by paraprofessional aides.
While the teachers are paid by the Volusia County School District, the Home and donors help provide other operating expenses
for Legacy Scholars Academy. To learn more about supporting the academy and its students, contact Lynn Bellomy at 386-6685088, ext. 2321, or [email protected]. You can also visit www.allchildrenfirst.org, go to Making a Difference, and
click on Ways to Help.
At our Madison Youth Ranch campus, the Stickney Stable for Equine Therapy was completed and dedicated on July 10th. Horses
are already being stabled there, and an equine therapy program should be in place within the next few months. Similar programs
for the residents at the Enterprise campus are already bringing positive results.
Please continue to pray for the children and staff at the Home and Madison Youth Ranch.
Blessings,
Anne Zecca, Local Church Representative
Florida United Methodist Childrens Home

Cancer Survivor Support Group

Druid Hills United Methodist Church is sponsoring a Cancer Survivor Support Group. The Support Group
will meet on the second Thursday of each month evenings at 7:00 P.M. in the Church Library. The meetings
will be open to anyone, especially the recently diagnosed and spouses, partners or others involved in the
support system of cancer patients.
Two local mental health counselors have volunteered to provide support, as needed, at no charge during
our meetings.
I was recently diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma and know firsthand how difficult it is to deal with an unexpected diagnosis of this type. Fortunately, my wife was my rock and provided the strength that I needed
to make it through the diagnosis and surgery. I was unaware of the toll that it took on her until approximately two weeks after surgery.
Given the emotional impact on the patient and the strain placed on his/her personal support system, it is our
belief that this group will truly serve as a mission to the community. We plan to open the meetings to not
only members of the congregation, but also to those in the community that may find themselves dealing with
this emotional upheaval.
Once again, our Cancer Survivor Support Group meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM
in the Church Library. If you would like more information please contact me at 352-694-6259 or send me
an email at [email protected]
