Structured Learning Episode

This 3-hour lesson covers the development of classroom assessment tools to measure knowledge and reasoning. Students will learn about objective and non-objective tests, how to construct a table of specifications and rubrics, and write test items. The activity involves dividing students into groups to select a task on creating assessment tools. Students will then apply their learning by reconstructing test questions, preparing a table of specifications for sample topics, and sharing their work. The goal is for students to continually improve their skills in developing and assessing different evaluation methods.

Assessment tools are very necessary for the teacher to

assess the progress of his learners through fair and legitimate
evaluation.
Developments of objective tests require careful planning and
expertise in terms of actual test construction.
A table of specifications (TOS) is a test map that guides the
teacher in constructing a test.
Non-objective tests require students to organize their
thoughts on a subject matter in coherent sentences in order
to inform an audience.
A rubric is created to help teachers assess the output of the
learners.
The teacher normally prepares a draft of the test. Such draft
is subjected to item analysis and validation in order to ensure
that the final version of the test would be useful and
functional.

By the end of the discussion the students will be able to:

1. Understand the concept of development of assessment tools.
2. Construct a Table of Specifications (TOS).
3. Construct test items for both Objective and Non-Objective Type
of tests.
4. Construct a rubric for non-objective type of test.
5. Apply the steps in creating test items

Sample of table of specifications

Resources

Powerpoint presentation:
Objective Tests (Planning Identifying test objectives,
preparing table of specifications, selecting the test formatselection type/supply type; Construction and Try-Out- Item
writing, content validation, item try-out, item analysis, and
item revision).

Non-Objective Test (Planning, Constructiong Restricted

Essay, and Extended Essay; Developing rubric for essay testsetting
Criteria and Setting Performance Levels).

pieces of paper provided by the reporters. The paper contains the task
the group is asked to do.

Your group is given 20 minutes for discussion and a maximum of

three (3) minutes for the presentation.
Your group will share their output in the plenary wherein the
group leader will be asked to present.

Ask the following:

What does your group feel when you are creating test
questions?
On what areas/aspects do you think your group needs to
improve regarding the development of the different
assessment tools?

Instructions:
Each group will reconstruct their test questions.
Facilitators will distribute sample topics to be tested and each
group will prepare a TOS.
Assign a student to consolidate the output of the group.

Ask the students to share their responses to the following

questions:
Where you able to apply all the things that you learn in this
discussion to your output?
What can you say about the development of the different
assessment tools?
Concluding
Activity

"We plan. We develop. We deliver. We assess and evaluate the

results of the assessment. We revise, deliver the revised material,
and assess and evaluate again. Perfection is always just out of

reach; but continually striving for perfection contributes to keeping

both our instruction fresh and our interest in teaching piqued."
