Medford will have two representatives on the United States
Womens U-17 National Field
Hockey team for this upcoming
season.
These two local products have
begun their journey in which
they will be representing their
country before being legally of
age to drive in it.
Erica Solomen, a 13-year-old
eighth-grader, and Gianna Glatz,
a rising junior at Shawnee High
School, both turned heads at the
country-wide tryout and will now
have the opportunity to showcase
their skillset to the world.
The tryouts consisted of the
committee trimming more than
230 players to just 16 for the final
roster after four rounds of assessing the talent.

seats in November election

Novembers Board of Education election in Medford Public
Schools will consist of four candidates filed to run for the boards
three open seats, according to the
Burlington County Clerks office.
Incumbents Janet Law Clancy

and Kathleen Chang, and newcomers Heather Keleher and

Stephen Capello are the four candidates.
The Medford Board of Education election will take place alongside the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

State Police outfitting troopers with body cameras; more could come across state

spending $1.5 million to outfit
1,000 troopers over the next
nine months with body cameras. Its a
hefty price to pay for technology, but a
very small one when considering the
good it will do.
Body cameras for police have become increasingly popular throughout
the country following police shootings
that made national headlines in places
such as Ferguson, Mo.
Troopers will wear the body cameras on either their shirt or their hat,
and will be required to turn them on
during traffic stops, protests, investigations and while making arrests.

Hoffman said the cameras will act as
an objective witness in police-involved
shootings and other use-of-force incidents.
Some local police departments, such
as Glassboro, Paulsboro, Evesham and
even Rowan University, have already
adopted body cameras for their police
forces. And more could be coming, as

the state plans to use $2.5 million in

forfeiture funds to help other local departments buy cameras.
Police body cameras are a wonderful
idea, and any state money that can be
used to help local departments outfit
their officers with them is a good
thing.
The safety and security of the people
of New Jersey are of the utmost importance, above all other concerns of
living in our state. Any initiative that
improves that safety and security
while at the same time serving as an
objective judge for citizens and officers is something that should be explored and implemented.

Council addresses noise ordinance complaints

Residents recently concerned with weekend noise coming from JCC camp

The noise ordinance was once again the
first topic on the list of discussion items at
last weeks Medford Town Council meeting.
Mayor Charles Watson, along with the
township manager and township zoning officer, met with three representatives from
the JCC camp, including the camp director.
We discussed the issue with them. They
seemed very understanding about the situation and said they were actually finished
for the year with that particular activity,
Watson said.
The activity refers to the band playing
that has had residents in the area up in
arms about the amount of excessive noise
that it gives off from sunrise to sunset on
weekends.
By the end of the meeting, they understood that they were potentially violating
the planning board approvals, Watson
said.

It turns out that this activity is primarily run by young adults, mostly college students.
For next year, the camp stated that it
would try to come up with a better plan
that is not going to affect the neighbors as
much.
Before they sign a contract with anyone
permitting that activity again, they said
they would come back to us and make sure
it is something that we can all agree on,
Watson said.
This led to more talks about potential
changes to the townships noise ordinance
in general.
A few residents whose houses back to
the JCC camp spoke in the public comment
session in regard to this topic.
We have a couple houses for sale in the
neighborhood, and if people come and look
at houses on the weekend and hear this
noise, it makes it awfully hard for people
that need to move for whatever reason, 15year Medford resident Jeanne Hauser said.
Earl Stahl, who owns a solar farm in the

area, made a suggestion to council to keep

in mind when amending the noise ordinance.
When I got the solar farm approved out
on 85 acres, we had to prove that the inverters didnt exceed the state noise decibel
limit, so there is a law when it comes to
that, Stahl said. Just some information
to keep in mind moving forward on this ordinance.
The council has reviewed a wealth of information in regard to this topic since the
last meeting, including the Cherry Hill
noise ordinance and the state guidelines.
We obviously dont want to do anything
haphazardly thats going to affect residents
or their abilities to do things, so I would
like to form a subcommittee that will look
at the noise ordinance and report back to
council with any changes that may be necessary, Watson said.

For most of the summer swimming season, the Deer Brook
Swim Clubs girls 9-10 200-meter
freestyle relay team had come
within a second of the club
record numerous times with multiple combinations of swimmers.
For the biggest meet of the
year at the Tri-County Swimming
Pool Association Championships,
the team went with the combination of Abby Zane, Lilly Derivaux, Kalena Gatesman and
Maggie Hill to swim in the event.
That team of four was not only
able to break the swim clubs
record time in the event, but it

Once we got out of the pool, it
was like oh my gosh we set a new
record, Abby said. Then it just
dies down and then it comes back
up. Whenever someone brings it
up again, you get so excited.
Lilly felt the strength of the
competition at Tri-County was
what made setting the record
most special.
It was a great achievement because the competition was so
strong, she said.
Abby, Lilly and Kalena had
been a part of the relay team for
most of the season, but all of
them missed a meet or two at different parts of the season, forcing
the team to shuffle the lineup in a
number of weeks.

Abby said the constantly shuffling lineup made it difficult to

compare the relay teams times
from meets.
It was hard because people
had different speeds and different
touches, she said.
In addition, Maggie did not
swim in the freestyle relay until
the Tri-County meet. Maggie
missed the early part of the season due to an illness. Once she got
back into the pool, it took her a
little bit of time to get back into
the swing of things.
It was difficult to come back
because it meant I had to work especially hard, Maggie said.
Despite the late start to the season, Maggie didnt feel deterred
from shooting her personal best
times, a goal she has during every
swimming season.
Each year I always go for a
personal best, she said. I want
to do the best I can do.
All of the girls have been swimming competitively for Deer

Brook for a few years now. Abby

said she enjoys swimming because of the feeling of freedom
she has in the pool.
Its the closest thing to flying,
she said. It feels refreshing and it
feels good. It feels like thats
where I belong.
Maggie said swimming was
one of her favorite hobbies and it
keeps her coming back every
summer.
I like swimming just because
its a lot of fun, Maggie said.
Lilly said she enjoys swimming
in the relays and cheering her
friends on, but she doesnt remember a relay ever being as exciting as this years Tri-County
meet.
Cheering each other on during relays is always fun, but to
cheer each other on during a
record-breaking swim was the
most exciting, Lilly said.
The Tri-County season is over
for another summer, but all of the
girls are already looking ahead to
the 2016 season and achieving
new personal bests. Some girls,
such as Abby, are looking way beyond next season in their swimming careers.
I want to go and swim in college some day, she said.

Police: Route 70 crash

results in injuries
On July 30 at approximately
12:40 p.m., the Medford Township
police, fire and EMS were dispatched to the area of State Highway 70 and Eayrestown Road for a
report of a motor vehicle crash
with injuries. Upon arrival, police found a
Toyota Corolla in the
roadway with heavy
front end damage, and
a Ford box truck approximately 50 yards off the roadway in a field. The driver of the
Toyota and a front seat passenger
were both in the vehicle and complaining of neck and back pain.
Both subjects were removed from
the vehicle by EMS and fire personnel and transported by ambulance to Virtua Mt. Holly. The
driver of the box truck complained of left arm pain and was
transported to Virtua Marlton for
evaluation. Initial investigation

indicates the Toyota was south on

Eayrestown Road and failed to
stop at the red traffic signal. The
Toyota was subsequently struck
by the Ford box truck which was
east on Route 70. The crash is still
under investigation.

for a reported shoplifting. Investigation revealed that an unknown
male entered the store and stole
about eight Boost Mobile phone
cards and fled on a bicycle. A
male was later located riding a bicycle down Route 70. He was later
identified as the shoplifter and
was subsequently placed under
arrest. After being processed, he
was charged with shoplifting and
released pending a court appearance.

Needless to say, the girls were

very excited when they were
given the big news.
It was an incredible feeling
knowing all my hard work is paying off, on and off the court,
Glatz said.
Solomens situation is a bit different as she is one of the
youngest players on the team. In
fact, she didnt find out she made
the team until a few days after it
was posted because she and her
mom assumed she probably
wouldnt make it, so they didnt
check the announcement of the
final roster right away.
My mom came into my room
late at night and told me while I

was half asleep, Solomen said. I

thought she was joking, but then I
realized she wasn't. I was so
happy I jumped right out of bed
and hugged her.
The girls tried out for the team
because they wanted the opportunity to play at the highest level to
challenge themselves at a young
age.
Solomen was encouraged to try
out by one of the coaches, Jun
Kentwell, after she caught some
of Solomens games with her club
team in the winter and was very
impressed.
Both of the girls have been
playing the game since elementary school and still cant get
enough of it.
I just love the competition and
passion to win. Not only do I want
to win every game, but as a goal
keeper, I will go for every ball at
any cost, Glatz said. My goal is
to bring intense play to each practice session and game situation
every time I walk onto a court or
a field.
Glatz is a goalkeeper for
Shawnee and credits a lot of her
success to having the opportunity
to face the stout competition all
season long the Renegades tough
schedule provides.
There was only one goalie selected to the team, so she was chosen by the selection committee
among the group that tried out as
the best goalie under the age of 17
in the United States.
This was especially impressive
due to the fact that she barely
stands at 53 so she was at a disadvantage before even taking the
field playing a position that is predominantly dictated by bigger
girls.
Knowing I came out on top as
the only U17 goalkeeper is insane, Glatz said.
Solomen is not as far along in
her career, but she has as much

passion for the game as anyone

on the field.
My favorite thing about field
hockey is everything. From the
intensity of the game to that moment you finally get to use a skill
you've been practicing for months
in a game situation. It's a fun
sport that I appreciate and enjoy
playing. This game is as much
mental as it is physical, and I really have such a passion for it,
Solomen said.
She cannot wait to take the
field with her teammates and
soak up as much as she can from
them and the outstanding coaching staff that runs the team.
It is an absolute honor to be
selected. Words simply can't express how grateful I am for this
opportunity to represent the USA
as well as being instructed by
some of the top coaches and getting the opportunity to play this
game with so many amazingly
talented teammates, Solomen
said.
She went on to talk about what
her attitude will be like going into
this as one of the youngest players on the team.
I will approach this experience by taking this opportunity to
learn everything I possibly can
from my coaches and from my
teammates who have more experience than me. I'm hoping to
grow as a player from the instruction I will be receiving and by
having the opportunity to play
with other athletes who have
such great skill and talent,
Solomen said. I cant wait to see
how much I grow as a player.
Both girls plan to continue to
play field hockey down the road
and fulfill their dreams of playing
at the collegiate level.
The team will be off to Holland
later in the year where it will get
the chance to take on the top competition from around the globe. It
will also be traveling to Belgium
for four matches against more
elite competition.
