Dr.
Hayes Wicker, Senior Pastor
Back in the Saddle Again
As you know, I grew up in and love the west. Janet and
I returned this week from a relaxing vacation in Colorado
Springs and Beaver Creek. We enjoyed the cool air and
the warm fellowship with FBCN seasonal friends who live in
Rocky Mountain country. We were also blessed to be with
Allyson and Scott. Thank you, church family, for allowing
your pastors and staff to get away. Its good to be back in
the saddle again, as the cowboy sang. I am grateful for the
men who supplied the pulpit, each different yet significant
in the Body.
I am beginning my new sermon series, Understanding and Overcoming
Temptation. While driving down the steep grade into Denver, I saw a warning
sign that read something like this: Truckers, you are not at the bottom yet. You
still have a steep grade. We believers are not in Heaven yet or immune from
stumbling and crashing.
A do-it-yourself approach toward warfare is doomed; its not a fifty-fifty
proposition with God. This is the victory that has overcome the world-our faith
(1 John 5:4). We resist the devil, obey the Word, but we depend on the Lord.
The ultimate hostile, Satan, is on the warpath.
We welcome Mark Bates this weekend, who is in view of a call as Pastor of
Sports Outreach. The staff, personnel committee, FBA head coaches, and other
leaders recommend him. He has served in churches, Christian schools, and as
Athletic Director and Soccer Coach at Clearwater Christian College. Hes not
all hat and no cattle, as the old western saying describes a city dude. He has
spiritual and experiential depth.
It is truly a God thing that we learned of Mark the week that the school announced
closing and when Kevin Van Duser resigned. Steven Curtis Chapman sang,
Saddle up your horses, weve got a trail to blazewith Gods amazing grace.
*There is a guest reception in the Commons following the Saturday night and
Sunday morning worship services. Pastor would love to meet you!
Welcome to First Baptist Church Naples

In View of a Call This Weekend
Mark Bates
Pastor of Sports Outreach
Mark Bates comes to First Baptist in view of a
call with a vast array of sports knowledge as
well as administrative ability. Most recently, he
was the womens soccer coach at Clearwater
Christian College where he also served as
Director of Recruitment. At Clearwater, Mark
coached the womens soccer team to two
separate national championships. While he
obviously has a love for coaching, his main
passion is training and discipleship of young
men and women into Christ-likeness. Prior to
that, he served in various church staff positions, two separate Christian schools,
and a Christian camp in Arizona. Mark and his wife Donna have three grown
sons. Please join us in discerning a call to serve with FBCN and praying for
Gods will to be done.

Home Bible & Life Groups (BLGs)
Launching Again This Fall
Every weekend, we have over 30 adult Bible and Life Groups
meeting on our church campus in what we consider to be one
of the most important ministries at FBCN. BLGs are where
the Bible is taught in a small group format, but also where life
happens and people truly become part of the family. In the
fall, we will once again launch our Home Bible & Life Groups.
Groups will meet in homes around the Naples community,
and are typically held in the evenings. If you are interested in
leading or hosting a home BLG this fall, please contact John
David Edie at
[email protected] or Rhonda at 596-8600 x261.
