Rossini Italian Girl in Algiers
Haydn Symphony no. 104
L'italiana in Algeri (The Italian Girl in Algiers) Overture
The overture is widely recorded and performed today and well
known for its distinctive opening of slow, quiet pizzicato basses,
leading to a sudden loud burst of sound from the full orchestra.
This surprise portrays an admiration for Joseph Haydn, whose
Symphony No. 94 in G major, The Surprise Symphony, is named
for the same shocking, semi-comic affect. Gioachino Rossinis
work was first performed at the Teatro San Benedetto, Venice
on 22 May 1813.
The Symphony no. 104 in D major (Hoboken 1/104) is
Haydn's final symphony. Known as the London Symphony,
the work was composed by Haydn while he was living in
London in 1795, and premiered at the Kings Theatre on 4
May 1795, in a concert entirely of Haydn's own compositions
and directed by the composer.
Mozart Haffner Serenade
The Serenade for orchestra in D major, K. 250, by Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart (known as the Haffner Serenade), was
commissioned by Sigmund Haffner the Younger to be used in
the festivities before the wedding of his sister Marie Elisabeth
Haffner to Franz Xaver Spaeth. The Serenade was first played on
21 July 1776, on the eve of the wedding. Of the eight
movements, the following are to be performed in this concert:
1 Allegro maestoso - Allegro molto
6 Andante
7 Menuetto - Trio I - Trio II
8 Adagio - Allegro assai
Movements:
1. Adagio Allegro
2. Andante
3. Menuetto and Trio: Allegro
4. Finale: Spiritoso
