Opposition to Rauner's Budget Cuts

1) Reverend Jesse Jackson and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition oppose Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner's proposed budget cuts, arguing they will harm Illinois families, students, teachers, workers, and the elderly. 2) Rauner's $3-3.5 billion budget shortfall is not significantly different than the state Democrats' $4 billion shortfall, but his cuts would eliminate jobs for 1,400 educators and reduce funding for autism programs, hospitals, nursing homes and disabled services. 3) Many social services organizations, including the Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County, would be forced to lay off hundreds of employees, damaging Illinois' tax base and economic health.

Opposition to Gov. Rauner Budget Cuts
Chicago, Illinois - July 4, 2015 -- Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. -- The current coverage of the budget battle
between Governor Bruce Rauner and State Democrats is misleading and potentially dangerous in its
consequences.
Gov. Rauner uses a phony frame to his favor; creating the false impression of fiscal responsibility. In reality,
Rauners budget is not balanced nor is it responsible.
Gov. Rauners budget creates a shortfall between $3 to 3.5 billion, according to the bipartisan Center for
Tax and Budget Accountability . The State Democrats budget creates a shortfall of $4 billion.
The difference, contrary to the self-congratulation of Rauner and his supporters, is not significant in its
fiscal impact. It is disastrous in the damage it will create in the lives of Illinois workers, retirees, students,
and families.
The margin between the two proposed budgets is the fracture students and teachers will feel when, as the
Chicago Teachers Union predicts, 1400 educational employees will lose their jobs.
The margin between the two proposed budgets is not balance, but the edge of separation between
thousands of poor and sick people and the services they desperately require, but will lose, if Rauners
budget passes. The budget includes $1 million in cuts to Autism Programs, $60 million in cuts to hospitals,
$65 million in cuts to nursing homes, and millions more in cuts to programs assisting the disabled.
All of these cuts will inflict harm on Illinois children, workers, and service providers who are the foundation
of the States security. Removing the foundation will cause collapse. It will deplete the tax base of
revenues gained from government and nonprofit employees, and it will threaten the future of the states
health.
The Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County, the largest non-profit
organization in Illinois, will lay off 250 workers if Rauners cuts become reality. This example and others
make painful illustration of how Rauners budget proposes little short term pleasure, but promises long
term pain.
Families in need, teachers, ministers, and workers will unite, forming a broad and brave coalition, to
oppose the social cruelty and fiscal irresponsibility of Rauners budget on Saturday, July 11, at the Rainbow
PUSH Coalition Headquarters, located at 930 East 50th Street in Chicago, IL, at 10 am. Rainbow PUSH will
lead a march to give support to Illinois children, seniors, and workers.
