Characteristic Based Forecasting
Characteristic Based Forecasting
In industries with numerous product variants like automotive or high-tech, forecasting every possible combination is impractical due to the sheer volume of options. CBF requires selecting key characteristics essential for planning purposes to manage complexity. Maintaining data accuracy across numerous single-value characteristics and profiles can be challenging, as changes in planning data cause deletion from the set change date. The inability to use complex tabular dependencies or decision tables further complicates variant management .
In the CBF scenario within SAP APO, only single-value characteristics can be used in planning tables and planning profiles. Planning tables cannot be deleted if they are used in a profile, and only one active profile is possible per product . Additionally, when changes are made to the planning profile, all previous planning data is deleted from the set change date onwards . Furthermore, promotion planning is not possible, and variant tables (decision tables) cannot be used .
During the explosion of the Production Data Structure (PDS) in Characteristics-Based Forecasting, SAP APO calculates dependent requirements for components by referencing the forecast demand plan for characteristic values and their combinations. This process creates dependent requirements in PP/DS, which can then be converted into production orders or purchase requisitions, ensuring that component needs are met to produce the desired product configurations .
Generating a Production Data Structure (PDS) is crucial in Characteristics-Based Forecasting because it provides the necessary configuration information required during the explosion process to determine the dependent demand for components. PDS, either generated from Integrated Product and Process Engineering models or SAP R/3 production versions, ensures accurate creation of dependent requirements, aligning component production with characteristic-specific demand .
Integration of Characteristics-Based Forecasting (CBF) with SAP APO's Production Planning/Detailed Scheduling (PP/DS) component allows manufacturers to efficiently plan and procure individual components based on forecast data for different product variants. Sales orders for configurable materials consume planned independent requirements (PIRs), facilitating synchronization between demand forecasts and production planning. This ensures components are available when needed, reducing lead times and inventory costs .
In SAP APO's Characteristics-Based Forecasting, numerical characteristics need to be converted to character format because planning tables can only accommodate single-value characteristics . This conversion ensures compatibility with the system's requirement for character data types, facilitating seamless integration and processing within the planning tables.
In SAP APO, forecast consumption by sales orders for configurable products occurs through the creation of consumption groups, which link sales orders to planned independent requirements (PIRs). When a sales order is created in SAP R/3, it consumes the existing PIRs for the corresponding product configuration. This integration ensures that actual sales orders adjust the demand plan dynamically, aligning forecasts with real demand .
Updating historical data in Characteristics-Based Forecasting (CBF) in SAP APO involves transferring data into Business Warehouse (BW) for processing. BW allows conversion of numeric characteristics to a character format necessary for integration with planning tables. BW also facilitates the extraction of data to InfoCubes, accommodating regular updates. Certain features, like creating update routines, must be observed for effective data display and reporting .
Characteristics-Based Forecasting (CBF) in SAP APO enables the forecasting of demand at both the product and characteristics level for configurable products such as cars which can have numerous variants based on different characteristics like color, engine size, and optional features. CBF allows the creation of demand plans for combinations of characteristic values, enabling businesses to react swiftly to changes in market demand. It aids in timely ordering of assemblies and components by integrating with the SAP APO Production Planning/Detailed Scheduling component .
In SAP APO's Characteristics-Based Forecasting, planning books are limited to a maximum of twenty key figures. Additional key figures that are necessary for functionalities such as disaggregation must also be added to the planning book. Furthermore, in promotions, characteristics-based forecasting lacks support for promotion planning, reducing flexibility in handling promotional aspects .
