Introduction to How to Make Origami Flowers
The purpose of this document is to provide step-by step instructions on how to make and Iris,
Water Lilly, and lotus flower origami. These instructions are for beginners in origami and trained
origami persons who would like to receive additional instruction. The only requirement is that
the user must know how to properly fold paper and follow instructions.
This document will cover 3 sections:
1. Step-by-step instructions for an origami Iris flower.
2. Step-by-step instructions for an origami Water Lily flower.
3. Step-by-step instructions for an origami Lotus flower.

Instructions for making an origami Iris flower
Material needed
You will only need one square sheet of paper. Colored origami paper is preferred.
Folding into a rectangle shape
1. Fold the paper along both diagonals.
2. Unfold it, it will give you an Xshaped crease.

3. Turn the paper over.
4. Fold from in half from left to right.
5. Unfold the paper.

6. Fold the paper in half from top to bottom. (Do not unfold.) You will end with a rectangle
shape

Making the diamond shape
1. Gently push together the top-left and top-right corner of the paper. (The bottom layer of
the paper will lift up as you push the corners toward each over.)

2. Pivot the front flat of the paper that points toward you to the right.
3. Turn the paper, there is another flat that points back.
4. Pivot the model to the right (opposite to the front flat).

Making the squash fold
First, you have to make sure the open-end of the paper points down.
1. Lift the upper layer of the right side.

2. Open it by putting your fingers in the pocket.

3. Squash it down.
4. Turn the paper on the other side.

5. Repeat step 1 to 3.
a. Lift the upper layer of the right side.
b. Open it by putting your fingers in the pocket.
c. Squash it down.
6. Like turning the pages of a book, pivot the squashed flap from the left to the right.

Making the petal folds
For this part, make sure that the part that looks folded points downward.
1. Lift the upper layer of
the right side.
2. Open it by putting
your fingers in the
pocket.
3. Squash it down.

4. Crease the sides into the
pocket. This will create a
pointing little flat.

5. Fold the pointy flap
down.
6. Turn the paper and
repeat step 1 to 5.

7. Like flipping the pages
of a book, turn two
flaps from the right
toward the left for both
sides.
8. Repeat step 1 to 5 for
both side.

Finishing the formation of the petals
1. Like turning the
pages of a book,
pivot one flap of the
paper from the right

back and do the same
thing. You will end up

a pencil to curl
them and form the

the right toward the
left for both sides.

Material needed
You will only need one square sheet of paper, colored origami paper is preferred.
Preparing the paper
1. Fold the sheet of paper in half from
top to bottom.
2. Fold the paper in half from left to
right.
3. Unfold the paper; the creases should
look similar to the illustration below.
5. Fold the outside corners of the paper
again so that the points all meet in
the center of the sheet.

4. Fold the four corners of the paper so
that the points all meet in the center
of the sheet.

6. Flip the paper model over so that the
folds are now on the bottom.
7. Fold the outside corners of the paper
again so that the points all meet in
the center of the sheet.

Making the petals for the water lily
1. Slightly unfold the top two flaps of
the paper.

2. Lift and pull out the flap from the
bottom side.

3. Pull the two corners of the flaps back
together.

4. Turn the model turn to the next
corner.

5. Repeats steps 1 through 3 for the
three remaining corners. The model
should look like the illustration
below.

Making the secondary petals
1. Flip the model over.
2. Open the four flaps without
unfolding them.

3. Gently fold each flap over so that the
corner is between each of the petals.
4. Flip the model back over and you
have now created a water lily.

First Folding Process
1.
Fold the paper diagonally.

Unfold the paper again. The paper
should now look like the one below.

Fold a corner toward the middle of
the square.

Repeat step 5 for all of the corners.
Once all of the corners are folded,
the model should look like the
picture below.

Second Folding Process
1. Fold a corner into the middle once
more. Repeat for all four corners.

Fold all four of the corners to the
middle again as in previous steps.

Flip the model to the backside.
5.
Fold a corner to the middle as
illustrated below, repeat this process
for all corners. The model should
now resemble the illustration below.

Unfold two of the adjacent corners that were previously folded in step 5.

Making the Petals of the Flower
1. On the side that was just unfolded, pull the corner from behind. Be sure to leave the
corner up that was just pulled up in step 6 of the Second Folding Process.

2. Now fold back ONLY the corners that were unfolded in step 1.

3. Continue Steps 2 a total of 4 times until your model resembles the one below

4. Be sure the flower is facing up. Reach behind and pull the corner out from behind.

5. Continue step 4 a total of 4 times and it should now resemble the model picture below

6. Use your thumb and index finger to pinch and hold only the yellow part of the flower
as you pull up the petal
