ROCKY and ANSYS
Working Together to Create Better Simulation Models
Moving the Limits Forward for Bulk Material
Handling Equipment Design and Analysis
Structural Analysis & Design
Today, major goals of the worlds mining companies include
reducing operating costs, optimizing processes, and improving
the reliability of equipment. One of the most effective ways to
achieve these goals is to integrate powerful simulation tools,
such as ANSYS and ROCKY, into the equipment design process.
A flexible, hierarchical interface makes coupling ROCKY with
ANSYS simple to set up and carry out. This newest release
includes a 2-way transferring feature of loading data that is
compatible with most ANSYS products, including ANSYS/
Mechanical and ANSYS/LS-Dyna. For engineers using other
FEM products, loading data can be imported to or exported
from the most popular codes. On the Computational Fluid
Dynamics (CFD) side, ROCKY still includes 1-way coupling with
ANSYS/Fluent, enabling the particle forces data from ROCKY
to be analyzed by ANSYS.

ANSYS and ROCKY Coupled Analysis
ANSYS has the industrys strongest multiphysics portfolio. As
a result, engineers can leverage systems-level analysis to make
intelligent trade-offs in a low-risk, cost-effective virtual design
environment. ANSYS provides a complete set of elements
behavior, material models, and equation solvers for a wide range
of engineering problems. From structural analysis to fluid flow,
thermal evaluations to coupled-physics capabilities, ANSYS has
the calculations acoustic, piezoelectric, thermal-structural,
fluid-structural, magnetic-structural and thermoelectric, to
name a few to analyze nearly any structure.
ROCKY is used to evaluate the particle flow within bulk
material handling systems. It has a powerful 3D Discrete
Element Modeling (DEM) solver developed jointly by ESSS
(Engineering Simulation Scientific Software Ltda.) and GDI
(Granular Dynamics International, LLC.) capable of quickly and
accurately simulating multi-shaped particle behavior within
a conveyor chute, mill, or nearly any other material handling
equipment imaginable.

WHY CHOOSE ROCKY?
Mining and manufacturing organizations all over the world
are choosing ROCKY to evaluate their bulk material handling
systems because ROCKY is:
Fatigue & Wearing
FAST & ACCURATE: Using streamlined calculations and
double precision processing, on both CPU and GPU processors,
ROCKY provides you with accurate results quicker than ever
before. Given that each particle is calculated as one item, as
compared to sphere clumps which are calculated as many
individual spheres stuck together, it takes less time to calculate
a ROCKY simulation, reducing the overall processing time
dramatically.
EASY TO USE: A flexible, hierarchical interface, customizable
parameters, and programmable scripts and macros make
ROCKY simulations simple to set up, run, and iterate upon.
ROCKY can also easily import CAD geometries and export
data to the most popular Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
programs available in the market, including direct integration
with the ANSYS/Structural, ANSYS/Mechanical and ANSYS/
LS-Dyna packages.

AFFORDABLE: ROCKY is priced competitively and gives you
the highest performing DEM functionality for the investment.
CUSTOMIZABLE: If out-of-the-box ROCKY does not meet
your organizations unique needs, ESSS developers can tailor
the ROCKY code to match your specific requirements.
REALISTIC: ROCKY simulates more than 5 million particles
in nearly limitless shapes and size distributions. Shapes like
faceted polyhedrons, briquettes, and cylinders compact, settle,
and behave just like real-world particles. Coupled with variable
wet, dry, and dust-like properties, ROCKY is capable of giving
you more realistic results.
