Manila is politically divided into 897 barangays, the smallest unit of local government in the
Philippines. Each barangay has its own chairperson and councilors. For administrative
convenience, all the barangays in Manila are grouped into 100 zones. These zones have no form of
local government. The city itself is composed of 16 former towns and municipalities absorbed by
the city in the 19th century. These places are further grouped into six Legislative Districts.

The city is a major center for banking and finance, retailing, transportation, tourism, real estate, as
well as traditional media, advertising, legal services, accountancy, insurance, theater, fashion, and
the arts in the Philippines.

Tourism

Intramuros - a historic fortified complex that is home to the city's oldest structures, such
as San Agustin Church, Fort Santiago, and theManila Cathedral.

Fort Santiago - a Spanish citadel located at the mouth of the Pasig River near Intramuros.

Manila Cathedral - a 19th-century ecclesiastical building in Intramuros and seat of


the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila.

San Agustin Church - a World Heritage Site in Intramuros and the Philippines' oldest
church.

Rizal Monument - Memorial to the Philippine national hero, Jos Rizal, located at the
center of Rizal Park (Luneta).

National Museum of the Philippines - home of the National Art Gallery.

Museum of the Filipino People - Anthropology and Archaeology museum.

Metropolitan Museum of Manila - a premier museum of modern and contemporary visual


arts.

Manila Zoo - the oldest zoo and botanical garden in the Philippines.

Ermita - located outside the walls of Intramuros near Luneta, this district is home to major
government buildings and many hotels.

Malate - the tourism center of Manila famous for Baywalk and the Remedios nightlife
district.

Binondo - an old district of Manila that is home to Manila Chinatown established since
1521. Its main attractions are Binondo Church, Filipino-Chinese Friendship Arch, and Seng
Guan Buddhist temple.

Paco Park - a recreational garden that was once a Spanish cemetery located
in Paco district.

Malacaan Palace - the official residence of the President of the Philippines.

San Sebastian Church - the only all-steel Gothic basilica in Asia.

University of Santo Tomas - the oldest university in Asia.

Plaza Miranda - the main public square of Quiapo district.

Manila Ocean Park - an oceanarium with a marine-themed mall and hotel.

Far Eastern University - a university with well-preserved and largest ensemble of ArtDeco Style Buildings. Unesco bestowed it as Honourable Mention.

Major Shopping Mall
These super-regional supermalls each have over a hundred local and international stores and are
anchored by at least one department store and supermarket or hypermarket. They are also the
largest malls in Metro Manila which feature not just stores but also attractions: movie theaters,
rides, skating rinks, bowling alleys and other recreational facilities. Each provides thousands of
automobile parking spaces and are located mostly near Train stations and established business
districts within the metropolis. These malls serve not only the Metro Manila and Greater Manila
Area residents, but also local and foreign tourists.

Community or regional shopping centers in Metro Manila are built around one
department store or supermarket and are enclosed. These shopping centers are located
mostly in suburban residential areas of the metropolis and typically cater to the basic
