In 1949, Ludovico Mares designed and

manufactured his rst masks and spearguns
with one purpose in mind: to share his

Mares was founded in 1949 by former

Istrian diver Ludovico Mares, who served in
the Austrian State Navy during World War I.
Mares quickly became a small industrial
company with a continuous increase in sales
and never an absence of ideas for new and
improved products. As the passion for diving
grew around the world in the late 60s, the
company expanded into the European diving
and snorkeling market. Between 1978 and
1982, Mares earned an undisputed place
as the global market leader in ns: today
nearly all diving and snorkeling ns are
produced using plastic materials, according
to the manufacturing process invented by
Mares. The company also rose quickly to
the top of the regulator market, becoming
an uncontested leader there as well. Today,
Mares has a presence in over 80 countries
around the world and is internationally
recognized as the leading company in the
manufacturing of diving products featuring

With Mares regulators all you need to do is...

The DFC system guarantees a stable ow of air even under

extreme conditions, and the Tri-material high pressure valve
offers superior reliability. Another important feature is the widelytested VAD system which reduces the effort needed to inhale,
while the Mesh Grid system prevents free-ow in the presence of
strong currents, without requiring additional adjustments.

The ideal solution to meet both requirements is wrapped up

in the new Carbon 42 regulator. Natural breathing: carbon
second stages (as well as the all-metal stages) prevents
the dry mouth effect by capitalizing the humidity inside the
second stage as you inhale. The incredibly light Superex
hose makes the Carbon second stage perfectly balanced in
the water, preventing jaw fatigue even during very long dives.
If you dive in extremely cold water, for instance under the polar
ice, the new Abyss 22 Navy is the right choice for this extreme
environment.

Thanks to years of experience in the design and manufacturing

of diving equipment, Mares regulators offer the most innovative
and advanced technology available to provide top quality.
When you choose a regulator, there are a number of different
issues you need to consider. For instance the type of dive: if you
travel frequently to exotic locations, you need a small, lightweight
regulator, so using a technopolymer regulator is the ideal
solution. On the other hand, if you dive in cold water, its crucial to
use a regulator made of a material with high thermal conductivity,
like metal.

When choosing a regulator, the key word is reliability.

REGULATORS

SUPERFLEX HOSE Mares developed the new Superex

hose after many years of testing and research. The results
achieved far surpass the tests required by EN250, and even
the highly stringent additional tests Mares applies for use in
extreme conditions. Its extreme light weight and exceptional
softness guarantee the maximum freedom of movement.

FLUID DYNAMIC DEFLECTOR This innovative deector,

developed after in-depth studies and tests of uid dynamics, is
engineered to receive and properly direct the airow from the
bypass tube to the mouthpiece. Combined with the VAD system
it delivers very natural and effortless breathing.

MESH GRID The patented mesh design of the second stage

cover reduces the pressure of water owing onto the second
stage diaphragm and minimizes free-ow. Even in strong
currents it eliminates the need for a knob to de-tune your
air delivery system to stop free owing: advanced technology
through basic physics.

VAD - VORTEX ASSISTED DESIGN All Mares second stages

offer the unique patented VAD system. The air bypass tube
conveys air to the mouthpiece creating a swirling vortex with a
low pressure area in the center that keeps the diaphragm down
during inhalation, for very sensitive and easy breathing at all
depths.

ALL METAL TECHNOLOGY Metal second stages have

superior performance to plastic second stages, especially in
cold water, thanks to the high thermal conductivity that limits the
freezing effect. Additional benets are the improved durability,
the longer working life and less dry mouth from breathing.

CARBON TECHNOLOGY Advanced technology and

light weight. The exceptional mechanical resistance and
extraordinary light weight make the carbon material perfect for
meeting the needs of the most demanding divers, for all uses
and any requirement. In addition, the high thermal conductivity
guarantees natural breathing, reducing troublesome dry mouth.

EXTREME COLD WATER Regulators made to guarantee

unbeatable performance and reliability in extremely cold water,
even ice diving: the rst stage is equipped with the CWD kit and
all key components of the second stage (All Metal version only)
are coated with uoropolymer resin nish.

DFC - DYNAMIC FLOW CONTROL The DFC system minimizes

the intermediate pressure drop during inhalation, making it possible
to use a simpler and more reliable second stage. No type of manual
adjustment is necessary, thanks to the consistency derived from a
rst stage that guarantees a stable ow of air, even under extreme
conditions.

TRI-MATERIAL VALVE Patented technology, created to

optimize performance, safety and reliability. This valve is covered
with hard PU and the sealing surface is layered with a soft PU
for a perfect seal. Tri-material (brass, soft polyurethane and
heavy-duty polyurethane) reaches a new level of durability.

its no longer a problem! Air Control, the new
alternative air source from Mares offers the
option to use the same hose for the octopus
and the inator. The pre-oriented mouthpiece
makes it usable like a quick and easy octopus.
The cover features the Mesh Grid system,

the new Mares mouthpiece! The new LS
mouthpiece incorporates two different
hardnesses of silicone molded into one
mouthpiece. Different thicknesses of bites
and perfect positioning of hollow semispheres to ensure incredible comfort and
fit for extremely low jaw fatigue without
gum irritation, even during very long dives.
Lateral channels give the flexibility for
a better fit into the particular morphology
of the mouth. The profile of special bridges
allows an easy and natural breathing pattern
while not requiring any effort to hold the
mouthpiece in place. The spheres, at the
top and bottom stimulate the lips, relaxing
them while making them assume the ideal

With Mares instruments all you need to do is...

The Mares computer line includes many other products, such

as the Nemo Excel for those who prefer a small wrist unit which
can also be worn as a regular watch, out of the water. The Nemo
Wide, with its huge display and enormous viewing angle, has a
4-button operation, ergonomic design and upgradable software.
For maximum simplicity, the Puck and its one-button operation
offers a complete dive computer that is incredibly easy to use.
For those who prefer gas integrated computers, Puck Air and
Nemo Air show tank pressure, time remaining based on gas
consumption, and surface breathing rate in l/min (cu.ft./min).

As all other Mares dive computers, the Icon HD utilizes the MaresWienke algorithm with deep stops, but it does not end here. A
digital compass with bearing function, an improved map function
for viewing a high denition image of the dive site during the
dive, and a logbook with a graphical dive prole representation
are just few of the many unique features of Icon HD computer.
For the map function, there are more than 100 available as a free
download from our website, www.mares.com.

The Icon HD comes with a reprogrammable processor,

which allows it to be constantly up- to-date with the latest
developments. In the rst year there were several upgrades
added to the Icon HD, some with minor functional improvements,
whereas others added more languages.

The color display (QVGA 320x240 pixel) shows dive information

both numerically and graphically. Colors are used to identify key
situations and to differentiate elds such as depth, no stop time,
dive time, ascent rate and much more! The graphic mode depicts
the actual dive prole in real time.

The clarity and availability of the immediate information display

is just one of the few cardinal points around which the Icon HD
has been developed. Only by using a TFT (Thin Film Transistor)
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) can we achieve our goal.

The apex of this development is the Icon HD. The 4 buttons, the
mineral glass screen, the software inspired by the EASY ACCESS
philosophy and, last but not least, the high denition color
display make the Icon HD extremely efcient and easy to use.

Over the past few years, Mares has turned the dive computer
from an exclusive instrument to an easy-to-use companion for
every dive. Since the early 90s, our computers have evolved
but have remained true to our main philosophy: safe, reliable,
and user friendly, both in operating the unit and reading the
information.

RGBM The Mares-Wienke Reduced Gradient Bubbles Model

algorithm is the most advanced algorithm to date for preventing
the formation of micro bubbles. Obtained from a study done by
Dr.Bruce Wienke in the Los Alamos labs on over 10,000 real dives,
the RGBM algorithm incorporates a Deep Stop function to further
increases safety without compromising dive time.

EASY ACCESS The Easy Access push buttons allow divers

to operate the computer in all conditions, even when wearing
thick gloves. Navigating through the computer programs is
extremely simple and very intuitive, whether the computer is
equipped with one, two, three or four push buttons.

PRECAUTIONARY PROGRAM SETTINGS All Mares

computers can be set to a more conservative decompression
algorithm. For instance if you plan to dive in very cold waters,
you may want to follow a more conservative prole to account for
the additional physiological stress on your body.

SPECIAL FUNCTION MODE Mares computers provide

specialized program functions dedicated to the individual needs
of divers. Air - Nitrox - Freedive - Bottom-timer.

AIR INTEGRATED Computerized monitoring of tank

pressure is used to determine a bottom time which depends not
only on your depth, but also on your actual gas consumption,
increasing your safety. In addition, the gas consumption
(referred to the surface) is displayed on the computer for more
control over your dive.

MINERAL GLASS DISPLAY Most Mares computers are

equipped with mineral glass displays. This provides superior
scratch resistance, similar to the mineral glass used by watch
manufacturers. The mineral glass is shockproof, tempered, and
non-reective for better readability in all diving conditions and
visibility levels.

SUPERIOR DISPLAY READABILITY In order to offer

easy-to-read instruments in every circumstance, Mares features
wide computer displays with oversized digits, intense backlighting
and high contrast displays. Special attention is paid to maximize the
viewing angle, to eliminate angular distortion and to always grant the
best readability.

up in case of ascent or descent, indicative of

logo, are not only light and easy to pack, they primarily feature a
cut dedicated to the female body, for unprecedented comfort while

A prominent feature in the Mares BC line is the Airtrim system,

which replaces both the standard exhaust valves and the inator,
combining them into one pneumatically-controlled device. Thanks
to the patented Twin Exhaust Valve, all you need are two buttons,
ergonomically placed on the BC to control buoyancy, trim, ascent
and descent!

For those who demand weight integrated BCs, we offer the MRS+
system with its unique one-step emergency release. However, we
also offer a wide range of BCs designed specically for those who
would rather dive with a traditional weight belt. Certain models

Consider the aircells: standard wrap-around front adjustable,

back-mounted, or the unique hybrid, which combines the high

The new foldable backpack is now available on the new Hybrid

Man and She Dives and is the best expression of this philosophy.
Made with two different materials, the stronger being in the main
structure to ensure maximum strength where tension is greatest,
and the softer in the areas where the tank rests to ensure a
maximum grip and hold of the tank. A honeycomb structure
makes it incredibly strong while 40% lighter than a traditional
backpack. When folded, it takes up 30% less space than a
traditional backpack.

in contact with the tank, when open it ensures the unparalleled
stability and comfort of a long backpack, but when folded its 30%
shorter than a traditional backpack. The honeycomb structure
makes it 40% lighter than a traditional backpack.

MRS PLUS Optimal ballast with a mechanical release

system. A simple click ensures easy and secure storage of the
weight pockets. A single outward pull on the oversized handle
releases the weights. Maximum load 6kg/13lbs. Velcro interior
divides the pocket into multiple sections (M, L, XL).

TRIM WEIGHT Two pockets in the back of the BC meant for

non-ditchable weights which provide a better trim. Each pocket
holds 2.5kg/5.5lbs, and is secured with a quick release buckle
plus velcro.

BACKMOUNTED The ination bladder is entirely in the

rear of the BC enabling high lift capacity while reducing bulk in
the front area for an unrestricted feeling and maximum freedom
of movement. Mares backmounted BCs are full-featured and

HIGH LIFT This design characteristic means high lift

capacity across all sizes compared to traditional bladder

The offer is complete with the new Thermo Guard and Rash

All suits, regardless of category, feature numerous innovative

ideas, such as the new custom closure, zipper pulls with
integrated whistle, and not to mention the additional neoprene
padding (Back Protection System) in the Flexa suits and the spine
support (Spine Pad) of the 2ndSkin suit.

Mares wetsuits, both mens and She Dives, are grouped in three
main categories: Extreme, Elite, and Prime. Suits in the Extreme
family are designed to maximize thermal protection for dives in
very cold water (2ndSkin, Antarctica, Isotherm). Suits in the Elite
family are characterized by the exclusive use of ultrastretch
neoprene (Flexa models). Suits in the Prime family are more
traditional suits, either as 3 or 5mm steamers, or as farmer john
and separate vest (Pioneer, Dual, Reef). Even in the Prime suits
you will nd the trilastic philosophy with ultrastretch inserts
where it matters most.

A concept successfully introduced with last years mens line is

the color coding on the shoulder which represents the water
temperature for which the suit is intended. Dark grey identies
suits with a thickness greater than 5mm, intended for cold
water. Fog blue (red in the mens line) identies suits with 5mm
thicknesses, intended for temperate water. White identies suits
3mm or less in thickness, intended for warm water dives.

We continue to believe in the Trilastic principle, and we now

apply it to the She Dives line. Trilastic is the application of varying
material thicknesses to the various parts of the wetsuit in order
to obtain the optimum mix of thermal protection, comfort and
mobility. Trilastic also means combining different materials,
internally and externally, for maximum insulation.

Mares persistent desire to constantly improve was rewarded, in

February 2010, with the Tauchen Award in the wetsuit category.
The Tauchen Awards are given out during the Boot Show in
Duesseldorf, Germany, every year and represent the most
prestigious award a manufacturer can hope for.

The new She Dives line, expected from Mares, is the result of indepth studies on materials, extensive testing, but also introduces
a tailored approach to pattern making and sizing. And, as
always, extreme care is devoted to the most minute details.

With the introduction of the new She Dives wet suit line, Mares
completes the renovation process which began last year with the
mens wetsuit line.

DOUBLE SEALING SYSTEM Advanced construction

utilizing an internal gasket seal for the least water movement.
The combined action of the internal neoprene O-ring with the skin
seal creates this double barrier called Double Sealing System. Two
technologies together to minimize the water ow through the wrists.

TITEX ZIPS Both Mares Isotherm and 2ndSkin use a TIZIP

high strength zipper. Isotherm uses a horizontal version, the
SuperSeal, which is the perfect zipper for semi dry diving suits.
The 2ndSkin uses the SilverSeal which is extremely strong and
forgiving when installed upright in the back of steamers. For best
performance, it is recommended that both be lubricated regularly.

SUPRATEX KNEE PAD Knee protection made of antiscratch polyurethane not only looks sharp, but is engineered for
high strength and protection without compromising exibility.
The linear design moves in line with your body while still
guarding this high wear area.

CUSTOM CLOSURE This neck closure system allows for

the easy customization of neck ttings. Beginning this year, Mares
provides a complete new style of velcro tag molded in rubber, to
minimize snagging of the plush or neoprene. Back and front zips
with skin-on-skin zipper seals for a superior water barrier.

COMFORT PLUSH This internal plush fabric has a

low heat conductivity thus retaining warmth and providing a
comfortable feeling. Moreover, its loop nish gives a softer feel
against the skin. Both Thermo and Comfort Plush are easy to
identify on a Mares suit, thanks to the use of red color that shows
the different fabrics inside the suit.

DOUBLE CONE The Double Cone System (with or without

zips) minimizes the water ow in the most critical sealing areas
like wrists and ankles. First, fold the glide part of the inner cone
against your skin. Second, overlap a glove with the glide surface
of the upper cone, thus providing an incomparable seal.

SPINE PAD The Spine Pad is an additional layer of thick

neoprene that is stitched under the back zipper of a steamer. This
additional layer provides double benets. Its smooth external
skin perfectly adheres with the inner part of the zipper, thereby
obtaining an exceptional seal. Its thickness provides much more
comfort during diving, reducing the uncomfortable feeling of the
tank on the back.

BACK PROTECTION SYSTEM The Back Protection

System takes inspiration from our BC knowledge. We thought to
add a wide additional neoprene layer in the lumbar region. Benets
are multiple, specically by adding extra warmth in a zone that is
usually cold sensitive. Extra protection for better comfort when
diving and also less empty spaces for disturbing water sacks.

GLIDESKIN With seals at the neck, wrist and ankles,

GlideSkin uses a special nish that provides a wide range of
benets. Extremely slippery: it makes the suit easy to put on
and remove, while maintaining a great seal against the skin.
Warmth: low heat conduction makes the suit warmer. Easy to
maintain: excellent dirt and water repellent qualities. Available
in graphite, sapphire and metal.

THERMO PLUSH This internal fabric dedicated to the inside

panel of suits is soft, smooth, durable and developed to increase
free movement. Ideal to guarantee extreme mobility, its rened
nish prevents the suit from retaining water with the double

for both the mens line and the She Dives line.
The Thermo Guard Shorty is also available
in Junior sizes. The shorty is excellent for
swimming pool use, snorkelling, or under
the wetsuit for that little extra warmth. Also,
the internal lining in metalite helps retain
more body warmth. The Thermo Guard is also
excellent as protection from powerful UV rays
preventing over exposure to the sun.

Even though the thickness is only 0.5mm,

Coral is a very warm suit. The internal fabric
called Metalite has a heat retaining effect. This
means that the body heat is reected thus less
heat is lost. Also ideal as a back-up suit or it

rubber lined with neoprene for added comfort, and featuring a
4mm anti-slip sole. The rear heel notches keep your fin strap
from slipping, and allow you to step on the notch keeping the boot
in place while removing your foot during doffing.

FRONT ZIPPERS The design of a front zip closure allows

for self-entry and greater freedom of movement by not having
a stiff zipper across your back. An external zipper flap further
protects this crucial portion of your suit.

WEBTEX Intense research and development by Mobbys

to find materials that help increase warmth have led to the
development of Webtex. This material, a type of plush, not only
retains heat, but actually conducts more heat during your dive by
using your bodys natural friction inside the suit.

NEOPRENE COLLAR AND WRISTS Good sealing

along with insulating properties. Neoprene Collar and Wrists
are more durable with easy maintenance, eliminating the need

KNEE PROTECTION The polyurethane protections are

JUST ADD WATER.

All that is left to do is to discover the range of ns Mares has to

offer and choose the ones that best t your wants and needs.

Fins are categorized by performance, kicking style, and tness/

training level. For the highest thrust, choose a n with a wide
blade and Channel Thrust technology, such as the Wave and the
Excel +. For optimum thrust and the least amount of effort, choose
a n with OPB (Optimized Pivoting Blade), such as the Volo Power
or Volo Race.

The X-stream is the apex of a very complete line of ns including

open heel models, to be used with booties, and full foot models
ideal for travelling to warm waters.

One limitation of traditional foot pockets is the so called parachute

effect: while kicking, water enters in the gaps between the foot
and the foot pocket itself and then has nowhere to go. The foot
pocket on the X-stream has a multitude of openings in the foot
pocket itself to allow the water which has entered the foot pocket,
to exit without offering resistance to movement. Normally, such
a multitude of holes would weaken the foot pocket to the point
that the n becomes unusable, but in the X-stream n there is a
reinforcement in an X-shape pattern across the foot pocket, which
is made of strong elastic material, so the energy transfer from
foot to n is ensured. The remainder of the foot pocket is made of
soft material so that comfort is guaranteed.

The X-stream weighs 30% less than a pair of traditional ns. Much
of the credit of the red dot award can be found in the engineering
of the foot pocket.

Channel Trust technology, OPB (Optimized Pivoting Blade), ABS

plus buckles, the use of 3 materials of different properties applied
where each can give the perfect blend of performance, comfort,
and are also light weight. All the innovations that over the years
have conrmed Mares as the world leader in ns are now found in
one single product. The X-stream combines two features usually
found at opposites: light weight and performance.

In 2010 more than 1600 companies from 57 different countries

applied for the prestigious red dot design award, but only a few

is the Superchannel. The blade is designed with a large exible
central Superchannel, propelling water-ow more efciently
down the n blade instead of letting it spill over the sides for

CHANNEL THRUST Mares design is inspired by marine

mammals. Channel Thrust technology maximizes the channeling of
water and moves a much greater amount of water compared to other
ns of the same size. The result is greater thrusting power with the
same amount of effort.

ELASTIC OPB A combination of materials and geometry

designed to achieve an OPB without apparent hinge points, the
Elastic OPB causes the blade to ex at an optimal angle during
the upward and downward strokes increasing the efciency of
your kicks. All effort is translated into a positive, easy thrust.

OPB - OPTIMIZED PIVOTING BLADE Allows the blade to

maintain an optimal angle throughout the kicking cycle, whereas
traditional ns achieve this only during a small portion of the
cycle. OPB produces a constant thrust, which minimizes fatigue
and produces uid movement through the water.

RIDDLED FOOT POCKET The limiting factors in

traditional open heel foot pockets are their weight and the
parachute effect. When nning, water gets into the space
between the bootie and the foot pocket, creating drag like
the air in a parachute. The perforations prevent this and have
the additional benet of making the foot pocket very soft and
exible. Furthermore, the suction effect which can make dofng

In addition to the High-Tech masks, the 2011 catalog is enriched

by several Aquazone models, the snorkeling division of Mares.
All Aquazone masks are made of high quality silicone and are
equipped with the new buckles activated by soft silicone buttons.
Because of the grade of silicone used in these masks, they are
perfect for scuba diving as well.

In 2011 we are proud to introduce another member to the

LiquidSkin family. The i3, a 3-window mask with an incredible
field of view. Both the new i3 and the X-vu LiquidSkin mount the
new streamlined buckles and our innovative Bi-silicone strap.
The X-shaped area of the strap that is in contact with the back
of the head ensures perfect position of the mask throughout the
dive. Its new 2-color LiquidSkin look makes it unmistakeably
Mares.

The most important innovation since the introduction of silicone

masks is Bi-silicone Technology. In all of the current masks on
the market, the skirt is made of rubber, silicone, or another
medium-hard elastomer. All of todays masks are a compromise
between the need of a hard material to provide support to
the frame and lenses and that of a soft material to adapt to
the contours of the face and provide a good fit. Until today,
manufacturers have been forced to look for compromiseable
solutions, since the skirt was made of a single material. Mares
Bi-Silicone technology LiquidSkin greatly surpasses the current
single material skirt technology. LiquidSkin incorporates
two different types of silicone into one molded skirt: a firmer
portion for support and a softer portion for contact with your
face. The support structure and the area of the seals around the
lenses are molded with a silicone that is 30% harder than in any
traditional mask. The section that rests on your face is made
with silicone that is 45% softer and 270% more elastic. As a
result, the mask is stronger and more stable than any traditional
mask, yet unbelievably comfortable and with a superior fit. In
addition, the marks that are typically left on your face after a dive
are mostly eliminated. The superior elasticity and softness of
LiquidSkin allows the mask to fit perfectly on a wider range of
faces. LiquidSkin adapts to facial movement and offers a great
seal, virtually eliminating water leakage. Equalization is easier
due to the super soft nose pocket; its like pinching your own
nose. Its lightweight and soft adherence to the face is so gentle
that you forget you are wearing it.

BUCKLES ON SKIRT By attaching the buckles to the

BUSINESS CARE DESIGN Several bags in the new Cruise

collection come with a business-dedicated area. The Cruise
Journey and Cruise Ofce are reinforced and padded to properly
protect your laptop, logbook, MP3, mobile phone, agenda, pens
and all your other business tools.

HEAVY DUTY CONSTRUCTION All Cruise bags are

reinforced with stainless steel rivets and screws providing
extra durability and extra protection. Components are heavy
duty, stitched and attached with stainless steel rivets between
the hard components (bottom, case, telescopic handle) and the
material, all to increase durability.

DETACHABLE POCKET An extremely useful additional

bag, the small beauty case is ideal for travel or during a tour and
includes a mirror. The Cruise Roller comes with a detachable
pocket ideal to store the small things we always want to bring
with us even when we go diving.

SPIRAL ZIPPERS All Mares bags come with spiral

zippers. These zips make it very easy to open and close the
pockets no matter which direction they are facing.

PROTECTIVE COVER Keeps your bag clean. A fashionable

black cover with a big Mares logo printed on top will protect the
bag during the longest voyage. The nylon cover will protect your
bag from rain, dust, stains and scratches. A hole on top of the
cover allows use of the telescopic handle when covered.

HARD BOTTOM All the biggest bags of the new Cruise

collection are reinforced with a hard bottom. The hard bottom makes
the bag more stable and tear resistant, as well as the storage space
much stronger with better protection. The hard bottom makes the
attachment of the wheels and the telescopic handle much more
durable resulting in a tremendously strong bag.

TELESCOPIC HANDLE Mares biggest bags are ideal for

long trips and are equipped with a telescopic handle. Hidden into
a pocket placed on the top of the bag, when needed the handle
can be extended making it very easy to pull and maneuver, even
when lled with diving equipment.

BACKPACK SYSTEM With little effort a large piece of

luggage can be transformed into a comfortable Backpack. A big
pocket positioned under the bags case contains two big and soft
shoulder straps. In the case of the Mares X-strap system, the
traditional handles are converted into should straps by attaching
them to special metal snap hooks. The backpack solution with
adjustable sternal straps is ready to use in the Deluxe and Elite
versions.

HEAVY DUTY WHEELS All Mares bags include rugged

and durable construction wheels. They can maneuver over
streets, through airports and to your dive with no problem. All
Mares bag wheels are attached with stainless steel screws. This
system makes the wheels much more durable than bags using
rivets.

is a revolution within itself. For the rst
time in dive history, Mares has developed
a line dedicated towards diving centers
and rental locations. We believe that using
rental equipment should never hinder ones

RICCARDO STURLA AVOGADRI

From the air to the water, this handful of words can sum up the life
of Riccardo Sturla Avogadri: 39 years old, Airbus pilot, dive instructor,
sailing enthusiast, and founder of the Shark Academy.
The Shark Academy is the product of the irrepressible passion for
sharks that its founder has had since the age of 13, when his father
took him on a trip to Polynesia where he got his rst chance to swim
with sharks. Since that day, Riccardo has studied all species of sharks
and has perfected a technique that he uses to put them to sleep. He
patented this technique as something completely new, calling it relax
immobility. The study of this technique, along with his lion-hearted
courage, has led him to dive without protection even with white, tiger,
and bull sharks.
Over the years, he has gathered thousands of collectors items from
around the world that have been displayed in 30exhibitions across Italy.
He has also made his dreams a reality, bringing together all shark fans
with the Shark Academy (www.sharkacademy.it), and founding in Jesolo
Lido, Italy, the rst museum/research center in the world with 60 sharks
of 25 different species, where visitors can dive with him among the
sharks (Shark Expo).
In 2008, he published his book Understanding Sharks, which is used as
the text for the Shark Awareness specialization used by leading scuba
instruction programs. In 2009, a number of species of sharks born in
captivity in the research center were released into protected marine
areas.
Mares has always been by his side in all of his undertakings.

For over 15 years, Gianluca Genoni has been actively dedicated to deep
freediving: he set 12 world records in the different disciplines of variable
ballast.
On August 17th 1996 in Siracusa, he set his rst world record in limited
variable ballast at -106m. Genoni became the undisputed king of this
discipline, beating his own records a good 10 times.
He set his latest world record in the waters of Sharm El Sheikh on
October 5th 2006 at -141m.
And not only limited variable ballast: Gianluca has also set two records
in absolute variable ballast:
- 1998 -135m
- 1999 -138m
In his book Emozioni... profonde (Deep...emotions), he recounts his
sporting achievements through a reective look at his life.
Since 2002, Gianluca has participated in scientic medical studies
related to freediving with the University of Varese and the CNR (Italian
National Research Council): Freediving below ice at extremely high
altitudes (3000m); Dives at sea level in a pool, achieving an apnea of
15 minutes 10 seconds; Dive at 5200m in Upper Pyramid Lake, at the
foot of Mount Everest. This deeply felt passion has propelled Gianluca
into teaching. He has created his own materials and helps spread the
practice of safe freediving with courses and internships around the
world. On November 26th 2008, Gianluca Genoni put himself through
a scientic-medical test in cooperation with DAN, obtaining the world
record in static apnea with oxygen of 1803. This record is the result of
a set of medical scientic tests related with the physiological research
of vital parameters after an extended apnea. The reason why Genoni
is going through these tests is to help DAN Europe researchers to
identify some mechanisms from the human body not yet known. For 13
years, Gianluca Genoni has been a Mares Testimonial and an incredibly
important gure for consulting and testing in developing equipment
dedicated to freediving at the highest levels.
