Weekly Lesson on Opposites for MEP3

This weekly assessment document summarizes a kindergarten class' activities from January 26-30, 2015. The class reviewed opposites from the previous week through circle time activities. They practiced phonics by saying words containing the letter "e", and played writing and matching games to reinforce phonics. Students also made an opposites display, completed worksheets matching opposites, and played games like charades to review vocabulary. New letters, sounds and sight words were introduced, and writing practice focused on capital letters.

This week we learned:

Circle Time Review
1

This week in circle time we continued to

study opposites. We practiced the focus
sentences from last week, asking the class
what is the opposite of...? And we also
listened to the opposite song again but when
I paused it the students froze and had to give
me the opposite on what was on the TV
screen. This was a fun way to review the
vocabulary. We discussed the e sound
from phonics and the children had great fun

attempting to say e, e, energetic egg

aloud.

Activity Time

Evaluation: The children really tried

hard with the pronunciation of the new

four letter e words this week. They
listened carefully to the way I said the
words and then copied. The words vet
and web were the hardest for them.
We went over the last letter sound and
emphasised it so that it wasnt missed.
A writing game from the phonics world
book was played this week which
involved a small group of children
spelling out one of the key words for
the board writer. The child at the board
then wrote the word as they thought it
was spelt. This helped all children look
to see if the word had been written
correctly and if it was incorrect, they
were then all suggesting alternative
letters to use using the flashcards to
help.
All the children played line-up game
which encouraged them to identify the
card that they were holding and then
ensure that they were positioned in the
right place within the line according to
what had been called out.

Activities and worksheets:

This week we made an opposites wall display using several of the key opposites we have
learned. We did a worksheet where the students had to read opposites and then to draw a
picture next to it to show its meaning. Another good way to learn and ts for understanding
Sentence structure:
The opposite of hot is cold.
What is the opposite of big? The opposite of big is small.
Games:
We played splat using flashcards and the clap-clap game to learn the opposites
vocabulary. We also played charades where the students acted out a vocab word and the
rest of the class and to guess what it is and identify the opposite. This was a fun way to
cover vocabulary.
Videos/songs:
This week we watched the opposites song and I asked questions throughout.

tall, short, full, empty, high, low, wet, dry, near, far, new, old, easy, hard, dark, light, clean,
dirty.

Sight Words

Evaluation: The students continued to

practice writing in their worksheets this
week. We were looking for correct
shape, size and position of the letters.
We focused on capital letters this week
and learned when to use them. The
children practiced writing the letters n
and o this week. We talked about
correct positioning and the directions
on how to correctly form the letters. A
few still had a tendency to rush. Any
letters that were not written neatly were
then erased and reattempted.

Evaluation:
This weeks sightwords were: what, is, it. We
practiced using them over again in sentences.
