The European Funding Guide for

Researchers & Students in Japan

Winter 2011/2012

Disclaimer
The information presented in this booklet is purely for guidance and information purposes only.
While every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, it is the responsibility of the reader to check the
particular details for each scheme. In particular, readers are advised to be vigilant to changes in the
schedule for deadlines and calls.

The European Funding Guide for

Researchers & Students in Japan
Winter 2011/2012

Preface
On 29 March, 2011, the European Union-Japan Science and
Technology Agreement entered into force and science, technology
and innovation have become a priority area for EU-Japan
cooperation.
This booklet, which lists over 300 programmes from the EU,
its Member States and countries associated to the EU Research
Framework Programme, aims to help researchers locate grants
or funding in order to visit, collaborate and mutually learn from
each other. It provides basic information on funding schemes
and fellowships for mobility, exchange, or career development
between Europe and Japan at various career stages.
For each programme, the following information is presented:

An overview of each programme

Responsible organisation
Nationality requirements
Duration
Funding Levels
Call or Deadline
Link to further information

In addition to the European Commission Marie Curie, European Research Council, and Erasmus
Mundus schemes, the document also lists programmes from European and Japanese funding
organisations, and those offered by other foundations or research bodies. It should also be noted
that from 2014, the successor to the 7th Framework Programme will be Horizon 2020, a new
funding programme for research in the European Union. The budget for research will also increase
significantly.
This booklet was prepared by Dr. Lee Woolgar, Information Officer for EURAXESS Links Japan,
who received valuable advice and support from EU Member States and funding organisations in both
Europe and Japan. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their kind support in this
venture.
This booklet has also been translated into Japanese.
I hope that the information will encourage more cooperation and provide new opportunities for study,
research and collaboration both in and between Europe and Japan.
