Bob Dylan: The Recording Sessions
Bob Dylan: The Recording Sessions
Some general information regarding the different sources made available for
the study:
1. The Columbia Studios Recording Diaries are books, which for each day of the
year (since 1941) list every planned session in the different studios. Information
includes: time of the day, name of the studio, name of the producer and the
engineers and the name of the artist. For the New York studios one diary is
missing, that which covers the period January 1967 to December 1970. For the
Nashville studios, the diary for the period 1969 to 1971 is missing.
2. Recording Sheets are lists made during each session and put into each tape box.
The sheet records the date, the studio, the artist, which tracks were recorded and
the CO number (Columbia's own reference number) for each composition (of
which, more later). Each recorded take is marked as complete (C), with a short
false start(b) or a long false start (B). It is indicated on these sheet which takes are
removed to other tapes for further use.
3. The Tape Boxes themselves also usually contain information about each take and
which takes are removed for further use.
4. CO Cards contain information about the CO (CO=Columbia) number and title
for each composition and usually also the recording date. The CO numbers are
basically a secure identification of each composition but they are not always
chronological (for instance: the CO numbers for songs recorded in Nashville are
generally higher than CO numbers for songs recorded at the same time in New
York), and, confusingly, sometimes one composition has several CO numbers,
especially (but not always) if it has been recorded several times at different
sessions.
5. Columbia Artist Cards contain information about every recorded composition,
including recording date, CO number and release information (if the track was
indeed released).
Additional session-related papers made available for examination included musicians'
contracts, reports made by the producers and other material. This was generally available
from January 1, 1965 and onwards.
It is obvious that the material made available for examination is of extreme importance in
the efforts to establish the facts about Bob Dylan's many recording sessions. As a result,
it has been possible to clarify most of the details. In some instances there are
discrepancies in information from the different sources mentioned above, and this can
only be clarified by listening through the tapes for those sessions. The following
information is therefore not necessarily 100 per cent correct, but until all the tapes have
been heard, I'm confident that it's pretty close to being a definitive listing.
The format in which the information is given is strictly adhered to. For each session
(defined as an event with a job number in the studio diaries), a headline specifies the
location, date and planned time for the session. The names of the producer an engineers
are listed. Following this, each take recorded at the session is listed chronologically,
numbers from 1 onwards. The songs are listed with their official title, followed by the CO
number (only given for the first take of each song if many take are recorded). Then
comes the take number and the indication of whether the take is complete (C), with a
short false start(b) or a long false start(B).
The take numbers are not always logical. To identify the takes with any degree of
certainty, they should be numbers from 1 onwards. But in some instances, there are
missing or duplicate take numbers, for instance 1,2,3,6,7,7, 11. This is probably because
only stated takes (i.e. properly announced takes) are listed, in some cases at least, or
because they are listed as they are slated (and the person who slates the take sometimes
seems to have a bad memory as to where he's up to). In other cases, when a composition
is recorded several times at different sessions, the same CO number is used at all sessions
(which is logical because it identifies the composition). Sometimes the take numbers are
continuous from one session to the next, but at other times every session starts with take
1.
In the lists given, the take numbers are duplicated precisely from the recording sheets and
are therefore not always logical.
In the notes after the song listings, the following information is given: the actual time of
the session, if known; the titles of the composition given on the recording sheet if they
are not the official titles; the names of backing musicians and an indication of which
takes of which tracks were eventually released on the official albums. Release
information has been limited to the first release for each take; additional releases on other
albums have not been included.
In this first part, the Columbia sessions in New York in the 1960s are listed, starting with
Dylan's sideman job for Carolyn Hester in 1961.

Carolyn Hester (guitar & vocal), Bruce Langhorne (guitar & fiddle), William E. Lee
(bass) and Bob Dylan (harmonica).
3,4, a splice of 15 and 16, and 10 or 11 released on Carolyn Hester.
Bob Dylan signed with Columbia on October 26, 1961. It is not known
whether there was a formal audition before he signed the contract. Between September 29
and November 20 there is no John Hammond audition listed in the recording diary
(auditions are not listed with the artist's name) and therefore no evidence of a Bob Dylan
audition.
The recordings for Dylan's first album were done during two days, but under the same
job number.

is interesting for two reasons: It preceded the Bringing It All Back Home sessions,
where the solo versions of the songs done the first day were done with electric back-up
on the two following days. It's also the source of the CD-ROM misunderstanding about
the apparent recording of an electric version of House of the Risin' Sun as early as 1962
- long before The Animals' famous version. Of course, Dylan never did make any such
recording. Instead, an acoustic take of House of the Risin' Sun from his first album was
put together with three "electric" songs recorded in October/November 1962 for this
overdub session. The final result was four "electric" tracks with continuous CO-numbers.
At first glance at the tape boxes and the CO-numbers, it seemed logical to assume that the
electric House of the Risin' Sun had also been recorded in 1962, along with the other
three tracks that were given the overdub treatment. Only a careful study of the Artists
Contract Card sorts out the true origin of the basic tracks.

At the January 13 session Bob Dylan performed solo. For the next two days
he had a basic backing group, with whom he recorded during the afternoons. On the
evening of January 14 he made a number of recordings with a different backing group,
but none of these tracks was used for the album. Unfortunately the tapes and recording
sheets for this evening session were not available, so the list is based on information from
other sources, among them the artists' contract, which includes the name of John
Hammond Jr. Readers may recall that in the pages of The Telegraph, Hammond denied
having played on any such session but the documentation includes details of the fee he
received. Another small mystery waiting to be solved, then. Hopefully a full list of all
takes will be added later.

While Bob Dylan was in the UK, there was a Dylan session in New
York. If You Gotta Go, Go Now needed an overdub. There is no documentation of the
musicians involved, but it could have been the back-up singers, who are heard on this
song.

February 4, 1966, 7-10 pm and 11:30-2:30 am
Produced by Bob Johnston.
Engineers: Halee and Keyes.
Session cancelled.
So Bob Dylan's sessions in New York City in the 1960s ended with
a number of cancellations. From February 1966 until 1970, Dylan would record all his
material in Nashville, where a huge number of musicians were readily available. One
39
major argument for changing to Nashville may well have been technical. In 1966 the
New York studio was still using 4-track equipment. Most of Blonde On Blonde was
recorded in 8-track. which technology was available in Nashville.
The question I have been asked most often since I was permitted to examine the
Columbia Archives of Bob Dylan's recordings, is: How many takes did Dylan record of
Sad-Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands? This was one of the questions I had to find an
answer to, being back in the Sony Archives in Manhattan a few weeks ago. I knew that
going through Bob Dylan's recordings from Columbia's Nashville studios would be pretty
difficult. In the New York studios there was a tradition for keeping the records and files
complete and up to date, which made the material reasonably straightforward to work
with (This, however, does not mean that the article in the last issue of "The Telegraph"
was free from mistakes. I am sure everyone was surprised to discover that Dylan had
apparently recorded Last Thoughts On Woody Guthrie during the Another Side Of
Bob Dylan session and that Ballad In Plain D was apparently never recorded. As you
might have guessed, CO 82217 is actually Ballad In Plain D, which error I meant to
correct but, under pressure of deadlines, I forgot. There are a number of other mistakes
and clarifications, which will all be corrected in one addenum [sic] at the end of this
series of articles).
There are several problems connected to the period 1968-'71. The Recording Diaries for
1969-'71 for the Nashville Studios are missing, as well as for January 1967 to December
1970 for the New York studios. Therefore it is impossible to start with a list of jobs and
then track down the tapes and recording sheets.
For this reason, the sources to define each recording job vary in each case: The CO-cards
(small cards, one for each CO-number, usually with information about song title,
recording date and job number) are a valuable source, but contrary to what was routine in
New York - namely that each recorded song got a CO-number, no matter if it was
released or not - it was custom and practice in Nashville (and, indeed, it would become so
from 1970 in New York) only to give a CO-number to songs which were released or used
for further overdubbing etc. This means that sessions which didn't produce any released
songs, would not show up at all on the CO-cards.
The Columbia Artist Cards are not of much help either, because from 1968 and on they
only list songs which were released.
On the other hand, the musicians' contracts have been extremely helpful. They cover
every session where musicians were paid to play and very often give information about
the song titles which were recorded.
40
But being able to identify all the jobs does not put an end to the problems: Unfortunately,
it has turned out that many tapes are missing or not easy to locate. During my recent trip
to the Sony Archives I therefore spent most of the time trying to track down the different
session tapes from Nashville. This work has not been fully completed, so there are still
sessions that should have been listed here for which a full track list cannot yet be
presented. Hopefully, these holes will be filled up later.
Furthermore, in many cases the session tapes do not contain recording sheets; that means:
the tape is there, but noone [sic] knows what is on it. To solve this problem I was kindly
allowed to listen to these tapes. For technical reasons (the tapes were recorded in many
different formats, each requiring its own machine to play back) it was not possible to go
through all the tapes in question this time. Once again, if things go to plan, these
omissions will also be dealt with later.
In the last article I stated that most of Blonde On Blonde was recorded in 8-track in
Nashville. It now appears that this is probably not true. The first album for which there
are session tapes in 8-track is John Wesley Harding. All existing tapes from the Blonde
On Blonde sessions are 4-track.
So, in February and March 1966, Bob Dylan would conclude the
recording of Blonde On Blonde during two sets of sessions. For the first one in
February, all the details are available:

The Basement Tapes are not stored in the Columbia files so they were

not available for examination this time. We will hopefuliy get back to these tapes later.
There have been rumours of a September 1967 session prior to the actual
recording of John Wesley Harding. There are no session dates in Bob Dylan's name in
the Nashville log books prior to the three John Wesley Harding sessions. For the first
two sessions, all details are available:

After Nashville Skyline was released on April 9, Dylan did a few sessions, recording
material of which some was later to be used for Self Portrait. There followed nearly one
year without any studio work at all. So far, only the 8-track tape for the first of these
sessions has been located.

It is not known which songs were recorded during the overdub session.
One of 1, 2, 4 or 5 released on New Morning.
Probably 15 released on The Bootleg Series.
For 24-36 neither the 16-track master nor the recording sheets are available, but all songs
were probably done in only one take.

Bob Dylan's work in 1971 was very inspired. Leon Russell has described the
sessions in Blue Rock Studios as very dynamic and positive. But confusion prevails when
it comes to this session. The session dates are documented by bills for studio time. But
only two tapes have so far been located: one 8-track master and one 16-track master.
They are labeled April 21, 1971, but this was probably the date when Watching The
River Flow was pulled for single release. In addition, no track sheets are available. So far
it has only been possible to listen through one of the two tapes, and apparently at least
one more session tape was recorded.

Track 1 - 11 labeled "Job 76895" on tape box, but that probably refers to Bob Dylan's
Greatest Hits Vol. 2. The higher CO number for When I Paint My Masterpiece is
probably a consequence of that song being pulled from the session tapes at a later
occasion than Watching The River Flow.
12 released as single.
Listing is incomplete as only reel 2 of at least three reels has been listened through.
Personally I was very happy to find all the tapes Dylan recorded with
Happy Traum in September, as I like this session very much.

A huge American tour and nearly a year later, Dylan went back to
New York to record Blood On The Tracks. The album was to have an unusual recording
history - Dylan changing his recording horses in mid-stream - but, as we all know, it
turned out to be one of his greatest records of all.

After the test pressing of Blood On The Tracks had been made
and sent out to a few journalists, Dylan decided to re-record five of the songs in
Minnesota with his brother as the producer. The master tapes and recording sheets were

It is interesting that all vocal tracks on the 16-track masters and all
mixed down tapes of Hurricane as it was recorded in July 1975 were erased December
7, 1976. This had to do with factual mistakes in the story as told in the song which were
considered actionable. This was the reason why Hurricane was rerecorded four months
later.

In a small town - Rosendale - upstate New York, they used to produce the hardest cement
you could get. The basis for this cement was limestone, which was mined in the hills
around Rosendale. Then came Portland cement, which was cheaper to produce and which
meant an end to Rosendale cement. During the cold war there was concern about a
possible nuclear war, which created interest in how to preserve valuable data and
recorded material from destruction. The old mines got a renaissance; first an old iron
mine (which gave name to the company Iron Mountain), and later the limestone mine in
Rosendale. In Rosendale more than half a million tapes are now stored in the old mine.
Among these are several thousand Bob Dylan tapes. This is why I found myself
underground, upstate New York, to do research for the next article in this series.
Excluding the live album "Hard Rain" and the movie "Renaldo and Clara", time has
now come to consider "Street Legal", "Slow Train Coming" and "Saved".
The recording of "Street Legal" actually started with a number of auditions to find a
replacement for background vocalist Debbie Dye, who left the band after the tour in
Japan/Australia/New Zealand. On April 13, 1978, two singers auditioned unsuccessfully. On April 19, Carolyn Dennis had her first audition, which was continued
on April 20 and 21. It must have turned out satisfactory, and on April 24 she rehearsed
with Bob Dylan and Bobbye Hall.
Unfortunately none of the tapes from these rehearsals are stored in New York and they
have not been available for viewing. This is also the case for most of the multitrack tapes
from the real "Street Legal " session. Information about these sessions is therefore
incomplete.
The takes to make up the album were laid down in 5 days on 24 tracks, starting April 25,
1978:

"Planet Waves", "Blood On The Tracks" and "Desire" were all recorded in 6 days
(excluding overdubs). The 3 following albums - "Street Legal", "Slow Train Coming"
and "Saved " - were each recorded in just 5 days.
For "Slow Train Coming" unfortunately 2 of the 12 24 track masters were not available
for examination this time. They have been located, though. An interesting surprise is a
full band version of "When He Returns".

"Slow Train Coming" and "Saved" were recorded in the same studio
and with the same producers. The musical approach was different, though, as the material
on "Slow Train Coming" was basically unknown to the musicians prior to the sessions,
whereas the songs on "Saved" had been played by the musicians nearly every night for
more than 3 months before the recording sessions.

possible to structure the "Shot Of Love" sessions to some degree. But what is listed
below is probably incomplete and subject to changes.
I have copied information about the tracks directly from the recording sheets/tape boxes.
FS = false start. LFS = long false start. CT = complete take. INC = incomplete take.
These specifications are used inconsistently, and in several cases no such information
about the takes is available.
Angelina, and Need A Woman are credited as being recorded on May 4, 1981 on "The
Bootleg Series, Vol. 1-3". This is not true, as they were mixed on that day, but recorded
earlier.

Probably because the technical quality of the recordings made at Rundown Studios was
not very good, Dylan decided to try out several studios in the Los Angeles area, before
choosing a studio to record Shot Of Love. The first of these test-recordings took place in
Studio 55, where an 8-track recording was done.

The next day Bob Dylan and the group had a long and relaxed session at Cream Studio.
Many takes from this and the following sessions were pulled and put onto one tape reel,
which was used later for copyright purposes, and which was actually circulating among
collectors for several years as a mysterious session-tape, of which no one knew the
origin.

The first sequence tape of the album was made on May 12. It had the
following songs:
Side 1: *Shot of Love / Heart Of Mine / *Property Of Jesus / *Lenny Bruce /
*Watered Down Love.
Side 2: Dead Man, Dead Man / *In The Summertime / Magic / Trouble / *Every
Grain Of Sand / Angelina.
Angelina was sequenced, but Magic was just added unnumbered. Takes marked with *
were pulled from this sequence tape to the album master on June 1.
Apparently it was necessary to do a few re-recordings. For the first of these sessions only
the contracts are available:

There have been many rumours about the nature of the material Dylan
worked with in Rundown Studio between the release of Shot Of Love and the recording
of Infidels, including rumours of a session with Jack Bruce. I am pretty sure that many
tapes exist from these sessions - only a few have been made available for viewing. Not
much is written on the tape boxes:

In relation to the rumours of a Bob Dylan-Jack Bruce Session the tape recorded on June
14, 1982 is interesting. The tape box says Dylan & Bruce. But which Bruce?

Instrumental tracks
Musicians: Bob Dylan (guitar), Jack Bruce? (bass), Bruce Gary (drums).
On tape box: Bob & Nick & Bruce Gary (Nick is erased and Gary probably written after
Nick was erased). Bruce Gary is an American drummer who played in the group The
Knack, but he actually played several years with.... yes, Jack Bruce. So this may be the
long time rumoured Jack Bruce session. On the other hand, I had an opportunity to ask
Jack Bruce about this session some years ago. He replied "I never played with Bob
Dylan". I also asked Dylan about the session (during the Sirmione press conference in
1984). He replied "Well, I wonder what happened to those tapes".

After having jammed in Rundown Studios, Santa Monica, with many musicians during
1982 and been around New York City in early 1983, Bob Dylan went into Power Station,
the famous New York Studio, in April 1983 with a handful of skilled musicians:
From England, Mark Knopfler (guitar), Mick Taylor (guitar), and Alan Clark
(keyboards); From Jamaica, Robbie Shakespeare (bass) and Sly Dunbar (drums).
Many of the songs recorded during the month they spent in the studio were either done
136
spontaneously (all the cover versions), or worked on from the basic riffs (Foot Of Pride).
Fortunately these recording sessions are well documented and the following listings must
be as close as one can get to completeness without listening to each and every tape.
Information about the overdub sessions in mid-May (right after the ordinary recording
sessions) has been fully available and documents that "Full Force" did not overdub
"Death Is Not The End" in June/July, but immediately following the recording sessions.
Information about later (June/July 1983) overdub sessions (if they took place) has not
been available.
As earlier, notations about the takes (FS = False Start, LFS = Long False Start, CT =
Complete Take) are given as they appear on the recording sheets and to avoid mistakes I
have not tried to Interpret them or put them into any new system.
Interestingly, "Blind Willie McTell" was the first and the last song to be recorded during
these sessions, indicating that a satisfactory format for the song was not found easily.

Now, to get down to serious business, the song which was recorded in most takes was
"Foot Of Pride" (43 takes, of which 14 are listed as complete takes - enough to make up
an album!). "Foot Of Pride" was also, according to the recording sheets, recorded in the
most different styles: acoustic, piano, reggae. There are probably rock, swamp, and waltz
versions as well.
There are not many secrets left, when it comes to discographical information about the
Infidels sessions. But don't expect this to be a standard for the albums chronologically to
follow.
Work on Empire Burlesque started right after Bob Dylan's return to the USA from the
1984 tour of Europe.

Empire Burlesque was released June 8, 1985. Even before that, Bob Dylan was very
active jamming and recording with new groups of musicians, concluding with extensive
sessions in the spring of 1986 for Knocked Out Loaded. The session at the Eurythmics'
"Church" in November 1985 is an example of such a jam/recording, but there were many
others, and they were mixed with Dylan's participation in Live Aid and Farm Aid, and
other activities, such as the shooting of music videos. In October the release of Biograph
was a milestone. So 1985 and 1986 were probably two of Bob Dylan's most active years,
at least in the 1980s.

These four jam and recording sessions were appetizers for a very busy Spring to come 1986.
After having jammed with several different constellations of musicians during 1985,
Dylan seemed to have found the rhythm section he needed for his next album during the
last 1985 jam, October 31: Raymond Lee Pounds (drums) and Vito San Filippo (bass).
But first - after performing at the Martin Luther King Day on January 20, 1986 - he
toured Australia and Japan February 5 - March 10. The first recording session in 1986
took place during this visit to the Far East with his tour-band, Tom Petty & The

After returning to the USA, the US summer tour was announced on April 10, and shortly
thereafter Dylan started working on his next studio album. It took nearly a month with
only few days off.
Due to the nature of the available information, the following listing is far from complete
and is probably imprecise in several aspects. Anyway, I hope it gives an overall view of
the recording process leading to Knocked Out Loaded. It consisted of basic recordingsessions and overdub-sessions, in some cases mixed on the same day.

Two days after the US-tour, Knocked Out Loaded was released (August 8), and less
than 2 weeks later, Bob Dylan was in England to film Hearts Of Fire, keeping him busy
in September and October of 1986.
The next recording session took place in Townhouse Studio, London, England, August
27 & 28, 1986, but this has been documented elsewhere.
1987 was less busy for Dylan - in particular touring activities were less intensive. The
first sessions for Down In The Groove took place in the Spring, alternating with
rehearsals at The Grateful Dead's studio in San Rafael for the short Dylan/Dead summer
tour.

The recording sessions for what would be regarded as yet another turning point in
Dylan's creative career - Oh Mercy - took place in a mobile studio, situated for the
occasion in New Orleans. Dylan still recorded only few takes of each song, but by now
he used overdubbing routinely, which naturally makes the overview of the sessions for
the album very complex. The information available regarding the Oh Mercy sessions is
incomplete as to the rough tapes. That is: much more was recorded than what is listed
below. On the other hand, information about the released tracks is quite precise, including
dates for overdubbing.
As Bob Dylan probably spent long periods in the studio and recorded every day, and as
175
information about this is not generally available, I have not listed overdubbing by Bob
Dylan, vocal or instrumental, individually but mentioned it in connection with the basic
take of the song. I have listed overdubbing by others individually, though, as these
sessions are better documented in the available information.

Even though not documented in detail, Dylan and Lanois worked many days during
April and probably May 1989 on the songs, deciding to change and add a number of
instrumental tracks in June and July. Dylan can not have been present at these sessions
due to intensive touring.

After less than a year away from recording, Dylan went back into the studio to
record another album immediately after New Year 1989/90. The recording of the basic
takes is not well documented in the available material, but as a surprisingly high number
of overdubs were done in April and May 1990, it seems logical to assume that the basic
tracks were laid down with few instruments. The first session took place 6th January.
