" f you dont take care of your body,

where will you live?" anonymous
The Romans created the concept of the
spa; and even then, realized that spa
treatments like detoxifying, hydrating and
purifying not only cleansed, but also did
wonders for ones overall physical and
mental well being.
Today, taking the time to pamper
oneself with a spa experience, elevates
the bath/shower from a daily ritual to a
mini vacation opportunity in maintaining
inner balance and health. Tending to ones

body, mind and spirit through spa

therapies can also aid in the prevention of
illness and the reduction of stress.
Creating your own spa products and
experience in your home makes pampering yourself convenient and affordable.
The recipes in this brochure can be made

using a variety of products available from

most grocery, pharmacy and craft stores.
Most recipes include suggestions for scents
using specific essential oils. However, it is
easy to switch or combine different essential oils to create new pleasure scents.
Have fun and experiment!
Canola oil because of its high
monounsaturated fatty acid content is
noted for its conditioning qualities. Its light
texture and scentless nature complements
other spa ingredients, while its naturally
occurring vitamin E adds to the shelf life
of the completed recipes. It is not only a
healthful food choice but also great for
cosmetic purposes!

found in animal and
vegetable fats. Small
flakes are ideal as an
emulsifying agent in
creams, lotions, deodorants

Stearic acid is best known for the
"pearly" and "waxy" feel that it adds
to body care products.
Witch Hazel
Extract from the leaves and bark of the
Hamamelis virgin plant used as an
effective astringent. It cleanses the skin

saucepan from heat and let cool slightly.
Add the Friar's Basalm and essential oils.
Mix to combine. Place the mixture in the

has solidified. Using an electric mixer, beat
the cooled mixture until thick and creamy.
Add the remaining shortening and continue
to beat until the mixture is white and thick.
Store the contents in a sealable container.
Use within one month.
* Pecan oil is often recommended as an
emollient in the cosmetic industry.
If allergies are a concern, substitute
canola oil.

Mix the baking

soda and cornstarch
together. Add the canola oil, the drops
of food colouring and the essential
oil. Using a water mister, mist the
mixture lightly one time. Mix well
until there are no lumps and the color
is well blended. Add the citric acid. Heap
as much of the mixture as possible into a
mould. Press down very firmly packing
the mixture well. Do not add more mixture to the mold after firmly packing it as
it will not create a cohesive bath bomb.
Let the bath bomb air dry for 1-2 days on
a baking rack.
Interesting variation
Use Lavender essential oil as well as 12
tsp (2mL) of dried lavender blossoms.
Add the lavender blossoms when mixing
the baking soda and cornstarch together.

Grate bar of soap to make approximately

1 cup (250 mL) of grated soap. Crush the
grated soap with a spoon in order to
make the pieces smaller. In a food processor or blender, grind oatmeal. Pierce the
vitamin E capsule with pin and squeeze
contents into the grated soap. Add canola
oil, canola seed, and ground oatmeal and

mix well. Add hot water and essential oils

- mix thoroughly. The mixture should be
lumpy and damp - not wet. Line a mold
with plastic wrap; press in approximately
1
4 cup (50mL) of the mixture, and press
very firmly. Continue to add more mixture
into mold in 14 cup (50 mL) increments
until all of the mixture is pressed into a

whole bar. The more pressure that is

applied, the more condensed the mixture
and, the longer-lasting the soap bar that is
created. Remove finished bar from the
mold and let air dry on a rack for at least
1-2 days.
