Talk about it (before the lm)
Have you seen any lms that show a childs experience of war?
Why might a lmmaker choose a young protagonist for a war
story? How might their viewpoint be diferent to an adults?
Talk about it (after the lm)
Why do you think building a cemetery appeals to the children?
Where do they get the idea? What does it tell us about their
thoughts and emotions?
How do the two families in the lm treat each other and their
children? How might their behaviour be read as a metaphor for
the war?
An alternative ending was shot for this lm: the two young
actors read the story of the lm in a book. When the story ends
the boy comforts the girl, telling her Its only a story to which
she replies stories are real. What do you think is meant by
this? Do you think this should have been included in the nal
version?
Does it remind you of any other lms - the story, setting,
characters, the way it is lmed or edited, the music or sound?
What are the similarities?
