English Practice
The Irmo Branch Library (6251 St. Andrews Road) is offering free classes
this fall for adult internationals (age 18+) wishing to practice their English. It is a
conversational class, so participants mostly practice vocabulary, idioms and
phrasal verbs, listening and conversation.
The class is relaxed and informal. The classes are on Tuesdays at 6 PM and last
around 1 hour. We do ask that students register, so that we can make sure we
have enough material. However, students can join at any time. To register, call
798-7880 x 2.

Enterovirus:
A CRMS student was hospitalized with Enterovirus. This
student was not diagnosed with the more severe EV-D68
virus. We have received a report that the student is do-
ing well, and we are continuing to monitor the student's
recovery. We are not aware of any other student experi-
encing this illness.
Out of an abundance of caution, we are cleaning our classrooms and common
areas daily and encouraging students and teachers to wash their hands frequently,
cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing, and asking parents to keep stu-
dents home if they are not feeling well. Buses serving our students have also been
disinfected.
We will continue to monitor this situation closely and will contact families imme-
diately if there is any reason for concern. Thanks so much to the entire Irmo
Middle family for their concerns and support. If you have questions or concerns,
please contact the school nurse at 803-476-3600.

Bright Ideas at IMS
This year at Irmo Middle School seventh
grade students will grow tomatoes through
a $1,000 Bright Ideas Grant provided by
Mid Carolina Electric Cooperative. With
this this financial support, students will graft
tomato seedlings to disease resistant root
stock. They will then care for and track the
plants life throughout the school year. At
the end of the project, students should
have a grafted plant to take home.
Through this unit of study, students will
benefit in each core class as they see con-
tent areas come to life through plants, one
of our most abundant natural resources.
Students will be able to apply information they have learned inside the classroom to natural and societal
phenomena. The goal of this project is to teach state standards through the lens of a relevant, hands-on
experience. Through this experience, students will learn how to think critically about agriculture in a
modern society and how scientific innovations can impact world hunger. Students should also gain gar-
dening experience through this investigation and thereby increase their future sustainability as adults. It is
our intent that students will understand how agriculture touches every aspect of our lives.
We are very appreciative of the financial support given by Mid Carolina Electric Cooperative. Their con-
tributions will allow our students to engage in deeper learning and do work that really matters. Addi-
tionally, we are very proud of Mrs. Regan Moore (7th Grade Science Teacher) and Ms. Brittan Fox
(Resident Agriculturalist) for their pursuit of external financial resources to support classroom
instruction. By: Robert S. Jackson, Ed.S., Principal

IMS CELEBRATES RED RIBBON WEEK
Irmo Middle School invites the community to take a visible stand against drugs by celebrating Red Rib-
bon Week from October 22-31.
Red Ribbon Week raises awareness of drug use and the problems related to drugs facing our community,
and encourages parents, educators, business owners, and other community organizations to promote drug-
free lifestyles. This years celebration will kick off on October 22.
Red Ribbon Week encourages our entire community to adopt healthy, drug-free lifestyles, said James
Fanning IMS guidance counselor. The campaign brings together parents, schools, and businesses as we
look for innovative ways to keep kids and communities drug free.
The red ribbon symbolizes a continuing commitment to reducing the demand for illicit drugs in our com-
munities. In 1985, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique S. "Kiki" Camarena
was killed by drug traffickers. Shortly after Camarena's death, citizens from his hometown of Calexico,
California, began wearing red ribbons to remember him and commemorate his sacrifice. Congress estab-
lished Red Ribbon Week in 1988.
Red Ribbon Week gives us the opportunity to be vocal and visible in our efforts to achieve a drug-free
community, said James Fanning. Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol and other
drugs when parents and other role models are clear and consistent in their opposition to substance use and
abuse.
Visit www.getsmartaboutdrugs.com for more information about Red Ribbon Week or contact James Fan-
ning IMS guidance counselor 476-3671.
