Introduction
Large irrigated area, variety of crops and high population dependency for livelihood
makes Indian agriculture very promising. India is the largest producer of fresh fruits, pulses,
and spices and second largest producer of fresh vegetables, sugarcane and groundnut. India
allocated $ 3.54 billion for the field of agriculture, which is 14% higher than the previous year.
Inefficient usage of agri-inputs, labor problem in farming, low farm productivity and poor
profitability, and lack of infrastructure support are key challenges in Indian agriculture.
Micro Irrigation
Adoption of Micro Irrigation can provide benefits like increasing farm productivity,
addressing agri input constraints, reducing burden on groundwater, and technology
dissemination and infrastructure support. Creating awareness about drip irrigation is the key
challenge in improving the penetration of Drip Irrigation. MI industry has to traverse long
distance despite huge potential, proven benefits and government intention to support. The
penetration of Micro Irrigation in India ranges around 10% and this shows that the
tremendous potential needs to be exploited.
