Introduction
This guide has been developed to provide you with simple
instructions on how to install a Viridian kitchen. The
dimensions and specications detailed in this guide must
be followed, to ensure that our kitchens are tted to the
highest standard.
This manual should be read and understood before you
start any work. If you have any questions relating to this
manual please contact your Contract Administrator as
detailed within your contract.
Please note, failure to comply with this document may
result in your contract being terminated and your company
being removed from our approved contractor list.

Health and safety
At Viridian we really care about our
colleagues and customers. Health and
safety is very much a key ingredient and of
paramount importance to us.
Your ability to promote, provide and adhere
to excellent health and safety is therefore
vital to the provision of our services.
Before you start any work within our homes,
you will be required to provide us with up-
to-date health and safety documentation as
detailed below. On site you will be expected
to demonstrate good working practices
by working cleanly, safely and efciently
whilst ensuring that our customers are fully
consulted and respected throughout the
duration of the project.
1.1 Approval
In order to carry out work on behalf of Viridian, you
will be asked to complete a health and safety form
(pre-qualication questionnaire). You will also be asked
to provide evidence of your Public Liability Insurance,
which shows 5 million worth of cover and where
applicable, cover for you to carry out hot works. A
completed Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) form will also
be necessary. You will not be offered work until approval
has been given by Viridian in respect of all these
documents.
1.2 PPE
You are responsible for and as such required to carry
appropriate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), and
you will be asked to complete a PPE check sheet. This
check sheet should be kept in the health and safety site
le, which must be available to view at all times.
All small items of PPE such as goggles, gloves and masks
must be stored in an appropriate sized secure rigid
container, with an up-to-date content check sheet. You
are required to wear a hard hat where applicable. A re
extinguisher should be on site at all times.

1.3 COSHH
You may be handling hazardous materials on site.
Therefore you are required to provide a COSHH
safety data sheet (Control of Substances Hazardous
to Health) to assess the risk of hazardous materials.
These sheets should be displayed clearly within your
site le. Viridian will carry out health and safety
inspections and these sheets will need to be presented
as part of the inspection process.
1.4 Risk and method statements
All site activities will require you to complete a relevant
risk and method statement, to reect the activities
being carried out. In most cases these will need to be
site specic and should be kept in the health and safety
folder along with your generic method statements.
1.5 Site register
A site register must be provided and kept on each site.
You are required to ensure this is up to date at all times.
This must be kept at the front of your health and safety
folder.
1.6 Accidents
You will provide and maintain an accident book.
You must record all accidents and near misses.
The completed sheet must be given to the project
coordinator who will pass this onto Viridians Health
and Safety team. These sheets will be analysed, and in
some cases we may send out instructions to work in a
different manner to, avoid an accident, or change the
material type accordingly. You will not be monitored
on the number of accidents or near misses that you
have. We encourage you to complete this folder as
accurately as possible, because it will enable us to
introduce safer methods of working in the future.
1.7 Work area
Working areas must be identied to the resident
before works commence. This will ensure that the
resident understands which areas they can or cannot
access safely during the work. Restricted areas should
be cordoned off using either hazard tape or a safety
barrier. Residents should be advised that tools may
be left unsupervised within this cordoned area, and
that they should not enter this area without your
permission. Tools or hazardous materials should not
be left outside cordoned off work areas under any
circumstances.
1.8 Materials and rubbish
All materials are to be stacked neatly and should not
block escape routes. Rubbish should be stacked in
an area that has been agreed with the resident. You
should also arrange rubbish collection with the resident
as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary risks. Stored
materials or rubbish should not be left unattended for
more than 24 hours. If a skip is used, the surrounding
area must be kept clean and tidy at all times.

1.9 On site documentation and signage
You will be required to display appropriate and up-to-
date health and safety signs and a health and safety site
folder. This folder should be accessible to customers at all
times.
Your health and safety site folder should contain the
following and in this order:
Site register
Daily accident record
Letter to customer detailing the work required
Health and safety site check sheet
Schedule of work
CDM (2007)
Risk assessments
Method statements
Asbestos report
Hot Works Permit
All relevant COSHH data sheets.
All of the above documents should be updated regularly
throughout the project and be available on site for
inspection at all times.
Whilst working on behalf of Viridian, you are obliged to
display the following notices in accordance with current
Health & Safety Legislation. All the following notices
must be mounted on 4mm ply to ensure they are kept in
good condition:

The contractors Public Liability Insurance
Notice to other residents apologising
for any inconvenience
CDM (2007).

Please note that you are responsible for
your personal health and safety. You will
be expected to comply with all statutory
legislation and adopt safe and sensible
methods of work. Failure to comply with
the above may result in your contract
being terminated and your company being
removed from our approved contractor list.
Signs and work notices must be xed securely, level
and displayed in a prominent location on site. Signs
xed within communal areas should be removed where
appropriate at the end of each working day.
The Construction Design Management Regulations
(2007) will apply in all cases, but a higher level of
responsibility will be in place for all sites where notice has
been given. You will be informed and will be instructed
regarding the information you will need to supply to the
Health & Safety Coordinator.
1.10 Access
Doors should not be left open and unattended at any
time. When working where access is required through a
communal area, contact shall be made in person where
possible with all residents, and disruption and mess shall
be kept to a minimum. All areas should be cleaned at
the end of each working day.

Residents choice
Whilst in most cases the kitchen layout will remain the same, in some
circumstances you may need to consult with your Contract Administrator to
recongure the kitchen layout. This could be due to regulation changes or to
meet specic needs of our customers.
Our in-house kitchen designer or Contract Administrator will design the
kitchen layout and discuss the available choices with the customer before
any work commences. Our customer will have a signed plan detailing the
agreed layout, which will be provided to you. This drawing should be in your
possession before you start any work.
If a resident requests minor changes to the kitchen design these must be
shown on the drawing and be signed off by our customer. Failure to comply
with this drawing may result in you being asked to reinstall the kitchen at your
own expense.
No changes to the layout requiring additional or different cabinets are to
be accepted unless a specic agreement is obtained from the Contract
Administrator.

Before the work starts
3.1 Customer care
Whilst working on behalf of Viridian, you will
be required to wear:
Dark blue trousers, jeans or smart dark
blue shorts
Viridian lime green t-shirt
Viridian lime green sweatshirt
Safety footwear
PPE as required.
Viridian t-shirts and sweatshirts are available on request
at a minimal charge.
Clothing worn should be clean and presentable. Personal
hygiene should be maintained at all times.
The following site rules must be adhered to:
No smoking within 10 metres of a Viridian property
No swearing
No radios or music
No alcohol on site
All sites must be clean and tidy at all times.
You will be asked to leave the site if you fail
to comply with any of the rules above. You
may also possibly be removed from our
approved list of contractors.
Introduce yourself and your team to the resident. You
must also obtain and wear a visible Viridian ID badge.
Discuss and agree with the resident your working
hours and our safe site policy.
Agree with the customer where you can store
materials, rubbish, or a skip if required.
Confrm kitchen layout with our customer.
Complete your health and safety check sheet.
Confrm you have all information required in your
health and safety site folder.
Ensure you have specifc risk and method statements,
including all relevant COSHH assessments required.

3.2 Tools and equipment
You are required to supply all tools such as knife blades
and jigsaw blades to carry out the task you have agreed
to. All power tools must be 110v and be PAT tested.
All tools should be in good condition, free from damage
and stored correctly during a project.
Viridian does not accept responsibility for loss or damage
to tools whilst carrying out work. Tools should be cleared
away whilst unattended and cleared from the site at the
end of each working day.
3.3 Protection
Protecting the customers ooring and furniture is your
responsibility. You are required to use dust or polythene
sheets on all furniture that may get damaged with a
suitable hard oor or carpet protector. Polythene sheets
and carpet protection will be provided on request free
of charge. The site must be cleaned at the end of each
working day in order to minimise disruption to the
resident.
The resident will have been asked to remove all of their
personal effects and small items of furniture. Larger
items of furniture will be moved by you only after
you have received a signed disclaimer letter from the
resident.
All furniture and white goods should be adequately
protected and any damage evident before you start
must be brought to the attention of the resident.
Dust sheets on oors are prohibited ensure a
suitable oor protector is used.

3.4 Checking materials
You will be responsible for checking the quality and
condition of all materials delivered to site. If materials
are signed for and then found to be damaged, or the
correct quantity does not arrive on site, the cost may be
deducted from your contract. Before any deduction is
applied ofce checks will also be carried out to ensure
the correct order has been placed with the supplier.
Material orders are limited to one bulk order, which
should be planned accordingly followed by two further
orders; this would include a rubbish clearance and sundry
materials that may be required.
All delivery notes should be retained and
passed to the Contract Administrator.

4.1 Multi-trade specication
Up to 10 no kitchen base or wall units of any size
(maximum of 20 doors).
Inset high-quality stainless steel sink unit, including all
ttings, waste pipes and new pipework as necessary.
Fitting a washing machine waste outlet (standpipe or
spigot) where required, including all valves and stop
taps.
38mm post formed worktop, including all joints and
edging strips.
Removing existing tiles and ftting new glazed ceramic
tiles to the worktop and extending down the cooker
space.
Boxing under boilers where necessary.
Continuous plinth.
Upgrade the existing door or replace with a new
door altogether, as necessary, to meet current re
regulations.
Running a 25mm plastic condense pipe from the sink
base to the underside of the boiler.

No wall cupboard should be installed within 150mm
of the cooker aperture or hob. Where a cookers
not provided and allowance is made for gas cooker
connection, cooker space to be a minimum of
650mm wide.
Please note that decorating is only provided to residents
living in our supported housing or care schemes. This will
include all preparation to the walls, ceilings and woodwork.
Two coats of emulsion and an oil-based undercoat and a
gloss should be applied on all previously painted surfaces.
4.2 Electrical specication
Fit new extractor fan or replace the existing one
including core drilling if necessary
New kitchen ring main up to a max of 10 socket
outlets
Replace with the 10 way consumer unit
Up to 3no switched fused spur outlets
Cooker control unit with single socket outlet/cooker
outlet plate
Earth bonding where necessary
Fluorescent light ftting and switch
Smoke or heat detector
An electrical test should be conducted once the work is
completed.
4.3 Flooring specication
Where requested, you should take up old ooring
and prepare the sub-oor for the application of new
oor covering. Lay Polysafe ooring after preparing
the surface with self-levelling compound or 6mm ply,
depending on the oor nish. You should also ensure
that the ooring extends under plinths and that plinth
strips are used. All oors should be nished with a clear
silicone bead to the perimeter and plinths.

All installations must be carried out in accordance with
the following:
BS 8000-5:1990 Workmanship on building sites.
Code of practice for carpentry, joinery and general xings.
BS 8000-10:1995 Workmanship on building sites.
Code of practice for plastering and rendering.
BS 8000-11:1989 Workmanship on building sites.
Code of practice for wall and oor tiling.
BS 8000-13:1989 Workmanship on building sites.
Code of practice for hot and cold water services
(domestic scale).
All installations must be carried out in accordance with
the following:
BS 7671 Requirements for electrical installations. IEE
wiring regulation. 17th edition.
BS EN 50110 part 1 & 2 Operation of Electrical appliances
BS1362 Specication of general purpose fuse links for
domestic appliances.
BS1363 part 1 5 13A plugs and socket outlets.

|
Installation guidelines and timescales
5.1 General working hours
A kitchen installation should take no longer
than ve days. However, this will depend on
the size of the kitchen and if any additional
work has been identied during the removal
of the old kitchen. All work outside the
component rate will need to be agreed
with the Contract Administrator before you
progress with the work. You will be required
to sign an amended contract, which will
detail this change.
A working day is from 8am until 5pm,
Monday to Friday. Working outside of
these hours will need to be agreed prior
to starting work. The customer and
adjoining neighbours would all need to
be in agreement and should be consulted
well in advance.
You must ensure that during the work all
essential services are available. These
include drinking water, electricity and
washing facilities. However, during working
hours, the resident may be reasonably
restricted access into the working area as
previously detailed in section 1.7.

5.2 Removal and disposal
Before any work commences, please remember that the
resident must be aware of the safe working area. This
should be identied using either hazard tape or a safety
barrier.
Disconnect and safely move the residents appliances to
an area away from any potential damage and protect
accordingly.
Remove old kitchen cabinets in a safe manner removing
xings to minimise damage to the walls and carry to
an area identied for the storage of rubbish. Store all
rubbish safely and cover with a tarpaulin. If a skip is
being used then the area must be kept clean and tidy.
Remove oor coverings and tiles using the correct tools
and adequate PPE. The tiles should be bagged using
rubble sacks and placed ready for collection within the
previously agreed site location.
At this stage, the site should be cleared and swept
leaving an empty room.
Where possible, all rubbish clearances should be
organised for the same day. If this is not possible,
rubbish must be stacked safely and covered with a
tarpaulin. The rubbish must be collected the next day or
within a 24 hour period.
You are responsible for arranging rubbish removal and
associated protection within these timescales.
All clearances are to be arranged by you via our administration team.

Ensure the back panel is left intact.
Pipe work should be soldered where possible and clipped at 600mm.
5.2.1 Water and waste services
Hot and cold water should be run in 15mm or 22mm
copper tubes where appropriate. Pipe work should be
soldered at every joint. Compression ttings are also
permitted where a soldered joint is not suitable. All
services must be cut neatly through the back panel.
Isolation valves for water and the washing machine
should be installed within easy reach and be accessible
within the cabinet.
Waste pipes should be clipped every 600mm and
be installed at the correct gradient. Joints should be
connected using solvent weld. Access points for clearing
blockages should also be installed where necessary in an
accessible position.
A temporary sink will need to be left in situ whilst the
electrical work is carried out

Day 2
5.3 Electrical installation
The whole of the electrical installation will comply with
the Regulations for Electrical Installation issued by the
Institute of Electrical Engineers, Edition 17.
Within the scope of the specication and the schedule
provided, the contractor will be responsible for the
installation, testing, inspection and the certication of
works.
On completion, the works should receive a National
Inspection Council Electrical Installation Contracting
Certifcate (NICEIC) or equivalent.
In all cases, cables within a kitchen installation should be
run within approved conduit and chased into the walls.
Chasing shall be lled to a at surface with bonding
and a nish plaster. Cables that are run outside of the
kitchen area should run in mini trunking given that
the Contract Administrator is in agreement. This is to
minimise disruption to the customers decoration.
Cables are not to be run diagonally, all cables run behind
base units will be contained in xed trunking. All back
boxes to be securely xed and grommets used where
applicable.
All socket faces will be installed 150mm above the
worktop height to the bottom of the socket (1065mm
from oor level). Sockets must be installed a minimum
distance of 300mm from the sink top and 150mm
minimum from the cooker aperture or hob.
Please refer to electrical specication for socket numbers
and locations in section 4.2.
All chases should be marked clearly, cables will be run in conduit and made good to a ush nish.

All installations must be carried out in
accordance with the following:
BS 7671 Requirements for electrical
installations. IEE wiring regulation. 17th
edition.
BS EN 50110 part 1 & 2 Operation of Electrical
appliances
BS1362 Specication of general purpose fuse
links for domestic appliances.
BS1363 part 1 5 13A plugs and socket outlets.
All socket outlets should be level and set out to meet the
current electrical regulations.
Consumer units need to be installed to meet the current
17th edition regulations; cables should be neatly
terminated and clipped where necessary.
All cables following rst x electrical installation shall be
rolled and wedged inside boxes to prevent damage to
the cable or possible injury.

Day 3
5.4 Fitting the kitchen cabinets
5.4.1 At a glance
Height of foor level to top of base unit should be
870mm.
Height from foor to top of worktop should be 910mm.
Installation height to the top of wall units should be
2052mm.
Electrical sockets must be installed 150mm above
worktop (1065mm from oor level).
Electrical sockets not to be installed within 300mm of
the sink top and kept 150mm away from the cooker
aperture or hob.
Corner unit installation measurements:
800mm corner base should be installed at 1025mm
1000mm corner base should be installed at 1125mm
600mm corner wall units should be installed at
625mm.
The kitchen should be installed from the highest point of
the kitchen oor. The measurement should be 870mm -
this height is to the top of the base unit, not the worktop.
Appliance apertures must be a minimum of 610mm.
Appliances should be able to be tted with ease. Cooker
apertures must be 650mm minimum.
5.4.2 Base units
Begin the installation with the base cabinets. If the
kitchen is designed with a corner cabinet, this must be
installed rst.
Units must be scribed to the wall, if necessary, to achieve
a ush tting not exceeding 2mm. The cabinet gables
are to be xed together using connector cams. Coloured
screw caps should be used to conceal all screw heads.
All units should be installed strictly in accordance with
the manufacturers installation guidelines.

Fix to base using 16mm screws. Adjustable leg is pushed into tting. Adjust leg to approx 150mm.
Drawer runners need to be tted using screws supplied; the cabinets are pre-marked for ease.
Cabinet doors are tted with the arrow marked on the hinge pointing away from the back panel.
Ensure all cabinets are scribed to the wall and should not exceed 2mm.

5.4.3 Fitting the wall units
Before installing the wall unit ensure you have levelled a
horizontal line at 2052mm. This line is to the top of the
wall unit. The wall brackets should be tted 60mm below
this line.
For added strength and stability, the wall unit should
be xed 100mm up from the bottom of the unit and
through the 15mm back panel. A suitable wall plug and
screw should be used. The screw head should be capped
with a colour coded screw cap. Following this, the bracket
face plates can be tted to complete the installation.
All units should be installed strictly in accordance with
the manufacturers installation guidelines.
All wall units being tted to plasterboard walls must be
xed securely. The use of plasterboard xings is not
permitted. The unit must be tted to a timber support.
In some cases, the plasterboard will have to be removed
in order to facilitate this.
To prevent damage to the doors, do not t them until the
kitchen is completed.
Wall units must be set back from the cooker aperture by
a minimum of 150mm.
You must ensure the xing brackets are secure.
Ensure additional xings are applied to the bottom part of the cabinet (see detail above for location).

5.4.4 Worktops, sink and taps
Worktops should be cut face down and into the nose to
avoid damage to the laminate surface.
All cuts and raw edges should be prepared, to leave a
smooth surface.
After the hole is cut for the sink top, all exposed edges
should be sealed using PVA glue before the sink is tted.
Aluminium joint strips and end caps should also be
tted; the raw ends should be sealed with PVA glue to
extend the worktop life.
Protection to the worktop is of utmost importance during
the installation. You should avoid storing tools, tiles and
other items on the worktops to prevent damage.
Sink tops should be installed 50mm from the front edge of the worktop.
PVA glue should be applied to exposed surfaces.
All monobloc taps should be tted before the sink is installed.
A Worktop should be protected when you are cutting it down.

You should make sure that sink retaining clips are all located and tted securely,
waste outlets should be bedded on clear silicone.
When completing the sink unit, please make sure that protection is applied to the stainless steel surface whilst further
work is being carried out. Sink tops should be bedded on a bead of clear silicone prior to tting.

5.5 Tiling
Wall tiling should be carried out in accordance with
British Standard 5385 and the manufacturers
recommendations for both the adhesive and the tiles.
Tiles should be xed to the backing with straight joints
on a combed bed of approved waterproof adhesive. The
correct size tile trim should be used on all exposed edges
including the window reveals and sill.
Joints between tiles should be lled solid with an
approved waterproof grout. The joints should be tooled
off and, on completion, all residual adhesive and grout
should be cleared off the tiles and surrounding surfaces.
Tiling must be set out with equal cuts at both ends not
smaller than 35mm. Window reveals should be set out
to accommodate an equal cut.
A small bead of white silicone should be applied to the
perimeter of the worktop in a uniform and consistent
manner.
Horizontal cut tiles must not be installed smaller than
35mm. Tile planning will need to take account of this.
Day 4
Where possible the tiling should be set out
central to the cooker space.
All tiling should be set out using 2mm tile spacers.

All cuts should be consistent and all tiles should be cut to the cabinets.
Ensure all tiles are cut neatly around socket outlets.
A silicone sealant must be applied. The kitchen tiling should look like this on completion.

5.5.1 Cabinet doors and drawers
Once the units are xed securely, the cabinet doors and drawers should be tted. Both doors and drawer frontals should
be fully adjustable and all gaps around the doors should be consistent.
Adjust hinge to ensure margins
are consistent.
All handles that need to be tted should be measured and marked out before hand.
Ensure that all handles are secured
using the correct screws and level.

5.5.2 Plinth
The plinth should be tted using the plastic clips supplied. You should allow 10mm tolerance from the oor to the
underside of the kitchen cabinet, which will allow for the Polysafe oor covering.
Plinth clips should be tted where possible to every cabinet leg and secured to the plinth using 16mm screws.
Plinths should be installed with an allowance for the oor covering.

5.5.3 Door replacements
Part of the kitchen rate will include either a full door replacement or an upgrade to an existing door to meet the current
re regulations.
Ensue all rebates are clean and tidy. Hinges must be installed with an intumescent pad behind each leaf. When using a
router you must ensure the correct PPE is worn and that you are working within a safe area.
Hinges and ironmongery should be installed using the screws provided. Intumescent seals need to be tted securely,
into a neatly routered groove.
Door stops should be glued and screwed every 300mm. All damage to architraves and frames should be repaired
accordingly and be left ready for decoration.
Handles should be tted using the
xings provided and will be free from
binding to operate with ease.

Day 5
5.6 Flooring
In most cases, the oor covering will be supplied and tted by one of our approved contractors and you will be required
to liaise with the contractor to agree timescales and access. We currently offer a choice of eight colours in the Polysafe
safety ooring range.
Annular ring shank nails to be used for xing plywood. Floor must be glued to plywood.
All joins must be welded. Finished oor area following installation
onto 4mm plywood.

Satisfaction and feedback
In addition to site inspections Viridian will be contacting
the customers regularly throughout the work to ensure
they are being kept up to date with the work and raise
any issues they may have. This information will be
passed to the Contract Administrator to resolve.
A satisfaction survey will carried out after work has been
completed. This information will be used to improve the
service and customer experience. Feedback on projects
will be shared with the Contact Administrator or Works
Manager to act upon if necessary.
