Informational Book Report


Due: September 22, 2014
The informational book report should identify two or more main ideas in the book you read and
include how the author supported these ideas with key details. The report should quote
accurately from the text to support your points. (CCSS 5.RI.1 & 2) Additionally, as you will be
determining word meaning through context clues. We will also be practicing this in class this
month. (CCSS 5.RI.5)

In order to reinforce the non-fiction/ informational reading and writing focus


in 5th grade, our next book report will be an informational book report. Please
follow the checklist below to help you complete this project. The Non Fiction
Book Report Form and Project are due September 22. Presentations of
projects will be done in class, September 25-26.
o Select a challenging non-fiction book you are interested in. Some ideas
are; history, sports, science, space, culture, geography, engineering,
animals, famous people, etc.). Approve the book with your teacher
before you begin reading.
o Take this packet home. Read through the entire packet with your
parents and discuss which project you will choose to accompany your
book report (see reverse).
o Read the book independently. As you read, use the attached Note Taking
form to help you keep track of information.
o Complete the attached Non-Fiction Book Report form. ALL ANSWER
MUST BE WRITTEN IN COMPLETE SENTENCES EXCEPT THE
VOCABULARY SECTION! CAPITALIZATION, PUNCTUATION, SPELLING,
AND NEATNESS COUNTS!

o Choose from the two options below and complete a project for your
book.
o Turn in the book report form on September 22nd and be prepared to
present your project.

Non-Fiction Book Project Choices


Directions: Select one of the projects below to complete as part of your
book report. Remember to be creative! You dont have to run out and buy a
bunch of stuff. You can get construction paper from your teacher, gather art
supplies from around the house, reuse an old item in a different way, etc.

Create an ABC Childrens Book

Create an information poster about your book with a


peek-through for your head. For example, if you are
doing a report about the solar system, you could make
your face one of the planets! Or, if you were doing a
historical report about the old west, you could draw a
scene of a western town with a hole for a cowboys

Note Taking Form

Identify two or more main ideas in the book you

Be prepared to share your poster while sticking
your head through the hole.

As you read, bullet point interesting facts about your topic. Remember, when taking notes,
you dont always have to use complete sentences.
Keep track of interesting vocabulary words and the page numbers on which they are found.

you about the topic? Why or why not? Support your opinion of the book
