Introduction
In a country like India we have a full-fledged mechanism to get a white collared job. Go to a
school, then your graduation, maybe post-graduation and then get placed. Though, the process is
not simple as it sounds but still we can say that this is a much organized sector as compared to
when one talks about blue collared jobs.
This specific sector is highly unorganized and laborers are generally at the plea of their
contractors who tend to underpay them while earning hefty amounts from the salaries these
contractors charge from the customers.

Primary Research
I worked with an NGO, Prayas Social Welfare Society (PSWS), in Faridabad for around 21 days.
They used to provide vocational training to people and were registered with the government of
Haryana, India for providing the same. Every six months they hire a new batch and students were
trained in various vocational courses such as beautician course, electrician, weaving and knitting,
data entry jobs, computer hardware repairing etc. Just like PSWS, there are thousands of NGOs
in India which provide such vocational courses.
The Big Question: Was this initiative adding value to the society?
Well when I personally had an interaction with the students undergoing the vocational
courses, they were highly demotivated. The main cause was that firstly, after completing the
course they did not know where to go, which companies to apply for, how to find the JOB.
Secondly, if by any chance they used to fix up an interview with some company they were asked
for reference or a bribe at the lower level to get them into jobs.
Overall, I found out that even though student were highly adept in their skills and gave their best
effort to find jobs but due to such high entry barriers in to the industry and such uncertainties
over their future, students were highly demotivated.

Challenges Faced
To find the root cause of the problem and have a look at the other side of the story, I contacted a
few employers. I arranged some interviews for the students. The feedback that I received from
the employers was that even though few students were good at functional abilities, there was a
lack of soft skills in them because of which the employers abstained from providing them
employment.
Also, there were many small scale firms and companies who were willing to provide
employment for the students but there was no formal channel at PSWS through which
employment could be generated.
The Idea
PSWS and other NGOs provide vocational training to the students at present but find it difficult
to provide them employment at the end of training. The idea is to generate direct employment
opportunities by a twofold strategy.
I propose to improvise on the teaching methodology being adopted at the NGOs. This can be
achieved by studying the present methodology of teaching and analyzing the gaps present in the
system. After this, standard improvised templates of course modules will be prepared and
teachers will be trained on these modules so that the teachers are able to deliver standard and
uniform content while teaching the students, unlike now when the teachers teach as per their
understanding and the course goes haphazard if the teachers are replaced in the middle of the
session.
Apart from the functional course modules, the training would also be based on developing the
soft skills and personality of the students. I plan to approach the companies (both large and
SMEs) and analyse their requirements and propose to provide them with high potential students
as employees. Based on the requirements of the companies, customized training would also be
provided to the students so that the students would be placed in those organisations.
We simultaneously plan to launch a web service portal wherein households and companies
would post their requirements. For example, we receive a request for an electrician from a house
located at sec 16, Faridabad or we get a requirement for 10 data entry operators for 2 months
from xyz limited. The students trained in various functions would get their work through this
portal.
Initially the web portal service would be marketed through word of mouth marketing and the
goodwill of the NGOs. After the first plan of tie-up with the companies gets fructified, they
would be encouraged to avail the service through web portal for easy access and to spread the
word.
We plan to train the students in the following courses:
Stitching and weaving
Basic software and data entry
Sales force
Hospitality
Beautician
Electrician
Home Science

Benefits of the project
The important stakeholders involved in this project are the NGOs (PSWS in our case),
Community and the firms and companies. The existing training facilities at the PSWS NGO will
be standardised and will be helpful in generating sufficient employment opportunities for the
students. The NGO would be raising funds by generating employment to the students. Also the
students who get jobs either in companies or through the web portal would be spreading the
initiatives undertaken by the NGO, as a result of which the awareness and goodwill of PSWS
will increase.
On successful implementation of the project, many vocational training students would find
meaning full jobs. As a result of this, the burden on their families would decrease and improves
their standard of living. The community as a whole would benefit through this because of better
employment opportunities.
There are many companies who would fail to find individuals with suitable requirements and
available at affordable salaries. By providing the students with customized training, it would be
possible to place the students in these companies. Also the households find it difficult to find
reliable and expert people for their requirements. The training and the portal would bridge these
gaps and result in a win-win situation.
The companies would reduce on their selection and recruitment costs because skilled individuals
would be employed by the companies through this process without any hiring cost and also the
need of training would be minimized because the students would already be trained in a
customized way as per companys needs. Also the companies may hire the individuals for
temporary services through the web portal.

Revenue and Net Income generation in future
Our revenue generation model will based on two things.
Firstly, when firms/ companies hire permanent professionals from our organization then we will
ask for a fixed amount of money per recruitment from them. For example ICICI Bank wants to
recruit 10 Data Entry people in the bank then we will ask the bank to pay us 10*5000 = INR
50000.
Secondly, whenever there is a job done on day to day basis. Then it will be a profit sharing
model i.e. 80:20. In which the employees would get 80% and we will get 20%. For example a
household calls for an electrician service. We send in our representative to their place. Suppose
the total worth of the work done is INR 1000. Our service person gets INR 800 and we as a
company get INR 200.
Like this I have estimated that if we train around 400 students spread across different domains in
our first batch and taking a prediction that out of 400 people trained we have 85% placement rate
and deducting the soft skill training cost, marketing cost, office rental cost, teachers cost,
uniform cost, administrative expenses and 10% contingency costs we will be earning an
approximate INR 900000 1000000 per batch i.e. every six months and the profit purely
depends upon increasing the economies of scale. Thus we can increase this exponentially going
forward.
Initial investment into the project is expected to be around INR 1600000.
Implementation Plan

Challenges that can be faced after successful implementation of the project
One big challenge that can be faced after successful implementation of the project is relocation. Will
students be ready to relocate for a job of INR 8000-10000 to Delhi, even if they get a job in a reputed
company like ICICI bank, just to take an example?
Will we have a single headquarter kind of thing from where we will be sending our employees on call
basis to cover the whole city?
The solution to this can be that we can ask people to manage the initial 6 months of their training to
come to PSWS headquarters because that is where all the equipment for hands on vocational training
are available. Also, we will not have to spend extra on infrastructure since PSWS anyways have it.
Secondly, based on the size of the city we can divide the city into 4 or 5 cells and one office for each cell.
All the students after completion of their training would be allocated to one of these cells, such that the
travelling time from their home can be minimized.
Once we receive a request for a particular service, suppose we get a call for an electrician from a
household, the location of the house and under which cell it falls would be located on spontaneous basis
and based on the information that particular cell will be informed to send the particular servicemen to
that house, an electrician as per this example.

Cost Benefit Analysis
The costs involved in the project mainly include the enhancement of the training for the students. This
would be done by incorporating soft skills and personality development programs. As many companies
are in need of skilled individuals, we believe it would be feasible to collaborate with them and provide
the employment at affordable salaries to the individuals. The marketing costs would not be high
because the word of mouth strategy would be followed to promote the web portal and the quality
services would be provided at affordable price for the households and corporates.
This social business model would function in the following way:
For the permanent employment in the companies, the individual would pay half of the salary in the
second and third months out of which one half would be taken by the entrepreneurs and the other half
would be given to the NGO for improving and developing their services. For employment provided
through the web portal service, for the first six months the employee would retain 60% of the earnings
and 20% of the earning would be given to the NGO and the rest 20% would be entrepreneurs earnings.
After the initial six months of employment, the employee would retain 80% of the earnings and would
give 20% of the earning to the entrepreneur. Through this way, this social business model may be made
viable and sustainable. Also, the individuals would spread awareness about the NGO and would help in
raising the funds for the NGO.
