From Camden County to Mt.
Laurel to the Pinelands, black
bears have been peeking their
heads out of the woods and caus-
ing a stir in South Jersey this
summer, including in Shamong.
As long as area residents follow
some simple rules after sighting a
bear, all should be well, according
to state and local officials.
A classic summer tradition,
camping in the woods, may not be
crashed by a sleuth of bears all
too often, but there are other
woodland creatures to keep an
eye out for, said state Department
of Environmental Protection
spokesman Larry Hajna.
Bold skunks and raccoons are
much more likely to raid a camp-
site in the search for food, Hajna
said.
They are typically the more
pesky critters, he said.
If a bear does walk into camp,
avoid eye contact, make some
noises and raise your arms to
look bigger.
You should make sure it has
an escape route, Hajna said. If
they feel cornered, it could create
a dangerous situation.
Animals are drawn to the scent
of food, he said, and keeping a
clean and tidy campsite is key to
avoiding unwanted encounters.
Clean grills, pots and pans
after use, Hajna said, and put
them in the car.
If you are in more of a wilder-
ness environment, purchase bear-
proof containers and bear bags
and hoist them into trees to deter
bears.
The DEPs website has a listing
of company suggestions, includ-
ing UnBearable Bins, BearGuard
and Bear Proofing-R-Us.
One black bear was sighted in
the woods of Shamong this year.
Bears are eating machines.
They like food, said Col. William
C. Lowe, Tabernacle Townships
emergency management coordi-
nator. They like it simple. They
prefer berries.
Most, however, roam through
Wharton State Forest, he said, out
of sight, out of mind.
Hajna said people should do
their homework before planning
their own camping adventure.

On the afternoon of July 31, the Pinelands Library was transformed into a chocolate factory as
Willy Wonka paid children a visit and offered a tour of his magical laboratory. Lucky for the kids, it
was not required for them to be quiet in the library on this day as laughing, screaming and dancing
were encouraged.

Col. John Rudman has served
his country as an Army officer
and the Shamong School District
as a teacher and publicity agent.
On July 13, he paid tribute to the
town that served as a home away
from home for his father during
World War II.
The city of Seaton, across the
pond in England, received a
bronze plaque paying tribute to
the resorts wartime support for
U.S. troops, marking the 70th an-
niversary of the Normandy land-
ings.
Rudman can remember the sto-
ries his father, Robert G. Rudman,
told of the kindness he and the
other troops received from the
townspeople of Seaton. The me-
morial, which also pays tribute to
the many brave Americans who
lost their lives in the assault, was
dedicated by John and his wife
Anita in a ceremony held in
Windsor Gardens in Seaton.

Be sure to leave proper
20 percent tip at restaurants
In your editorial: No need to increase
minimum wages for tipped workers, you
state, we're all for workers rights and
for equal and fair pay and for people
who work hard should be provided with a
good living. In this readers opinion, those
are just empty words.
The real economic world is very far from
providing millions of wage earners with
a good living wage.
You state the NJ Restaurant Association
opposes a minimum wage increase, which
is presently $2.13 per hour for tipped work-
ers. When has the restaurant association
ever supported a minimum wage increase?
The restaurant association president
states that tipped workers are guaranteed
to make at least the states minimum wage
of $8.25. If they make less than that in tips,
the employer is obligated to make up the
difference. Perhaps that may be true in a
perfect world, where most wage earners do
not live and work.
The big question is what restaurants be-
long to the NJ Restaurant Association?
Certainly not the ones where the majority
of tipped restaurant employees work.
Unfortunately, we are in a race to the
bottom, where $5 doesn't buy $4 anymore.
If we can't find the courage and decency
to raise the minimum wage for tipped
workers, then lets suggest when restau-
rant patrons go out to eat and get treated
with service and courtesy, please leave a
proper tip of 20 percent. So perhaps we can
get closer to the stated goal of equal and
fair pay for all workers.
Vincent Conigliaro
letter to the editor
T
he calendar just turned the
page to August, and here we
are, talking about November al-
ready. Were talking about Tuesday,
Nov. 4, to be precise. Thats the date for
the General Election this year.
Yes, temperatures may still soar to
the 90s outside right now, instead of
being in the 60s, 50s or maybe even
40s hopefully not as theyre likely to
be in November. Still, the time both we
as voters and the candidates them-
selves spend now determine what our
lives look like for the next four years.
This fall, there is no big name seat
up for election. Gov. Christie is firmly
entrenched into his post for another
few years, and a successor to President
Obama wont be selected until 2016.
In New Jersey, the two biggest elec-
tions will be for a U.S. Senate seat be-
tween Democrat Cory Booker and Re-
publican Jeff Bell, and a U.S. House of
Representatives seat (1st Congression-
al District) between Republican Garry
Cobb, Democrat Donald Norcross and
independent candidate Scot John
Tomaszewski.
But these elections are just as impor-
tant, if not more so, on a local level.
Throughout New Jersey, municipal
governing bodies and boards of educa-
tion will be holding elections to choose
new members to represent the town.
Mayors, councilmembers and school
board members often have a greater
impact on your daily life than your
governor and president.
The governor and president may be
the sexier post to vote for, but your
trash pickup, your property taxes and
your kids school curriculum has more
of an impact on your day-to-day life,
and those local post holders are the
ones who control those areas the most.
So just because you wont be voting
for the next governor or the next presi-
dent doesnt mean you shouldnt be in
tune with this Novembers elections
and this Novembers issues.
We at The Sun will be providing you
as much election coverage as we possi-
bly can this fall, especially when there
is a contested election at the municipal
level.
If your town has a contested munici-
pal election, expect a full, multi-week
Meet the Candidates series where well
provide you all the detailed informa-
tion about the election itself, as well as
profiles of the candidates and their
stances on the issues that are impor-
tant to you.
If you have any questions that youd
like us to ask the candidates, please
feel free to email us at the address to
the right.
So while you may still be making
trips to the beach and thinking about
back to school or the start of football
instead of heading to the polls, dont
fall behind on the issues at hand. What
happens behind those curtains in No-
vember could have a profound impact
on what happens in front of them for
the next four years.

The Lenape Regional High
School District recently an-
nounced the debut of Prepared to
Succeed.
This new feature on the dis-
tricts website showcases six out-
standing seniors from each of the
districts four high schools. These
students are highlighted on the
website with a profile and a short
video sharing their thoughts
about how the district has helped
them personally prepare for the
future.
Each year, district students
continue the rich tradition of ex-
cellence, which has been the cor-
nerstone for nearly 60 years. In re-
cent years, this history of produc-
ing successful students has been
highlighted with our alumni tele-
vision series Where Are They
Now? and through the Academic
Halls of Fame at each of our four
high schools.
Prepared to Succeed is another
way of spotlighting these success-
ful students.
District students are provided
with unlimited educational expe-
riences throughout their high
school career, which helps pre-
pare them to be successful in an
ever-changing world.
Our goal is to ensure students
utilize every opportunity avail-
able in LRHSD to support their
post-secondary goals, said Su-
perintendent of Schools Carol
Birnbohm. After graduation, we
expect students to continue to
place themselves in an environ-
ment where the opportunities are
as plentiful as those in LRHSD
and to make smart choices with
those opportunities.

3,000 pounds, is topped with a
bronze plaque, inscribed with
these words, On behalf of the
people of the United States of
America, this plaque was placed
here on June 6, 2014 to thank the
people of Seaton for all they did
for our soldiers and to commemo-
rate our father, First Sgt. Robert
G. Rudman and his best friend
Technical Sergeant Burton
Nicholls of H Company, and 2nd
Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment,
4th Infantry Division who left
these shores to be the first Allied
units on the beaches of Nor-
mandy France on D-Day, June 6,
1944. Many never returned to us.
Patriae Fidelitas (Loyalty to
Country.)
Robert did return home, marry
and start a family.
In a message to the people of
Seaton ahead of the ceremony,
Rudman expressed his heartfelt
thanks. The memorial pays trib-
ute to both the town as well as
those who were not lucky enough
to return home, John said. He had
acted as the driving force behind
giving Seaton this honor, as he
wanted to thank them for the
warmness they showed Ameri-
can troops.
The United States wishes to
thank you for all your efforts in
support of our soldiers prior to D-
Day, June 6, 1944. Specifically, the
people of Seaton are commended
for the following actions. You wel-
comed, housed and supported the
men of the 2nd Battalion, 8th In-
fantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Di-
vision from Jan. 1944 through
early June 1944, organized
dances, entertainment and
opened your homes to our sol-
diers. Took soldiers in and made
them part of your family, offered
all the resources of your town for
our soldiers needs, provided sup-
port for marksmanship training
alongside your home guard. You
provided a positive atmosphere
that resulted in no known record-
ed adverse incidents for the dura-
tion of their stay. Knowing that
many of the men of 2nd Battal-
ion, 8th Infantry Regiment might
not survive the coming invasion,
the people of Seaton gave some of
the fondest memories for those
soldiers prior to going into com-
bat. Your support was instrumen-
tal in the battalion, after being the
first to land on Utah Beach, at-
taining all their objectives in the
first few hours of Operation
Overlord, D-Day, June 6, 1944,
Rudman said.
MEMORIAL

Memorial pays tribute to town,
those who did not return home
Sometimes you want to sell your home quickly, and without all the

or just the desire to get the job done without having to fix all
that's wrong with your house. Either way, when you want to sell
quickly and as-is, give 302 Wholesale a call.
WE CAN COME SEE YOUR HOME AND MAKE AN OFFER FAST --
AN OFFER THAT IS ALL CASH, AND COMMISSION FREE,
