Shooting Mechanics

Perfect feet

Tuck the elbow near the body = load the elbow

Release the ball in one motion = lock the elbow

Elbow above the eye, ball to the sky!

The release must be the same after every shot

o 5 fingers at the rim or down at the ground, guiding hand should be
still

Maintain balance throughout the entire shot. Come straight up and straight
down.

Finishing Teaching Points

1. Hold the ball with your wrist directly behind it.

2. Your hands need to be flexible to be able to control the ball.

3. Form an L with your shooting hand and a T with the guide hand.

4. Start low and finish high.

5. Tuck the ball to your shooting side; its called private property.

6. Look the ball in and shoot it in one motion.

7. Keep your eyes on the glass when you finish.


Open Lay-up Series

1. Dance Steps without ball

Stance, step right, step left, jump off the left foot

Stance, step left, step right, jump off the right foot

Everything must be balanced!

2. Dance Steps with the ball

Stance, step right, step left, jump off the left foot, shot with the right
hand

Stance, step left, step right, jump off the right foot, shot with the left
hand

3. Dance Steps Off the Dribble

Dribble with the right hand, go, stop, plant the right foot, step left, jump
off the left foot, shot.

Dribble with the left hand, go, stop, plant the left foot, step right, jump
off the right foot, shot.

4. Finishing School

From the right, left foot forward, jump off left foot, shot with the right
hand off the backboard

From the left, right foot forward, jump off right foot, shot with the left
hand off the backboard

From the right, left foot forward, jump off left foot, shot with the right
hand off the rim

From the left, right foot forward, jump off right foot, shot with the left
hand off the rim

From the right, left foot forward, jump off both feet, shot with the right
hand off the backboard

right hand off the backboard

From the left, right foot forward, jump off both feet, reverse shot with the

6. NBA Lay-up Series

1. Foul line Drill

First person from the foul line extended takes one dribble, one-two
step, take off left foot then do a right handed lay-up. Gets his own
rebound. (can take off both feet)

As soon as the ball hits the net, second person explode to receive the
pass, no dribble, one-two step, take off left foot, right hand lay-up,
rebound, pass to the next person. (can take off both feet)

First person from the foul line extended takes one dribble, one-two
step, take off left foot then do a right handed reverse lay-up. Gets his
own rebound. (can take off both feet)

As soon as the ball hits the net, second person explode to receive the
pass, no dribble, one-two step, take off left foot, right hand reverse lay-
up, rebound, pass to the next person. (can take off both feet)

Ball cannot hit the ground!

2. 0, 1, 2, 3 Dribbles

Start at mid post, one-two step, take off left foot, right hand lay-up

Start at the foul line extended, one dribble, one-two step, take off
left foot, right hand lay-up

Start at the 3 point area, two dribbles, one-two step, take off left
foot, right hand lay-up

Start at the half court, 3-4 dribbles, one-two step, take off left foot,
right hand lay-up

Start at mid post, one-two step, take off right foot, left hand lay-up

Start at the foul line extended, one dribble, one-two step, take off
right foot, left hand lay-up

Start at the 3 point area, two dribbles, one-two step, take off right
foot, left hand lay-up

Start at the half court, 3-4 dribbles, one-two step, take off right foot,
left hand lay-up

3. 0, 1, 2, 2 Dribbles (Finish off Two Feet)

Do the series again jumping off both feet, right hand lay-up

Do the series again jumping off both feet, left hand lay-up

Minimize you dribble to maximize your moves!


7. Post Finishes

Drop step

o From the left mid post, drop left foot at the same time make one
dribble, take off both feet, right hand lay-up

o From the right mid post, drop right foot at the same time make one
dribble, take off both feet, left hand lay-up

Strong side turn

o From the left mid post, pivot to the left using left foot as pivot, take
right hand shot

o From the right mid post, pivot to the right using right foot as pivot,
take left hand shot

Turn Around Jumper

o Right Handed - From the right mid post, pivot to the left using left
foot as pivot, facing the basket, jump shot

o Left Handed From the left mid post, pivot to the right using right
foot as pivot, facing the basket, jump shot
