Current 8th Grade Parents: Help Support the IHS ex-
perience through the PTSO!
The PTSO is looking for Volunteers. Email us at
[email protected] or find us on Facebook Irmo High
School PTSO. The PTSO operates to help the school and the
faculty/staff, and you can be a part of that through a variety of ways. One big
event of ours is the Scholastic Book Fair, usually held in the last week of Octo-
ber. The students look forward to browsing through books intended for their
age and interests! We also help the faculty/staff celebrate goals achieved with the
students, such as PBIS celebrations and awards. Hospitality is an important way
that we help the teachers and staff feel supported and appreciated. Those are just
a few of the things we do.
Your commitment to supporting the PTSO would be welcome! Please join, mem-
bership is only $7. Also, please support our fundraising efforts, because all of the
money we raise goes back into the school and benefits students directly.

Tips for Summer Learning from
iAm School Counseling Department
1. Read Every Day
Take your kids to the library often and let them choose which books to check out. Listen to
books on tape. Subscribe them to a magazine. Take turns reading to each other. Allow
your kids to stay up a half hour later at night as long as they're reading.
2. Use Math Every Day
Practice the multiplication tables by making each point in a basketball game worth 7
points (or 8 or 9). Ask your kids to make change at the drive-thru. Make up math prob-
lems in the car or at the dinner table.
3. Get Outside and Play
Find ways to ensure your child is active for 60 minutes each day. Have him or her walk
the neighbor's dog, go swimming, play badminton or soccer, take walks, or go for family
bike rides. Look for safe, fun ways to get outside together year-round.
4. Write Every Week
Ask your child to write a weekly letter to his or her grandparents, relatives, or friends. En-
courage him to keep a summer journal. Have her write the family's grocery list. Organize
a secret pal writing project for adults and kids at your church or in your community.
5. Do a Good Deed
Encourage your child to help out neighbors or friends. He or she can volunteer with a local
group or complete a service learning project.
The above is adapted from a presentation by Brenda McLaughlin, Director of Research and Policy,
Center for Summer Learning, Johns Hopkins University and Jane Voorhees Sharp, Office of Early
Care and Education, New Jersey Department of Human Services.

Our District is joining a healthy, local food movement! Last November, District Five was the only school dis-
trict in SC chosen to receive a Farm to School Implementation Grant. With this funding, the Office of Student
Nutrition is working hard to bring locally grown produce to our cafeterias, start school gardens and help
teachers integrate nutrition and agriculture into existing curriculum.
We are so excited to pilot Farm to Five at Dutch Fork Elementary, HE Corley Elementary, Leaphart Elemen-
tary, Seven Oaks Elementary, Irmo Middle School, Spring Hill High School and the Center for Advanced
Technical Studies. While the program has not officially begun, we have been busy planning and preparing
and wanted to share some of our accomplishments before Summer Vacation begins!
Raised Beds are Ready This spring, a group of eight CATS students built and installed 17 raised garden
beds! We recognize Luis Arredondo, Christopher Boatwright, Nathan Forres-
tor, Chandler French, Kaley Knowlton, Daniel McDermott, Thomas Sterling,
Jacob Whilidal and their teacher, Mr. Kevin Sox, for their excellent craftsman-
ship and diligence.
Spotlighting IMSIrmo Middle School's green-
house will be an area of focus for Farm to
Five. Next school year, the greenhouse will be certi-
fied in the production of tomatoes. Those tomatoes will be sold to the district and
served in school cafeterias. Outside of the greenhouse there are eight raised
beds. Produce in those beds are already being sold to teachers during "Fresh Fri-
day" lunches! In addition, Challenging Horizons Program and IHS International
Baccalaureate students will be helping to maintain the greenhouse and its grounds
this Summer.
W.P. Rawl Field Trip On May 20, we took 14 students on a field trip to W.P.
Rawl & Sons, Inc. Students spent the morning learning about irrigation, plant-
ing in raised beds, maintaining school gardens, and organic farming. Having
gone on the field trip, these students are now Farm to Five ambassadors at
their school. They will be in charge of their school garden and Farm to Five
efforts at their school.
Farm to Five Art Contest Congratulations to Daniel La-
valle a 4th grader at Leaphart Elementary. Daniel is the
winner of our first Farm to Five Art Contest! Elementary
students (K-5th grade) were asked to create a piece of art
depicting elements of SC Agriculture. We were pleased that Daniel incorporated many
aspects of agriculture and the D5 logo!
Field Day Taste Test SuccessWe had our first, large-scale, Farm to Five
taste test this May. An overwhelming majority of students at Dutch Fork Elemen-
tary agreed they love locally grown, Cottle Farms, strawberries! Surprisingly, for
some students this was their first time trying strawberries.
