COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES
As it is already common known that the adjective is the word that describe to the
name or noun. Adjectives in English are not placed in plural, that is, that both in
singular and plural they remain the same. And they are used both for masculine and
for feminine.
The rules for the comparatives are the following:
1. For an adjective with a vowel in the middle, the last consonant is doubled and it
is added ER at the end of the word.

o Big (big) grande bigger (bguer) ms grande
o Hot (jot) caliente hotter (joter) ms caliente

2. For the adjectives ending in Y but there is a consonant before, change Y by
IER.

o Happy (jpi) feliz happier (jpier) ms feliz
o dirty (dri) caliente dirtier (drier) ms sucio
o easy (si) fcil easier (sier) ms fcil
o fussy (fsi) exigente fussier (fsier) ms exigente
o cosy (kouzi) acogedor cosier (kousier) ms acogedor (BrE)
o cozy (kouzi) acogedor cozier (kousier) ms acogedor (AmE)
o Pretty (prri)bonito-a- prettier (prrier) ms bonito-a-

3. There are others adjectives that dont respect any rules, therefore their spelling
is different from the original adjective.

o Good (gud) bueno better (brer) mejor
o bad (bad) malo worse (wors) peor
o far (far) lejos farther (frder) ms lejos
o little (ltl) poco less (les) menos

o much (mach) mucho more (mor) ms
4. To be able to draw comparisons to the comparative adjective we use the word
than.Than (dan) que .
Example:
o Susan is nicer than Wendy.
Susan es ms simptica que Wendy.
o Huacho is warmer than Lima.
Huacho es ms clido que Lima.
5. There are some comparative adjectives that, due to their structure of one or
two syllables, are compared to placing the word more or less before the
adjective.

o Beautiful (biriful)Hermosa-o more Beautiful (mor biriful ) ms
Hermosa-o-
o Expensive (xpnsiv) caro more expensive (mor xpnsiv) ms
caro
o Polite (polit) corts more polite (mor polit) ms corts
o Wonderful (wnderful) maravilloso less wonderful (les wnderful) ms

o Pessimistic (pesimstic) pesimista less pessimistic (les pessimistic) mnos
pesimista

1. Roses are more beautiful than daisies
2. This car is more expensive than that car.
3. Lesson one is easier than lesson twelve.
4. My dog is bigger than yours.
5. Peter is a better pupil than Robert.
6. The cake I made yesterday was worse than the cake I made today.
