It has just passed 50 years since the first tunes of the incomparable
qualities of human voice filled the auditorium of the Bla Bartk Choir
Competition. The very first time This magical experience has echoed
24 times since then in the music halls and on the streets of Debrecen.

In 2011 we worthily celebrated the 50th anniversary of the competition,

reviving the 1961 opening concert by performing the large-scale
oratorical panorama of Sndor Szokolay, written on the lines of ancient
Babylon myth by Sndor Weres the ever changing yet always the same
kind of battle between light and Abyss.
Similarly to Ishtar, the competition had its sharp turns but eventually it
could overarch decades and ideologies by sticking to its core principles: to
popularize high-level collective singing and vocal folk music, to promote
the meeting of composers and choral singers of different nationalities
and to strengthen the relationship between contemporary music and the
general public.
2011/12 is a focal point for Debrecen: the city was established 650 years
ago, the local music education is 150 years old and Zoltn Kodly, who
had strong ties in so many ways with the music life of the region, was
born 130 years ago.
Here we are, proud as ever being not only spectators of this life enriching
event, but through the Ministry of Human Resources, active supporters
of the cause of music. May this competition carry on with the clear
guidelines of the ancestors but let it be brave enough to break for new
boundaries. Long live the human voice!

The assiduous work of the last fifty years leads the enthusiastic audience
of contemporary choir music into the city of Debrecen for the 25th time
this year. The leaders of the city created the Bla Bartk International
Choir Competition in 1961 on the initiative of the legendary Gyrgy Gulys. To date the competition has earned a prestigious place in the
international musical life.

Debrecen welcomed tens of thousands of singers during the years and

they performed countless contemporary pieces. Among them were some
world premieres, which more often than not were performed by the citys
professional choir and philharmonic orchestra named after Kodly. This
year we celebrate the 130th anniversary of Kodlys birth. His masterpieces
frame the program of the competition. Besides the passionate Psalmus
Hungaricus the event will offer the opportunity to listen to a previously
unknown late masterpiece called The Music Makers. The curiosity of
this performance is that it will be conducted by the same Lszl Heltay
who was the conductor of its world premiere in Oxford in 1964.
In a couple of days the winners of the competition will be announced. This
is already a success story for the Hungarian music scene as the choirs
have mastered twelve Hungarian choir pieces. Besides these works the
singers will perform their own national pieces, thus portraying vividly the
worlds choral art. Finally, I take my leave for you with the words of Kodly.
This Latin salute was meant for the newly founded choir competition in
1961 but now may it go for all the artists and for those whose everyday life
is intrinsically filled with music.
Vivat, crescat, floreat! May it live, grow and flourish!

Kollgiumnak tagja, 2000-tl a Magyar Hangversenyrendezk Egyesletnek trselnke. Munkssgt 2005-ben Debrecen Kultrjrt kitntetssel ismertk el.
Mrta Aradi graduated from Lajos Kossuth University Debrecen with a
degree in cultural management. She also studied music in Pannonhalma and Gyr. Mrs Aradi served as the artistic secretary of Kodly Choir
Debrecen (1971-1978), worked as the music consultant of Klcsey Cultural
Centre (1980-89) and was head of the Debrecen bureau of Hungarian State
Philharmonia (1989-98). She has been involved in organising the Bla Bartk International Choir Competition since 1974 - initially as secretary of
the jury, later as artistic secretary, finally as its director. She was a member
of the Music College of the National Cultural Fund (2000-2005), and serves
as co-president of the Association of Hungarian Concert Organisers (since
2005). She received a For the Culture of Debrecen Prize in 2005.

kamaradarab, hangszerszl, dalok, kamarazenekari, zenekari darabok,
s kt kantta) jelents helyet foglalnak el krusmvei, elssorban a latin
szvegekre komponlt vegyeskarok. Zeneszerzi tevkenysgrt 1986ban Erkel Ferenc djat, 1996-ban Bartk-Psztory djat kapott.
He studied composing at the Bla Bartk Specialised School of Music in Budapest (1973-1977) and Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest (19771982) under Mikls Kocsr, Rezs Sugr and Emil Petrovics. Currently he
is professor of composition and musicology at the Bla Bartk Specialized
School of Music in Budapest and at the Bla Bartk Conservatory of the
University of Miskolc. His most outstanding works in addition to chamber
music, solos, songs, orchestra pieces and two cantatas are his choral
works, particularly those composed for mixed choirs in Latin. He is the
recipient of the Ferenc Erkel Prize (1986) and the Bartk-Psztory Prize
(1996).

Versenyn 2007 mrciusban a kznsgdjat s a legjobb magyar rsztvevnek jr klndjat is elnyerte, s a dntben alkalma nylt veznyelni a
Magyar Rdi nekkart. A kvetkez vben hat hnapot tlttt Knban,
ahol a pekingi Kzponti Zeneakadmia krusait vezette, valamint karvezetst s kamaraneket tantott. 2009 sztl a Debreceni Kodly Krus vezet
karnagya.
Pad Zoltn is one of the most talented conductors of his generation. He
began his studies at the Liszt Ferenc Music Academy but having won a
scholarship he went on studying at the University of Music and Performing
Arts, Munich, working with Michael Glser and Max Frey. Since 2005, he has
been working as a teacher in Kecskemt at the Kodly Zoltn Pedagogical
Institute of Music. In 2007, he won the Audiences Choice and the Award
for the Best Hungarian Participant at the 4th International Competition for
Young Choral Conductors. He spent the following year in China where he
conducted choirs of the Central Conservatory of Music Beijing - he also
taught vocal chamber music and choral conducting. In autumn 2009, he
became the choral director of the noted Kodly Choir Debrecen.

Klmn Strausz studied at the Ferenc Liszt Music Academy under Istvn Prkai
and Zoltn Vsrhelyi. He worked first as music editor at the Hungarian Radio,
later as head of the classical music section of the Hungarian Television. He was
the director of Budapest Youth Choir from 1977 while teaching conducting at the
Budapest Music Academy. He was director of the world-famous Kodly Choir of
Debrecen between 1984 and 1991 and founded the Budapest International Choir
Competition in 1988. He was the director of the Hungarian Radio and Television
Mixed Choir between 1992 and 2008. Today he is the head of Honvd Male Choir
and the Budapest Studio Choir. He was awarded Liszt Prize in 1997 and was
nominated for two Grammys in 1998. He is a constant jury member of several
international choir competitions across Europe.

Mt Szab Sipos - born in Budapest in 1964 - began his musical

studies as a pianist. In 1985 he enrolled at the Ferenc Liszt Academy
of Music where he first graduated as a choral conductor and teacher
of musicology. In 1995 he also received a summa cum laude degree
in Ervin Lukcss class as an orchestral conductor. Since 1994 he has
been teaching conducting practice at the Hungarian Academy of Music.
He is the leader of the Eger Symphony Orchestra and has worked with
a number of well-known choirs and orchestras both in Hungary and
abroad. Between 2000 and 2003 he was the artistic director of the Debrecen Kodly Choir. Currently he is chorus-master and conductor of
the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest.

Peter Broadbent is one of Britains leading choral conductors. In 1988 he
formed the Joyful Company of Singers, one of Europes leading chamber
choirs, which has won an impressive list of National and International
Competitions. Broadbent enjoys a versatile career with an extensive
repertoire ranging from Baroque Music performed on period instruments,
to contemporary music, including many first performances. In the UK
he has conducted many of the leading orchestras and the BBC Singers
and also the World Youth Choir in 2006 in Italy, Switzerland, Belgium and
Germany. He is director of Choral Conducting Courses for the Association
of British Choral Directors. He was recently presented with the Pro
Cultura Hungarica award for services to Hungarian choral music.

Mykola Gobdych graduated as conductor at Kiev Conservatoire in 1985. He

became the conductor of the L. Revuckij Male Choir in 1983 than he was
appointed to lead the National Choir of Ukraine Dumka in 1984. He was
the founder of the Kiev Chamber Choir in 1991. Since then this group has
earned great reputation and international fame. (Zwickau, Hajnowka, Sligo,
Llangollen) They have already participated in more than 30 international
festivals, performed 1000 concerts in 21 countries.
In 1997 he established the Golden-domed Kyiv Choral Fest and directed it
till 2010. Besides several international awards and jury memberships he
receive the state award of merit of Ukraine.

Hungarian State Opera, with a two-act opera called A Glyakalifa. In 2006
he won the first prize in the composers competition of AGEC with his motet
Te Lucis ante terminum. Gyngysi composes pieces for several ensembles
home and abroad. His first authors album was released by Hungaroton in
December 2007. Since 1999 he has been a permanent member of the Orfeo
Orchestra led by Gyrgy Vashegyi.. He has been awarded several prizes,
including the Erkel Ferenc Prize in 2005, Talentum Artistic Award in 2008
the Youth of March Award (2009), and the Bartk-Pasztory Award in 2009.

Harald Jers graduated in conducting, school music, solo-singing and physics.

He has cooperated with conductors such as Frieder Bernius, Eric Ericson
and Helmuth Rilling as well as with various composers. He is lecturer at the
Cologne College of Music and at several music academies in conducting, singing and voice training. He is often a jury member at various international choral
competitions. He is the founder of chamber choir CONSONO which quickly
developed into the field of the best choirs in Germany. Their outstanding
qualities were confirmed by many first prizes at several national and
international choir competitions (Marktoberdorf, Maasmechelen, Cork, Gorizia,
Debrecen) and numerous CDs and radio recordings. In 2010 CONSONO was the
Grand Prize winner of the Bla Bartok 24th International Choir Competition.

Ura Lah studied musical education at the Ljubljana Music Academy.

She perfected her conducting skills at the musical Conservatorium
in Troms, Norway in the class of maestro Ragnar Rasmussen and
on educational seminars organised by choral associations IFCM and
Europa Cantat. Between 1993-2009 she was in charge of the artistic
leadership of the Mixed Youth Choir Veter (Jeunesses Musicales Ljubljana), with which she won many prizes at competitions in Slovenia
and Europe. From 1998-2002 Ura Lah was also the conductor of
the National Radio Chamber Choir with which she had several first
performances of works by contemporary Slovenian composers.
In the years 2002-2009 she was the chief conductor and artistic
director of APZ Tone Tomi University of Ljubljana.

Sapszon Ferenc graduated as a conductor at the Liszt Academy of Music in

During these years he founded Jubilate Childrens Choir which has gradually
reached the frontline of Europes children choirs. In 1988 he founded the
Zoltn Kodly Hungarian Choir School which has been directed by him ever
since. In 1996 he founded Cantate Mixed Choir from former students of the
choral school. For decades, Sapszon Ferenc taught choir conducting at major Hungarian Universities. His greatest awards are: Artisjus award, Liszt
Prize, Hungarian Heritage Prize, Knights Cross of the Order of Merit of the
Republic of Hungary.

Csaba Somos received his first musical influences and spent his secondary
school years here in Debrecen. He graduated both as choral and orchestral
conductor at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, Budapest. He was
conductor of the Vass Lajos Choir of Vasas Ensemble between 1992 and
2010. He is founder and leader of the Vass Lajos Chamber Choir. He was
conductor and music director of Csokonai Theatre Debrecen and held the
same position at the National Theatre of Pcs for three years. Since 2009
he has been principal conductor of the Hungarian Radio Chorus. He also
worked with the Sakata Philharmonic Orchestra (Japan) as well as the
Philharmonics of Salerno (Italy). As a chorus conductor he had several
concerts in Spain, Russia, Italy, Romania, Germany, Austria and Greece. In
2002 he was awarded the Rubnyi Vilmos Prize.

Philippos Tsalahouris was born in 1969, in the town of Camina (Congo), where
his parents worked at the time. He went to school and grew up in Athens,
Greece. Mr. Tsalahouris studied flute and Advanced Theory of Music at the
National Conservatoire, Athens, Greece. He received his degree in composition
from the Kodly conservatoire and attended numerous seminars on the Kodly
system in Hungary. Tsalahouris is one of the most prolific and active Greek
composers of his generation. His works include 4 Symphonies, 3 one-act
operas, several concertos and concertinos, 3 string quartets, several choral
works, etc. He has taught for 5 years at the National Conservatoire and for 15
years at the Drama School of the Art Theatre. He has also been teaching at the
Kodly Conservatoire since 1992 and at the Athens Conservatoire since 2004.

2006 gnes Trk was the deputy conductor of Kodly Choir Debrecen
being the choir-master of several oratorios and operas also conducting
a cappella concerts. She is often invited to Toyama Prefecture, Japan
as a conductor and to several international choir competitions as a jury
member. She is the artistic secretary of the Conducting Masterclass at
the Bla Bartk International Choir Competition.

Cantilene is a mixed choir of enthusiastic young singers. It was founded in

1977 as a member of the C-Koren choir family in Ekeren (part of Antwerp),
Belgium. Today the choir family consists of 8 members covering all age
groups and having over 380 singers of various musical backgrounds.
The mixed choir has been conducted by Luc Antonis since 1980. Under
his guidance the choir has achieved great successes all over Europe. They
have performed in 12 countries of the continent. In 2003 they won the
Konsinjoorkes competition in Kontich (Belgium).

as one of Canadas premier youth choirs. Shallaway teaches the value

Chamber Choir Hymnia was formed in 1983 and consists of 25 singers.

Under the musical leadership of Flemming Windekilde the choir has
established itself as a substantial and acknowledged part of the Danish
choir elite, giving many concerts and participating in festivals and
competitions abroad where the choir has won numerous prizes.
The choir has released several CDs: French Choir Music (1994), Figure
Humaine (1999), Tid og Rum (2000), Requiem (2000) Waterworks (2006),
late Romantic German music (2008).
Hymnia has specialized in performing new and often very complex
compositional music. Their repertoire includes 20th century and rarely
performed a cappella works. The choir emphasizes working with Danish
composers and has presented much contemporary Danish music
including several first performances over the years.

The Female Choir of the Bartk Bla Music Institute of the University of
Miskolc was founded in 1987 as the practice choir of the institution. Since
then it has played an active role in the music life of the city. Its activities
are confirmed in several radio recordings and performances at national
and international concerts. The choirs a cappella repertoire reaches
from the Renaissance to the 20th century and they are often involved in
oratorical performances. The choir master is Zoltn Sndor, a tutor at the
mother institute. On their very first international competition, the choir
won the female choir as well as the church music category in Fivizzano,
Italy. One year later, in 2002, the choir also came first in the equal voices
category at the Bla Bartk 20th International Choir Competition.

The buda Chamber Ensemble was formed from the members of the
buda Chamber Choir in 2011 under the guidance of kos Erds. Not
long after their formation the ensemble won first prize in their category
at the Budapest International Choir Competition.
Their repertoire covers a wide period between the Renaissance and
the 20th century with an emphasis on contemporary Hungarian pieces.
They also wander to the field of folk arrangements and popular music

Chorus Oeconomicus, the predecessor of Prelude Mixed Choir, founded
under the leadership of Sndor Kabdeb in 1991.
Among their achievements, they are particularly proud of the following:

The choir of the Zoltan Kodaly Secondary School of Music has a

respectable history. It was formed as a female choir by Gyorgy Gulyas
in the 2nd part of the 1950s. Soon it had success at several national and
international competitions as a mixed choir.
The choir has been led by Monika Vegh since 2004. Besides their concert
and competition programmes they also take part in several city events,
performing oratorios, sometimes world premires. They participate in
national conducting courses and help university students as a training
choir.

The Student Choir of Universitas Indonesia PARAGITA was founded

in 1983. Paragita has collaborated with choirs and orchestras such
as the choir of Oxford University Schola Cantorum of England, Vienna
Symphony Orchestra of Austria, Twilite Orchestra, Nusantara Chamber
Orchestra, Cisya Kencana Orchestra, Erwin Gutawa Orchestra and so
on. In order to measure its capability, Paragita always joins festivals or
competitions. Their first international accomplishment was achieved in
the Netherlands International Choir Festival, Arnhem in 1995 (fifth place
for Small Mixed Choir Category). They then successfully earned the first
prize in the folk category of the 1996 Internationaler Chorwettbewerb
in Miltenberg, Germany. In 2002 the choir was awarded with silver medal
in two categories: Folklore with instrument accompaniment and Mixed
Chamber Choir at the 2nd Choir Olympics, Busan, Korea. The choir had
also A Winter to Remember, Indonesia-Japan Concert at Gifu Perfecture
Japan in 2003. The last achievement of the choir was a 1st prize in Mixed
Choir category of ITB Choir Festival XXII 2010, Bandung. Paragita also
won the 1st prize of the 46th Internationaler Chorwettbewerb 2009 in
Spittal / Drau, Carinthia, Austria, for the category A - Kunstlied (Classic
category) and 3rd prize for category B Volksied (Folksong category).

Gracioso Sonora Choir was founded in 1999 by Amanda Hasibuan and

Budi Susanto Yohanes. The choir unites young singers selected mainly
from universities and high schools in Malang, East Java. The choir has a
special focus on the Indonesian folksongs and performs choral works in
a wide range of styles and periods. Gracioso Sonora Choir sings regularly
at services in churches, holds regular concerts or concert tours at least
twice a year, and has been well-received at performances in Singapore,
South Korea, Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain.
They have won several prizes in national and international competitions: in
2010 the choir earned the 1st prize for Mixed Choir Category and 2nd prize
for Folksong Category in Miltenberg Internationaler Chorwettbewerb

A youthful passion combined with sensuous musicalitythese are the

qualities that best define the youth choir Kamr..., founded in 1990 by
conductor Mris Sirmais. Since 2012 the choirs conductor has been
Jnis Liepi. In recent years Kamr... has worked with programmes
specially commissioned for the choir building up a unique repertoire
of music. The choirs biggest project to date has been The World Sun
Songs, which featured seventeen new choral works by a number of
world-famous composers. Other important works include two pieces
specially commissioned for the choirs twentieth anniversary: Lga
Celmas oratorio Jersikas derba (The Jersika Testament) and the concert
programme Mlas madrigli (Love Madrigals), consisting of new pieces by
eight contemporary Latvian composers. Conveying emotions as well as
performing with the highest vocal quality are of equal importance for the
choir. This is also expressed by the ellipsis encoded in the choirs name,
Kamr, which means while in English. While we are still young, anything
is possible

Youth Choir Cantabile is a group formed in 2009 by the young conductor

Elena Marian at the Academy of Economical Studies of Moldova. The
choir is made up of talented students who truly love choral art.
In less than a year Cantabile impressed the management of the
institution as well as musical personalities from Chiinu, with their
outstanding performances. Its repertoire includes works of national as
well as international composers from various stylistic periods.
In 2010, the choir was invited to participate, as a special guest, at the
Romanian Cultural Days, held at the National Bank of Romania. The
choir participated in several national and international festivals: National
Festival La Izvoare (2010); International Festival of Choral MusicA Ruginit
Ffunza Din VII (3rd place 2010); National Christmas Festival Carols
(2010). The most notable performance of the Choir is the participation at
the 1st International Choral Contest Voci di Europa (Italy, 2010), winning
the Peoples Choice Award. In 2011, the choir was invited, as a special
participant to the International Choir Festival Universitas Cantat, held in
Poznan (Poland).

Chamber choir GNEIS was founded in 2005 by their conductor, Tore Kloster.
The principle aim of the choir is to perform music by living composers from
western Norway. This has not however precluded the choir from working
with and presenting repertoires from other periods and nationalities.
Knut Vaage, Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen and Magnar m are amongst the
Norwegian composers showcased by GNEIS. The majority of activity is in
and around the city of Bergen. In 2009 the choir travelled to Spain on its first
overseas tour participating in the Tolosa International Choir Competition.
Tore Kloster is a freelance choir conductor and singer educated at the
Grieg Academy (Bergen) and the Royal Academy of Music(London).

Under the guidance of founder and conductor Edgardo L. Manguiat, the

UP Singing Ambassadors (UPSA) has become one of the finest choirs
in the Philippines today, with numerous prestigious prizes and acclaims
in international choral competitions. Its triumph at the most prestigious
Guido dArezzo Polyphonic Competition (2001) in Italy, qualified the choir
to compete at the 14th European Grand Prix for Choral Singing in 2002.
UPSA has participated in festivals and prestigious international choral
competitions winning top prizes in Italy, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia,
Switzerland, Spain, Wales, Hungary, France, Bulgaria, Germany, Belgium
and in the Netherlands. Their repertoire is extremely varied, ranging from
renaissance music to contemporary pieces.
In its 31st year, this amateur choir with professional ambitions and an

Puellae Orantes Cathedral Girls Choir was established in 1985 by the

conductor Rev. Wadysaw Pachota. Members of the choir are girls
aged 1019. The choir participated in several competitions, festivals
and received numerous awards and special mentions. Puella Orantes
is considered to be Polands most successful girls choir, being awarded
first prizes in all the most important choir competitions home and
abroad: 4th European Competition of Cathedral Choirs (2000, France)
1st prize, 50th European Festival of Young Musicians (2002, Belgium) 1st
prize, 52nd Polyphonic Competition - Guido dArezzo (2004, Italy) 1st prize,
33rd International May Choir Competition prof. Georgi Dimitrov (2011,
Bulgaria) 2nd prize. Puellae Orantes competed for the Grand Prix in
Arezzo (2004) as well as in Varna (2011).
The choir made several recordings for the Polish Television, the Polish
Radio, France 2 and France 3 channels of the French Television, Vatican
Radio, as well as the Dutch and French Radios.

Laureate of international and Russian choral contests and festivals

Academic choir Mlada was founded in 1989 in Perm Children Musical
School. The choir tours actively both in Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg)
and abroad (France, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Italy, Poland). In their
repertoire there are more than 200 works from different styles and eras:
Russian spiritual music, classic European pieces, transcriptions of
Russian folk music, choral transcriptions of classical as well as modern
popular, instrumental and jazz music. Since their formation they have
performed more than 20 thematic concert programmes, have made CD
and DVD recordings. A wide stylistic palette allows Mlada to communicate
in the language of music practically with any audience, irrespective of the
level of listeners experience, age and musical tastes. Olga Vyguzova, the
art director and founder of Mlada is a professional conductor with choral
and vocal education, pedagogical experience and large performance
practice. Mlada is considered to be symbol of the Perm region and often
participates in Russian as well as international festivals and competitions.
Olga Vyguzova has a rich creative intuition, artistic vein and a sense of
style that have allowed her to create original choral concert programmes.

This girls choir is part of El Len de Oro, a choral project born in

Luanco (Asturias, Spain) more than a decade ago currently having about
120 singers. Aurum was formed at the beginning of 2012 consisting of
girls between 12 and 20 years old that have been or still are singers in
the childrens choir Los Peques del Len de Oro, which has won several
prestigious national and international awards during the last few years.
Aurums goal is to offer these young women a continuation of their
choral life, either in Aurum or in the mixed voices adult choir El Len de
Oro, with which they often collaborate, especially in symphonic-choral
music. Aurum has been invited to the August 2012 Guido dArezzo Choir
Competition (Italy), though the choirs official international dbut will take
place at the Bla Bartk International Choir Competition in Debrecen,
Hungary, during the coming month of July.

The group aims to provide choral training for children with the goal of
creating a junior choir within the framework of the choral project El Len
de Oro. It currently has 50 singers and a wide and stylistically varied
repertoire. Since its earliest years the group has been invited to take
part in numerous choral festivals in the region, as well as in prestigious
national competitions. They have won first prizes in various national
contests such as Oviedo, Avils, Totana, Torrevieja (2004 and 2008), and
fourth prize at international level in Varna (Bulgaria) and in Tolosa in 2010,
as well as a brilliant second prize in Tolosa 2011.
They have worked with professional orchestras in Asturias (Oviedo
Filarmona, Orchestra of Los Adioses) performing works such as the
St Matthew Passion by J. S. Bach, or the recording of Verdis Othello, with
the Donostiarra Choral Society. They have also performed with the adult
choir El Len de Oro on the recording of their two CDs, Lux Aurumque
(2003) and Paxarines (2009).

Traditions of concert choir singing in Kharkiv philharmonic date back

to the 1930s. The history of the current group began in 1980, due to
the initiative of one of the most outstanding figures of the Vyacheslav
Palkin National conductor-Choir school. His performances became a
considerable phenomenon in the music life of the city, beginning from
his first concert (January, 1981). The Choir has toured Kyiv, Moscow,
Moldova, Latvia, and the USA. They managed to get a philharmonic status due to their intensive concert activity, professional performers and
great repertory. The choir has taken part in many art events like the
International contest Khainovski dni tserkovnykh pisnespiviv (Poland,
2006, 2009, 2011 Grand-prix of the Festival).

Sacred Music ChoirFestival & Competition Laudate Dominum, Lithuania.
The repertoire of the choir includes spiritual, classical and contemporary
music as well as folk song arrangements.

The choir was formed in 2008 and enjoys the support of the Ukrainian
Cultural Centre. Folklore programmes, classical choral works, sacred
music are included in the choirs repertoire. The choirs mission is to
revive and nurture the rich Ukrainian traditions of choral singing. They
have organized more than 35 performances since their foundation.
They have won several awards: 2011 International Competition South
Palmira (Ukraine): Grand Prix, 50th International Competition Seghizzi
(Italy): Special prize Best Equal Voices Choir, 3rd prize in category

The UD CHORALE is among the most highly regarded college choirs in

the Eastern United States. In recent years, the choir has been invited to
perform on both regional (Pittsburgh, 2002 and Hartford, 2008) and national
(Los Angeles, 2005 and Dallas, 2013) conventions of the AmericanChoral
Directors Association (ACDA). They have also performed at Carnegie
Hall in New York and Verizon Hall in Philadelphias Kimmel Center for
the Arts. In addition to annual regional tours, the Chorale has travelled
extensively throughout Europe. In 2007, the Chorale competed in the
Tallinn International Choral Competition they were recipients of the first
place Grand Prix award. In June 2009, they were invited on a performance
tour of China where they were featured in several collaborative concert
appearances in Shanghai and Beijing. The Chorale was a featured choir
in a master class with Helmuth Rilling at the February 2010 ACDA
Conference, and won three second-place awards and a third-place award
at the 42nd International Tolosa Choral Contest in Spain. In summer 2012,
the UD CHORALE has been invited to perform at the 30th International
Society for Music Education World Conference in Thessaloniki, Greece.
Chorale members are also part of the larger symphonic chorus that
performs regularly with the Delaware Symphony Orchestra.

UD-17, the University of Delawares premiere vocal chamber ensemble,

is a select 17-voice choir. Formed in 2009, the ensemble performs
imaginative, innovative programming of a cappella and accompanied
sacred and secular works spanning five centuries, with a strong
commitment to performing contemporary and Renaissance repertoire.
UD-17 makes frequent appearances throughout the mid- Atlantic region.
In its first international performance, the ensemble took second place
awards in both categories in which it competed at the 42nd International
Tolosa Choral Contest in Spain. Members are also part of the larger UD
CHORALEa nationally and internationally recognized group renowned
for musical excellence.

1. Composition of the juries

1.1
A versenyprogramokat 5-5 fs nemzetkzi zsri rtkeli, kzlk egy f

Bizottsg egy tagjnak vezetsvel.

1.1.
Performances at the competition shall be evaluated and adjudicated by
international juries of 5 members each, one of whom is the President.
Performances for the Grand Prize will be evaluated by a full jury including
all jury members headed by a member of the Artistic Board.

1.2

The composition of the juries will be determined by the Artistic Board.
Each jury shall have a secretary.
1.3.
Members of the international jury shall carry out their work in accordance
with the Competition Announcement. In disputable cases, the standpoint
taken by the Artistic Board shall be followed.
2. The work of the jury and the rules of scoring points
2.1
At the first meeting of the jury, the Director of the Competition will present
the rules of the competition as defined in the Competition Announcement.
2.2
In the work of evaluation/adjudication, the following issues shall be
considered by the juries:
a) fidelity to the score
b) the richness of choral articulation
c) artistic achievement

A krusok az eldntben megszerzett pontszmaik alapjn juthatnak a
dntbe. A dntbe juts felttele min. 70 pont megszerzse. Az eldnt
pontszmai nem nyilvnosak. Az nekkarok az eldntben megszerzett
pontjaikat nem viszik magukkal a dntbe.
A djazs a dntben szerzett pontszmok alapjn trtnik.

In the process of the adjudication, the points scored by performing the

compulsory works and those scored by performing the optional pieces
shall constitute 50-50% of the total score. Each member of the jury will
award 1-10 points for the compulsory works as well as for the chosen
optional works. The points awarded for the optional pieces shall be
calculated as the average of the points awarded for the individual pieces.
Thus, maximum 20 points may be received from each one of the individual
jury members, which may total a maximum of 100 points altogether. The
members of the jury shall be allowed to use only one decimal number
(Thus 8.5 points may be awarded but 8.75 points may not). The members
of the jury shall award their respective scores immediately after the
performance of the piece and shall write it on the scoring sheet.
2.3
Choirs exceeding the given time limit shall be penalized by deducting one
point for every overtime minute from their total score. Exactly the same
applies to those choirs whose programs are shorter than the minimum
limit.
2.4
Scoring and awarding the prizes:
The choirs may qualify to the finals on the basis of their points scored in
the semi-finals. The minimum score for qualifying to the finals shall be 70
points. However, the points scored in the semi-finals are not public and
shall not be forwarded into the finals.
Awarding the prizes shall be administered on the basis of the points
scored in the finals.
1st prizes may not be awarded below 85 points
2nd prizes may not be awarded below 80 points
3rd prizes may not be awarded below 75 points
No prize shall be shared. In an exceptional case if the difference between
the final scores of two choirs is less than one (1) point, the jury may
propose to award two prizes of equal value (ex aequo). The final decision

3. Competition for the Grand Prize
Choirs may enter the competition for the Grand Prize as specified in the
competition announcement. This contest will be held if a minimum of
three choirs have been entered. The evaluation procedure will follow the
same basic principles as identified for the other competition categories.
The Jury shall decide about the Grand Prize in conclave through secret
ballot by clear majority. If the competition for the Grand Prize takes place,
the Grand Prize must and will be awarded.
4. Special Prizes
The special prizes will be awarded on the recommendation of the
Presidents of the juries on the basis of the opinions of the jury members.
The final decisions shall be made by the Artistic Board.
5. All decisions of the juries shall be final and irrevocable.

In the competition for the Grand Prize, only works composed in the
20th and 21st centuries may be performed. []
Choral works with musical accompaniment may also be performed
in the program for the Grand Prize but with no more than maximum
five instrumental participants. The winner of the Grand Prize will be
invited to the Competition for the European Grand Prix for Choral
Singing held every year alternately in Arezzo, Debrecen, Maribor,
Tolosa, Tours and Varna. This competition is organized for the Grand
Prize winners of the six respective choir contests to compete for the

The City of Debrecen will host the 26th Bla Bartk International Choir
Competition between 30 July 03 August 2014 in Debrecen, Hungary
The aims and purposes of the competition:

to present contemporary choral music

in an intelligible and convincing way
to popularise high-level collective singing
to promote the meeting of the composers
and choral musicians of different nationalities, and
to strengthen the relationship between contemporary
music and the general public

Categories of the competition:

childrens choirs
youth choirs
choirs of equal voices
chamber choirs
mixed choirs

Both amateur and professional choirs may participate in the Bla Bar-
