Our Church Staff
Approved Denbigh Presbyterian Church Annual Statistical Report for 2013 and directed the Clerk of Session to publish a summary of the report in the next Newsletter/Digest. Approved communion for 9 a.m. worship service on Easter Sunday, April 20. Appointed a 4-member team composed of John Munick, Bill Morrison, Keith Pennell and Pete Marshall to review and negotiate any purchase contract received on SPC facility and to secure legal counsel. Voted to add a line item to the 2014 operating budget for Transition Expenses so that these expenses can be tracked throughout the year. It was noted that the expense of changing the outdoor sign to read Denbigh United Presbyterian Church and the expense of moving the grand piano from SPC to DUPC were covered by a donor and were not paid from either the operating budget or savings. Approved an expenditure of $391.28 to have the green road signs on Warwick Boulevard to read Denbigh United Presbyterian Church, payable from new Transition Expenses Line Item. Tabled the motion regarding the use of DUPC and/or SPC facilities by St. Mary Coptic Church. Approved a motion that we not charge St. Mary Coptic Church for use of church facilities. Elected Gerry Ellis as ruling elder commissioner and Joe Bender as alternate ruling elder commissioner for the Stated Meeting of PEVA on April 29, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Wycliffe Presbyterian Church.
Are You Looking for a Circle of Friends? A Small Group May Be the Answer.
Here at Denbigh United we have several Small Groups and are eager to start more. A Small Group is a group of 6-12 people who meet weekly or every other week for Bible study/discussion, prayer, fellowship and service. Deep and abiding friendships can grow in these groups as believers student Gods Word and support one another. Our existing groups are listed below. If you are interested in an existing group or in being a part of a new group, please contact Deborah Dail or Tim Jacoby.
Sunday evenings (every other week) from 6:30-8 p.m. This group meets at the church and childcare is provided. The facilitator is Kristi Spivey, and the group is currently studying The Five Love Languages of Children. For information, call Kristi at (757) 814-9538. Sunday evenings (every other week) from 5:30-7:30 p.m. This group meets at the home of Dale and Keith Pennell. The group discusses the Sunday sermons. For more information, contact Dale Pennell at (757) 303-7762. Wednesday evenings (every week) at 7:30 p.m. This group meets at the home of Tim and Debbie Jacoby. The group is studying Angels Among Us. For more information, contact Tim Jacoby at (412) 720-4808. Thursday afternoons from 1:00-3:00 p.m. there is a four week Small Group at the home of Jay and Mary Lee Dunn studying about Mary, Mother of Christ. This group will meet every Thursday from March 27-April 17.
The Adult Bible Class is taught by Jay Dunn and Bob Young. During the spring quarter (March through May) the Adult Bible Class will be studying a variety of Old and New Testament books with an emphasis on exploring the connections between Jesus and the Hebrew Scriptures. The class meets Sunday mornings at 9:15 in the Fellowship Room. The Ladies Discussion Group is studying Where Faith and Culture Meet. This series of six DVDs and the study book will engage you in Bible study discussion regarding bold ways to discover Gods challenge in each of us - to minister to our culture - and what that means to you. If interested in joining us, please contact Amy Schmidt at ahschmidt50@[Link]. This class meets at 9:15 on Sunday mornings in the Parlor. Living as a Committed Christian in the Kingdom in the 21st Century Class Beginning March 30, we are offering a third Adult Sunday School class. This class, featuring a small group discussion/seminar format, will use relevant Scripture to consider the implications of how a Christian might deal with such issues as: healthcare, poverty, affluence, inequality, education, individualism and community, human rights, diversity, violence, the Jesus of the Gospels, Christian responsibilities, and other issues that might surface or become prominent in the news. Mike Langrehr will facilitate this class which will meet in the Library. Please join us on March 30 at 9:15 a.m.
Thank you for your enthusiastic response to the needs of the Kairos ministry to the Sussex II State Prison. From my own local jail ministry, I can attest that these folks appreciate genuine "loving" contact with the world they left behind. Holding out your hand to strangers brings a spiritual blessing that adds warmth to your heart and spring to your step. Remember Matthew 25:31-40 Why Bake Cookies For Kairos? Many in prison have hit bottom the lowest possible point in their lives. They feel isolated, cast out, alone, and unloved. For many, their families and friends have abandoned them. Often the cookies you bake are the only indication to them that they have not become completely abandoned. Each Kairos Weekend lasts four days. On Saturday of every weekend a bag of homemade cookies is delivered to every resident (over 1,200) in every cell at that institution by Kairos volunteers. Your homemade cookies tell the residents that someone who doesnt even know them still cares enough to give them something the time it takes to bake the cookies without wanting something in return. Such selflessness is often a unique experience for them. It also teaches them to trust. Most inmates in the prison system are takers, not givers. This brief experience of sharing something of value freely often with those they do not like has a powerful effect. During the Sussex II State Prison Kairos weekend approximately 3000 dozen cookies are needed for cell delivery and during the three full days of classes and discussions. No cookies are ever wasted. All types of cookies are needed Cookies should be no larger than 2 in diameter. This size does not break as easily as larger ones. Do not make thin crisp cookies as they break too easily and cannot be used. Do not use powdered sugar topping or use any fruit such as raisins or currants or M&Ms in the cookies. Once the cookies cool completely, place one dozen each in individual clear Ziploc bags and take them to the church kitchen. There will be several boxes placed in the kitchen from Saturday 4/19 to Wednesday 4/23 marked Kairos Cookies. While you are preparing the cookies, we ask that you pray for the people who will eat them. The next Kairos weekend begins on April 24. Cookies will be collected from the church kitchen by a Kairos team member by noon on Wednesday April 23. If you have any questions just call Mike Langrehr at 757-775-5297 or call Rusty Norton at 814-1091.

The Gardens at Warwick Forest
On a regular schedule, Denbigh United Presbyterian Church conducts a service at The Gardens at Warwick Forest. The next service is Monday, March 31at 10:00 AM. This is a multi-center facility for those who are in nursing care, rehabilitation, and hospice. The worship service lasts for approximately thirty minutes and includes all the elements enjoyed during our Sunday Services. We need volunteers to sing, read, or just visit with those who attend. It is a blessing to all and a great opportunity to reach out to those who cannot normally attend Christian services. For more information or if you would like to help, please contact Rusty Norton (cell 757-814-1091 or email rustynorton@[Link]). Blessings to all, Rusty Norton

SUMMER CAMP
Makemie Woods offers a great summer camping program for kids entering first grade through High School. Campers enjoy new adventures in a radically accepting Christian community, surrounded by nature. Many parents and campers continue to tell us about how their lives have been affected and changed by the camp experience. The camps online registration program greatly enhances and streamlines the process, reducing postage costs and wasted paper. Returning campers are able to register quickly with just a few clicks, and first-timers have an easier means of selecting programs that meet their schedules. Registration is live, both online and in paper format - don't wait to sign up, popular sessions fill fast.
Faith Weaver Friends, our Wednesday evening Childrens and Youth Ministry for students K-12, is having a successful winter/spring term.
