For the past seven years, Cher-
ry Hill resident Mia Zaretsky has
been giving, rather than receiv-
ing, on her birthday.
Each year, Zaretsky gathers
gifts from her family and friends
and gives them to a local organi-
zation or cause on her birthday. In
the past, she donated to organiza-
tions such as Childrens Hospital,
the Voorhees Animal Shelter and
Vietnam veterans.
However, after learning about
the seven continents in her third-
grade class at Woodcrest Elemen-
tary School, Zaretsky wanted to
take her fundraiser for 2014 inter-
national and help people in
Africa. Her mother, Lisa , had no
idea how to make it happen.
I tried to steer her somewhere
locally in the state, but she was
dead set with Africa, she said.
Mia chose Africa after learning
about the living conditions there.
I wanted to because I know in
some parts of Africa they dont
have the kind of stuff we have,
she said.
The challenge for Lisa was to
figure out a way to allow her
daughter to donate to Africa. All
of Mias previous fundraising ef-
forts were done with in-state
charities.
I didnt know how this was
going to come to fruition for her,
Lisa said. We were going to let
her do her thing.
Fortunately, Lisa was told on
Facebook about a group of yoga

One of my priorities since taking office
two years ago has been to bring the local
government into the 21st century, and to
enhance our electronic services to make
them more convenient for residents, while
saving taxpayer dollars.
As part of this ongoing effort, Im happy
to share two new services that my office re-
cently launched in our tax collectors of-
fice. For additional information on either
service, please call the tax collector at 488-
7880, or visit the tax collectors page at
www.CherryHill-NJ.com.
Online payments
Property owners can now pay both their
taxes and township sewer bills by credit
card, debit card or electronic check online,
24 hours a day, seven days a week. All pay-
ments are submitted through a secure site,
which can be accessed through the View
and Pay Taxes/Sewer Online link on our
home page.
The third-party
payment process-
ing company will
charge users a 2.39
percent conven-
ience fee for credit
and debit pay-
ments. A 99-cent
fee will be as-
sessed for e-
checks. Credit and
debit card pay-
ments cannot be
accepted at the tax
office or by phone.
Paperless billing
Residents now also have the option of re-
placing their traditional paper bills with
an email notice. This newest service
launched about two weeks ago, and so far,
has been tremendously popular. In addi-
tion to making the information easier for
residents to access, the switch to paperless
billing will reduce the costs associated
with printing and mailing sewer bills.
To sign up, users must submit their re-
quest, along with their name, property lo-
cation, sewer account number and e-mail
address in one of three ways:
1. By e-mailing ebills@chtownship.
com.
2. By faxing the request to 661-4779,
attn: Tax Collector.
3. By mailing the request to the tax col-
lectors office, 820 Mercer St., Cherry Hill,
NJ 08002.
Its important to note that subscribers
will no longer receive a traditional paper
bill in the mail. To ensure that bills are de-
livered without interruption, its critical

awmakers in Trenton are at it
again, proposing new taxes to
pay for something the state ap-
parently cant afford. This time,
theyre after gas, proposing to increase
the tax on it by five cents per gallon to
help rebuild and repair New Jerseys
roads and bridges.
Our initial response, when reading
this news, was you have to be kid-
ding! The last thing we need in this
state is to be taxed more, and here goes
another politician specifically state
Sen. Raymond Lesniak this time put-
ting forth a bill that would take more
money out of our pockets.
Lesniak claims that the proposed
tax increase would bring in about $250
million a year for road repairs that are
much-needed, and his research indi-
cates that 40 percent of this sum
would come from out-of-state drivers.
He also claims that the five-cent tax
increase would cost the average driver
less than $100 more in gas each year.
Hes probably right on that figure 15
gallons per week, times five cents is 75
cents, times 52 weeks is $39.
The point, though, is that its not
about the relatively low impact on res-
idents wallets; its the fact that theres
an impact at all.
Sure, $39 extra per year isnt a lot of
money when you put it in perspec-
tive thats two movie tickets, a pop-
corn and two drinks nowadays. But
the fact that New Jersey residents
have to pay ANY extra tax on gas
seems absurd to us.
When you combine a higher gas tax
with probable increases in municipal
taxes, school taxes and county taxes,
what you get is a snowball situation
that, over time, makes it financially
unbearable to live in this state.
For once, our politicians should
learn a tried and true practice that
they seem to ask us all to do to help out
in times of need its called budget-
ing. Our elected leaders need to do
more with what they have. Cut the
waste, and be more efficient with what
we have already given them.
Enough is enough when it comes to
taxes. Its time for lawmakers to step
up and prove why we elected them.
in our opinion
Pay for roads with gas?
Stop taxing the residents and start managing the budget
Your thoughts
What are your thoughts when it comes to
a proposed increase in the states gas tax?
Is it a good way to fund repairs to roads
and bridges? Are you fed up with taxes in
our state? Share your thoughts through a

As outdoor activi-
ties increase with the
arrival of warmer
weather, so does the
chances of encounter-
ing animals. The
Camden County De-
partment of Health
and Human Services
reminds you to avoid
any contact with un-
known animals due to the threat of ra-
bies.
Although rabies is a serious and
sometimes fatal illness, its effects can be
prevented by early treatment. The dis-
ease is spread to humans through the
bite of an infected animal, or much
more rarely through exposure to the
saliva of that animal.
If you have been bitten or scratched
by a wild animal it is important that you
seek immediate medical attention to
prevent the onset of the disease. Indi-
viduals who have been exposed to a
rabid animal usually receive a series of
injects in the deltoid (shoulder) at pre-
scribed intervals. Prompt medical atten-
tion after being bitten or exposed to a
diseased animal is essential to an indi-
viduals recovery.
I urge you to protect your family, your
pets and yourself from rabies by observ-
ing a few simple rules. First and fore-
most, please be a responsible pet owner
and keep rabies vaccinations up to date
for all dogs, cats, and ferrets. You should
also keep your pets under direct super-
vision so they do not come in contact
with wild animals.
If your pet is bitten by a wild animal,
you should seek immediate veterinary
assistance for the animal. Always con-
tact your local animal control agency to
remove any stray animals from your
neighborhood. They may be unvacci-
nated and could be infected by the dis-
ease.
It is very important to avoid direct
contact with unfamiliar animals. Teach
your children that they
should never handle un-
familiar animals, wild
or domestic, even if
they seem friendly.
Never adopt wild ani-
mals or bring them into
your home. Do not try
to nurse sick animals to
health. Always call ani-
mal control or an ani-
mal rescue agency for assistance. Be
sure to know the animal control num-
ber in your municipality.
Enjoy wild animals such as raccoons,
skunks, and foxes from a distance. Do
not handle, feed, or unintentionally at-
tract wild animals with open garbage
cans or liter. Prevent bats from entering
living quarters or occupied spaces in
homes, churches, schools and other sim-
ilar areas where they might come in
contact with people or pets.
In addition to avoiding direct contact
with wild animals, be especially careful
around dogs when traveling abroad. Ra-
bies is common in developing countries
in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Tens of thousands of people die of ra-
bies each year in these regions.

vention website:

Protect your family from
rabies this spring
On Tuesday, March 18, the Se-
ward Johnson sculpture, Sunday
Morning, which sits outside the
Cherry Hill Public Librarys front
doors, was removed and tem-
porarily loaned to Grounds For
Sculpture for a career retrospec-
tive exhibition to honor interna-
tionally renowned American
sculptor Seward Johnson.
The retrospective exhibition
will be unveiled at the 42-acre
Grounds For Sculpture art park
in Hamilton on May 4. It will be
the largest exhibition in the
parks history. The exhibit of
more than 150 works will be on
display through Sept. 21.
The Sculpture Foundation con-
tacted the Cherry Hill Public Li-
brary about loaning Sunday
Morning for the exhibition. The
sculpture will be transported,
cleaned and refurbished for use at
Grounds For Sculpture, at no cost
to the library.
After the exhibition, Sunday
Morning will be reinstalled at its
original location at the Cherry
Hill Public Library.
Sunday Morning was first cre-
ated in 1985 and there have been
two castings. Sunday Morning I
was sold in 1989 to an owner in
Miami Beach, Fla. Sunday Morn-
ing II was purchased by the
Friends of the Cherry Hill Public
Library in 2007 after a year-long
community campaign.
The Camden County Freehold-
er Board has been notified that
New Jersey American Water is
making repairs to a main trans-
mission line along Springdale
Road in Cherry Hill, near the
Springdale Farm Market.
The repairs are expected to
take about three weeks beginning
on March 24 and will involve lane
restrictions 24 hours a day for the
duration of the project. Traffic
will be reduced to one lane in
each direction between Justa
Lane and Kresson Road.
Motorists need to be aware of
the construction taking place on
Springdale Road over the next
few weeks and plan their com-
mutes accordingly, said Free-
holder Ian Leonard, liaison to the
Camden County Department of
Public Works. Whenever you are
driving through a road construc-
tion zone, please stay prepared for
traffic pattern changes and be ob-
servant of posted instructions or
directions from police officers.
Significant traffic delays are
expected, and drivers are asked to
seek an alternate route to their
destinations through the week of
April 7.
There will be message boards
and designated traffic manage-
ment on the site. The exact timing
of the project will be dependent
upon the weather and other fac-
tors.

instructors visiting from Kenya
as part of a program called the
Africa Yoga Project. The instruc-
tors were visiting Anjali in Maple
Shade.
Zaretsky contacted Anjali
owner Wanda Gihool about Mias
Mission. Gihool agreed to help
and put the Zaretsky family in
touch with the guest instructors.
Mia was going to donate food
and clothes to Kenya. However,
she ended up having to do an al-
ternative.
My mom said I was going to
collect clothes and food, but they
dont allow that, so we collected
money, Mia said.
They said they couldnt take
things back because of the laws
in Africa, Lisa said.
Despite this hurdle, a few of
the visiting Kenyans informed
the Zaretsky family their village
was constructing an orphanage.
Since products couldnt be
brought back to Africa, the Zaret-
skys began to collect money to
help fund the orphanage.
Before the guest instructors re-
turned to Kenya, Mia was able to
give them $109.30 in a mason jar.
Zaretsky doesnt have a large
campaign for her fundraisers.
Each year, friends and family re-
ceive information about it
through word of mouth and do-
nate to whichever cause Zaretsky
chooses.
Lisa helps to organize the
fundraiser a bit, but said her
daughter does the rest of the
work.
This is all her, she said. I let
her do her thing. Shes a really
special kid.
Mias birthday is on April 19,
giving her a few more weeks to
raise money for the orphanage.
So far, she has received between
$200 and $300. She hopes to hit her
goal of $500 in the next few weeks.
Even with this fundraiser still
ongoing, Zaretsky is looking for-
ward to her next project. She
wants to continue continent hop-
ping and send donations to Asia
next year.
Shes researching pandas
with the bamboo and she doesnt
understand how theyre cutting
down the forests, Lisa said.
As far as how donations are
going to be made to Asia, Zaret-
sky is going to leave that project
to her daughter.
Im going to let her go online
and research it, Lisa said with a
laugh. I have no idea.

situation.
At its March 11 work session,
the Cherry Hill Board of Educa-
tion passed a resolution to ask the
township to install traffic control
signs at Kingston Elementary
School. The new signs prohibit
left-hand turns onto Kingston
Road, effectively forcing all cars
exiting the school to turn right.
The passage of the resolution
was the final step in the installa-
tion of the signs. The school dis-
trict hopes the new signs will im-
prove traffic flow and safety once
parents get used to the new pat-
tern.
The school district and town-
ship worked collaboratively in
putting up the signs. Barbara Wil-
son, the public information offi-
cer for Cherry Hill schools, said
the district needed the townships
permission to put up the signs.
Because the street in question
is under township jurisdiction,
arrangements had to be made
with the township to put them
up, Wilson said.
Meetings were held between
members of the neighborhood,
parents, school officials, town-
ship officials and traffic safety of-
ficials. Township director of com-
munications Bridget Palmer said
finding a solution was a matter of
striking a balance between the
many parties involved.
(The signs) were a direct re-
sult of meetings we had with resi-
dents who came out to the earlier
(council meeting), Palmer said.
We had to strike a balance with
the convenience of the parents
because we know theyre drop-
ping off their kids and the resi-
dents who live in the neighbor-
hood are impacted.
Kate Laskowski brought the
issue to the township during the
Jan. 27 council meeting. Since
then, she and other parents had
meetings to try to resolve the
issue.
Even though the new traffic
flow has been popular, there is
still an issue of illegally parked
cars on Kingston Road. Parents
are unable to leave their cars
parked on the street to walk their
kids to school without the risk of
being ticketed. There is no park-
ing permitted on either side of
the road from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on
school days.
What had been happening is
that parents, as they drop their
kids off, have been parking, get-
ting out and walking the kids off,
Palmer said. It was creating is-
sues with buses getting on
Kingston Road and the cars com-
ing down both ways on Kingston
Road.
Laskowski said the parents
want parking allowed on the
street, but the township refused
to consider the idea for safety rea-
sons. She also said residents on
the street are in support of allow-
ing parking.
They adamantly want park-
ing allowed on that street,
Laskowski said of the residents.
Theyve had issues with getting
ticketed and having to move their
cars early in the morning so they
wont get a ticket.
This has been an issue long
enough, Laskowski said. They
mentioned they did a survey back
in 1997. This has clearly been an
issue.
Even though parking is still il-
legal, the township and school
district are hoping the new signs
will help improve the flow of traf-
fic in and out of the school.
The township and school dis-
trict are also looking at solutions
to improve traffic flow in the fu-
ture.
I was very appreciative with
all of the attention the mayors of-
fice gave, Laskowski said.
