Second Vespers
The following Psalms are always sung, usually with ant.:

The Lord hath sworn. tone 7.

Psalm 109Dixit Dminus
T
he Lord said unto my Lord : Sit Thou at
My right hand, Until I make Thine
enemies : the footstool of Thy feet. A sceptre of
power shall the Lord send unto Thee out of Sion :
rule Thou in the midst of Thine enemies. With
Thee is dominion in the day of Thy power, in the
splendour of Thy saints : from the womb before
the morning star have I begotten thee. The Lord
hath sworn and will not repent : Thou art a priest
for ever, after the order of Melchisedek. The
Lord at Thy right hand : hath broken kings in the
day of His wrath. He shall judge among the
nations, He shall fill them with dead bodies : He
shall crush the heads of many upon the earth. He
shall drink of the brook in the way : therefore
shall He lift up His head. 4 44 44 Glory be to the
Father and to the Son : and to the Holy Spirit. As
it was in the beginning, and now and always : and
unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Unless the Psalms are under one ant., the ant. does follow:

The Lord hath sworn | and will not re-pent:

Thou art a priest for ev- er.

The Lord. tone 8.

Psalm 112Laudte peri
P
raise the Lord, O ye servants : praise ye the
name of the Lord. Blessed be the name of
the Lord : from henceforth and for evermore.
From the rising of the sun unto the going down
of the same : the name of the Lord is to be
praised. High above all the nations is the Lord :
above the heavens is His glory. Who is like
unto the Lord our God, Who dwelleth on high :
and looketh down on things that are lowly, in
heaven and on the earth? Who raiseth up the
poor man from the earth : and from the dunghill
lifteth up the pauper, That He may seat him with
princes : with the princes of His people, Who
maketh the barren woman to dwell in a house :
and be a mother rejoicing over children. 4 44 44
Glory be to the Father and to the Son : and to the
Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, and now
and always : and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

am Thy servant : I am Thy servant and the son of
Thy handmaid. Thou hast broken my bonds
asunder : I will sacrifice a sacrifice of praise unto
Thee, and I will call upon the name of the Lord.
My vows unto the Lord will I pay in the
presence of all His people : in the courts of the
house of the Lord, in the midst of thee, O
Jerusalem. 4 44 44 Glory be to the Father and to the
Son : and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the be-
ginning and now and always : etc. ant.:

Thou hast brok-en | my bonds a- sun-der, O

Lord. I will sac-ri-fice a sac-ri-fice of praise

In their go-ing they went. tone 8.

Psalm 125In convertndo

hen the Lord turned again the captivity of
Sion : we became as men that are
comforted. Then was our mouth filled with joy :
and our tongue with rejoicing. Then shall they
say among the nations : The Lord hath done great
things unto them. The Lord hath done great
things among us : and we are become glad. Turn
again, O Lord, our captivity : like streams in the
south. They that sow with tears : shall reap with
rejoicing. In their going they went, and they
wept : as they cast their seeds. But in their
coming shall they come with rejoicing : bearing
their sheaves. 4 44 44 Glory be to the Father and to
the Son : and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the
beginning and now and always : etc. ant.:

Their prin-ci-pa- li- ties. tone 7.
Psalm 138Dmine probsti
O
Lord, Thou hast proved me and Thou
knowest me : Thou knowest my down-
sitting and mine uprising. Thou hast discerned
my thoughts from afar : my path and my lot hast
Thou traced out, And hast foreseen all my ways
: for there is no guile in my tongue. Behold,
Lord, Thou knowest all things, the last and the
first : Thou hast fashioned me and hast laid Thy
hand upon me. Thy knowledge is too wonderful
for me : it is mighty; I cannot attain unto it.
Whither shall I go from Thy Spirit : and from
Thy presence whither shall I flee? If I go up into
heaven, Thou art there : if I go down into hades,
Thou art present there. If I take up my wings
toward the dawn : and make mine abode in the
uttermost parts of the sea, Even there shall Thy
hand guide me : and Thy right hand shall hold
me. And I said: Surely darkness shall tread me
down : and the night shall be turned into light in
my delight. For darkness will not be darkness
with Thee, and night shall be bright as the day : as
is the darkness thereof, even so shall the light
thereof be. For Thou hast possessed my reins, O
Lord : Thou hast holpen me from my mothers
womb. I will confess Thee, for awesomely art
thou wondrous : marvellous are Thy works, and
my soul knoweth it right well. My bone is not
hid from Thee, which Thou madest in secret : nor
my substance in the nethermost parts of the earth.

say concerning their thoughts : that in vain shall
they take Thy cities. As for them that hate Thee,
O Lord, have I not hated them : and because of
Thine enemies have I not pined away? With
perfect hatred have I hated them : they are
reckoned enemies with me. Prove me, O God,
and know my heart : examine me and know my
paths. And see if the way of iniquity be in me :

ceive the crown of life which God hath promised

Lessons 1-3 for a Bishop-martyr, p. 244. But in the case
of all other martyrs, the following:
Lesson 1. He that with pious love doth gaze upon the
Saints good deeds, and whosoever speaketh with repeated
praise about the glory of the righteous, let him emulate their
holy conduct and their righteousness! For he that is
delighted by the good deed of any Saint, is bound equally to
delight in serving God. And here is the reason he must
emulate the Saint if he praiseth him, and ought not to praise
him if he declineth to emulate him: that whoso praiseth
another may render himself praiseworthy, and whoso doth
marvel at the good deeds of the Saints may himself become
marvellous through holiness of life. But Thou, O Lord, be
merciful unto us. (Music, p. xxi.)

Lesson 2. If we love the righteous and faithful because we

difficult thing for us to emulate what is done by them,

(without their having had a precedent example), that they
made themselves not emulators of others but offered their
own selves to us as examples of virtue to be emulated. Thus,
whilst we derive profit from them, and others from us,
Christ may be praised in His servants within the Church for
evermore. But Thou, O Lord, be merciful unto us.

Lesson 3. From the beginning of the world, innocent Abel
was slain; Enoch, who pleased God, was translated; No
was found just; Abraham proved faithful; Moses was
distinguished for meekness; Jesus [i.e., Joshua] was chaste;
David, kind; Elias, acceptable; Daniel, holy. The three
youths became victorious. And the Apostles, the disciples
of Christ, were reckoned teachers of the believers, from
among whose number the learned confessors fought very
bravely, and the martyrs, made perfect, won victory. Yes,
the armies of Christians, being armed with God, always
vanquish the Devil. In these men, the virtues are always the
same; the battles are different, the victories are glorious. O
Christian, a mollycoddled soldier art thou if thou thinkest
thou canst conquer without any battles, or get victory
without any combat. Flex thy muscles; contend with
fortitude; persist ferociously in the battle; pick a fight.
Ponder thine oath of service; remember thou art a soldier;
understand how to wage the warthat is, the oath thou
didst swear, the soldiers rank thou didst attain, the war for
which thou didst enlist. Under this oath fought all those
whom thou dost admire. In this rank they all conquered.

A Homily of Blessed Augustine the Bishop. The Lord
spoke of Himself; He was the grain that had to die and be
multiplied; to suffer death through the unbelief of the Jews,
and to be multiplied in the faith of many peoples. And now,
by way of exhortation to follow in the footsteps of His own
Passion, He saith: He that loveth his life shall lose it,
which may be understood in two ways: He that loveth shall
lose, that is, If thou lovest it, be ready to lose it; if thou
wouldst possess life in Christ, be not afraid of death for
Christ. Or otherwise: He that loveth his life shall lose it:
do not love it, lest thou lose it; love it not in this life, lest
thou lose it in eternal life. But what I have said last seemeth
better to correspond with the sense of the Gospel, for there

Just as the love of a man for his life can be such that he dieth,
his hatred can be such that he doth not die. If thou love it

Lesson 9. And to Peter He said, signifying by what death
he should glorify God: When thou wast younger, thou
didst gird thyself and didst walk where thou wouldst. But
when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands,
and another shall gird thee and lead thee whither thou
wouldst not (Jn 21:18). Here He made it sufficiently plain
that it is not by oneself but by another that one who
followeth the footsteps of Christ must be slain. So when
ones situation reacheth such a crisis that this condition is
set before him, that he must either act contrary to the
commandment of God or must pass out of this life, and a
man is compelled to choose one or the other of the two by
the persecutor who is threatening him with death, in such a
case let him choose to die beloved to God rather than live
after having offended Him. In such a case, he shall hate his
life in this world that he may keep it unto life eternal. If any
man minister to Me, let him follow Me. What meaneth let
him follow Me, but let him imitate me? Because Christ
suffered for us, saith Peter the Apostle, leaving you an
example, that you should follow His steps (1 Pet 2:21).
Behold what was said: If any man minister to Me, let him

disciples: If any man come to Me, and hate not his father

yea and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And

A Homily of Blessed Gregory the Pope. If we consider,
dearly beloved brethren, what and how many things are
promised us in the heavens, all the things which are to be
had upon earth become worthless to the soul. For in
comparison to the bliss on high, earthly substance is a
burden, not a mainstay. In comparison to eternal life,
temporal life should be called death rather than life. Yes,
being a daily rebellion of corruption, what is it but a certain
postponement of death? But Thou...

Lesson 8. But what things can be uttered by the tongue, or
what intellect is sufficient to grasp how many are the joys of
bliss on high? To be amidst choirs of Angels, to be present
to the glory of the Creator with the most blessed spirits, to
behold the face of God Who is present, to see the
uncircumscribable Light, to be frightened by no fear of
death, to be glad in the endless gift of incorruption? The
mind is set aflame in hearing these things, and presently
longeth to be there where it hopeth to rejoice without end.
But great gifts cannot be attained without great labours. To
that end, Paul, the most excellent preacher, also saith: For
he is not crowned, except he strive lawfully (2 Titus 2:5).
Let therefore the greatness of the rewards delight the mind,
but not distract it from the strife of toils. That is why the

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ also loved the
Church (Eph. 5:25). Lo, the Student preacheth that ones
wife is to be loved, whilst his Teacher saith: Whosoever
hateth not his wife, cannot be My disciple. Doth the judge
announce one thing, and the bailiff another? Or can we both
hate and love at the same time? But if we apply ourselves to
understanding the commandment, we shall be able, by
discretion, to do both. Thus we love those that are joined to
us by the kinship of the flesh and who are our neighbours,
and those whom we determine are our adversaries on the

A Homily from Diverse Writings. Since our Lord and
Redeemer came into the world as a new Man, He produced
for the world new commandments. And to our lives, trained
in sinful habits, He opposed the contrariness of His
newness. For what did the old man know, what did the
carnal man know, but to retain his own possessions, seize
those of others if he could, and covet them if he could not?
But the heavenly Physician offereth us remedies
corresponding to each and every one of our sinful habits.
And just as in the medical field cold things are cured by hot,
and hot by cold, so our Lord matched our sins with
contrasting cures. Thus He commanded self-mastery for
the lustful, generosity for the greedy, meekness for the
irritable, and for those puffed up, humility. But Thou...

Lesson 8. As He was laying His new commandments
before His followers, He said decisively, Except every one
renounce all that he possesseth, he cannot be My disciple
(cf. Lk. 14:33), as if He were to clearly say, Ye that coveted
others possessions throughout your old life, are giving
away even your own possessions by the grace of your new
way of life. And let us listen to what the Lord is saying in
this reading: If any man will come after Me, let him deny
himself. In that place is said that we should deny our own
things; in this place is said that we should deny our own
selves. Yes, it can be that it doth not take much work for a
man to forsake his things; but it taketh an exceedingly great
effort for him to forsake himself. It is a small thing indeed
for him to deny what he hath, since it is a thing exceedingly
great for him to deny what he is. And the Lord commanded
us who come to Him to renounce our possessions, because

Lesson 9. An evil spirit possesseth nothing of its own in
this world. So, with one who is naked we should fight
naked. For if anyone clothed wrestleth with someone
naked, he is thrown to the ground rather quickly, for he hath
something whereby he can be gripped. Now, what are all
earthly things but clothes, as it were, of the body? Therefore
he that goeth out to a fight against the Devil, let him cast off
his clothes, so as not to succumb. Let him possess nothing
in this world by loving it; let him seek after none of the
delights of things fallen; lest in that moment he be gripped
by what he is clothed through his own will. That said, it is
not enough for us to leave our possessions behind, if we do
not also leave ourselves behind. What is this we are saying?
Can we leave ourselves behind too? For if we leave our own
selves, where shall we go apart from ourselves? Or who is
the one that is going, if it is himself he is leaving? But we
who are fallen through sin are one thing, and we who are
created in our nature, are another. What we have done is
one thing, what we have become is another. Let us abandon
ourselves as we have made ourselves by sinning, and let us
remain ourselves as we have become through grace. But

LESSONS FOR A MARTYRED BISHOP
Lesson 1. A Homily of St. Gregory. Dearly beloved
brethren, we ought always to think of what was said to the
holy Apostles, and through the Apostles to us: Ye are the
salt of the earth (Mt. 5:13). If then we are salt, we must
season the souls of the faithful. So ye that are pastors, see
that ye feed Gods living creatures. Of these creatures it
truly is said to God by the psalmist: Thy living creatures
shall dwell therein (Ps. 67). Yes, we often see that a block
of salt is set out for brute beasts, that they perforce may lick
that salt-block and grow healthier. Therefore, a Priest ought
to be among the people like a salt-block among brute
beasts. It is necessary for a Priest to be careful what he saith
to each and every person, and how he doth admonish each
person. As soon as anyone is connected with a Priest, he is
seasoned by the flavour of eternal life, as by contact with
salt. But Thou...

Lesson 2. The fact is, we are not salt if we do not season the
hearts of our listeners. He truly sprinkleth that seasoning
over his neighbour, who doth not deprive him of words of
preaching. And what shall I call the souls of men, but Gods
food? For they are seasoned so that they may be put into His
Body, that is, so that they may contribute to the growth of
the eternal Church. If therefore the people are Gods food,
the Priests have been given the responsibility of being the
seasoning of the food. But when we cease making use of
prayer and holy knowledge, the salt is tasteless and cannot
season Gods food. And therefore it is not eaten by the
Creator, because through our follys neglect it is quite
unseasoned. Let us ponder, therefore, whether any people
have ever been converted by our words, or have done
penance once corrected from their evil deeds through our
rebukes, whether someone hath forsaken a dissipated life
through our instructions, whether someone hath turned
away from greed, or someone from pride. Let us ponder
what sort of increase for God we make, who after receiving
our talent were sent by him to trade with it. For He saith,
Trade till I come (Lk. 19:13). But Thou...
Resp. 2, The righteous man shall blossom, p. 237.
Lesson 3. Behold, He cometh now; behold, He seeketh the
profits from our trading. What kind of gain in souls will we
show Him for our trading? How many sheaves of souls will
we bring into His presence out of the cornfield of our
preaching? Let us set before our eyes that day of such
exacting precision, when the Judge will come and begin an
audit of His servants, to whom He loaned talents. Lo, He
will be seen in terrible majesty amidst choirs of Angels.
The multitude of all the elect, and of the reprobate, shall be
led to that great examination, and each man will reveal what
he did. There will appear Peter, together with the converted
Jews which he drew after him; Paul, leading the converted
world (if I may say so). There Andrew will bring after him,
into the Kings presence, the converts of Achaia; John
those of Asia; Thomas those of India. There all the rams of
the Lords flock will appear with the increases of those
souls which they, by their holy preaching, drew after them
as a flock obedient unto God. But Thou...
Resp. 3, This man knew righteousness, p. 237.
Lesson 4. So when all these shepherds are come with their
flocks before the eyes of the eternal Shepherd, what will we
wretches say, who have returned empty-handed to our
Master after trading? we who held the title of pastors and
have no sheep which we must exhibit through our nurture?
Here we are, called shepherds, and we lead no sheep
thither? But if we are negligent, doth almighty God forsake
His sheep? Not at all. For He will shepherd them Himself,
as He promised by the Prophet (Ezec 24:8-16). All those
whom He hath fore-ordained to life, He teacheth by the
motivation of scourges and the spirit of compunction.
Through us, it is true, the faithful come to Holy Baptism; by
our prayers they are blessed; and by the imposition of our
hands they receive the Holy Spirit from God, and they reach
the heavenly kingdom. And behold, we ourselves sink
downwards, due to our negligence. But Thou...
Resp. 4, The desire of his heart, p. 239.
Lesson 5. Purified at the hands of the Priests, the elect enter
their heavenly homeland, and the Priests themselves hasten
into the torments of hell through reprobate lives. What shall
I make of bad Priests? To what shall I liken them, if not to
the water of Baptism, which when it washeth away the sins
of the baptised, doth send them to the heavenly kingdom,
and then itself goeth down the drain. Let us fear these
things, dearly beloved brethren. Let our ministry match our
conduct precisely. Let us reflect daily on the forgiveness of
our sins, lest our lifeby which almighty God doth daily
free othersshould itself remain fettered by sin. Let us
unceasingly reflect on what we are; let us take thought for
our trading; let us think about the burden we have assumed.
Each day let us audit ourselves, as we shall be audited in the
presence of our Judge. And we must care for ourselves in
such a way that we do not neglect to care for our neighbour,
so that anyone who doth associate with us may be seasoned
by the salt of our words. But Thou...
Resp. 5, O Lord, Thou wentest, p. 240.
Lesson 6. When we see someone single and full of lusts,
we must counsel him to attempt bridling his iniquity
through marriage, so that he may learn, by what is allowed,
to overcome what is not allowed. When we see someone
married, we must advise him to occupy himself with the
cares of the world in such a way that he doth not put the love
of God second. He must satisfy his spouses wishes in such
a way that he displease not his Creator. When we see a
clergyman, we must advise him to live in such a way that he
may offer to worldly folk the example of his life, lest if
anything in him be justly censured, respect for our very
religion be dragged downward due to of his vice. When we
see a monk, we must advise him to take care for the
reverence due his habit, by his actions, by his speech, and
by his thoughtsand that he abandon perfectly the things
that are of the world, and that what he showeth to mens
eyes by his habit, the same he must hold up to Gods eyes by
his conduct. So one man is holy? let him be counselled to
grow more holy. But another is still sinful? let him be
counselled to correct his ways. Thus anyone whosoever
who shall associate with a Priest, shall go away seasoned by
the salt of his words. Reflect carefully on these things
within yourselves, dearly beloved brethren, pass them on to
your neighbours; have hope that from the trading ye have
undertaken, ye may return a harvest to almighty God. But
Thou....

GOSPEL EXPOSITION
For an Exiled Bishopwhether Martyr or Confessor
Lesson 7, A certain nobleman. A reading from the Holy
Gospel according to Luke. At that time Jesus spake this
parable to His disciples: A certain nobleman went into a far
country, to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.
And the rest. (19:12-26)
A sermon from the commentary of Venerable Bede the
Presbyter. This nobleman is He to Whom the blind man was
crying out earlier, Son of David, have mercy on me! And
when He came to Jerusalem, they sang aloud to Him,
Osanna to the Son of David; blessed is He that cometh in
the name of the Lord. The far country is the Church
composed of the Gentiles, which belongeth to that same
nobleman, He that said, But as for Me, I was established as
king by Him (Ps 2:6), and is told by the Father, Ask of Me,
and I will give Thee the nations for Thine inheritance, and
the uttermost parts of the earth for Thy possession (ib:8).
This inheritance and possession, ye see, are called far
country for two reasons, both because it is crying unto the
Lord from the ends of the earth, or because salvation is far
away from sinners. Yes, although God is present every-
where, nevertheless the true God is absent from the
understanding of those that worship idols. But those that
were afar off are become near through the blood of Christ.
And calling his ten servants, he gave them ten pounds.
The number ten pertaineth to the Law, because of the
Decalogue, that is, the Ten Commandments. But Thou...
Resp. 7, The crown of gold, p. 242.
Lesson 8. Now He called His household ten servants,
because He chose for His disciples men instructed in the
letter of the Law. He giveth them ten pounds because He is
revealing the sayings of the Law, which must be understood
spiritually. Certainly after His Passion and Resurrection He
opened their perception, that they might understand the
Scriptures. For a pound, which the Greeks call a mina, is
composed of a hundred drachmas, or pennies. And every
saying of Holy Scripture, since it encourageth us to the
perfection of a heavenly life, doth gleam like a pile of one
hundred gold pieces.
1
And He said to them, Trade till I
come. Bring to the people, He is saying, the words of the
Law and Prophets, opened by interpretation, and in return
ye will receive from them a confession of faith, and probity
of conduct. But His citizens hated him, and they sent an
embassage after him, saying: We will not have this man to
reign over us. He is calling the ungodly Jews citizens; it
is said of them in another passage: But now ye have both
seen and hated both Me and My Father (Jn. 15:24). These
are they who not only hated Him unto the death of the
Cross, but after His Resurrection unleashed a persecution
against the Apostles, and scorned their preaching of the
heavenly kingdom. And it came to pass, that he returned,
having received the kingdom. This meaneth the time when
He shall come in the most manifest majesty and the most
evident glory, He that appeared to them as a lowly man
when He said, My kingdom is not of this world (Jn.
18:36). But Thou...
Resp. 8, With a robe of joyfulness, p. 243.
Lesson 9. And he commanded his servants to be called, to
whom he had given the money, that he might know how
much every man had gained by trading. That he might
know, it saith. Not that anything is hidden to Him of Whom
it is said most truly, Lord, Thou knowest all things (Jn.
21:17). But it saith, That he might know, meaning, might
cause everyone to know. For then the deeds and thoughts
of all people will be openly displayed before all. And the
first came, saying: Lord, thy pound hath gained ten
pounds. The first servant is the order of teachers sent to the
circumcised. They received one pound to trade with
because they were sent to preach one Lord, one Faith, one
Baptism (Eph. 4:5), and one God. But this same pound
gained ten pounds, for by teaching the people they gathered
the people to them, established under the Law. And he said
to him: Well done, thou good servant; because thou hast
been faithful in a little, thou shalt have power over ten
cities. That servant is faithful in a little who doth not alter
the word of God, but speaketh it as if from God, with God,
in Christ. For whatever of His gifts we receive in the present
life is quite small and little compared to those which are to
come. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But
when that which is perfect is come, that which is in part
shall be done away (1 Cor. 13:9-10). And the ten cities are
souls coming to the word of the Law and the grace of the
Gospel. And justly shall he then be glorified, who is set
over them, he who hath committed to them the money of the
Word in a manner worthy of God. But Thou...

Lesson 7, Nothing is covered. A reading from the Holy
Gospel according to Matthew. At that time Jesus said to His
disciples: Nothing is covered that shall not be revealed, nor
hid, that shall not be made known. And the rest. (10:26-32)
A Homily of the Presbyter Rabanus. And just so, in the
present age the sinful habits of many remain unknown, but
regarding the time to come, it is written that when God shall
judge the secrets of men, He will also bring to light the
hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the
counsels of the hearts (1 Cor. 4:5). And the sense of it is:

Do not fear the savagery of persecutors and the fury of
blasphemers, for the day of judgment will come, when both
their virtue and their wickedness will be revealed. That
which I tell you in the dark, speak ye in the light, and that
which ye hear in the ear, preach ye upon the housetops, or,
What ye hear in mystery, preach more clearly; what ye have
learnt secretly, speak in public; what I have taught within
the small space of Juda speak boldly in all cities and in all
the world. Fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not
able to kill the soul. Even if they do kill the body, they
cannot kill the soul. The soul, then, is invisible and
incorporeal (as opposed, I am saying, to the denser
substance of our body). But it will certainly be punished
and feel torments at the time when it receiveth again its
original body, so that it may be punished together with that
wherewith it sinned. Fear Him that can destroy both soul
and body in the gehenna of fire. The word gehenna is not
found in the Old Testament books, but was first used by our
Saviour. So let us investigate what gave rise to this word.
We readmore than oncethat an idol of Baal was near
Jerusalem, at the foot of the mountains of Lebanon where
flowed the Siloam. This valley and small, flat plain were
well-watered and wooded, and very pleasant, and a grove in
them was consecrated to the idol. And the people of Israel
came to such madness that, leaving the precincts of the
temple, they immolated sacrifices there, and its delights
conquered the austerity of piety, and they burned their
children alive for the demons, or cast them to them. And
that place was called Gehennon, that is, valley of the sons of
Ennon. But Thou...
Resp. 7, The crown of gold, p. 242.
Lesson 8. This the book of Kings, and Paralipomenon, and
Jeremias, described very fully. And God warned that that
place would be filled with the corpses of the dead, that it
might never be called Tophet and Baal, but might be called
Poliandrium, that is, tomb of dead men (Jer. 7:32).
Therefore the future torments and endless punishments
wherewith sinners shall be slain are denoted by the name
of this place. And we read most clearly in Job that gehenna
is twofold, an extremity of fire and of cold. Are not two
sparrows sold for a farthing? and not one of them shall fall
on the ground without your Father. Fear not, therefore;
better are ye than many sparrows. The Lords words are
true in themselves, but the sequence dependeth on what was
said earlier. Prudent reader, always beware a superstitious
intellect, and do not adjust the Scriptures to thine
understanding, but unite thine understanding to the
Scriptures, and thou canst understand what followeth. He
said earlier, Fear ye not them that kill the body and are not
able to kill the soul; now, after that, He saith, Are not two
sparrows sold for a farthing? and not one of them shall fall
on the ground without your heavenly Father. And the
sense is: If the small and lesser animals do not fall without
God their Maker, and His Providence is over all things, and
those which are to perish do not perish without Gods will,
then ye who are eternal ought not to fear that ye may live
bereft of Gods Providence. But Thou...
Resp. 8, With a robe of joyfulness, p. 243.
Lesson 9. This sense is also mentioned earlier (ch. 6):
Behold the birds of the air, for they neither sow, nor do they
gather into barns, and your heavenly Father feedeth them.
Are not ye of much more value than they? And then,
Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow, and so on.
And if the grass of the field, which is to-day, and to-morrow
is cast into the oven, God doth so clothe, how much more
you, O ye of little faith? There are those who strain to
interpret the two sparrows as soul and body, and they say the
five sparrows, who are sold for two farthings according to
Luke, are the senses. But it is a matter of no small difficulty
how that understanding would apply to the whole of the
Gospel words. But the very hairs of your head are all
numbered; fear not therefore: better are ye than many
sparrows. The sense of our above exposition is clearer: that
they ought not to fear them that can kill the body and cannot
kill the soul. For if even the small animals do not fall down
without Gods knowing it, how much more a man who is
raised up by apostolic dignity? But what He is saying, The
very hairs of your head are all numbered, showeth the
boundless Providence of God regarding men, and signifieth
His untellable affection for them. Whilst nothing of ours is
hidden from God, even His little as well as ponderous
sayings flee our comprehension. They that deny the resur-
rection of the flesh deride the Churchs understanding of
this passage, as if we and the hairs that are numbered and cut
off by the barber shall all rise again. But our Saviour did not
say, But the very hairs of your head shall all be saved, but
they are numbered. By number is demonstrated know-
ledge of the number, not some restoration of that exact
number. But Thou...

Lesson 1. A Sermon of St. Augustine, on the Saints. The
Psalm which is sung to the Lord
1
seemeth to apply to the
holy martyrs. But if we are Christs members, as we ought
to be, we may understand it as directed to all of us. They
that sow with tears shall reap with rejoicing. In their going
they went, and they wept as they cast their seeds. But in
their coming shall they come with rejoicing, bearing their
sheaves.
1
Whither are they going, and whence coming?
Who are sowing with tears? What are the seeds? What are
the sheaves? The ones going to death are coming from
death. They go by being born; they come by resurrecting.
Those that sow good works, reap eternal pay. Our seeds,
then, are whatever good thing we did. The sheaves are that
which we shall receive in the end. But Thou...

Lesson 2. So if the good seeds are good works, why are
they sown with tears, when God loveth a cheerful giver?
2
See, dearly beloved, how beginning here these words apply
especially to the blissful martyrs. For no one hath spent as
much as they that spent themselves, as the Apostle Paul
saith: And I will be spent myself for your souls.
3
For they
spent themselves in confessing Christ, and fulfilling by His
help that which is said: Art thou set at a great table?
4
I
know that it behooveth thee to prepare great things of such
like. What is the great table, but that from which we take
the Body and Blood of Christ? What is, I know that it
behooveth thee to prepare great things of such like, but
what blessed John explained: As Christ hath laid down His
life for us, we ought to lay down our lives for the
brethren?

Lesson 3. Look how much the holy martyrs spent! But can
they have perished, when they had received a safe-conduct
from the Lord even for their hair? Can the hand perish,
when the hair on it perisheth not? Can the head perish, when
the hair on it perisheth not? When the eyelid doth not
perish, can the eye perish? Having received, then, this great
safe-conduct, they spent themselves. Let us therefore sow
with good works whilst there is yet time. As the Apostle
saith, He who soweth sparingly, shall also reap sparing-
ly.
1
Ceaselessly he saith, Whilst we have time, let us work
good to all men, but especially to those who are of the
household of the Faith.
2
And again he saith, In doing
good, let us not fail. For in due time we shall reap.
3
He that
faileth to sow the seed will not rejoice at harvest time. Why,
then, do it with tears, when all our doings should be with
cheer? Indeed, it is principally of the martyrs it can be said
that they sowed with tears. For they contended bravely, and
in great afflictions they were courageous. For Christ, that
He might give consolation to their tears, hath translated
them and transfigured them in Himself, and He said, My
soul is sorrowful, even unto death.

Lesson 4. My brethren, it seemeth to me that our Head took
pity on His weaker members, so that the weak members
would not despair of themselves, that is, of human frailty,
and become troubled at deaths approach, and say that they
must not belong to God, for if they belonged to Him, they
would be rejoicing. Therefore Christ was first to say: My
soul is sorrowful even unto death. Father, if it be possible,
let this chalice pass from Me.
1
Who is speaking this? What
power! What weakness! Listen to what He saith: I have
power to lay down My life, and I have power to take it up
again. No man taketh it away from Me, but I lay it down of
Myself, and I take it up again.
2
This power of His was
sorrowful when He did that which He could not unless He
willed it. For He did it by His power, and not by coercion;
because He Himself willed it, not because a Jew had the
capability. The Lord transfigured in Himself the weak
members of His body. And perhaps it is said of them, that is,
of the weak ones, They that sow with tears, shall reap with
rejoicing. But Thou...

Lesson 5. For surely he who was the great preacher of this
same Christ was not sowing with tears, was he, when he
said, For I am even now ready to be sacrificed, and the time
of my dissolution is at hand? I have fought a good fight,
I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. As to the
rest, he said, There is laid up for me a crown of justice,
which the Lord the just Judge will render to me in that day.
5
Its as if he were saying, He will make me a harvest, for
Whom I spend myself in sowing. We understand,
brethren, how much these words are those of a man
exulting, not weeping. Could he possibly have been in tears
when he was saying them? Wasnt he like the cheerful giver
whom the Lord loveth? To the weak, then, let us apply these
words, that the very ones who have sowed in tears may not
despair. For even if they did sow in tears, their sorrow
passeth with their end, and here cometh joy without end.
Nevertheless, dearly beloved, look how it seemeth to me
what is said applieth to everyone: They that sow with tears
shall reap with rejoicing. In their going they went, and they

Lesson 6. Listen, and perhaps with the Lords help I will
succeed in explaining how Going they went and they
wept applieth to us all. From the time we are born, we are
coming. For who standeth still? Who is not compelled to
walk, from the moment he came onto the roadway? A baby
is born, and by growing he is walking forward. Death is the
end-point. He shall come away from it shortly, but with
rejoicing. And who doth not weep along this rotten road,
when he began weeping over it as a babe? At any rate, a
babe when born is thrust from the confines of the womb
upon the breadth of this world. From darkness he goeth into
light, and yet, coming from darkness to light, he can weep,
but he cannot laugh. Men both weep and laugh (and men
laugh when they should be weeping!). Now, one man
weepeth over his loss; another weepeth over his straits,
because he is put in prison; another weepeth because he
hath lost one of his dearly-loved kin, who hath died. One
over this; the other over that. What doth the just man weep
about? First, about all these things. For the just man truly
mourneth them that weep fruitlessly. He mourneth them
that weep; he mourneth them that laugh. For they that weep
over vain things weep foolishly, and they that laugh over
vain things laugh to their detriment. So he weepeth on all
sides; therefore he weepeth more than they. But they shall
come with rejoicing, bearing their sheaves. But Thou...

let us exalt His name together. I sought the Lord,
and He heard me : and delivered me from all my

Come ye children, hearken unto me : I will teach

desireth life : who loveth to see good days?
Keep thy tongue from evil : and thy lips from

Psalm 78Deus venrunt
O
God, the heathen are come into Thine
inheritance : they have defiled Thy holy
temple; they have made Jerusalem as it were the
hut of an orchard-keeper. They have made the
dead bodies of Thy servants to be food for the
birds of heaven : the flesh of Thy saints for the
beasts of the earth. They have poured out their
blood like water round about Jerusalem : and
there was none to bury them. We are become a
reproach among our neighbours : a scorn and
derision to them that are round about us. How
long, O Lord, wilt Thou be wroth unto the end :
shall Thy jealousy be kindled like fire? Pour out
Thy wrath upon the nations that know Thee not :
and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon
Thy name. For they have devoured Jacob : and
his place have they made desolate. O remember
not our iniquities of old; let Thy compassions
quickly go before us, O Lord : for we are become
exceedingly poor. Help us, O God our Saviour;
for the sake of the glory of Thy name, O Lord,

deliver us : and be gracious unto our sins for Thy
names sake, Lest haply the nations say : Where
is their God? Yea, make known among the
nations before our eyes : the vengeance for Thy
servants blood which hath been shed. Let there
come before Thee the groaning of them that be in
fetters : according to the greatness of Thine arm,
show Thy care for the sons of the slain. And
render to our neighbours sevenfold into their
bosom their reproach : wherewith they have
reproached Thee, O Lord. For we are Thy people
and the sheep of Thy pasture; we will confess
Thee, O God, for ever : unto generation and
generation we will declare Thy praise. 4 44 44 Glory

Lesson 7. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to
Luke. At that time Jesus, coming down from the mountain,
stood in a plain place, and the company of His disciples, and
a very great multitude of people from all Juda and
Jerusalem, and the sea coast both of Tyre and Sidon, who
were come to hear Him, and to be healed of their diseases.
And the rest. Lk. 6:17
A Sermon from the Commentary of Venerable Bede the
Presbyter. The multitudes that come from afar off to hear
Him are cured by the touch of the Lord descending onto a
flat place. His disciples, since they are now instructed in
lesser things, are elevated to greater things on the top of the
mountain. And from their number are chosen those that
would behold Him transfigured secretly upon the mount.
One of these leaned on the Masters bosom, in order to
drinkmore than all the restfrom the fountainhead of
the wisdom which is most sublime. Now, seldom wilt thou
ever find that crowds followed the Lord to the heights or
that someone sick was healed on a mountain. Nay, rather, it
is when lusts fever is extinguished, and the light of wisdom
kindled, that each one of us doth scale the summit of virtue,
step by step. And He, lifting up His eyes on His disciples,
said: Blessed are ye poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
Yea, even though He speaketh to all in common, yet the
Saviour lifteth up His eyes especially upon His disciples,
that He may more widely open their sight of good sense
who receive His words with their hearts attentive ear. But

Lesson 8. Blessed are the poor, thereforenot all of them,
of course, but only those that reckon all the greatest things
of this present age as naught, though these things seem to be
very great. They are rightly considered worthy of the gift of
the kingdom of heaven, for it is proven that they are bereft
of the greed of human delectation. King David, proclaim-
ing what kind of poverty he had suffered, said, For a poor
man am I and a pauper (Ps. 29:33). And in another passage,

setting little store not only by earthly goods but even by the
supercelestial, in comparison with the Lord, he said, For
what have I in heaven? and besides Thee, what have I
desired upon earth?
1
Right away he revealeth that he hath
settled the anchor of his hope everywhere, when he addeth,
But it is good for me to cleave unto God, to put my hope in
the Lord my God.
2
However, there are those in the most
wretched state of poverty who miss the joys of the world
here, because they are deprived of possessions, and miss
the kingdom of God hereafter, because of the wickedness
of their actions. Blessed are ye that hunger now, for you
shall be filled.
3
What it is the blessed should hunger and
thirst for, Matthew doth explain, namely, righteousness
teaching us very clearly that we should never think we are
righteous enough, but should love daily progress in
righteousness, or rather, ardently desire it. Perfect security
therein can be found not in this world but in that to come.
The Psalmist, aflame with desire for the things of heaven,
showeth this to us when he saith, But as for me, in
righteousness shall I appear before Thy face; I shall be
filled when Thy glory is made manifest unto me.

Lesson 9. Blessed are ye that hunger can also be taken
simply to mean, Ye that chastise your body and reduce it to
service, who in hunger and in thirst give your attention to
the Word, for then ye shall enjoy the full measure of the
heavenly joys which ye possess. Blessed are ye that weep
now, for ye shall laugh.
5
They that weep over the loss of
spiritual virtue, not over the loss of temporal commodities,
shall be comforted with eternal happiness. Here we are
commanded to weep not only for our own sins, but those of
our neighbour too. If we love him as ourselves, it is
necessary consequently that we both rejoice for his
progress, and feel affliction for his failure, and not only be
afflicted but even stirred to tears. For thus did Samuel and
David mourn the sin of Saul and his destruction; thus did
the Lord Himself weep over the sinful city; and being
moved with compassion by the mourning sisters of
Lazarus, whom He was going to resurrect by His Divine
majesty, He first wept for him from human empathy,
mystically signifying that those who are asleep in the death
of sin must be bewailed by their fellow men so that they can
be resuscitated. And the fact that He promiseth those now
weeping shall laugh, must not be taken in an immature
sense. Rather, in the style of Scripture, laughter is to be
understood as signifying a rejoicing of soul and a markedly
more joyful state, as Sara said, God hath made a laughter
for me.
6
And in Job there is said, The mouth of the truthful
shall be filled with laughter.

The Lords word, which we all ought to hear not only with
care but also with wisdom, which it behooveth us to obey
with humility and delight, holding everywhere fast to the
middle path of its moderation, doth command certain things
only to us exclusively, and certain things to us and you in
common, so that the sheep may not lack pasture, nor the
shepherds victuals. For the office of holy preaching is
enjoined uniquely upon usthat is, the servants whom that
Husbandman Who is Lord of all hath established in His
mighty house in order to minister the word of Grace to His
people. But saving obedience to His commandments is
indicated for both you and us. In these commandments, like
unto the tastiest dishes, the spiritual bounty of heavenly
delights is so abundant, that what the perfect can eat may
abound in the word of God, and what can suckle the infant
may likewise abound. But Thou... (other lessons, p. 283)

Lesson 2. There is both the drink of milk with which the
faithfuls tender infancy is fed, and together with it the solid
food whereby the robust youth of the perfect acquireth
growth in holy virtue. There, in short, counsel unto
salvation is given to all those whom the Lord is pleased to
save. There is that which is suitable for every age, what doth
correspond to every profession. There we hear the
commandments we ought to fulfil; there we discover the
gifts for which we hope. There is the command which
teacheth us by writing and instructeth us unto knowledge.
There is the promise which draweth us by grace and leadeth
us to glory. So the Lord, wishing to show His people the

Gospel: Who thinkest thou is the faithful and wise

their measure of wheat in due season? Blessed is that
servant whom, when his lord shall come, he shall find so
doing.

Lesson 3. Who is this lord, brethren? Without doubt it is
Christ, Who said to His disciples, Ye call Me Master and
Lord, and ye say well, for so I am.
3
And what is the
household of this lord? It is without doubt that which the
Lord Himself redeemed from the hand of the enemy and
emancipated by His mastery. This holy family is the
Catholic Church which is spread abroad throughout the
whole round world with abundant fruitfulness, and whose
boast is that she was redeemed by the precious blood of her
Lord. For the Son of Man, as He Himself said, Is not
come to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His
life a redemption for many.
4
And He is the Good Shepherd,
Who hath laid down His life for His sheep. So the flock of
the Good Shepherd is the same as the family, that is, the
household, of our Redeemer. Now who the steward is,
whom it behooveth to be both faithful and wise, the Apostle
Paul showeth us. Speaking of himself and his colleagues,
he said, Let a man so account of us as of the ministers of
Christ and the dispensers of the mysteries of God. Here now
it is required among the dispensers that a man be found
faithful.

supplication : O my King and my God. For unto
Thee will I pray, O Lord : in the morning Thou

not a God that willest iniquity art Thou. He that
worketh evil shall not dwell near Thee : nor shall
transgressors abide before Thine eyes. Thou
hast hated all them that work iniquity : Thou shalt
destroy all them that speak a lie. A man that is
bloody and deceitful shall the Lord abhor : but as
for me, in the multitude of Thy mercy, Shall I go
into Thy house : I shall worship toward Thy holy
temple in fear of Thee. O Lord, guide me in the
way of Thy righteousness because of mine
enemies : make straight my way before Thee.
For in their mouth there is no truth : their heart is
vain. Their throat is an open sepulchre : with
their tongues have they spoken deceitfully; judge
them, O God. Let them fall down on account of
their own devisings; according to the multitude
of their ungodliness, cast them out : for they have
embittered Thee, O Lord. And let all them be
glad that hope in Thee : they shall ever rejoice,
and Thou shalt dwell among them. And all shall

Lesson 5. We give you a measure of this wheat on behalf
of the Lord, as often as we are enlightened by the gift of
spiritual grace and address you according to the rule of true
faith. And ye receive that same measure of wheat through
the Lords stewards when by means of Gods servants ye do
hear the word of truth. Now we speak of that measure of
wheat, that we all may be fed with it, according as God hath
divided it. Thus let us take the nourishment of a good life,
that we may attain the gifts of life eternal, believing in Him,
trusting in Him, loving Him above all things and in all
things. For He giveth us Himself as nourishment lest we
faint in the way, and He preserveth our reward so that we
may rejoice in our homeland. For Christ is our nourish-

comfort of believers upon their journey. He is the fullness

therefore to this measure of wheat doth that pertain which

Lesson 6. We are trees, brethren, established in the Lords
field. And God is our husbandmanour farmer. It is He
that watereth us, He that cultivateth us, He that giveth us
fruitfulness, He that supplieth the grace for us to bear fruit.
Gods rain is the word of holy preaching; Gods cultivating
is the infusion of spiritual grace. So God watereth us by His
commandments, He cultivateth us by helping us. When He
is watering, He taketh from us the blindness of ignorance,
and when He is cultivating us, He is granteth us the richness
of a good life. When He watereth, he irrigateth the soil of
our heart, and when He cultivateth us, He uprooteth from
that ground the thorns and thistles of worldly greed. We
must become fruitful, therefore, by heavenly rainfall. We

bear the same fruits, no tree should remain barren in the
Lords field. We should greatly fear that threatening

not yield good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.
3
Now if barrenness is cast into the fire, what will thievery

away his own goods? And if there will be judgment without

A Homily of Blessed Gregory the Pope. The reading of
the Holy Gospel warneth us, dearly beloved brethren, to
take careful heed, lest we who seem to have received in this
world something more than others should, on that account,
be judged more severely by the worlds Creator. For when
gifts are multiplied, the explanations that must be given for
the gifts are also multiplied. Therefore, according to the
gifts he hath received, each man must be humbler, and more
prompt to serve God, since he seeth that he is more obliged
to give an explanation. Behold, the man going into a far
country calleth his servants and divideth talents among
them with which to trade. And after much time he returneth
to demand a reckoning. Those that have done good, he
rewardeth for the increase they have brought. But He

Lesson 8. Now who is this man going into a far country, if

for flesh is the earth, and it was taken for a journey, as it
were, when it was placed in heaven by our Redeemer. But
this man, going into a far country, delivered his goods to his
servants, because He gave spiritual gifts to His faithful.
And in fact He gave five talents to one; two to another; and
one to another. For our bodily senses are five, namely sight,
hearing, taste, smell, and touch. So the gift of the five
talents meaneth the five senses, that is, knowledge of
outward things. And by the two, understanding and action
are denoted. But by the name of one talent, understanding
alone is signified. Now he that had received five talents
gained five more, because there are those who while they
