1. Complete these sentences with can, may, will or must (positive or negative).
a. Most birds can fly.
b. Most animals cant fly.
c. We may be a bit late this evening, Im not sure.

e. Secretary wanted - Must speak good English.
f. If you speak your own language in England, most people wont understand you.

2. Complete these sentences with will, might, cant or must.
a. Next Monday will be my 30th birthday.
b. I might go to Spain next week, but Im not sure yet.
c. Isnt that J oan over there? No, it cant be her J oans much taller than that.
d. Theres somebody at the door. Do you think it will be the postman?
e. Ive been travelling since four oclock. You must be tired.
f. We havent made definite plans for our holiday yet. We might go to Greece or Italy, or we
will even stay at home.
g. This must be J ohns coat. Theres a letter addressed to him in the pocket.
h. Im getting married next week. You cant mean it! I do.
3. Complete the following sentences with a form of have to or should. Sometimes the verb forms
are negative.
a. Your hairs too long. I think you should get it cut.
b. You smell, and youve got a cough. You dont have to smoke.
c. Im going to bed. I must be up early tomorrow.
d. Id like to meet your boyfriend. You should invite him round.
e. I have to tell my parents where I am, and then they dont worry.
f. You dont have to come with me if you dont want to. Ill go on my own.
g. If you need some help with your homework, you should go to the library.
h. If youve got a ticket, you dont have to queue. You can go straight in.
i. You shouldnt tell lies. Its naughty.

4. Make each sentence uncertain by using the word given in brackets.

5. Rewrite each sentence without changing the meaning, beginning as given.
a. He cant be here yet.

b. He might not know the answer.
Perhaps he doesnt know the answer.
c. Theres a chance that Ill win the competition.

d. Im sure the baker is the murderer.
The baker must be the murderer.

6. Choose the most suitable expression in each sentence.
