Dozens of volunteers gathered at the Dr. James Still Education Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Day for a service project. Community
members young and old cleaned up the property as part of an ongoing beautification project.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day
2013, the old Bunning farmhouse
was a building sitting along
Church Road, dilapidated and in
need of many repairs.
One year later, hundreds of vol-
unteers came to work on the prop-
erty as part of a service project.
In one years time, the farmhouse
looks completely different, as it
has been transformed into the Dr.
James Still Historic Office Site
and Education Center.
The education center was cre-
ated to teach the story of Still, a
former slave who became a doc-
tor in the mid-1800s and educated
himself in using plants and herbs
to cure ailments. The treatment
was revolutionary at the time,
and Stills office where he did
much of his work sits next to the
site of the education center.
Janet Carlson Giardina has
been supervising the project for
the historical society and is now
the educational coordinator at the
center.
I cant even describe how
much time and effort has gone
into this project, Giardina said.
In June, the Medford Historical
Society acquired a special use
permit for the Bunning family
farm, at 211 Church Road. For the
next three months, volunteers do-
nated money and time toward the

The New Jersey State Polices
end-of-the-year Uniform Crime
Report spelled both good and bad
news in Medford Township.
According to the report for
2013, crime in Medford dropped
approximately 4 percent from
2012, with 310 total crimes last
year compared to 323 the previous
year.
Despite the good overall num-
bers, there was some concern as
the township saw a 10.2 percent
increase in burglaries and three
robberies in 2013.
Police Chief Richard Meder
said both numbers are higher
than normal. He cited a few fac-
tors as the cause of the increase.
Thats a combination of a cou-
ple different things, Meder said.
You can attribute some of it to
the high price of gold. A lot is also
attributed to the drug epidemic.
Meder said the high price of
gold is causing more criminals to
break into residences and other
private property. They steal jewel-
ry and other valuables to sell at
secondhand shops and come
away with some quick cash.
Meder also said an increase in
drug activity throughout South
Jersey has consequently bumped
up burglary numbers.
In Medford, there were two
armed robberies and one strong-
armed robbery in 2013. The town-
ships increase in robberies from
one in 2012 to three last year is a
trend throughout many Burling-
ton County communities. Bank
robberies in particular have been
on the rise countywide, according
to Meder.
Theres a significant amount
of bank robberies throughout the
county, he said.
The Medford Police offer tips
throughout the year to residents
about securing belongings and
preventing their homes from
being robbed.
Lock your cars doors, dont
leave valuables where you can see
them, Meder said. Let people
know that youre not going to be
home. Let us know that youre not
going to be home so that we can
keep a look out for you.
Another factor leading to a
spike in burglaries is the infor-
mation residents put out on the
Internet and through social
media. Meder said criminals are
frequently online searching for
an opportunity to strike when
residents are most vulnerable.
You have to minimize the in-
formation youre putting out
there, he said.
Meder also encourages resi-
dents to call the police depart-
ment when something seems out
of the ordinary. He said it is com-
mon for residents to not call the
police department about some-
thing small when a major event
could be taking place.
One of the things that we try
and get out of people is when you
see something out of the ordi-
nary, call us and tell us, he said.
Overall, Meder said he uses the
Uniform Crime Report mainly as
a way to track crime in the town-
ship from year-to-year.

C
hris Christie took his second
oath of office as governor of
New Jersey last week amid lit-
tle fanfare and hub-bub.
Maybe it was because, much like his
re-election last November, the ceremo-
nial oath and accompanying speech
have become matter-of-course. Maybe
it was because he is a second-term gov-
ernor, and not newly-elected to the
post. Or maybe it was because he gave
the speech during last weeks snow-
storm.
Whatever the reason, the oath was
given the mandatory press coverage it
deserved, and was passed off as anoth-
er speech in what is expected to be
Christies two-year-long push for U.S.
president come 2016.
For the most part, Christie avoided
outright references to his potential po-
litical aspirations or the Bridgegate
scandal, and even sounded more tepid
than his usual brash self.
His overarching theme was unity: A
unified New Jersey is better than a dis-
connected one on the road for econom-
ic growth and a better life for all New
Jerseyans. But he didnt miss an op-
portunity to use the partisan politics of
our nations capital as a warning sign
of what New Jersey should not be-
come...
We honor the strength of our diver-
sity, because we cannot fall victim to
the attitude of Washington, D.C. the
attitude that says I am always right,
and you are always wrong; the atti-
tude that puts everyone into a box that
they are not permitted to leave; the at-
titude that puts political victories
ahead of policy agreements; the belief
that compromise is a dirty word.
...We can put the future of our state
ahead of the partisans who would
rather demonize than compromise. As
your governor, I will always be willing
to listen, as long as that listening ends
in decisive action for the people who
are counting on us to do our job.
Love him, hate him or stand some-
where in the middle, Christie is right,
we do need decisive action on taxes,
jobs, health care, safety and education.
New Jerseyans need help, and we
dont need it from Republicans or De-
mocrats we need it from our govern-
ment, regardless of the political party.
in our opinion
New Jersey as a unified force
Gov. Christies oath of office preaches non-partisan action, unlike D.C.
Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on Gov. Christies
oath of office speech? Do you agree with
his unified theme? Do you believe he was
angling for a run at president? Let your
thoughts be heard in a letter to the editor.
Resident grateful for kindness
of stranger during heart attack
On Sunday, Jan. 20, a year ago, I had a se-
rious heart attack at the deli section in
Murphy's Market, Taunton Forge, Medford.
I didn't even know I was having a heart
attack!
If it weren't for the quick and compas-
sionate actions of a fellow shopper, I might
not be here today. She quietly took com-
plete control of the situation and made
sure I was taken to the emergency room at
the nearest hospital.
Having asked for her name, she told me
Lorraine; I'm an RN. When I got home
from the hospital three weeks later (after
double bypass surgery) I began my search
to find Lorraine, RN. No luck.
I wish I could pay back her kindness in
person, but now the least I can do is to give
this public thank you to a lady who was the
consummate nurse and made a real differ-
ence in my life.

UCR, we look at them for compar-
ison issues, he said. Its a good
way to compare year-to-year.
Since 2011, when the township
had an increase in crime, crime
has dropped each year. The drop
in crime came while the police
department went through a sig-
nificant restructuring and down-
sizing effort alongside other
township departments.
Meder attributes the polices
success to its increased visibility
and communication with resi-
dents.
We have a very good relation-
ship with our community in shar-
ing information, he said. Were
trying to be visible, were trying
to engage the community.
With an increased presence on
its website, Facebook and Nixle,
Meder hopes the community will
continue to work hand-in-hand
with the police department in
continuing to prevent crime in
Medford.
