Zolpidem: Uses, Dosage, and Effects

Zolpidem is a sedative used to treat insomnia. It works by binding to GABA receptors in the brain. It is rapidly absorbed orally and converted to inactive metabolites that are eliminated by the kidneys. Onset of action is within 15 minutes for an oral tablet and peak effect occurs within 2 hours. It is prescribed for short-term treatment of insomnia and contraindicated in those with sleep apnea or hypersensitivity. Common side effects include drowsiness and dizziness. Nurses monitor patients for drowsiness and mental status changes after administration.
