GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH

(Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod) LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS January 19, 2014

THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

PRAYER UPON ENTERING CHURCH
Lord Jesus Christ, You are the Lamb of God who takes away my sin and the sin of the world. As my Savior You have delivered me from sin, death and the devil and brought me into the light of Your grace. Keep me steadfast in my faith that receives all of the blessings you have freely given to me and grant that I might reflect Your light to others as I live my life in service to You and my neighbor. I pray this in Your holy name. Amen

WELCOME
Welcome to Grace! It is indeed good for you to be here today in this season of the Church Year known as the season of Epiphany. Epiphany is all about Jesus Christ being revealed as Messiah to and for the nations as promised by God through the prophets in the Old Testament. Jesus is the Christ, He is God in flesh made manifest. We ask that everyone fill out an attendance registration card found at each pew and return it to an Usher as the Offering is collected. Restrooms are located on the lower level of this building or across the bridge on this floor level before entering the fellowship hall. If you have any questions please ask one of our greeters or ushers. Children are welcome in our Service and will be invited to come forward for a Childrens Message. Parents may accompany them. A nursery for infants and toddlers is located downstairs for anyone who has need.

HOLY COMMUNION
Holy Communion will be celebrated in our 10:45 Service today. In this sacrament we receive Christs very body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. Those who are not members of Grace are asked to speak with our Pastor before partaking of this sacrament so that the unity of faith might be established. Thank you for honoring this request.

AS WE GATHER
Epiphany immerses us in learning about what it means for all nations to be invited and embraced by the grace of God found in the person and work of Jesus for all people. In this season of our Church Year, the Epistle and Gospel readings are frequently sequential from one Sunday to the next. The purpose of these continuous readings is for us to become deeply familiar with portions of Holy Scripture that teach about the identity of Jesus. This weeks Holy Gospel reading, John 1:2942a, follows up on last weeks revelation of the Baptism of Jesus. 1st Corinthians 1:1-9 is the first of many throughout Epiphany drawn from St. Pauls letter to the church at Corinth. The Apostle exhorts the Corinthians to be one in faith and love, always confessing and teaching that salvation is in Christ alone. In Him we have been called to faith by the Holy Spirit through the Means of Grace to be His disciples even as we have been made heirs of everlasting life through the forgiveness of sins.

THE ALTAR FLOWERS The Altar Flowers are given today to the glory of God and the beautification of His house by Verna and Shirley Rieve in memory of their mother Mrs. Alvira Rieve and in thanksgiving for Gods many blessings. Psalm 40:111 (antiphon: v. 3)

P He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. C Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD. P I waited patiently for the LORD; C he inclined to me and heard my cry. P He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, C and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. P He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. C Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD. P Blessd is the man who makes the LORD his trust, C who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie! P You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! C I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.

-5-

P Sacrifice and offering you have not desired, but you have given me an open ear. C Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required. P Then I said, Behold, I have come; C in the scroll of the book it is written of me: P I desire to do your will, O my God; C your law is within my heart. P I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; C behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O LORD. P I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; C I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation. P As for you, O LORD, you will not restrain your mercy from me; C your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me! C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen P He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. C Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.

Collect of the Day

P Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, who governs all things in heaven and on earth, mercifully hear the prayers of Your people and grant us Your peace through all our days; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Prayer of the Church

P Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Each petition ends with the following: P C Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

The prayers conclude with the following: P C Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

Collect for Grace

P O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, You have safely brought us to the beginning of this day. Defend us in the same with Your mighty power and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger, but that all our doings, being ordered by Your governance, may be righteous in Your sight; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
