THE LORDS BAPTISM SIGNIFIES NEW CREATION
Today in the liturgy we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. As described in the gospel, John baptized Jesus. After he was baptized, he came up from the water and the heavens were opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him. A voice came from the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Jesus has no need for this baptism of repentance since He did not commit any sin, but He freely submitted to Johns baptism in the name of sinful humanity. Sin is at the center of Jesus submission to be baptized, and in doing this, He did not only forgive sin, He changed the whole meaning of creation. He brought a new era in creation. Recall the creation story in Genesis. The Spirit of God hovered over the waters. This describes the beginning of creation. The first creation brought forth the first man Adam. St. Paul compares Adam and Jesus, the former was a man of the earth and Jesus came from heaven. Adams sin caused the heavens to close, but Jesus caused the heavens to be opened again and God the Fathers own words confirm His Sons identity. Adam brought sin to the world, but Jesus brought grace and washed away all sins as symbolized by his baptism. From these connections and symbolisms of the Old and New Testament events: God, the Creator, the Spirit, the water, Adam and Jesus, the heavens opened again for man, we may conclude that Jesus baptism marks a new era in human history. This new era was ushered in by Jesus Christ, the new Adam who came from the Father to reverse the curse of sin and death by his own death and resurrection.
