Generator Bearing Replacement Guide

This document provides a method statement for replacing the generator bearings on a wind turbine. It outlines 4 main steps: 1) Isolating the generator and removing covers to access the drive end bearing. 2) Removing the drive end bearing using a hydraulic press after heating it, and installing the new bearing. 3) Repeating step 2 for the non-drive end bearing. 4) Testing the generator by bringing it up to speed and measuring vibrations.

Method Statement Generator bearing replacement

1. Replacing the generator bearing Engage the rotor lock. Before work on the generator commences, it must be insulated. When isolation is complete the electrical connections to the generator must be checked using a proven dead meter to ensure they are not live. Remove the main generator cover

2. Removing the drive end bearing Attach the extension to the nacelle crane. Then fix a block and tackle to this. Remove encoder. Remove rotor end cover. Disconnect slip ring cables and place hydraulic pack between slip ring and generator and remove the Slipring Remove rotor housing and place on bed plate. Remove generator plate. Remove the bearing cover by loosening the bolts at the front of the generator. Insert the fixing bolts/pins into the front cover and attach the clamp. Screw bolt into the shaft end and attach the enerpac. Heat the bearing slowly using a torch. Ensure compliance with GE Hot Work Permitting Process. Position the clamp in order that the enerpac can drive against it. Pump the enerpac while ensuring the bearing is freeing itself and moving along the shaft. With bearing free, remove it from the shaft taking care as it will still be warm. (ensure correct PPE is in place) Heat new bearing gently using a torch and place on the shaft.

Push into place using light force. Ensure correct positioning of bearing and replace end cover.

3. Removing the non drive end bearing Remove the bearing end cover by loosening the bolts at the rear of the generator. Insert the fixing bolts/pins into the end cover and attach the clamp. Screw bolt into the shaft end and attach the enerpac. Heat the bearing slowly using a torch. Position the clamp in order that the enerpac can drive against it. Pump the enerpac while ensuring the bearing is freeing itself and moving along the shaft. With bearing free, remove it from the shaft taking care as it will be warm. (ensure correct PPE is in place) Heat new bearing gently using a torch and place the on shaft. Push into place using light force. Ensure correct positioning of bearing and replace end cover. Replace all covers ensuring all tools have been removed from the area.

4. Testing generator Power up breakers and put turbine into system OK. Call GE Remote. Bring Geneartor speed to 1000Rpm Measure vibration from the generator and ensure it is within recommended limits.
