Fiji Agriculture Journal Launched

The recent launch of an agricultural journal by the Agriculture Ministry will position government to boost its agricultural reforms. The Ministrys permanent secretary Ropate Ligairi, on behalf of the Minister for Agriculture, launched one of the once highly reputable agriculture, fisheries and forestry journal in the Pacific region, the Fiji Agricultural Journal at Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi. While speaking at the launch, Mr Ligairi said the journey to revive the Fiji Agricultural Journal started few years ago but the real urge became apparent early this year at one of the senior research staff meetings. This is one of the initiatives of the Research Council of the Ministry of Agriculture. The Fiji Agricultural Journal published its first volume in 1928 and have published 52 volumes altogether. It is the publication of the Ministry of Agriculture, published its last volume 17 years ago, said Mr Ligairi. The role of the Fiji Agricultural Journal is to publish scientific articles, invited commentary/insight papers, state of the art review articles, short notes, book reviews, conference reports, and a calendar of forthcoming events in the field of agriculture, fisheries and forestry in Fiji, and from the rest of the Pacific Islands Countries and Territories. The revival of this journal will not only contribute to the reform process of sharing knowledge and information but also supporting and enhancing a knowledgeable society. Words of Wisdom state that people perish because of lack of knowledge. Sharing and appropriately utilizing knowledge and experience gained promotes growth physically, financially, spiritually and socially. The value of the Fiji Agricultural Journal is enormous. Sharing knowledge, ideas and evidence of research work is essential in this time and age. It will not only enhance capacity in research and scholarly writing, but will also promote our ministry as a whole. Documenting such information is vital to ensure they are stored in forms that could be easily retrieved and used. The Fiji Agricultural Journal will be publishing two issues each year from 2014 and will be available both in print and in electronic format at the Ministry of Agricultures website, Mr Ligairi said. I would like to encourage agriculture, fisheries and forestry researchers, policy makers and practitioners in Fiji to publish their work in the Fiji Agricultural Journal to help others get easy access to information and knowledge. Mr Ligairi thanked the Chief Editor and the Editorial Board members for their collective efforts and commitment in reviving this journal and having Volume 53 published, and launched.

Fijians Await Evacuation Orders

Fifteen Fijians with the United Nations in South Sudan are awaiting the United Nations evacuation orders. The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Land Force Commander Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga said the UN had started evacuation of its personnel which included the six RFMF men. The UN is in control and if it issues an evacuation order, we will abide by it, Colonel Tikoitoga said. For the Fiji Corrections Service (FSC), Commissioner Lieutenant-Colonel Ifereimi Vasu said they had an officer, Ana Talawadua in South Sudan. He confirmed she was in good health and in contact with the other Fijians within the UN. Eight officers from the Fiji Police Force are currently in Sudan. Police chief operations officer Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rusiate Tudravu has also been in contact with his officers. ACP Tudravu said none of the Fijians were injured. A report from South Sudan said hundreds of people had been killed in a week of fighting, which had spread from Juba to oil fields further North. South Sudan president, Salva Kiir blamed soldiers loyal to his former vice-president, Riek Machar, for starting the violence. The United Nations (UN) said last Friday that 35,000 people were seeking refuge at its bases in three locations across the country, including 20,000 at two bases in the capital. Several hundred people were also seeking shelter in Bentiu.

Fijian soldiers who survived a motor accident on the Golan Heights last month said the RG31 armored vehicle they were traveling in encountered mechanical problems. The RG31 vehicle which is being used by Fiji personnel is said to be almost two decade old. According to an RFMF media report there were five personnel in the vehicle at the time of the incident on the weekend of 16-17 November. The vehicle overturned, the impact of which tossed the army personnel back and forth that they sustained serious injuries externally and internally. They were taken to Camp Faouar Medical Center before they were referred to Ziv Hospital in Zefat, Israel the next day for enhancement treatment. A Fiji government released statement following the incident said three of the soldiers sustained minor injuries

and were released. One of the soldiers suffered spinal fracture. According to the militarys media unit, there have also been other cases of motor mishaps involving Fijian soldiers in the past three months. All casualties have been treated at the UNDOF Medical Center including a heart attack case and locals who were treated for gunshot wounds, accident and burns. Once stabilised, the injured locals are transferred to Damascus for further treatment. Following the incidents, Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel S. T. Qiliho moved to elevate FijiBATTs health and safety precautionary measures, including their safety when travelling on board the RG31. These safety measures adopted by the FijiBATT include conducting monthly BMI, routine medical examination, and health advocacy.

PNG Firm Anticipates Big Returns From Investment

will increase the returns, Mr Mano said. A big boost to Pacific Harbour as a tourism hub came early the past month through a major investment by PNGs Papua New Guineas Mineral Resources Development Company. It came with the opening of the Pacific Bar and Grill at the clubhouse as part of the The Pearl Championship Golf 4 Courses upgrade. As new owners of The Pearl South Pacific Resort, Spa and Championship 4 Golf Course, Mineral Resources Development Company was invested US$99 million in the property. Come 2015, the investment would complete three phases of constructionbuilding for the property. These are the marina, which is expected to open next month and the building of the new wing and renovation of the old wing of the resort. Fijian tourism potential Mr Mano said they made the investment because of their diversification. Its like you have the Lamana group and NASFUND, who are doing their own investment in Fiji ours is similar, he said. For us its part of diversification and also in terms of our influence in the Pacific. The returns at the end of the day is the economic decision. In Fiji it has to do with tourism. Tourism is like their heart just like PNGs mining and petroleum.

A view of The Pearl South Pacific Resort, Spa and Championship Golf Courses swimming pool Papua New Guineas Mineral Resources Development Company (MRDC) is anticipating big returns from its major investment in a property development project in Fiji. Chief executive and managing director Augustine Mano said the recent investment in The Pearl South Pacific Resort, Spa and Championship Golf Course was big and would increase returns. After looking at the investment proposal, we thought it is a very good investment and were convinced that it

FMF Chow Mascot (left) Santa Claus and a Fijian warrior with FMF Foods Limited staff members spreading the joy of Christmas and sharing a light joyous moment at the company factory in Walu Bay, Suva FMF Foods Limited has announced plans to expand its already wide variety of product range to grow its market regionally. Group chief executive Ram Bajekal said: We are hoping that come 2014, there will be new and interesting products line to grow our market in the region. At the moment, we have 140 products. Some are available exclusively for our overseas markets while about 60 products are available locally. But while they are trying to expand the product range, FMF Foods is still facing competition in terms of one of its significant products, biscuits. We are currently facing a lot of competition with biscuit as it is a snack which is in competition to various other products available in the same market, Mr Bajekal said. We face stiff competition in Australia because its our biggest export market. FMF Foods plans to combat competition by pursuing quality and producing a growing variety of products. New silos Mr Bajekal revealed that at the moment the company was investing over $10 million into six small wheat silos. This new project started a few months ago so phase one will finish by February and the second phase ends in August, he said. Christmas Initiative Meanwhile, Mr Bajekal yesterday accompanied Santa Claus to spread the joy of Christmas amongst his staff members in Suva. He communicated with his 941 staff on the overall view of the business and compared this year with the past year. We use an event like this to meet employees and thank them for their hard work and commitment in making and meeting company requirements for the year, Mr Bajelal said. I personally went to talk to the staff to ask their view on what they have enjoyed about the company this year, any improvements to be done, what they dislike and where they see the company in the future.

52 Year Old Dies In Blaze

A 52-year-old died after his twobedroom house caught fire at Bau Road in Nausori. Ami Chand was found after firefighters doused the fire on the wooden and corrugated iron home. Chief Executive Officer of the National Fire Authority John OConnor said they had received a fire call at midnight on Wednesday and by the time they reached the house it was in flames. He said they thought the house had been empty only noticing the body after the fire had been put out. Police are investigating.

PA Lal Coachwork Limited has invested heavily in its workforce, rewarding workers for years of dedication and service to the company at its annual long service awards in Suva recently. And according to managing director Richard Lal, the company spent $163,000 in cash rewards and presented 140 awards over the past 18 years. "The total years of service for all the awards being presented is 330 and it goes without saying the amount is substantial, and the years of service is exceptional," he said.

Incentives For Workers

"This year 19 awards were presented with $42,000 in cash rewards, gold watches and plaques. Five awards were given to workers for 10 years of service. Those team members received $500 cash and a plaque." Mr Lal said four awards were given to workers with 15 years of service and each recipient received $1000 and a plaque. Eight awards were given to those with 20 years of service while two awards were given to members with 30 years of service and $3000.

Seeto is part of the newly appointed Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board (TSLB) which includes the vice chancellors of USP, FNU and University of Fiji as well as the Permanent Secretary for Education, Dr Brij Lal. A government statement said the TSLB will oversee the new Tertiary Scholarship (TOPPERS) and Tertiary Education Loan Scheme (TELS) programs which reorganises all scholarship and loan programs into one overall scheme, replacing the current iTaukei, Multi-Ethnic and PSC Scholarships. Through the new intiative government hopes to open up the opportunity of acquiring tertiary study scholarships and loans to all students. RESIDENTS and children of Dilkusha Children's Home were treated to an early Christmas last week as members of the Digicel Fiji office in Suva visited them bearing gifts and goodies. The children were given snacks, drinks and presents by the visiting group, who did this annually during Christmas. The home's secretary said the children were very happy to have visitors and grateful for the presents and goods they brought. "They come every year and it's always something the children look forward to. They told us that at this time of the year, it's important to share and care with one another," she said.

Christmas Cheer For Home

The Digicel team also visited St Christopher's Home and the Old People's Home. The mobile service provider said Christmas was a time of giving back and thinking of the ones who were unfortunate in society. In keeping with the festive spirit, the company recently launched a Christmas song for Fiji and the Pacific. With no promotional techniques attached to the song, Digicel says they wanted to bring the Christmas spirit to families in Fiji and the Pacific. Digicel Fiji head of marketing Sheryl Singh said the music video was shot around the country and featured Pacific talents.

The Warwick Fiji Resort and Spa is undergoing multi-million dollar refurbishment and renovation. The newly-appointed general manager Dean Swaagman revealed plans for the resort during the annual staff party this week. Mr Swaagman said the owners of the resort were mindful of the state the resort was currently in. He said they had decided to make the investment to upgrade the resort to its former glory. While Mr Swaagman was not in a position to reveal the amount that is being invested, he said it was substantial and ran into millions. The Suva-wing of the resort is undergoing a complete upgrade and has been closed off. The renovation is expected to be completed by March. Prior to joining Warwick Fiji Resort and Spa, Mr Swaagman had experience working in Fiji when he was with the Peark Resort. He also has some ten years experience working in the region. Staff training Apart from the investment in the resort, human resource upgrade is also high on Mr Swaagmans agenda.

Having worked in locales such as Bali, Mr Swaagman said Fiji was a unique destination because of its people. He said the management was mindful of this and to capitalise further on this aspect, they were keen to provide further training to its staff. Mr Swaagman said people came to Fiji for its people. A 22-year-old woman has been charged with two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder following the brutal attacks on a mother and her four children which led to the deaths of 33-year-old Sisi Taofa Patolo and seven-month-old Sarah Patolo near Viseisei Village. Priya Darshani appeared before Magistrate Peni Dalituicama in a special court hearing at the Lautoka Magistrates Court. Mr Dalituicama told the court that he did not have jurisdiction over such a serious case. The matter has been transferred to the High Court in Lautoka for mention on January 24, 2014 when the DPP will make a decision on the charges. The accused was remanded in custody until her next appearance. In a police statement, police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro stated

According to the report, the Jewish state has not made a decision yet although they are considering Fiji's request. "Police received a report from health authorities that a woman and her child were brought to the hospital and were pronounced dead on arrival. The incident is alleged to have occurred sometime between 10am-12pm last Wednesday. "The deceased and the suspect were staying in the same house with another 31-year-old man in a de-facto relationship." Ms Naisoro stated. Ms Naisoro said "the 22-year-old woman alleged to have caused the death of a 33-year-old woman and her seven-month-old baby in Viseisei, Lautoka has been charged. Clauses from the Yash Ghai draft that were not retained in the 2013 Constitution [that was assented to by President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau in September] had to go, says Fijis Prime Minister and Military Commander Voreqe Bainimarama. In his address to soldiers during a Christmas church service at the QEB Barracks in Nabua, the head of government said the clauses that were removed, just like the GCC concept, would have encouraged more racism. Only those clauses that will help Fiji move forward were retained, Bainimarama said. Those that were taken out did not

A-G says more Fijians registered to vote now than at any time in Fijis history The Attorney-General and Minister Responsible for Elections, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, has criticised what he describes as an attempt to turn the voter registration process into a political issue. And he blames some politicians, saying they are undermining the process by using false and outdated numbers to get attention for themselves. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum was referring in particular to a statement released by the Fiji Labour Party on Monday. Mr Sayed-Kaiyum pointed out that contrary to Labours claims more Fijians were registered to vote now than at any time in Fijis history. He said this was made possible by the efforts of the Elections Office and the use of the new electronic voter registration system. As of the end of November, more than 540,000 Fijians have registered to vote in next years election, Mr SayedKhaiyum said. This registration process is more successful, transparent and precise than any before. It is designed to avoid the anomalies and fraud that took place in past elections. Next year, the Elections Office plans another phase of voter registration to sign up all eligible Fijians who want to vote, including those who have only recently turned 18. Labour claims Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry had claimed that 20 per cent of eligible voters have not yet registered. The Fiji Labour Party statement said: According to official figures the eligible voter population at 30th June 2013 stood at 628,000 of which 505,600 have been registered, leaving 122,400 (20 per cent) yet to be registered. The highest number of unregistered voters are from the provinces of Ba, Naitasiri, Macuata and Nadroga/ Navosa. In Ba, 35,800 voters have not been registered 20 per cent of the voting population; in Naitasiri 33,058 (27 per cent) are left to register; in Macuata about 12,000 (22 per cent) and in Nadroga/Navosa 9148 which is 21 per cent of the eligible voters. On the island of Rotuma 26 per cent of voters, 359 of a total of 1461 voters, are yet to be registered. When contacted to verify how the figures were obtained, a spokesperson for the party said it was from the Government.

No religion should be more favoured than any other when it comes to the running of the nations affairs, Fiji's President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau says. In his Christmas message, the head of government seized the opportunity to stress the right of each person to manifest and practice their religion or belief individually or in community as stipulated in section 22 of the Bill Of Rights of the 2013 Constitution. But while Fijians have this right, they do not have the right to force their beliefs on others, Ratu Epeli said. "I say all of this because there is evidently some confusion about the true constitutional provision. "This is precisely the right that Christians are enjoying as they gather throughout Fiji to celebrate the birth of their lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. "And the whole nation joins them

in that celebration. Now, more than ever, the Christian message of love, compassion and tolerance needs to be centre stage in our national life, along with the similar messages of our other great religions." He reminded all about the Christmas message to love one another and be humble persons. Ratu Epeli also remembered men and women serving the country overseas in uniform, as diplomats or as civilian volunteers saying that the thoughts and prayers of all Fijians are with them this Christmas, as they are with the loved oned they left behind. Since last week, Ratu Epeli has been travelling around the country to spread the Christmas cheer to children in hospitals and orphanages , adult patients as well as prisoners serving time in prison centres around the country.

VICTIMS of the robbery in Kinoya were still in a state of shock after they lost almost everything in an early morning break-in. Savita Devi said they were held captives in their own house while five men allegedly took money, jewellery, canteen groceries and drove away with their car. When a team from this newspaper visited the family, relatives were gathered at the residence to provide comfort for the family who went through the traumatic experience. "When they entered the house, they told us to pull down all the curtains and remain silent or they will hit us," Mrs Devi said. "They tied my husband's hands and warned him to keep quiet or they will

"The men in masks cut the fence outside, opened the gate and the door with pinch bar. We could not do anything because they were heavily armed." Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro confirmed the robbery incident saying they were after information that could lead to any arrest. Ms Naisoro confirmed they had located the stolen vehicle abandoned in Nepani while they continued the hunt for the suspects. She said their investigations were now continuing.

Out of the 32 families who moved in last week, 24 who live in twobedroom units are charged $40 a week, five families who have taken up the 3-bedroom units are charged $50 a week and owners of the five elderly and disable units are charged $25 a week. These families are expected to pay their share of building costs, amounting to $12,000, in 12 years before they can own the homes.

Families Pay Up To $50 Weekly For New Homes

Father Kevin Barr, the Peoples Community Network Consultant said that the weekly payments in addition to grants received will be used to build homes for another 120 families next year. The families have also agreed to the payment arrangement. Its affordable for them, Father Barr said. They were overjoyed knowing they would Christmas in their new homes. Moving in last week ended a three-year wait for the 32 families who in 2010 had vacated their homes to move to temporary dwellings or take up shelter with relatives to allow for construction works.

Retired teachers from Fiji are expected to be in Vanuatu early February to take up teaching posts at secondary schools there despite objections from the Vanuatu Teachers Union. Bangladesh Police Charge 13 Over Tazreen Garment Factory Fire In November Last Year
Bangladesh police have laid the first charges over the nation's deadliest-ever garment factory fire 13 months ago, accusing the owners and 11 others of an offence punishable by life imprisonment. Police charged owners Delwar Hossain and his wife, along with security guards and managers, over the blaze that killed 111 people and gutted the Tazreen factory where workers stitched clothes for Western retailers. "Delwar and his wife Mahmuda Akter ... and 11 others have been charged with death due to negligence," A.K.M. Mohsinuzzaman Khan, the police investigator in the case, told AFP. The factory on the outskirts of Dhaka supplied clothes to a variety of international brands including US giant Walmart, Dutch retailer C&A and ENYCE, a label owned by US rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs. The fire in November 2012 was the country's worst at a garment factory and shone an international spotlight on appalling safety conditions in an industry worth more than $20 billion. The industry suffered a far worse tragedy just months later when the Rana Plaza garment factory complex collapsed in Dhaka's outskirts, killing 1,135 people in the world's worst industrial disaster. Bangladesh pledged to clean up the industry after that disaster in April, and more than 100 top Western retailers have signed up to new safety agreements to allow greater scrutiny of their operations. Victims of the factory fire, mostly women who were paid as little as $37 a month, found themselves overcome by smoke or jumped from windows on upper floors of the nine-storey factory warehouse. Managers and security guards were charged because they forced workers to return to their duties even though smoke was billowing from the ground floor where the fire started on November 24, said Khan, the police investigator. "Fire alarms rang as soon as the blaze broke out. Panicked workers tried to leave the factory before the fire spread," Khan said. "But the managers and the security guards told the workers that it was nothing serious." Khan said it was "possibly the first time" a garment plant owner has been charged over a fire at one of the nation's 4,500 factories, where deadly accidents are common. Factory owners are rarely charged over such tragedies in the sector, which is a mainstay of the impoverished country's economy, accounting to up to 80 percent of Bangladesh's exports. The 13 people are charged with committing culpable homicide not amounting to murder and causing death due to negligence, said police Inspector Mohammad Asaduzzaman. A magistrate and prosecutors will scrutinise the charge sheet, filed with the senior judicial magistrate's court in Dhaka, at a hearing on December 31 to decide whether to proceed with a trial against the 13 and issue arrest warrants. All 13 could face life in prison if convicted. The owner, who since the tragedy has been barred from leaving the country, has been accused of breaching construction rules including building staircases that were too narrow and unsafe. An engineer employed by the factory was also charged over faulty factory construction, Khan added. The industry, where four million workers sew clothes for the world's top retailers for low wages, is the world's second largest after China. The government last month raised minimum wages for workers by 76 percent and launched inspections of factories in the wake of mounting criticism that authorities were failing to improve the sector. The new minimum wage of $68 a month still makes Bangladesh one of the lowest paid garment sectors in the world.

Barack Obama Signs Up For World's First Life-Sized Lego Car, Health Insurance In Symbolic Built By Steve Sammartino And Raul Oaida Gesture To Promote Obamacare
before - some because of pre-existing health conditions like heart disease that insurers were unwilling to cover. But a litany of problems with the government website, healthcare. gov, has played into the hands of Republicans, who say the federal government has no business intervening in the private health care market and should not be dictating health choices to Americans. Mr Obama told reporters last Friday (local time) at a year-end press conference that more than a million American had chosen new insurance plans using the new health care system. The announcement about Mr Obama's symbolic sign-up came on the day a deadline was meant to pass for people signing up for plans beginning January 1. But the government extended the deadline by 24 hours, until late Tuesday, to avoid a crush of users on the website and possible problems, an administration official told AFP. "We have programmed our systems to support January 1 coverage for those who attempt to complete their enrolment through the end of the day tomorrow," the official said. A spokeswoman for the Centres' for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Julie Bataille, said: "We recognise that many have chosen to make their final decisions on today's deadline and we are committed to making sure they can do so." But despite the extension, Ms Bataille urged people to "try to sign up today," saying: "You should not wait until tomorrow." The world's first life-sized, driveable Lego car has hit the streets of Melbourne. Internet entrepreneur and marketing expert Steve Sammartino managed the project with the help of young Romanian student Raul Oaida. In an interview with ABC News 24, Mr Sammartino said Mr Oaida was a technical genius. "He did all of the design work, built the engine, built the car... he is the technical mind behind it. He really is capable of anything," he said. The black and yellow vehicle has been constructed almost entirely from half a million pieces of Lego. "The only things that are non-Lego are the four load-bearing struts and the wheels," Mr Sammartino said. "Other than that, the entire engine is made out of standard Lego pieces, as is the steering wheel and drive the shafts and the steering column. All of the mechanical parts are actually made out of Lego." Mr Sammartino said even the lumbar

US President Barack Obama has symbolically signed up for health insurance to promote his own controversial health care reform legislation. A White House official said Mr Obama, who is on holiday with his family in Hawaii, signed up over the weekend for "a health care plan made available by the Affordable Care Act on the DC marketplace". The gesture was a "symbolic" one, the official said on condition of anonymity, as Mr Obama receives health care from the military and has a White House medical team at his disposal. "He was pleased to participate in a plan as a show of support for these marketplaces, which are providing quality, affordable health care options to more than a million people," the official said. The Affordable Care Act is designed to offer insurance to millions of Americans who have never been able to secure it

supports for the seats have been made out of Lego. "I must point out that those seats are probably the most uncomfortable seats in automotive history," he said. "But in order to stay pure to the project we wanted to make sure that all of the things including the seats and the clunky steering wheel which is also uncomfortable were made out of Lego. "If you're going to do a project, you may as well really go the whole hog." While the car might look flashy, Mr Sammartino said the vehicle was not going to set any land-speed records. "It doesn't go all that far, but just the mere fact that it does go is quite something," he said. "It's really just a technical experiment to show what's possible in a connected world." The astounding vehicle is also ecologically sound. Mr Sammartino says it "runs on a reasonably eco-friendly substance known as [compressed] air."

The Australian owner of one of the world's most exclusive hotels has been given temporary permission to return to his adopted Sri Lankan homeland after being barred in a spat over the national flag. Geoffrey Dobbs, who is also the organiser of an international literary festival in the tourist city of Galle, was initially turned back at Colombo airport for the second time in five days. But an immigration official said that he had been granted a one-month temporary visa, only minutes before he was due to be flown back to Thailand on a Sri Lankan Airlines flight. "He is being given a one-month visa to enter the country," U.G. Udowita, the head of immigration at Colombo airport, said. "This will give him time to sort out his paper work," Udowita added, without elaborating. Mr Dobbs confirmed that he had been told he could enter the country. "I have just been told that I can go (into the country)," Mr Dobbs said in brief comments as he prepared to leave the transit area. Provincial governor Kumari Balasuriya said earlier Tuesday that Dobbs had been blacklisted after flying four flags - which each feature the image of a mythical lion - upside down and near her

home in Galle just before last month's Commonwealth summit in Sri Lanka. "He is a very undesirable person and we have decided to blacklist him and prevent him from entering the country," she said. Ms Balasuriya said that Mr Dobbs had deliberately flown the flags upside down after local workmen had accidentally inverted an Australian flag. The British-born Mr Dobbs runs four luxury hotels in the Galle region where some rooms cost more than $2,000 a night. His portfolio includes the private Taprobane Island, whose guests have included pop stars Sting and Kylie Minogue. It has been named one of the world's 50 most romantic locations by Conde Nast Traveller magazine. The Sri Lankan opposition has said the move to bar Mr Dobbs is part of a strategy by the authorities to seize control of his money-spinning luxury hotels, a charge denied by Ms Balasuriya. A former publisher, Mr Dobbs has organised the Galle Literary Festival since 2007. The event has drawn writers such as the novelist Joanna Trollope, playwright Tom Stoppard and the children's author Michael Morpurgo.

Thousands of Christmas carollers have gathered to sing outside the home of a terminally ill American girl. The singers fulfilled one of 8-yearold Delaney Brown's wishes: a huge holiday sing-along outside her home in West Reading, Pennsylvania. Delaney was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukaemia in May. Supporters have been trying to fulfil a number of her wishes. She also video chatted with singer Taylor Swift on her 8th birthday a few days ago. The mayor of West Reading came out to support the young girl and her family. "With her birthday yesterday and Christmas coming next week, I just can't even fathom what [the family is] going through," he said.

Many people held back tears. "All she wants is carols? We can do that," caroller Meghan McGee said. Another caroller, Melanie Searfoss, just wanted to show her support. "To put her mark on the world as she did in these eight years, especially the last year of her life. I think it's something that should make her family very proud," she said. A social media page was set up to support Delaney and her family. It has attracted more than 45,000 followers. Her family confirmed earlier this week that doctors have given Delaney only days to live. Delaney's parents issued a statement thanking the public for their support and asking for privacy in the difficult days ahead.

Royal protection officers at Buckingham Palace were ticked off and told to keep their sticky fingers out after they were caught helping themselves to bowls of Bombay mix and nuts meant for the Queen, a court heard Thursday. Her Majesty, who was described as having a very savoury tooth, was so angry that her nibbles were disappearing, she began marking the bowls to monitor the situation, a jury at the Old Bailey heard. According to evidence heard in the News of the World phone hacking trial, Bombay mix, cashew nuts and almonds, were often placed in bowls around the Royal apartments so the Queen could enjoy a nibble as she moved around. But in 2005 it was claimed that palace officials were forced to intervene after the Queen complained that the bowls were constantly empty. A memo was

apparently sent to all police officers guarding the palace, warning them to stop eating the snacks as it was upsetting the Queen. The claims were made by Clive Goodman, the News of the Worlds former Royal editor, in an email to the papers then editor, Andy Coulson, in 2005. Queen furious about police stealing bowls of nuts and nibbles left out for her in apartments. She started marking the bowls to see when the levels dipped, Goodmans email read. Andrew Edis QC, prosecuting, explained how Goodman had suggested that the Queen had been upset by the disappearance of her favourite snacks. He said: They were all being scoffed by police. That irritated Her Majesty, apparently. When laughter erupted among the

Hurricane-force winds and torrential rain have wreaked havoc in Britain and France, killing six people, disrupting holiday travel and cutting power to thousands of homes. Winds of up to 145 kilometres per hour have hit both sides of the Channel with heavy downpours causing flooding, traffic jams, and the cancellations of rail, flight and ferry services. In Britain the number of people killed in the two days of storms rose to at least five after a man died trying to rescue his dog from fast-flowing waters in Devon, south-west England. A teenager died in France on Monday after a wall collapsed on him. Airports in southern England were disrupted, with some flights from Britain's busiest airport, Heathrow, cancelled or delayed. A power failure at London's Gatwick Airport added to the misery, while storm damage temporarily cut all trains to the airport. Passengers on a train heading to Plymouth in Devon spent the night stranded in the town of Taunton,

British train operators cancelled hundreds of services on Tuesday morning, by which time the storm had abated, leaving hundreds of thousands of people scrambling to get onto later services in and out of London. Brittany and Normandy were among the regions worst hit in France, where 240,000 homes lost electricity, while in southern England, 150,000 homes were cut off from the power grid, according to the Energy Networks Association. Prime minister David Cameron has tweeted that he is being briefed on the operation to restore power to tens of thousands of households in time for Christmas celebrations. He says his thoughts are with those affected and with those whose travel plans have been disrupted by the storms. Britain's environment agency says flooding is expected to affect much of the country, while some towns in France's Brittany region also face severe flooding.

Great Ideas For Indoor Workouts

The weather may be rainy, gloomy, dull and its always humid, since the rains have become so unpredictable. This has affected so many of our outdoor activities like shopping, exercising or even going to the gym. Rains have disturbed our regular exercise routines on many occasions, but don't let this season deter you from a great workout even if it means you have to do it at home. Skipping rope been found that sweeping and mopping the floors provides as much exercise as 10 minutes on the treadmill. Even tidying up your room, making the beds, cleaning the ceiling fan are activities that burn calories and tone your arms and shoulders.

It is a good idea to invest in a skipping rope. If you are used to going out for an early morning walk or jog, a sudden shower can delay or derail your plan. But stick to your daily cardio kick: warm up with a few stretching exercises, followed by jogging on the spot. Once you're done stretching your legs and arms, skip for 15 minutes. This provides the same or more of the benefits of a jog, and it will tone your leg and arm muscles. Get a pair of dumbbells, as they help burn fat when used in various exercises. Do curls, squats, lunges, rows and kickbacks using dumbbells for an effective workout.

Exercise balls are another useful tool for home exercise programmes. They may be used for balance and proprioceptive training, core strengthening, and as a bench to perform your bench press on. They come in different sizes and will often include an entire workout programme for you to follow, so choose one based on your requirements. Enroll in a kickboxing class. Kickboxing is a fast and energetic workout which burns several calories per hour, faster than burning calories on an exercycle or a cross-trainer. Yoga is the most recommended indoor exercise. Practice simple asanas to keep you fit. Yoga also helps reduce respiratory problems that are very common during the monsoon season. Encourage your children and family to practice pranayam daily, as it increases concentration and reduces stress levels. Besides, yoga is very beneficial for pregnant women and heart patients. Suryanamaskar should be practised atleast five times daily, early in the morning.

Skip the lift and take the stairs. This is a very effective for fat burn. On the days that you can't go out and exercise, walk up and down the stairs at a constant speed for a good workout.

Dancing is the best workout for everybody. Just turn up the volume and dance like no ones watching. This makes the body flexible and is the most enjoyable workout.

Also try push-ups, sit-ups, chin-ups, pull-ups and chair dips. These will tone your arms, shoulders and ab muscles. If you are not a gym person, sit-ups, waist bends, knee bends, and calf exercises are a great way to flex your muscles. Pick a spot in your home that lets you hold on to a support and also provides ample space to spread yourself.

Dont be a couch potato; ditch the television and opt for cleaning. It has If youve been thinking of investing in a treadmill this maybe the best time to buy it, as it will last you a long time and you don't need to go out for your walk or run.

B.C. Girl With Leukemia Seeks Christmas Stem Cell Donor

Matching donor sought to help girl survive

The family of a four-year-old Victoria girl, who is fighting leukemia after already beating cancer once, is pleading for stem cell donors around the world to come forward this Christmas. Hannah Day was diagnosed around age three with a malignant tumour in her stomach, but by September, after intensive treatment, she was in remission. Now cancer-free, Hannah was supposed to go to Disneyland on a trip organized by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, but just over a month ago she was diagnosed with leukemia, possibly caused by her previous treatment. Last Saturday, Hannah suffered a seizure and was rushed to hospital in Victoria, then flown to Children's Hospital in Vancouver. Her mother Brooke Ervin was petrified as she called 911. "It was the scariest 911 phone call I've ever made in my life she stopped breathing in my arms," said Ervin. Hannah is now out of intensive care. Although she is still unable to walk and needs help sitting up, she is breathing on her own and has an appetite. It's a small victory for a little girl who has spent much of her life in hospital, fed through a tube, enduring endless tests and chemotherapy, as doctors help her little body try to beat back cancer. But it is not enough what Hannah needs is a stem cell transplant. Hannah's family had hoped her twoyear-old sister Hailey, who is the closest potential donor, could save her life, but sadly, she is not a match. Now, they're asking people around the world to register with the OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network, which is run by Canadian Blood Services to secure donors for transplant patients. The odds of finding a match are one in a million, but her family hope their Christmas prayers for a donor will come true. Meanwhile, Hannah is preparing to spend another Christmas in hospital. "She asked if Santa is going to remember where she is. And that was really sad, because she felt that Santa might not know where she is to deliver her gifts. You know, because she still believes," said Ervin. "I told her of course he knows where she is, and that she was a good girl and she deserves everything that she wants this year from Christmas."

APD Looking For Suspect After Woman Groped

Adrian Dix says the race to replace him as New Democratic Party Leader will heat up in January and most of the candidates are likely to come from the current party caucus. Mr. Dix, in a year-end interview with The Canadian Press, says hes not naming names and wont back a candidate, but he expects currently elected provincial New Democrats to dominate the field. I think theres going to be great candidates from the current caucus, said Mr. Dix. This is the strongest NDP caucus weve had in a long time. There are a significant number of caucus members who are in a position, I think, to run and win the leadership. But, so far, no current member of the NDP caucus has officially declared their candidacy. Only current NDP House Leader John Horgan, a former leadership candidate, has said he wont run. Current NDP finance critic Mike Farnworth, who was runner-up to Mr. Dix in April, 2011, has said hes interested in running for leader, but has not made an official announcement. Former union leader George Heyman and legal advocate David Eby are also expected to run. Other New Democrats said to be considering their candidacy are Rob Fleming and Judy Darcy. I think they have a significant advantage, caucus members, Mr. Dix said. Theyre elected and they know the job and they know the position. But I expect to see other candidates as well. Mr. Dix said the potential candidacy of federal party members has generated publicity. But he said that he believes the coming 2015 federal election will keep most MPs committed to federal politics. So far, B.C. NDP MPs Nathan Cullen, Peter Julian and Fin Donnelly have said thanks, but no thanks, to the job opening. When I read those stories, it was my strong guess they wouldnt be candidates, ultimately, and they werent, Mr. Dix said. Lower Mainland NDP MPs Kennedy Stewart and Jinny Sims are said to be still considering entering the race. Mr. Dix said he doesnt consider it odd that nobody has officially entered the race, even though he announced hed step down more than four months ago. Mr. Dix said when opposition NDP leader Dave Barrett lost to Social Credit leader Bill Bennett back in 1983, it took more than a year to replace him

with Bob Skelly. And when Mr. Skelly lost the 1986 election, it took the NDP more than a year to replace him with Mike Harcourt, said Mr. Dix. He said the timing of the leadership contest, set last month for September, 2014, is also a major reason candidates have not officially entered the race. Its very hard to be a candidate for the leadership for that length of time, and thats one of the reasons why you havent seen announcements so far, Mr. Dix said. But the race will get going, and its going to be a good race. Mr. Dix said he plans to stay in politics as the MLA for Vancouver-Kingsway, working under the new NDP leader. I think you can drive change from the Opposition side, he said. Its not as easy. Its not what you would prefer. I was disappointed on May 14, but I got up on May 15, all the same, and started doing my job. Thats what Im going to do. Mr. Dix can be forgiven if he wants to get past 2013 and move on with 2014. One moment, the election victory speech was being rehearsed; the next, a shaken Mr. Dix was on stage delivering a concession speech about an election loss that has most New Democrats in British Columbia still wondering what happened. Mr. Dix entered last Aprils election campaign with what was believed to be a solid 20-point lead, but that disappeared on election night, leaving him alone on a Vancouver stage to congratulate Premier Christy Clark and her Liberals for their fourth consecutive mandate. Mr. Dix also recently lost his father, Ken. Last September, he announced he would give up the NDP leadership as soon as the party picked a new leader. At last months NDP convention, he told delegates significant communication mistakes during the election campaign helped to inspire the Liberal campaign. Mr. Dix said one mistake was his decision to choose Earth Day last April, near the mid-point of the campaign, to outline the NDPs opposition to the proposed Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion and the plan to increase oil tanker traffic in the port of Vancouver. Many considered the Kinder Morgan announcement the turning point of the campaign because it alienated traditional NDP voters. Mr. Dix called it a mistake and said he acted too quickly.

Five Killed By Carbon Monoxide As 220,000 Face Freezing Eastern Canada Winter Without Power
Toronto ice storm: 90,000 still without power
Police in Quebec say carbon monoxide poisoning is believed to be the cause of three deaths in a chalet on the provinces North Shore. Authorities found two men and a woman on Monday afternoon after being alerted by a worried neighbour. Their names have not been released. A heating system was found in the chalet and provincial police spokesman Richard Gagne says it is highly possible that a gas leak led to the deaths. Toronto Mayor Rob Ford says there were about six times as many calls about carbon monoxide Monday as the city gets in a usual day 110 calls compared to about 20. Ford says the city is making progress bringing power back to residents. As of mid-day Tuesday, 90,000 customers were left awaiting hydro, down from 300,000 people at the height of the outages that began on the weekend. Toronto Hydro says 70% of those who experienced an outage have seen power restored He says additional help has arrived from Ottawa and Windsor and about 50 crews worked overnight to bring residents back on line, adding they are aiming to restore all power by Thursday or Friday. But the mayor says the last 50,000 customers will be hardest because they are one-offs meaning one house left on a street. Police say a gas-powered generator was running in the garage to supply electricity to heat the house, and although there was no access to the house from the garage, the dangerous fumes still got inside the home. Capt. David Eckerman said someone else called after burning furniture in a fireplace and another call was for a gas-powered generator that was in a garage seeping carbon monoxide into a home. Police say running a gas generator, barbecue or a similar device too close to a residence can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Deputy Fire Chief Mike McCoy says people should not use any appliance in the home that burns, whether its a barbecue, gas appliance or even candles if people are using a lot of them. If the home stays closed and theres no way to bring in fresh air, oxygen, youre going to run into a CO issue, he warned Tuesday. The ice storm left hundreds of thousands without power in Ontario and Quebec before battering Atlantic Canada on Monday.

Officials are warning residents of storm-hit cities and towns to use caution when trying to keep warm as five people have been reported dead due to carbon monoxide poisoning in Ontario and Quebec. In Toronto alone Monday night, 11 people were taken to hospital with signs of carbon monoxide poisoning

and two people died in the town of Newcastle, east of Toronto, after trying to keep warm with a gas generator in the garage. A 52-year-old man and his 72-yearold mother were rushed to Lakeridge Health Bowmanville but did not survive. Their names have not been released.

Healthiest New Year's Resolutions

New Years resolutions are a bit like babies: Theyre fun to make but extremely difficult to maintain. Each January, roughly one in three Canadians resolve to better themselves in some way. A much smaller percentage of people actually make good on those resolutions. While about 75% of people stick to their goals for at least a week, less than half (46%) are still on target six months later, a study found. It's hard to keep up the enthusiasm months after you've swept up the confetti, but it's not impossible. This year, pick one of the following worthy resolutions, and stick with it. Heres to your health! Lose weight The fact that this is perennially among the most popular resolutions suggests just how difficult it is to commit to. But you can succeed if you dont expect overnight success. Use a food journal to keep track of what you eat and have a support system in place. Around week four to six...people become excuse mills. Thats why its important to have someone there on a regular basis to get you through those rough times. Stay in touch Feel like old friends (or family) have fallen by the wayside? Its good for your health to reconnect with them. Research suggests people with strong social ties live longer than those who dont. In fact, a lack of social bonds can damage your health as much as alcohol abuse and smoking, and even more than obesity and lack of exercise. In a technology-fixated era, its never been easier to stay in touchor rejuvenate your relationshipwith friends and family, so fire up Facebook and follow up with in-person visits. Quit smoking

New Year, healthier you

A study found that middle-age adults who had gone back to school (including night school) sometime in the previous quarter century had stronger memories and verbal skills than those who did not. Whats more, several studies have linked higher educational attainment to a decreased risk of Alzheimers disease. You are gaining a sense of accomplishment by gaining new knowledge, and you are out there meeting people and creating possibilities that were never there before. Cut back on alcohol While much has been written about the health benefits of a small amount of alcohol, too much tippling is still the bigger problem. (In fact, binge drinking seems to be on the rise.) Drinking alcohol in excess affects the brains neurotransmitters and can increase the risk of depression, memory loss, or even seizures. Chronic heavy drinking boosts your risk of liver and heart disease, hypertension, stroke, and mental deterioration, and even cancers of the mouth, throat, liver, and breast. l Get more sleep

Save money

contribute to stress. Stress is an inevitable part of life. Relaxation, sleep, socializing, and taking vacations are all things we tell ourselves we deserve but dont allow ourselves to have.

Fear that youve failed too many times to try again? Talk to any ex-smoker, and youll see that multiple attempts are often the path to success. Try different methods to find out what works. And think of the cash youll save! (We know you know the ginormous health benefit.) Its one of the harder habits to quit. Think of how much money you will save.

Save money by making healthy lifestyle changes. Walk or ride your bike to work, or explore carpooling. (That means more money in your pocket and less air pollution.) Cut back on gym membership costs by exercising at home. Many fitness programs on videogame systems like Nintendos Wii Wii Fit Plus and Microsofts Xbox Kinect Your Shape Fitness Evolved can get you sweating. Take stock of what you have in the fridge and make a grocery list. Aimless supermarket shopping can lead to poor choices for your diet and wallet. Cut your stress A little pressure now and again wont kill us; in fact, short bouts of stress give us an energy boost. But if stress is chronic, it can increase your risk ofor worseninsomnia, depression, obesity, heart disease, and more. Long work hours, little sleep, no exercise, poor diet, and not spending time with family and friends can

Volunteer We tend to think our own bliss relies on bettering ourselves, but our happiness also increases when we help others. And guess what? Happiness is good for your health. A study found that people with positive emotions were about 20% less likely than their gloomier peers to have a heart attack or develop heart disease. Other research suggests that positive emotions can make people more resilient and resourceful. Someone who makes this sort of resolution is likely to obtain a tremendous personal benefit in the happiness department. Go back to school No matter how old you are, heading back to the classroom can help revamp your career, introduce you to new friends, and even boost your brainpower.

You probably already know that a good nights rest can do wonders for your moodand appearance. But sleep is more beneficial to your health than you might realize. A lack of sleep has been linked to a greater risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. And sleep is crucial for strengthening memories (a process called consolidation). So take a napand dont feel guilty about it. Travel The joys and rewards of vacations can last long after the suitcase is put away. We can often get stuck in a rut, and we cant get out of our own way. Everything becomes familiar and too routine. But traveling allows us to tap into life as an adventure, and we can make changes in our lives without having to do anything too bold or dramatic. It makes you feel rejuvenated and replenished. It gets you out of your typical scenery, and the effects are revitalizing. Its another form of new discovery and learning, and great for the body and the soul.

Great Ways to Bond with Your Child Through Play

Coloring

while the child waits for ages under the table. Show him that this time is as important for you as it is for him and the level of your involvement will speak more than your words

Play is the work of the child. Children learn about the world around them through play. It is very important to keep them healthy, physically and emotionally. For children love is spelt as time. So the greatest gift you can give your child is the gift of your time and undivided attention, and what better way to spend time with your child than by playing with him. Here are a few ways in which you can make this time a pleasurable activity for both you and your child. 1. Bring out your inner child

4. Arm yourself with an extra dose of patience Be patient with your child when you play. Give her time, dont rush her, and never pressurise her. Let your play time be a time for relaxation and fun in a zero pressure environment. Turn it into a time that your child looks forward to every day. 5. Think out of the box

Shed your parent hat before you begin to play. Let your child decide how he wants to spend the play time. So if he wants to play pirates than pirates it shall be, and not junior scrabble that you want him to play. Once your child is convinced about your willingness to go along with his ideas, he will be more enthusiastic to give educative games a try. 2. Weave play time into your daily routine

A family game night with favorite age appropriate games which your child enjoys. This is a great way for the entire family to bond with each other. So even if it something as simple as a blind mans bluff ensures that you do it as a family. Try some of these games which do not require toys. - Dressing up with old clothes and role playing (you be the child and she mommy) - Washing the car washing less playing with water and soap suds more - Cooking together - Going for a walk, just the two of you - Dancing together to his favorite song - Pillow fights - Playing in the sand pit or making mud pies, the idea is to get as dirty as possible 6. Try it with your older child too

Set a time to play. It need not be very long, even 20 minutes would do. . Knowing that mamma has set aside exclusive time just to play with him; will stop him from bothering you throughout the day. Just ensure that you keep up your play date with him. 3. Give your undivided attention There is nothing more frustrating for a child than to have a parent pretending to play. For instance, if you are playing hide and seek you do not get to pretend to search endlessly while typing furiously on your blackberry

Play time need not be limited only to toddlers and kids. You can get your teenager also to play with you. Just be innovative. The idea is to choose a topic that interests them. So you could ask your teen to help you download your favorite apps or search for favorite videos on you tube.

Top Health Benefits Of Walking

Researchers have shown that corn oil significantly lowers cholesterol with more favorable changes in total cholesterol (TC) and LDL-C than extra virgin olive oil. The scientists were led by lead researcher, Dr. Kevin C Maki, PhD, of Biofortis, the clinical research arm of Merieux NutriSciences. Among the 54 healthy men and women in the feeding study, consumption of foods made with corn oil resulted in significantly lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and total cholesterol than the same foods made with extra virgin olive oil. Corn oil lowered LDL cholesterol by 10.9 percent compared to extra virgin olive oil's 3.5 percent reduction1,2, and total cholesterol decreased by 8.2 percent with corn oil compared to 1.8 percent for extra virgin olive oil.

Corn Oil Better At Cutting Cholesterol Than Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Study participants received four tablespoons of corn oil or extra virgin olive oil in the foods provided every day, consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommendations. All foods were provided to the study participants as part of a weight maintenance diet. The randomized, double-blind, controlled crossover clinical trial assessed the effects of dietary oils on fasting lipoprotein lipids. The study compared the effects of corn and extra virgin olive oil on LDL cholesterol (primary outcome variable), total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol), Non-HDL cholesterol, Triglycerides and the total to HDL cholesterol ratio. Study participants had fasting LDL cholesterol =130 mg/dL and less than 200 mg/dL.

A new study from the University of Adelaide's Robinson Institute has suggested that women, who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, should avoid consuming red meat and opt for fish and poultry. The recommendation comes at a time when there is increasing evidence to suggest that red meat is linked with a higher rate of gestational diabetes in pregnant women, which poses risks to the health of both the mother and the baby. Research leader and author Philippa Middleton said that the latest international research shows that women who eat a lot of red and processed meats even before they become pregnant have a significant risk of developing gestational diabetes.

Red Meat Linked To Diabetes In Pregnant Women

Read the Fiji Times Canada online www.fijitimescanada.com

However, the latest US research has shown that eating fish and poultry does not increase the risk of gestational diabetes, and consuming more vegetable and non-meat protein is associated with a reduction in risk, Middleton asserted. For example, just over half a serving of nuts per day can reduce the risk of gestational diabetes by 40 percent, Middleton said. Middleton said that although the link between red meat and diabetes is strengthening, more research is needed to better understand why this is happening and how to adapt women's diets and other lifestyle behaviors to prevent both gestational and type 2 diabetes.

2014 Honda Civic

The 2014 Honda Civic is back on track. That initial assurance is necessary because the Civic took a rare stumble in the 2012 model year. A redesign cheapened its interior, left it looking less cohesive than ever, and watered down the appeal of its typically perky powertrains and front-drive handling. At the same time, the competition grew more sophisticated and feature-rich. In one of the quickest turnarounds ever seen from Honda, Civic sedans were refreshed with new faces, new interior finishes, and retuned suspensions, all to shore up its reputation as one of the leaders of the compact-car class. The Civic was substantially refreshed, and quickly; the changes forced us to reset our take on the look and feel of the vehicle last year, and it's that vehicle that returns for 2014, though Honda promises there's even more to come this fall for the classy-again Civic. New light gets shed on the Civic's Accord-influenced exterior: the front end clearly mimics the Accords face, from the new "open-mouth" lower bumper to the black honeycomb mesh grille. The Civic also dons integrated fog lamps for the upper trims and new clear-lens cornering lamps (plus a chrome finishing bar in back and new Accord-like rear bumper design). In all, it looks more sophisticated from the outside. Inside, Honda hasnt completely redesigned the funky contours of the instrument panel, but its redone pretty much all of the materials and surfaces, subbing in requisite soft-touch dash materials. With this revamped Civic, Honda has made major gains in refinement that translate to a far more pleasant cabin experience. Compared to the pareddown 2012 model, the current Civic's body has been stiffened with more high-strength steel, side pillars have been upgraded, and thicker windshield and front door glass have been applied. There's also more soundproofing for the dash, floor, doors, and rear tray. The difference is that you barely hear the engine when it's idling, road noise has been cut way down, and the softer dash materials make even the acoustics inside feel a bit softer. Interior appointments essentially carry over--with decent front seats but backseat accommodations that could be better contoured and could really use better head and shoulder room. Performance is one area where the 2013 Civic is mostly unchanged-although some modest suspension changes (firmer springs, stiffer antiroll bar, quieter bushings, and quicker steering ratio) go a long way toward making this staid compact sedan feel a little perkier again. Much of the lineup continues with the 140-horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, paired with either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. Si models get a more muscly 201hp, 2.4-liter four, and Civic Hybrid models will be back with their IMA mild-hybrid system that provides EPA ratings of 44 mpg, city and highway. Steering is probably still the biggest letdown; it's overly light and too quick. But the Civic's mild retuning gives it better composure. Ride quality feels a bit more settled than in the 2012 car. Front brake rotors also get an upgrade in size, although we've noted that brake feel is a little mushy. The most recent Civic has received some structural upgrades, and based on crash tests, its occupant protection is better than ever. It's achieved top 'good' ratings in the new small overlap frontal test, and it's now an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. Safety-feature content has been bolstered, too, with the introduction of a new SmartVent airbag designlike whats been introduced in the 2013 Accordand the Civic Hybrid will get standard Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) systems. Features are the other area where the Civic was most changed for 2013; those upgrades carry over this year. Honda has in the past saved some of its best, most useful features only for its top models, but all Civics get Bluetooth hands-free calling connectivity and audio streaming, text-message functionality, Pandora integration, and a rearview camera system. In addition, navigation systems have been upgraded with more points of interest and a new FM-based (subscription-free) traffic service). Whichever trim level you go with, we'd advise you go without the nav system, as the base audio system's interface is better and more intuitive.

Clear all windows of frost and fog. If visibility becomes poor, find a place to safely pull off the road as soon as you can. It's best to stop at a rest area or exit the roadway and take shelter in a building. If you can't exit, pull off the road as far as you can. Get out from the passenger side, to reduce the risk of being hit by other drivers. If visibility is poor, put on your emergency flashers. 7. Give yourself extra travel time in bad weather The safest strategy is to avoid driving in bad weather conditions. Give yourself extra time for travel and, if weather is bad, wait for conditions to improve. Always tell someone where you are going, the route you plan to take and when you expect to arrive. If you don't arrive on time, and people are worried about your safety, they will know where to search for you. a slippery spot. When the tires make contact with firm road again, the car can skid or lose control. On most cars, the cruise control is disengaged by tapping on the brake. In an emergency, this adds a fraction of a second to your response time as well as the risk of the braking action itself causing a loss of control on a slippery road. 9. Travel with a fully charged cell phone Be prepared to make a call. Take a fully charged cell phone with you. These are very useful in an emergency or if you need help. *911 is often a free call. But don't talk and drive. Let someone with you make the call, or pull over to a safe spot to place a call. If you do a lot of winter driving in areas with poor reception, think about getting a citizen's band (CB) radio. 10. Slow down and wear your seatbelt A good way to avoid skidding is to drive appropriately for road and weather conditions: slow down. Allow extra travel time and be very careful when you brake, change lanes, make turns and take curves. Even careful and experienced drivers can skid, so be prepared. Skidding may be the result of panic braking when you are trying to avoid an obstacle on the road. When worn correctly, seat belts save lives. Lap belts should be kept low and snug over the hips, while shoulder belts should always be worn across the chest. Learn more about seat belt safety. Children aged 12 and under should ride in the back seat, safely seated in a car seat or booster seat made for their size and age.

Often referred to as medicare, the system is designed to make sure that all residents of Canada have reasonable access to health care from doctors and hospitals. Dilip Kumar: Film Starring Bollywood Actor To Be Released

The Jumping Jack of Bollywood shares his feelings about his children not getting married and how they are so engrossed in their work

Jeetendra Shares His Worries About His Children Not Getting Married

A Bollywood film starring veteran actor Dilip Kumar in the lead is set for a theatrical release for the first time, 23 years after it was made. VS Rajender Babu, director of Aag Ka Dariya (River of Fire), told the media the film did not get released initially because of a financial dispute. In the intervening years, the original print of the film was badly damaged. But Mr Rajendra Babu said he recently found a "perfect print" of the film with a distributor in Singapore. "I was surprised when I saw the negative of the print, it was kept so carefully. The print has been sent to the lab for colour correction and postproduction work," he said. "I believe this will be his [Dilip Kumar's] last film and he will be happy to see it," he added. The veteran actor is 90 and has been in

poor health for some time now. Dubbed "The Tragedy King" for his roles in many Bollywood classics in the 1950s and 60s, he is one of India's best-loved actors. Described by critics as the ultimate method actor in India, he has won more awards than any other Bollywood star. Over his long career, he has won eight Filmfare awards, India's version of the Oscars. In Aag Ka Dariya, Kumar plays an Indian air force officer and the story revolves around corruption in the defence forces. Well-known actress Rekha plays the leading lady in the film. Mr Rajendra Babu, who has directed several award-winning Kannada and Hindi films, said the film had been cleared by the Censor Board and would be released some time in the new year.

After acting with popular actors like Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and superstar Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone now wants to work with other superstars - Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan. "Every year I am asked this question (which Bollywood actor I would like to work with now), but I hope in the next one or two years I will get to work with Hrithik, Salman and Aamir," Deepika, who has given four back-to-back hits this year, told reporters here at her success party. "Till now I have not worked with these actors (Aamir, Salman and Hrithik)," she added. There are reports that Deepika has been roped in opposite Salman in Sooraj Barjatya's next, but Deepika denied and said: "That's not true and I have not officially met Sooraj ji." It's not just Deepika who is eager to work with Salman. In fact, the "Bigg

Deepika Keen To Work With Salman And Aamir

Boss" host has also expressed his desire to work with the actress and has been seen praising her on many occasions. Deepika said it feels great. "Definitely it feels great when Salman says such good things about me because if you all know he was the one who first noticed me," said Deepika, who made her Bollywood debut opposite Shah Rukh in 2007 film "Om Shanti Om". "I was doing an ad with his friends in Rajasthan. So, he noticed me first of all and he was the one who offered me my first film," she recalled. Deepika, during her modelling days, had got an acting offer from Salman before she was chosen for Shah Rukhstarrer "Om Shanti Om". However, the actress denied Salman's offer as she felt she was not ready to face the camera. Currently, Deepika has films like "Happy New Year", "Finding Fanny Fernandes" and Imtiaz Ali's untitled film in her kitty.

Deepak Tijori Walked Out Of Film He Was Directing

Actor-turned-filmmaker Deepak Tijori has walked out of the film Dare You which he was directing. He apparently had severe creative differences with producers Denis Selarka and Mehul Simari and left the project unannounced. The producers have now roped in another director while Deepak has got back to acting and features in Devang Dholakia's Tina & Lolo.

The superstar will be seen portraying himself in an upcoming film, where he helps a struggling writer fight for his rights

Will Amitabh Bachchan Help A Struggling Scriptwriter?

Ever since the duo made their separation public, there have been numerous speculations and reports. Heres what Sussanne has to say about their split Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne, who were married for 13 years recently ended their 17 year-long relationship. Hrithik publicly stated that Sussanne has decided to separate from him and its a really trying time for his family. Post the Krrish 3 stars statement, a lot of Sussannes friends were reportedly upset with him. Was Sussanne upset too? Well, she says, No, I dont feel bad about what Hrithik said because I will always respect, love and care for him for the rest of my life. So, I will never feel bad for anything he says or does. She was also asked how difficult is she finding it to deal with the situation. To this, she says, I am fortunate to not feel any pressure because I am surrounded by good people my family, my inlaws they are all good people. So, I dont think anything is bad. Sometimes, people move on, but that doesnt make anybody bad. My in-laws are family for me, they always will be. However, sometimes in life, two good people have to part. One should move on and enjoy other things in life. On being asked if theres any chance that Hrithik and she would reconcile, she says, Reconciliation? I dont know. MaybeI really dont know She also denied reports about Arjun Rampals involvement with her split. She said, You cant blame anyone for this. Its sad to blame anyone. We are close-knit friends and its not right to blame anyone. Well, wed like to wish Sussanne all the good luck for her new ventures and hope that New Year brings a lot of happiness to Sussanne and her family.

Deepika, Kapil Honoured With Indian Of The Year Awards

Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone and comedian Kapil Sharma have received Indian of the Year 2013 awards for their contribution to the entertainment industry. In an awards ceremony, CNN-IBN honoured 11 extraordinary Indians across Politics, Sports, Entertainment, Business and Public Service categories. Deepika received the special achievement award from her father and former badminton star Prakash Padukone. She was honoured for constantly reinventing herself as a leading lady with exceptional acting abilities and for delivering a slew of mega hits in 2013, including "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani", "Chennai Express" and "Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela". "I have always done what seemed right to me and my parents supported me all throughout. I never sit and analyse before signing a film if it will be a hit or not, rather just go by my heart. If I like the script, nothing else matters to me. I feel so proud to have received it (Indian of the Year award) from my father," Deepika said in a statement. The producer and host of "Comedy Nights With Kapil" felt honoured to be awarded amidst eminent personalities. He won CNN-IBN Indian of the Year 2013 - Entertainment. "It's the year of the common man and I am also one of them. To be awarded amidst such eminent personalities and dignitaries it's a great achievement in itself. I have always believed in working and entertaining the common man and that I think is the success mantra of my life," said Kapil. He was awarded for creating a successful stand-up comedy show that has universal appeal.

Amitabh Bachchan will be seen portraying himself once again onscreen. The last time he portrayed himself was in Anurag Kashyaps segment of Bombay Talkies, where the story revolved beautifully around a fathers dream to have a bite of the same murabba which Amitabh Bachchan has had. In Ghumketu, he comes to the rescue of a struggling scriptwriter. The story is a satirical take on a writers struggle to make a mark in the industry. The film, which is being directed by ad filmmaker Pushpendra Misra, has extended cameos by Anurag Kashyap

and Senior Bachchan. Portrayed by Nawazuddin Siddhiqui, the struggling film writers script is plagiarized and made into a film, by another filmmaker. Thats when he knocks on Bachchans doors for help, who in turn shows his humane nature and comes to his aid. The film is scheduled to release next year. Although its a completely different ballgame portraying one self, Amitabh Bachchan has always played all his characters with full aplomb. We are sure that he will do justice to his extended cameo, just as he does with all other roles. Haina, BollywoodLifers?

How To Make Rose Water At Home

Relationships

Things That Turn Men Off

Five things that surprisingly could be a turn off for men. Second-guessing your thoughts, your instincts Some women avoid communicating and expressing their feelings and thoughts. They expect men to read their minds and guess their thoughts, which is not always possible. And when they fail they receive the cold shoulder for not playing the guessing game right. Nothing is more annoying for men then a woman who will just not say what she wants but expect you to read the 'signs'. Another thing that really gets to men is some women assuming that men know what they want them to do. Saying one thing and doing just the opposite just confuses things even more for men. So, play it straight and just speak up, it leaves no room for miscommunication or misunderstandings Playing the I am the superior card Some women equate men with being dumb, everyone makes mistakes but there is no need to constantly rub it in. It only makes you a nag and can be annoying. Smothering you with too much attention Always remember that your guy has a mother and there is no need for you to step into her shoes. While it's okay to comfort and be there for him, don't treat him like a child and smother to such an extent that it starts bugging him. Sharing too much information Men are not always comfortable talking about their problems, unlike some women who would go overboard sharing every minute detail with everyone in sight. Learn to exercise caution, and don't over share. Learn to keep things to yourself at times, especially something thats shared with you in private. It will build trust and also encourage the guy to open up more. Also, if you have just got to know the guy, there is no need to share every little detail with him. Learn to keep some things to yourself and share only what is necessary. Planning future way ahead of time Learn to live in the moment, and while planning what to do on your birthday is okay, planning what you will do in your 50th anniversary while you are still dating will only freak the guy out. Learn to take small steps and enjoy the moment rather that fast forward with an over active imagination, leaving your partner confused and spooked.

Not sure how good the rose water bought off the shelves actually is? Here's an easy DIY recipe to make rose water at home. All you need is rose petals and distilled water. Instructions: 1. The petals must be freshly picked. Pesticides or chemicals should not be used while growing them, which is why it makes sense to use roses that you have grown yourself. 2. Pick flowers two to three hours after sunrise when the morning dew has evaporated. 3. Use only petals, not the stem and leaves. 4. Wash thoroughly to remove bugs

and dirt particles. 5. Place the rose petals in a large pot of distilled water. 6. Add just enough water to cover the petals. Too much water will give you very diluted rose water. 7. Cover the pot with a lid and simmer on a low flame. The water should be steaming hot not boiling hot. 8. Allow the water to steam until the petals have lost their colour and the water has taken on the colour of the rose petals. You will see the rose oil floating on the surface. 9. Strain the water and collect in a container. Store it in a refrigerator. It will last longer this way.

Design Engineering Lautoka Football team proved critics wrong and buried the "no trophy" jinx for 2013 when they defeated the highly fancied Nadi outfit 1-0 at Churchill Park this afternoon. Lautoka raised aloft the late Jimmy Ram Pratap Memorial trophy after the two match series, having drawn the first match 1-1 at a soggy under foot of Prince Charles Park on Wednesday night. Leisari Qalica was the hero for the Lautoka team as he tapped-in the winner in the 33rd minute of the second half. The Blues scored on the counter attack after a poorly taken free kick by Nadi as Qalica was neatly set up by Ilaitia Tuilau and Noa Vukica. Midfield general Alvin Avinesh, Ilatia Tuilau, Jone Kaloutani and goalkeeper Alifereti Baleiloa stood out for Lautoka while Munit Krishna, Ilimotama Jese and goalkeeper Ben Aminio played well for Nadi. An elated Lautoka Football Association President Shalend Prasad thanked his coaches, Ravinesh Kumar and Bakalevu Mocemereke, and his hardworking players for the win. Interim coach Bakalevu Mocemereke said they picked up a notch in training after the Wednesday nights draw. We had faith in our players and made a change in the starting eleven where by Praneel Naidu replaced Seremaia Naditisu at left back. Nadi had several changes in their lineup, returnees goalkeeper BenAmino Mateinaqara, Ame Votunui and Eliki Ravusai got the first eleven starts and in a rather surprising move - Amani Makoi played at strike force relegating Rusiate Matirerega on the bench. Nadi President Navneeda Goundar was gracious in defeat said Lautoka was the

better team on the day and gave Nadi a good build up ahead of the CVC and Oceania Champions League. I ask fans to keep faith in the team. We will be a changed side come January, he said. Ben Aminio and Ilimotama Jese of Nadi, Mitieli Namuka and Jone Kaloutani of Lautoka were cautioned in the match. the hottest thing going in the WWE. And now with the impending return of Batista, it makes little sense to place Cena in the Royal Rumble match to begin with. The company would not bring back a proven, albeit 44-yearold, former world champion only to have him quickly eliminated from the match. It stands to reason that Batista will enter, and ultimately win, the match, setting up a blockbuster match at WrestleMania with Randy Orton. While Cena remains a popular superstar, for some reason the company continues to make him the focus of every villain that debuts in the company. He has now bested every legitimate threat in the company, and he will continue to do so until he is either unable to compete any longer or he simply walks away. For some reason, the company thinks that watching Cena repeatedly defeat heels he has already beaten countless times is still entertaining to the WWE Universe. His lengthy feud with Alberto Del Rio became tired after one match and proved that both are far weaker in-ring technicians than they are made out to be. The Shield looked to be a dominant and unstoppable entity when they debuted in November 2012. And they did have an impressive run of being completely unstoppable. But the entire time, audiences simply watched and waited until they finally stepped over the line and made the mistake of attacking Cena. Once they did, the group has never been the same. While Cena never beat the trio on a grand stage, just the experience of facing him seemed to shatter the allure of the group. Yes, it was incredibly impressive to see Cena return several months early from triceps surgery. Few thought he would be able to work at the level that he once had, at least when he initially made his return. However, Cena has looked pretty good since coming back in October and has returned to form, consistently beating opponents everyone knows he will have no trouble dispatching. That trend could easily continue at the Royal Rumble. Placing Cena in the match will guarantee one thing: cleaning house. Expect Cena to enter when there is a whole mass of humanity in the ring. Once his music hits, he will emerge, rush to the ring and throw out countless other Superstars. However, he will not, and must not, win. It is always far more intriguing to see the good guy chase the bad guy who has gotten the best of him. It is not particularly entertaining, however, to watch Cena do the same thing year in and year out. His act is tired and completely predictable. And for all of the talk about the company wanting a fresher product or trying to implement younger stars as top guys, it does not ever happen. If history is any indication and the company sticks with tried-and-true methods rather than shaking things up, expect Cena to be tossed out of the match by whoever the company plans to have him feud with next. It might even be Batista, who will need a series of high-profile matches with Cena in the months leading up to WrestleMania to build his momentum and prepare for his possible battle with Orton. In any event, Cenas presence does nothing to increase the compelling nature of the Royal Rumble match itself. Audiences react well to shocking events, not tried-and-true methods. The return of Diesel at the event in 2011 caused monster reactions. The same goes for Goldust in 2013. Whoever the surprise entrants into the events this year are, they will likely get a shockingly deafening reaction, while Cenas possible participation will be met with the normal mixture of a chorus of boos and cheers. But more boos. While he continues to be a proven commodity, and many younger fans eat up whatever Cena is serving, it might be time for the company to let the 36-year-old Cena take a slight step back in order to let more compelling and younger superstars begin their ascent to the top of the WWE ladder. But in all likelihood, we will still be having this same conversation in 10 years, as Cena prepares to lace up his boots for what will be his final Royal Rumble match. Which, of course, means we will have the same conversation in 20 years as well. And maybe even longer after that.

John Cena's Inclusion In Royal Rumble Would Hamper Battle Royal

The time has come for 30 men to enter a WWE ring, with only one emerging when the dust finally settles. Ladies and gentlemen, the Royal Rumble is looming right on the horizon. And heading into the event, the clearcut favorite to win the match is John Cena. No, he might not be the most popular choice or even the most skilled. But Cena brings a certain intangible to his approach, and that alone is what could carry him to victory. Cena has become a major media darling and a bona fide celebrity. However, he has also become a caricature for what professional wrestling was before the Attitude Era kicked off in the late 1990s. He is a proven hero, and the WWEs resident savior. He has won the Royal Rumble twice (in 2008 and 2013) and is a 14-time world champion. He is to modern wrestling what Hulk Hogan was in the 1980s and 1990s. No matter how down he gets or how impressive the threat, in the end, Cena will always come out on top. And while no one is questioning Cenas credentials, having him enterand probably winthe most talked about match of early 2014 is something that no one wants to see happen. Granted, Cena is a marquee name. No one in the company seems to do as much public relations or charity work, and few make as many public appearances on television. Cena is a machine when it comes to making himself a true pop culture entity. However, his constant triumphs over seemingly insurmountable odds have become tired, and very few in the WWE Universe seem to be throwing their support behind him lately. In fact, the biggest cheers that Cena has gotten in recent months have been for his promos in which he mentions Daniel Bryanwho, at the moment, is
