Moses Receives the Commandments Obey every word of these instructions…they are not empty words—they are your life!
(Exodus 19) (Deuteronomy 32:46b-47a)
#1. Have No Other Gods but Me I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your
(Exodus 20:2-3) slavery. You must not have any other god but me. (Exodus 20:2-3)
#2. Do Not Worship Idols You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens
(Exodus 20:4-6) or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the
Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I
lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children
in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. But I lavish unfailing love for a
thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands. (Exodus 20:4-6)
#3. Keep God’s Name Holy You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go
(Exodus 20:7) unpunished if you misuse his name. (Exodus 20:7)
#4. Set Aside A Special Day for God Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. You have six days each week
(Exodus 20:8-11) for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord
your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your
sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners
living among you. For in six days the Lord made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and
everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the Lord blessed the
Sabbath day and set it apart as holy. (Exodus 20:8-11)
#5. Honor Your Father and Mother Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your
(Exodus 20:12) God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12)
#6. Do Not Murder (Exodus 20:13) You must not murder. (Exodus 20:13)
#7. Be True to Your Husband or Wife You must not commit adultery. (Exodus 20:14)
(Exodus 20:14)
#8. Do Not Steal (Exodus 20:15) You must not steal. (Exodus 20:15)
#9. Do Not Lie (Exodus 20:16) You must not testify falsely against your neighbor. (Exodus 20:16)
#10. Do Not Want What Others Have You must not covet your neighbor’s house, You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male
(Exodus 20:17) or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor. (Ex 20:17)
Reviewing the Top Ten Jesus replied, “’You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all
(Exodus 20:1-17) your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment, A second is equally important:
‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are
