Plant Parts & Function Lesson Plan
by Monica Findley Introduction: This lesson is an introduction to plant parts and the function of each part. Grade Level/Content Area: This is a 1st grade Science lesson Standards: VA Standards of Learning 1.4 The students will investigate & understand that plants have basic life needs and functional parts and can be classified according to certain characteristics. Lesson Objective: The students will be able to identify the different plant parts. They will also analyze and distinguish the different functions of each plant part, which helps the plant grow and survive. (Roots, Stems, Leaves, Flowers, Fruits & Seeds) Timeline: This lesson will take four or five 45-minute sessions. Materials: SMARTBoard, iPads, KWL Chart, QR Codes, Teacher-made Plant Part Information Sheet, pencils, paper Learning Activities: Within a whole group setting, the Teacher will tap into the students prior knowledge of plants & their parts with a KWL Chart on the SMARTBoard. The students will participate in a turn & talk to your partner discussion to share any type of experiences or prior knowledge of plants. The Teacher will then record known knowledge of plants and their parts, as well as any inquiry questions, on the KWL Chart. The Teacher will record his/her own inquiry questions, such as: Do all plants have the same parts? What are the functiosn of all plant parts? How does each plant part help the plan grow? Then the students will be divided into pairs. They will share an iPad and use it to scan the QR Codes around the room. Here are some examples of QR codes that I generated, to use with this lesson plan:

Then record their findings on a teacher-made Plant Part Information Sheet.
After the students have gathered & recorded all of the plant part information, they will continue to work together and go on to the Bubble.us website:
https://bubbl.us/?h=9b0e9/141342/63dSD.o81BoD. In the Bubble.us website, the students will brainstorm how the plant parts work together to help the plant grow. They will then create a Plant Parts Think Map. After having time to think about and synthesis the new content area knowledge, the students will create their own Plant Magazine on the following website: http://www.themeefy.com/index The students will be able to view and choose different videos and websites to include in their magazine. Here is an example: http://www.themeefy.com/MonicaFindley/plantpartstheirfunctions The Teacher will reconvene with the students, in a whole group setting, to discuss What they have learned , in the KWL Chart, about plant parts & how they help plants to grow. Assessments: The students will be assessed informally, through Teacher observations & formally, with the completion of their Bubble.us brainstorming project and their Plant Magazine.
