Diarrhea

In patients with diarrhea, a loose or watery stool may be frequently passed due to
diseases of the spleen, stomach or large and small intestines. It may occur anytime,
but is most common in summer and autumn.

Acute and chronic enteritis, tuberculosis of the intestines, dysfunction of intestines,
and irritable colon with diarrhea can be treated by the following methods.

Applications of hand therapy:

Massage therapy:

Location: Chest reflective point, stomach and intestine reflective point, chest and
abdomen area, Sanjian (LI 3), diarrhea point, Dagukong (EX-UE 5), stomach
acupoint, stomach area, intestine area, liver area, large intestine acupoint and kidney
acupoint.

Method of manipulation: Digit-pressing and kneading maneuvers applied at stomach
area, digestive tract area, intestine area and anus area; pressing and kneading
maneuvers at chest reflective point, stomach and intestine reflective point, Sanjian (LI
3), diarrhea point, Dagukong (EX-UE 5) and stomach acupoint; and pinching and
digit-pressing maneuvers at large intestine acupoint and kidney acupoint.

Acupuncture therapy:

At regular and extra acupoints:

Location: Quchi (LI 11 ), Hegu (LI 4) and Shousanli (LI 10).

Method of manipulation: The needles are inserted and retained for 30 minutes.

At reflective points:

Location: Stomach and intestine point and spleen point.

Method of manipulation: The needles are inserted for 1.6 cm and retained for three
minutes.
At special acupoint beside the second metacarpal bone:

Location: Sensitive tender spot between stomach acupoint and leg acupoint.

Method of manipulation: The needle is inserted for 3.3 cm and retained for 20
minutes.

Hand bath:

Recipe: Mike (Fructus Papaeris) 20 g, Roudoukou (Semen Myrisiticae) 20 g, Guizhi
(cassia twig) 20 g, Wuzhuyu ( Evodiae) 30 g, Muxiang (costus root) 20 g and chenpi
(mandarium peel) 20 g.

Function: To warm spleen and stomach and stop diarrhea. Method of manipulation: A
hot decoction of these herbs is used to steam and then wash both hands for 30 minutes,
two to three times a day.
