Robert Havighurst believed that learning is basic to life and that people continue to learn throughout life. He described growth and development as occurring during six stages, each associated with six to ten tasks to be learned. Havighursts developmental tasks provide a framework that the nurse can use to evaluate a persons general accomplishments. Sigmund Freuds Psychoanalytic Theory
According to Freuds theory, human behavior is motivated by psychodynamic forces within an individuals unconscious mind. Driven to act by these internal forces, individuals repeatedly interact with the external environment. The individuals personality and psychosexual identity are developed through the accumulation of these interactional experiences. Personality according to Freud consists of the id, ego and superego. Also, Freud identified five psychosexual stages of development: oral, anal, phallic, latency and genital stage. If an individuals needs are met during a given stage and conflicts are resolved, development will proceed normally to the next stage, and the developing personality will be integrated in a healthy way. If resolution of the conflict does not occur, however, the individual will become fixated at that stage, and personality and psychosexual identity will be arrested or impaired.
