F
all is officially here, and that
can mean only one thing. No,
not football. Or pumpkin spice
lattes. Or back to school. Or Hal-
loween. Or Thanksgiving.
Its election season!
OK, so maybe youre not as excited
as we are, but you should be. You cant
vote on the next president of the Unit-
ed States this fall that wont come for
another three years but the 2013 elec-
tion will probably have a greater im-
pact on your day-to-day life than that
anyway.
Thats because New Jerseys guber-
natorial race will highlight the Nov. 5
General Election, with incumbent Re-
publican Chris Christie taking on
state Senate Democrat Barbara
Buono.
Didnt realize this was happening?
Then you probably havent watched
any television, listened to any radio,
read any newspapers or surfed the
web at all over the last few months.
That barrage of political advertising
is only going to increase as we creep
closer and closer to election day.
The governor in New Jersey has a
much bigger impact on your day-to-
day life than the president of our na-
tion. His or her administrations deci-
sions affect you more immediately,
from the taxes you pay, to the cost of
your insurance, to the availability of
jobs, to how fast youre allowed to
drive on the highway, and so on.
Sure, the president gets more public-
ity for his actions, but what his admin-
istration does has more of a longer-
lasting impact on your life.
The point here is that, despite its
less attractive appeal although this
Christie vs. Buono race certainly is at-
tractive as a New Jersey resident,
you should be just as interested in this
election, and just as willing to vote, as
you are for the next president.
So go to the polls on Nov. 5 to cast
your vote.
In addition to the governors race,
you will have the chance, in many
towns and boroughs, to vote for school
board candidates and council/commit-
tee/mayoral candidates. When the
dust has settled, this could end up
being one of the more impactful elec-
tions on your daily life in recent mem-
ory.
Dont be lazy. Dont feel like Nov. 5,
2013, isnt as special as Nov. 6, 2012,
was or as special as Nov. 8, 2016, will
be. Thats simply not true for New Jer-
seyans. And if youre really in the vot-
ing spirit now, dont forget you can
vote on Oct. 16 in a special election for
a U.S. Senate seat between Democrat
Cory Booker and Republican Steve
Lonegan.
This is going to be fun. Are you
ready to participate?
in our opinion
Get up off your couch and vote
This election is more impactful for N.J. residents than presidential race
Your thoughts
Do you plan on voting in the Nov. 5
General Election? Why or why not? Do
you think it holds the same importance
as a presidential election? Let your
voice be heard through a letter to the
editor.
New Yorkers better off today
than any time in history
In a few weeks, New Yorkers will be
choosing their next mayor.
After 20 years of being governed on Re-
publican principles, New Yorkers are
blessed with record-low crime, record-high
job creation, record-high life expectancy,
record-high graduation rates and a grow-
ing population for the first time in 60 years,
etc., and yet, 68 percent of New Yorkers are
looking for a new direction!
The argument for change, as advocated
by the Democratic candidate for mayor, is
that all of these advances have been
achieved on the back of the poor.
That's plain untrue, but the argument it-
self has been consistently used by liberals
when there is nothing else to say.
Every New Yorker, rich or poor, is far
better off today than at any time through-
out the city's history.
Let me ask a simple question.
Have people totally forgotten what New
York looked like 20 years ago, when the city,
after a long succession of Democratic may-
ors, ending with David Dinkins, was finan-
cially bankrupt and had turned into the
crime capital of the United States pretty
much what Detroit looks like today.
They want that back?
Karsten Malmos

The Interact Club at Shawnee
High School recently donated
more than $1,400 to HopeAlive!
Clinics in Haiti.
Interact is Rotary Internation-
als service club for young people,
to ages 18. The clubs are self-gov-
erning and self-supporting.
Shawnee s Interact Club is spon-
sored by the Medford-Vincentown
Rotary Club.
Each year, Shawnee High
Schools Interact Club members
participate in a school-year-long
series of fundraising projects to
promote local, national and inter-
national understanding and good-
will as part of the Rotary spon-
sored efforts.
I traveled to Haiti with a group
of volunteers last summer and we
helped at the clinics. After seeing
the poverty and problems that are
still happening in Haiti, I wanted
to do something to help. The club
members picked HopeAlive! Clin-
ics as a beneficiary of our fund-
raising efforts, said Taylor Pat-
terson, who, along with Erin Hart-
man, is club co-president.
Interact members raised the
money by organizing car washes,
pretzel sales and bake sales
throughout the 2012-2013 school
year.
Headquartered in Medford, Ho-
peAlive! Clinic has been minister-
ing to the poor in Haiti since 1998.
The main clinic in Mariani, Haiti,
is just six miles north of the 2010
earthquakes epicenter. Ho-
peAlive! founders Frank and
Leslee Jacobs, along with their
board, organize monthly mission
trips to Haiti. The missions vary,
bringing volunteering health pro-
fessionals and everyday folk
ready to roll up their sleeves.
These American volunteers as-
sist the Haitian staff of doctors
and nurses at the clinic.
This year so far we have treat-
ed more than 16,000 people,
noted Leslee Jacobs. The dona-
tion from the Interact Club will
cover medicine for an entire
month.
All donations will be directed
exclusively for Haiti Relief.
No one in the U.S. collects a
salary from this ministry.

gagement while he was in New
Jersey. The staff member report-
ed that it was imperative each stu-
dent hear about Herrens story.
According to Herrens website,
theherrenproject.org, Herren is a
basketball legend from Fall River,
Mass. He realized his dreams by
playing for the Celtics in the
NBA, only to lose it all to addic-
tion. Herren has been drug-free
and alcohol-free since Aug. 1,
2008. He has refocused his life to
put sobriety and family first. Off
the court, Herren continues to
share his story with audiences in
the hopes of reaching just one
person and making a difference
in their life.
With the release of his memoir,
Basketball Junkie, in May 2011,
Herren was approached by hun-
dreds of people and their families
looking for assistance in their
road to recovery.
Inspired by their stories, he
formed The Herren Project to ed-
ucate at-risk populations on ad-
diction and help others in taking
the first steps toward recovery
and a life of sobriety, the website
said.
His story to recovery is amaz-
ing. He would go as far as pur-
chasing cocaine in his Celtics jer-
sey, OMalley said. Its sad kids
are taking prescription pills out
of their parents cabinet. Thats
all it takes. Were really excited
about the difference he can
make.
Two programs will be running
at Cherokee, Lenape, Shawnee
and Seneca high schools through-
out the first semester, ensuring
each student hears what Herren
has to say.
Additionally, a ninth speaking
engagement will be held at the
districts performing arts center
at Cherokee on Nov. 18.
LDTV created a commercial,
which can be viewed on the dis-
trict website.
According to OMalley, a sched-
ule and tickets will be available
online.
In other news:
Birnbohm reported a success-
ful first day of school, thanking
the department of transportation
for a smooth start. She noted how
energized and enthused staff
members were after summer
break. On opening day, teachers
were provided with a district
presentation, which addressed
digital footprint and professional
development. The staff was also
given an overview of the new
evaluation tools.
Former LRHSD board of edu-
cation president Joe Fisicaro Sr.
was honored for his appointment
as vice president for the state
Board of Education. He spent 18
years at the LRHSD and he spent
33 years as an educator in the
Philadelphia School District. He
is currently serving at the
Burlington County Institute of
Technology as a special educa-
tion staff member.
The Shawnee boys soccer
tean donated its time on the
hottest day of the summer to
help clean up Bob Bende Park, ac-
cording to Birnbolm.
Shawnee students worked with
the Medford Historical Society to
help convert the Bunning Farm
House into the educational center.
The next board of education
meeting is scheduled for Oct. 9 at
7:30 p.m. at the District Building
at 93 Willow Grove Road in Sha-
mong.

The following are on file with
the Medford Township Police De-
partment:
On Sept. 20, 2012, at 1:58 p.m.,
Medford Township Police re-
sponded to the PSE&G substa-
tion, located on Route 70, for the
report of a burglary.
The investigation revealed that
an unknown subject cut the fence
to gain access to the area. The
subject then entered a structure
and removed approximately 100
feet of copper bus bar. Detectives
were able to locate blood evidence
from the scene, which later iden-
tified the suspect through a DNA
match.
On Sept. 11, the suspect was
charged with burglary and theft
pertaining to this incident. He
was already incarcerated in the
Burlington County Jail on an un-
related matter. His bail was set at
$50,000 and he awaits a Burling-
ton County Superior Court hear-
ing.
On Sept. 11 at approximately 6
p.m., the Medford Township Po-
lice and Fire departments re-
sponded to the area of South
Main Street and Mill Street for a
report of electrical wires down
and utility poles on fire.
Emergency units determined
that several utility poles on South
Main Street, Mill Street and
Chapel Avenue were affected,
causing primary electrical lines
to fall to the ground and cause
several of the utility poles to
catch fire.
The area was secured utilizing
Medford Police and Fire appara-
tus along with a Fire-Police Strike
Force.
Upon the arrival of PSE&G,
the power was cut to the effected
utility poles, deeming the area to
be safe.
As a result of this incident, the
surrounding roadways were
closed for approximately four
hours while emergency crews
worked to secure the power.
Only a few businesses and resi-
dences lost power during this in-
cident, with no injuries being re-
ported. The cause of the wires
falling is unknown at this time.
PSE&G and Verizon Services
worked in the area to repair any
damaged lines and services.
On Sept. 11, at approximately
7:22 p.m., the Medford Township
Police were dispatched to the
Conte Plaza on Stokes Road for a
report of an occupied suspicious
vehicle parked next to Canal's
Liquors.
Upon arrival, police located the
vehicle, a white Lexus, parked
next to the building and occupied
by a female.
While speaking with the driver,
who was later identified, a hypo-
dermic needle was observed in
the door panel of the vehicle.
While recovering the item, a
glass pipe, commonly used for
smoking marijuana, was also re-
covered from the door panel.
The suspect was placed under
arrest and transported to the
Medford Township Public Safety
Building where she was
processed and later released on a
summons complaint without inci-
dent.

Girls of all ages interested in
making new friends, learning
new skills and having lots of fun
are invited to join the Girl Scouts
of Medford during recruitment
night Sept. 26 from 6:30-8 p.m., at
Haines Sixth Grade Center.
Back to school means back to
Scouting, and the opportunity to
join the largest organization in
the world devoted to girls, said
Sui (Sue) Applegate, manager of
the Medford Unit of the Girl
Scouts.
The Medford Unit is one of the
largest in southern New Jersey,
with close to 40 troops.
There are troops at almost
every grade level at each of Med-
fords public schools, and at St.
Marys as well. New troops are
forming each year.
Girls can start as Daisies in
kindergarten and first grade, be-
come Brownies in second and
third, Juniors in fourth and fifth,
Cadettes in middle school, and
then Seniors and Ambassadors in
high school. Most begin as
Daisies or Brownies, so we have
new troops forming every fall,
Applegate said.
At recruitment, girls and
adults will be able to sign up on
the spot.
The registration fee is $30 for
girls and $15 for adults, who are
needed to serve as leaders or co-
leaders, treasurers, first-aiders
and the all-important Cookie
Mom. Parents, grandparents,
aunts, uncles or other responsible
adults interested in helping a
troop succeed are welcome to vol-
unteer.
Troops usually meet after
school twice a month, but some
meet less frequently or in the
evenings, depending on the de-
sires of the troop and the avail-
ability of the leaders.
Volunteering is a great way to
get to know your daughters class-
mates and their parents, but the
most rewarding part is watching
the girls learn to become confi-
dent, caring and more adventur-
ous, Applegate said.
She added that online and in-
person training are available to
all volunteers through the Girl
Scout Council of Central and
Southern New Jersey, and that
the Medford Unit also provides
advisors for new leaders and vol-
unteers. Representatives will be
available on recruitment night to
answer questions.
The recruitment event will be
held in the cafeteria of the Haines
center, 162 Stokes Road, Medford.
Online registration is available at
www.gscsnj.org.
Everyone registering online, or
in person, will receive a certifi-
cate for a Girl Scout activity book,
which is available through the re-
gional council. Questions about
the registration process can be di-
rected to registrar@gsmedford-
nj.org.
Families unable to pay the reg-
istration fee are urged to contact
the Council Cares Financial Aid
Office, which provides confiden-
tial, need-based financial assis-
tance to individuals seeking Girl
Scout membership.

aid, email councilcares@gscsnj.
