MARCH IN MANCHESTER STRIKE TOGETHER TO WIN
illions of US face the squeeze as the bosses try to make us work harder, for longer and for less pay. The Tories drive to make us pay for an economic crisis not of our making means more people every day find it harder to make ends meet. Last week we had Tory Education minister, Michael Gove, tell people who are forced to rely on food banks that it was their own fault because they cant budget properly. We cant let the Tories get away with this. The demonstration in Manchester in a weeks time at the Tory party conference is a brilliant opportunity to put thousands of people on the streets against their viscious policies. Firefighters protest in London
Solidarity
There are thousands of people prepared to say enough is enough and want to take a stand and strike back. These fights can be strengthened if we organise solidarity. This week the firefighters union (FBU) announced a strike next Wednesday 25 September, over attacks on their pensions. The strike will involve firefighters across the whole of England and Wales and is set to take place between 12 noon and 4pm. On the day FBU members deserve support for their picket lines. Find out from your local fire station what you can do to support the strike. Trade union delegations with banners should visit the pickets. Last Friday, workers who are employed by Glasgow city council walked out on unofficial strike, in a brilliant act of solidarity.
One of their colleagues was suspended for refusing to do work that would normally be covered by a vacant post. Cuts mean more and more of us are left with an ever increasing workload. Public services are being run into the ground. On Monday the strike spread across the city involving up to 100 workers. And on Wednesday they returned to work after management agreed to reinstate their colleague.

They have shown how to fight. And they defied the anti-trade union laws to do it! Tthey are now fighting to stop the use of agency workers in the plant. Mass pickets this week have twice stopped trucks leaving the plant. The recently announced privatisation of Royal Mail, is the target of a major campaign by the CWU post workers union. They are set to ballot at the end of September for a national strike over privatisation, pensions, pay and workload. In higher education, UCU and Unison members are balloting for strikes over pay. We need to support and spread the word about all of these disputes and others but what we really need is for our trade union leaders to link up the fights and to call coordinated strikes. We cant rely on Labour to change things. Ed Milliband is set to weaken the trade unions influnce on Labour and even their best election pledges cant be trusted. Strikes on the scale of the strike of 2.6 million on 30 November 2011 could bring the Tories down.
