Toronto film festival promises
WikiLeaks 'full story'
OTTAWA - North America's largest film festival
opens Thursday with a drama about real life
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, promising
the "ful l story" behi nd the whi stl ebl ower
website.
"The Fifth Estate" by director Bill Condon is
based on a book by Assange's once-trusted
lieutenant and former WikiLeaks spokesman
Daniel Domscheit-Berg, about events leading
to the largest secrets leak in American history
in 2010.
Its world premiere comes just weeks after
soldier Chelsea Manning was sentenced to 35
years in prison for sending 700,000 documents
-- military war logs and US diplomatic cables --
to WikiLeaks, which published them.
"It' s not that common for a feature fi l m,
particularly a Hollywood feature film, to deal
with a story that is so current in the news,"
commented festival boss Cameron Bailey. "So
it's interesting to see."
The film festival, runs through September 15,
will showcase 366 feature films, including 146
world premieres.

Snake and Rabbit
A snake and a rabbit were racing along a pair
of intersecting forest pathways one day, when
t hey col l i ded at t he i nt ersect i on. They
immediately began to argue with one another
as to who was at fault for the mishap.
When the snake remarked that he had been
blind since birth, and thus should be given
additional leeway, the rabbit said that he, too,
had been blind since birth. The two animals
then forgot about the collision and began
commiserating concerning the problems of
being blind.
The snake said that his greatest regret was
the loss of his identity. He had never been able
to see his reflection in the water, and for that
reason did not know exactly what he looked
like, or even what he was. The rabbit declared
that he had the same problem. Seeing a way
that they could help each other, the rabbit
proposed that one feel the other from head to
toe, and then try to describe what the other
animal was.
The snake agreed, and started by winding
hi msel f around t he r abbi t . Af t er a f ew
moments, he announced, "You've got very
soft, fuzzy fur, long ears, big rear feet, and a
little fuzzy ball for a tail. I think that you must
be a bunny rabbit!"
The rabbit was much reli eved to find hi s
identity, and proceeded to return the favor to
the snake. After feeling about the snake's body
for a few minutes, he asserted, "Well, you're
scaly, you're slimy, you've got beady little eyes,
you squirm and slither all the time, and you've
got a forked tongue. I think you're a lawyer!"

Authentic Indian Cuisine in the Town
To Karachi with Love
By: JALEES HAZIR
The PML-N government at the center has
spurred the launching of a targeted operation
against the many criminal-cum-political mafias
infesting Karachi. Though it is too soon to say
how successful the present initiative would be
in rescuing the city from the tentacl es of
rampant lawlessness, its contours, as unveiled
by the federal interior minister in his press
conference l ast week, i nspi re hope. The
question is: Will the government be able to
stay its course and transcend petty political
expediencies that have brought every similar
initiative in the recent past to naught?
The government's announcement to finally
catch the bull of Karachi's many woes by its
horns coincided with the resumption of the
Supr eme Cour t heari ngs regardi ng t he
implementation of its 2011 order in the Karachi
Law & Order case. The directives of the apex
court in that order could have contributed
towards bringing the restive situation in the city
under control but, as in so many other cases,
they were largely ignored by the previous
government. The interior minister's statement
that his government would incorporate these
directives in its policy for Karachi is reassuring.
The bit about consensus among poli ti cal
parties is bound to get tricky. Already, after the
initial crackdown, the MQM and ANP have
started accusing the PPP Sindh government of
victimizing its workers. As pointed out by the
interior minister, the identified extortionists and
target killers are affiliated with political parties.
Earlier, in its 2011 order, the Supreme Court
had also observed that the report of the Joint
Investigation Team clearly implicated the bulk
of political parties operating in Karachi for
harboring armed wings whose members were
involved in criminal activities. And while every
party i nsi sts that i t wi l l not protect such
elements in its fold, they fail to live up to these
pronouncements.
Despite the bad hand that has been dealt to
Paki st an' s premi er ci t y, i t s energy and
dynami sm i s remarkabl e. I t s brave and
hardworking citizens refuse to be cowed down
by t he br eakdown of gover nance and
insecurity that hangs over their city like an
incessant threat. The resilience and enterprise
of its diverse population is indomitable. Truly a
mini-Pakistan, people from all over the country
have made it their home and you see them
going about their many businesses on its
many busy roads stretching for long miles.
Despi te the overdose of i dent i ty pol i ti cs
imposed upon them, you see them working
and transacting with each other regardless of
ethnicity or race.
Despite all its troubles, Karachi is still an
amazingly producti ve ci ty, pul sating wi th
immense possibilities far greater than what its
situation allows. Give it peace and see it
skyrocket to its rightful place as one of the
greatest metropolises of the world.

10 Simple Things You Can Do Today
Continued from previous page
Of course i t' s i mportant to practi ce "real
smiles" where you use your eye sockets. It's
very easy to spot the difference:
Make yourself happier smiling
Smi l i ng makes us f eel good whi ch al so
increases our attentional flexibility and our
ability to think holistically. When this idea was
tested by Johnson et al. (2010), the results
showed t hat par t i ci pant s who smi l ed
performed better on attentional tasks which
required seeing the whole forest rather than
just the trees.
A smile is also a good way to alleviate some of
the pain we feel in troubling circumstances:
Smiling is one way to reduce the distress
c au s ed b y an up s et t i n g s i t uat i on .
Psychologists call this the facial feedback
hypothesis. Even forcing a smile when we
don't feel like it is enough to lift our mood
slightly (this is one example of embodied
cognition).
8. Plan a trip - but don't take one
As opposed to actually taking a holiday, it
seems that planning a vacation or just a break
from work can improve our happiness. A study
published in the journal, Applied Research in
Quality of Life showed that the highest spike in
happiness came during the planning stage of a
vacation as employees enjoyed the sense of
anticipation:
In the study, the effect of vacation anticipation
boosted happiness for eight weeks.
After the vacation, happiness quickly dropped
back to baseline levels for most people.
Shawn Achor has some info for us on this
point, as well:
One study found that people who just thought
about watching their favorite movie actually
raised their endorphin levels by 27 percent.
If you can't take the time for a vacation right
now, or even a night out with friends, put
something on the calendar-even if it's a month
or a year down the road. Then whenever you
need a boost of happiness, remind yourself
about it.
9. Meditate - rewire your brain for happiness
Meditation is often touted as an important
habit for improving focus, clarity and attention
span, as well as helping to keep you calm. It
turns out it's also useful for improving your
happiness:
I n one st udy, a r esear ch t eam f r om
Massachusetts General Hospital looked at the
brain scans of 16 people before and after they
part i ci pat ed i n an ei ght-week course i n
mindfulness meditation. The study, published
in the January issue of Psychiatry Research:
Neuroimaging, concluded that after completing
the course, parts of the participants' brains
a s s o c i a t e d wi t h c o mp a s s i o n a n d
self-awareness grew, and parts associated
with stress shrank.
Meditation literally clears your mind and calms
you down, it's been often proven to be the
single most effective way to live a happier live.
I believe that this graphic explains it the best:
cal mi ng-mind-brai n-waves make yoursel f
happier.
According to Shawn Achor, meditation can
actually make you happier long-term:
Studies show that in the minutes right after
meditating, we experience feelings of calm
and contentment, as wel l as hei ghtened
awareness and empathy. And, research even
shows that regular meditation can permanently
rewire the brain to raise levels of happiness.
The fact that we can actually alter our brain
structure through mediation is most surprising
to me and somewhat reassuring that however
we feel and think today isn't permanent.
10. Pr act i ce gr at i t ude - i ncr ease bot h
happiness and life satisfaction.
This is a seemingly simple strategy, but I've
personally found it to make a huge difference
to my outl ook. There are lots of ways to
practice gratitude, from keeping a journal of
things you're grateful for, sharing three good
things that happen each day with a friend or
your partner, and going out of your way to
show gratitude when others help you.
The Journal of Happiness studies published a
study that used letters of gratitude to test how
bei ng grat ef ul can af f ect our l evel s of
happiness:
Participants included 219 men and women
who wrote three letters of gratitude over a 3
week period.
Resul t s i ndi cat ed that wri t i ng l et t ers of
gratitude increased participants' happiness
and l i f e sat i sf act i on, whi l e decr easi ng
depressive symptoms.

memory
This is pretty good news for those of us who
are worried about fitting new habits into our
already-busy schedules. Twenty minutes is a
short enough time to spend outside that you
could fit it into your commute or even your
lunch break.
A UK study from the University of Sussex also
found that bei ng out doors made peopl e
happier:
Being outdoors, near the sea, on a warm,
sunny weekend afternoon is the perfect spot
for most. In fact, participants were found to be
substantially happier outdoors in all natural
envi ronment s t han t hey wer e i n ur ban
environments.
The Amer i can Met eor ol ogi cal Soci et y
published research in 2011 that found current
temperat ure has a bi gger ef f ect on our
happiness than variables like wind speed and
humidity, or even the average temperature
over the course of a day. It also found that
happiness is maximized at 13.9C, so keep an
eye on the weather forecast before heading
outside for your 20 minutes of fresh air.
6. Help others - 100 hours a year is the
magical number
One of the most counterintuitive pieces of
advice I found is that to make yourself feel
happier, you should help others. In fact, 100
hours per year (or two hours per week) is the
optimal time we should dedicate to helping
others in order to enrich our lives.
If we go back to Shawn Achor's book again,
he says this about helping others:
when researchers interviewed more than
150 people about their recent purchases, they
found that money spent on activities-such as
concerts and group dinners out-brought far
more pleasure than material purchases like
shoes, televisions, or expensive watches.
Spending money on other peopl e, cal led
"prosocial spending," also boosts happiness.
The Journal of Happiness Studies published a
study that explored this very topic:
Participants recalled a previous purchase
made for either themselves or someone else
and then reported their happiness. Afterward,
part i ci pant s chose whet her t o spend a
monetary windfall on themselves or someone
else.
Participants assigned to recall a purchase
made for someone else reported feel i ng
significantly happier immediately after this
recollection; most importantly, the happier
participants felt, the more likely they were to
choose to spend a windfall on someone else in
the near future.
So spending money on other people makes us
happier than buying stuff for ourselves. What
about spending our time on other people? A
study of volunteering in Germany explored
how volunteers were affected when thei r
opportunities to help others were taken away:
Shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall but
before the German reunion, the first wave of
data of the GSOEP was collected in East
Germany. Volunteering was still widespread.
Due to the shock of the reunion, a large
portion of the infrastructure of volunteering
(e.g. sports cl ubs associated wi th fi rms)
coll apsed and people randoml y lost thei r
opportunities for volunteering. Based on a
compari son of the change i n subj ecti ve
well-being of these people and of people from
the control group who had no change in their
volunteer status, the hypothesis is supported
that volunteering is rewarding in terms of
higher life satisfaction.
I n hi s book Fl our i sh: A Vi si onar y New

University of Pennsylvania professor Martin
Seligman explains that helping others can
improve our own lives:
we sci enti sts have found that doi ng a
kindness produces the single most reliable
momentary i ncrease i n well -being of any
exercise we have tested.
7. Practice smiling - it can alleviate pain
Smiling itself can make us feel better, but it's
more effecti ve when we back i t up wi th
positive thoughts, according to this study:
A new study led by a Michigan State University
business scholar suggests customer-service
workers who fake smile throughout the day
worsen their mood and withdraw from work,
affecting productivity. But workers who smile
as a result of cultivating positive thoughts -
such as a tropical vacation or a child's recital -
improve their mood and withdraw less.

before, exploring how much sleep we really
need to be productive.
3. Move closer to work - a short commute is
worth more than a big house
Our commut e t o t he of f i ce can have a
surprisingly powerful impact on our happiness.
The fact that we tend to do this twice a day,
five days a week, makes it unsurprising that its
effect would build up over time and make us
less and less happy.
According to The Art of Manliness, having a
long commute is something we often fail to
realize will affect us so dramatically:
while many voluntary conditions don't affect
our happiness in the long term because we
accl i mat e t o t hem, peopl e never get
accustomed to their daily slog to work because
sometimes the traffic is awful and sometimes
it's not.
We tend to try to compensate for thi s by
having a bigger house or a better job, but
these compensations just don't work:
Two Swiss economists who studied the effect
of commuting on happiness found that such
factors coul d not make up for the misery
created by a long commute.
4. Spend time with friends and family - don't
regret it on your deathbed.
Staying in touch with friends and family is one
of the top five regrets of the dying. If you want
more evidence that it's beneficial for you, I've
found some research that proves it can make
you happier right now.
Social time is highly valuable when it comes to
improving our happiness, even for introverts.
Several studies have found that time spent
with friends and family makes a big difference
to how happy we feel, generally.
I love the way Harvard happi ness expert
Daniel Gilbert explains it:
We are happy when we have family, we are
happy when we have friends and almost all
the other things we think make us happy are
actually just ways of getting more family and
friends.
George Vaillant is the director of a 72-year
study of the lives of 268 men.
In an interview in the March 2008 newsletter to
the Grant Study subjects, Vaillant was asked,
"What have you learned from the Grant Study
men?" Vaillant's response: "That the only thing
that really matters in life are your relationships
to other people."
The men's relationships at age 47, he found,
predicted late-life adjustment better than any
other variable, except defenses. Good sibling
relationships seem especially powerful: 93
percent of the men who were thriving at age
65 had been close to a brother or sister when
younger.
In fact, a study published in the Journal of
Soc i o- Ec onomi c s s t at es t han your
relationships are worth more than $100,000:
Using the British Household Panel Survey, I
find that an increase in the level of social
involvements is worth up to an extra 85,000 a
year i n terms of l i f e sati sf acti on. Actual
changes in income, on the other hand, buy
very little happiness.
I think that last line is especially fascinating:
Actual changes in income, on the other hand,
buy very little happiness. So we could increase
our annual income by hundreds of thousands
of dollars and still not be as happy as if we
i ncr eased t he st r engt h of our soci al
relationships.
The Terman study, which is covered in The
Longevity Project, found that relationships and
how we help others were important factors in
living long, happy lives:
We fi gured t hat i f a Terman part i ci pant
sincerely felt that he or she had friends and
relatives to count on when having a hard time
then that person would be healthier. Those
who f el t ver y l oved and car ed f or , we
predicted, would live the longest.
Surprise: our prediction was wrong Beyond
social network size, the clearest benefit of
social relationships came from helping others.
Those who helped their friends and neighbors,
advising and caring for others, tended to live to
old age.
5. Go outside - happiness is maximized at
13.9C
In The Happiness Advantage, Shawn Achor
recommends spending time in the fresh air to
improve your happiness:
Making time to go outside on a nice day also
delivers a huge advantage; one study found
that spending 20 minutes outside in good
weather not only boosted positive mood, but
broadened thinking and improved orking

10 Simple Things You Can Do Today
That Will Make You Happier, Backed By Science
By: Belle Beth Cooper
Make you happierHappiness is so interesting,
because we all have different ideas about
what it is and how to get it. It's also no surprise
that it's the Nr.1 value for Buffer's culture, if
you see our slidedeck about it. So naturally we
are obsessed with it.
I would love to be happier, as I'm sure most
peopl e woul d, so I t hought i t woul d be
interesting to find some ways to become a
happier person that are actually backed up by
science. Here are ten of the best ones I found.
1. Exercise more - 7 minutes might be enough.
You might have seen some talk recently about
the scientific 7 minute workout mentioned in
The New York Ti mes. So i f you thought
exercise was something you didn't have time
for, maybe you can fit it in after all.
Exercise has such a profound effect on our
happiness and well-being that it's actually
been proven to be an effective strategy for
overcoming depression. In a study cited in
Shawn Achor ' s book, The Happi ness
Advantage, three groups of patients treated
thei r depressi on wi t h ei ther medi cati on,
exercise, or a combination of the two. The
results of thi s study real ly surprised me.
Although all three groups experienced similar
improvements in their happiness levels to
begin with, the follow up assessments proved
to be radically different:
The groups were then tested six months later
to assess their relapse rate. Of those who had
taken the medication alone, 38 percent had
slipped back into depression. Those in the
combination group were doing only slightly
better, with a 31 percent relapse rate. The
biggest shock, though, came from the exercise
group: Their relapse rate was only 9 percent!
You don't have to be depressed to gain benefit
from exercise, though. It can help you to relax,
increase your brain power and even improve
your body image, even if you don't lose any
weight.
We've explored exercise in depth before, and
looked at what it does to our brains, such as
releasing proteins and endorphins that make
us feel happier, as you can see in the image
below.
Make yourself happier - exercise
2. Sleep more - you' ll be less sensitive to
negative emotions
We know that sleep hel ps our bodi es to
recover from the day and repair themselves,
and that i t hel ps us focus and be more
productive. It turns out, it's also important for
our happiness.
In NutureShock, Po Bronson and Ashley
Merryman expl ai n how sl eep affects our
positivity:
Negat i ve st i mul i get processed by t he
amygdala; positive or neutral memories gets
pr ocessed by t he hi ppocampus. Sl eep
deprivation hits the hippocampus harder than
the amygdala. The result is that sleep-deprived
people fail to recall pleasant memories, yet
recall gloomy memories just fine.
In one experiment by Walker, sleep-deprived
college students tried to memorize a list of
words. They could remember 81% of the
words wi t h a negat i ve connot at i on, l i ke
"cancer." But they could remember only 31%
of t he words wi t h a posi t i ve or neut ral
connotation, like "sunshine" or "basket."
The BPS Research Digest explores another
study that proves sleep affects our sensitivity
t o negat i ve emot i ons. Usi ng a f aci al
recognition task over the course of a day, the
researchers studied how sensitive participants
were to positive and negative emotions. Those
who worked through the afternoon without
taking a nap became more sensitive late in the
day to negative emotions like fear and anger.
Usi ng a f ace recogni t i on t ask, here we
demonstrate an amplified reactivity to anger
and fear emotions across the day, without
sleep. However, an intervening nap blocked
and even reversed this negative emotional
reactivity to anger and fear while conversely
enhanci ng r at i ngs of posi t i ve ( happy)
expressions.
Of course, how well (and how long) you sleep
will probably affect how you feel when you
wake up, which can make a difference to your
whole day. Especially this graph showing how
your brain activity decreases is a great insight
about how i mportant enough sleep is for
productivity and happiness:
Make yourself happier
Another study tested how employees' moods
when they started work in the morning affected
their work day.
Researchers found that employees' moods
when they clocked in tended to affect how they
felt the rest of the day. Early mood was linked
to their perceptions of customers and to how
they reacted to customers' moods.
And most importantly to managers, employee
mood had a clear impact on performance,
including both how much work employees did
and how well they did it.

Can Human Life be Devalued Like Currency?
By: Ramzy Baroud
How many Egyptians have been killed since
the January 2011 revolt? My pursuit for exact
fi gures has proven t o be futi l e. Vari ous
sources suggest all sorts of numbers, some
scrambled in such a way as to make a political
point. It is as if the life of the ordinary Egyptian
doesn' t matter on its own, as an absolute
value that must be guarded aside from any
political considerations. If it does matter at all,
it is only within a larger context to simply prove
a point.
But the deaths are certainly in the thousands
On Aug. 14 - one of the bloodiest days in
modern Egyptian history - hundreds of people
were killed in Cairo and the rest of the country.
What was the point of killing 38 allegedly
pro-Brotherhood political prisoners on their
way to Abu Zaabal prison in northern Egypt on
Aug. 18? And what di d t he ki l l i ng of 25
Egyptian soldiers in northern Sinai the next
morning achieve? Is the life of poor Egyptians
cheap to the extent that they are being used
as political fodder in exchange of few media
sound bites?
According to the Palestinian Center for Human
Rights, 1417 Palestinians were killed during
the Israeli 2008-09 war on Gaza, out of which
926 were civilians, including 313 children. The
Israeli rights group B'Tselem put the number at
1385, except it is higher in its estimation of
minors and children killed, which it put at 318.
Despite the outrage at the Israeli action and
the spiteful way in which Israeli politicians
j ust i f i ed t hei r war , si nce t hen many
Pal est i ni ans have been ki l l ed i n equal
impunity, but the numbers are not as high. And
with every new casualty, there seems to be a
t ad l ess out r age, and f ewer cal l s f or
international action.
When 22-year-old Mohammad Anis Lahlouh
was killed by Israeli occupation forces in Jenin
on Aug. 20, the story didn't make much of a
buzz even in local Palestinian media. It was
barely reported. How many Mohammeds were
kil led on that very day in Syri a, Iraq and
throughout the Middle East?
Can human life be devalued like currency?
For months, if not years after the US invasions
of Afghanistan and Iraq, there has been little
mention of how many civilians have been
killed by US forces and their allies. In fact, we
will never know, as it is all an estimation, some
of which is based on newspaper clippings and
such. It is outrageous, but the kind of outrage
that becomes less shocking with time.
In Afghanistan, it is still impossible to even
narrow down the numbers with any plausible
accuracy simply because there have been too
many casualties, and little time and resources
has been invested in knowing how many. And
of course, there is much politics in that, for US
media sources would do whatever it takes to
esti mate vi ctims of terrori sm, but l ittl e to
estimate victims of its government's own wars.
The Los Angeles Times estimated that up to
1,201 civilians were killed between October
2001 and February 2002 (reported on June 02,
2002). The British Guardian estimated that up
to 20,000 Afghans died as an indirect result of
the initial US airstrike and ground invasion
(reported May 20, 2002).
As for Iraq, [Link], founded in May
2003, didn't bother to tend to Iraqi civilian
casualties until nearly two years later. It was
then called Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, and
until now its main focus has certainly not been
the hundreds of thousands of deaths at the
hands of these military coalitions. According to
Iraq Body Count website, as of the writing of
thi s arti cl e, bet ween 114, 164 - 125,081
civilians were killed, and "further analysis of
the WikiLeaks' Iraq War Logs may add 11,000
civilian deaths."
But of course, the numbers are much higher
and they continue to rise, as the US has
created a political atmosphere that set the
stage for a protracted conflict. On Aug. 1, the
UN mission in Baghdad released new casualty
figures: At least 4,137 civilians have been
killed and 9,865 injured so far this year, and
1,057 Iraqis were killed in July alone, reported
the BBC. Since then, hundreds more were
killed.
The civil war in Syria has done more than
enough to devalue human lives as well. The
UN and other groups calculate the toll as a
result of the brutal fighting at around 100,000.
The site of dead bodies piled on top of one
another has become a news media staple.
Now allegations by both sides regarding the
use of chemical weapons are adding another
twist to the gory Syrian reality. Still, there is
little consensus that regardless of the religion,
sect, or political views of the victims, the
slaughtering of a family in some peaceful
village is a reprehensible act that must be
condemned with unreserved outrage.
True, human life has hardly been treated with
much sanctity in the Middle East, as dictators
ruled with iron fists, and Israeli, US wars
carried on with almost predictable succession.
But recent wars and revolts have devalued
human life even further, for now some are
cheeri ng at t he mi sery of ot hers where
slaughter is shared on YouTube and social
media, with casual comments, similes, and
oftentimes utter indifference.

Sudans: Is the ice melting?
Unlike his first visit to Khartoum more than two
years ago, Salva Kii r, president of South
Sudan, comes to Sudan in a few days as a
confident man. Over the past few weeks he
managed to consolidate his grip over three
main power centers: The Sudan People' s
Liberation Movement (SPLM), the government
and the army.
A month ago, Kiir dismissed all his ministers,
i ncl udi ng hi s deput y Ri ek Machar and
suspended Pagan Amum, hi s top Sudan
negot i at or , bef or e put t i ng hi m under
investigation for alleged disloyalty. Machar was
made to pay because he spoke publicly about
his readiness to challenge Kiir in the upcoming
elections in two years' time.
A week later, Kiir appointed a new team -
smaller, more cohesive - with members more
willing to toe his line. As for the army he sent
tens of generals packing.
Before t hese l at est moves, t he general
impression in the country was that Kiir enjoyed
limited authority and needed to take other
power centers on board before making any
decision. That led to some kind of a policy
paral ysi s on one hand and a conti nui ng
confrontati on wi th Sudan gi ven di fferent
approaches on how to handle the thorny
relationship.
Khartoum saw the changes taking place in
Juba as positive development. Certain figures
who are known to adopt a tough stand against
Khartoum are no l onger there occupying
official positions. For instance, Amum used to
be in charge of negotiations with Sudan, while
Deng Alor, the former minister of Cabinet
affairs, who is a strong voice representing the
contested region of Abyei between the two
countries, is being investigated for corruption
charges. Taban Deng, is no longer governor of
Unity State, nei ghboring Sudan and was
bel i eved t o be i nst rument al i n hel pi ng
Sudanese rebel s wage guerri l l a warf are
against Sudanese Army.
In retaliation of Juba's support to the rebels,
Khartoum extended its decision to close the
pipeline carrying South Sudan oil to world
markets up to Sept. 6. However, recent joint
security committees meetings have made
tangible progress in terms of putting down
some meas ur es f or est abl i s hi ng a
demilitarized zone and having a system to
check whether rebel movements are getting
help from the other side.
Now the atmosphere has become encouraging
to the ext ent t hat a group of promi nent
Sudanese businessmen paid a visit to Juba
last week, where they met Kiir and promised to
push toward promoting bil ateral relations
based on mutual interests.
I t i s st i l l a l ong way t o go and t hese
developments will be put to test and again.
Even before the thaw sets in, Sudan has
already started accusing Southern Sudan
Army soldiers of sneaking into border areas to
influence a referendum in the contested Abyei
region in October. The idea of the referendum
stemmed out of a proposal from the African
Union, which was never accepted by Sudan. In
fact the last thing the two countries agreed
upon Abyei is to leave it to the two presidents
to decide on, which did not happen so far.
Abyei is the real test for the upcoming Kiir's
vi si t to Khart oum despi t e hi s moves t o
strengthen hi s power l eading to a better
understanding between the two countries.

Deputy Albany County Executive Arrested
ALBANY - Albany County' s Deputy County
Executive Christine Quinn was arrested and
arraigned Tuesday, charged with felony drug
possession.
According to the compl aint fil ed in court,
i nvest i gat or s al l ege Chr i st i ne Qui nn
fraudulently obtained a prescription, for her
own use, for nearly 300 Ritalin tablets. Ritalin
is commonly prescribed for attention disorders
but is used, illegally, as a stimulant.
The alleged incident is said to have occurred
at a medical office at 401 New Karner Road
back in March. According to court documents,
Christine Quinn told a nurse practitioner that a
previous prescription for Ritalin wasn't fully
filled and the legal paperwork indicates that
wasn't the truth.
Albany County District Attorney David Soares
says Quinn was arrested at her home in
Colonie Tuesday morning after a multi-agency
investigation, including the DEA.
"We engage in a dispassionate review of the
facts and gathering of evidence and there is
Christine Quinn
one standard of law that is applicable to every
person," added Soares.
Quinn has been suspended with pay from her
$106,000 per year position and an interim
Deputy County Executive has been assigned.
The case has been waived to a grand jury.
Six arrested in Albany fight
ALBANY - A fight involving hundreds breaks
out at an event.
The fight happened late Saturday evening at
the Polish Community Center on Washington
Avenue Extension.
Police say people got angry when others tried
to cut in line. That led to several fights
breaking out inside and outside the building.
Police eventually broke things up, and shut
down the event. Six people were arrested.

summoned by US court
New York - On a complaint by a Sikh group, a
US federal court has issued summons against
Congress party president Sonia Gandhi for
shielding party officials allegedly involved in
inciting attacks on Sikhs in November 1984,
an attorney said.
In a class action suit filed Tuesday before the
