Traffic Studies Practice Handbook

This document is a handbook that provides guidance on conducting common traffic studies, including procedures, examples, and references. It was prepared for the Iowa Department of Transportation by the Center for Transportation Research and Education at Iowa State University. The handbook covers six types of traffic studies: spot speed studies, traffic volume counts, sight distance evaluations, crash analyses, and school zone programs. For each study type, it describes appropriate methodologies and provides templates for recording field observations and presenting results. The handbook aims to support both agency staff and consultants in performing simplified yet rigorous traffic studies.
