Commonly Asked Questions
Possible questions/topics: Clothing Something comfortable, i.e. jeans and a top or something that would be appropriate for a day at school. Light refreshments will be available before the bee. The Division Bees will last until around 11:00 AM. The Championship Bee will likely last longer. During the Championship Bee the bee coordinator will determine whether or not to break for a lunch break based on the number of spellers remaining and the needs of those spellers. 8:30 AM is advised Spellers will face words not in the Spell It study guide. Your school coordinator should have provided you with copy of the Spell It study guide. The guide may also be downloaded at www.myspellit.com. The Division Bees consist of three rounds of words. A round consists of each remaining speller receiving a word to spell. If a speller misspells his/her word they are eliminated from the competition. If a speller spells his/her word correctly they advance to the next round. All spellers remaining after three rounds advance on to the Championship Bee on Saturday, February 23rd. If a speller misspells a word, he/she is eliminated from the completion and their spelling bee season is over for this year. After a word has been given it is no longer use. For example, if Ken misspells his word, Amy is not asked to correctly spell it. The spellers parent/guardian or teacher may appeal to the judges for the spellers reinstatement provide that the appeal is in compliance with the appeal protocol. Appeals must be received in writing by the bee coordinator before the speller would have received their next word had they not been eliminated. Make note, the judges decision is the final word. If all spellers in a round misspell: If none of the spellers remaining in the spelling bee at the start of a round spells a word 1

2 correctly during that round, all remain in the competition and a new round begins. Ties: All spellers eliminated in the same round are tied for the same place. After the champion has been determined, spelling bee officials may opt to conduct tiebreakers (of their own design) if tiebreakers are necessary for the awarding of prizes. If only one speller in a round spells correctly: If only one speller spells correctly in a round, a new one-word round begins and the speller is given an opportunity to spell the next word on the list (anticipated championship word). If the speller succeeds in correctly spelling the anticipated championship word in this one-word round, the speller is declared the champion. Scenario A Round 75: 2 spellers remaining (Ken and Amy) -Ken misspells basket. Ken is eliminated from play. -Amy correctly spells stapler. Amy advances to the next round. Round 76: 1 speller remaining (Amy) -Amy correctly spells telephone. Amy is pronounced Champion of the Jackson County Spelling Bee. Scenario B Round 75: 2 spellers remaining (Ken and Amy) -Ken misspells basket. -Amy misspells stapler. *Sense all of the spellers in this round misspelled their word, all spellers remain in the competition and a new round begins. Round 76: 2 spellers remaining (Ken and Amy) -Ken correctly spells telephone. Ken advances to the next round. -Amy misspells paperclip. Amy is eliminated from play. Round 77: 1 speller remaining (Ken) -Ken correctly spells calendar. Ken is pronounced Champion of the Jackson County Spelling Bee. Scenario C Round 75: 2 spellers remaining (Ken and Amy) -Ken misspells basket. Ken is eliminated from play. -Amy correctly spells stapler. Amy advances to the next round. Round 76: 1 speller remaining (Amy) -Amy misspells telephone. A new round starts with the all spellers from the previous round spelling in the original order.
Round 77: 2 spellers remaining (Ken and Amy)
3 -Ken correctly spells paperclip. Ken advances to the next round. -Amy misspells scissors. Amy is eliminated from play. Round 78: 1 speller remaining (Ken) -Ken correctly spells calculator. Ken is pronounced Champion of the Jackson County Spelling Bee.
